Subaru Crosstrek Kazan PZEV

 After several weeks of medium and large sized SUVs it was nice to step into a smaller rendition of a go anywhere family hauler and get greater intervals between stops at the gas pump.  

The smallest of Subaru’s SUV offerings, the 5-door Crosstrek is based on their compact sedan, the Impreza, and brings driving excitement and comfort to a very competitive market segment. A segment that includes the Nissan Juke, Honda HR-V, Jeep Renegade, Mazda CX3 and Chevrolet Trax. For 2017 differences in the Crosstrek are mostly under the skin.

Gone from showroom floors is the hybrid version. New to the trim line is the Kazan (Japanese for volcano), a mild factory custom iteration that comes in any choice of colour as long as that colour is red or as Subaru calls it, Pure Red. There’s only one engine option, a 2.0L dual overhead cam (DOHC) four-cylinder boxer that doles out 148 horses and 145 lb.ft. of torque that meets Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) standards. The numbers may not be high, but when you factor in the car’s size and weight, the 148 horses send this wagon down the highway in a brisk pace. Detractors will tell you the Crosstrek is slow on the take off but I doubt that buyers are looking to get to 100 kph in 6 seconds.

With the same ground clearance as its larger siblings, the Forester and Outback, the Crosstrek has no problems in the deep stuff.

Two transmissions are available, a five-speed manual (yes Lucritia there still are 5-speeds on the market) as in the case of my tester, and a Lineartronic CVT with manual mode. Note that Subaru’s collision avoidance system, Eye Sight, is not available with the manual transmission. Depending on your transmission choice, there are two different all-wheel-drive systems available. The stick shift makes use of a viscous-coupling limited slip differential that distributes the power equally front to rear. CVT equipped Crosstreks however have an electronically controlled multi-plate transfer clutch all-wheel-drive system. The latter distributes power based on acceleration, deceleration and available traction. On a personal note I’d opt for the manual tranny which does away with the CVT’s drone at highway speeds or heavy acceleration and makes best use of the engine’s torque.

Inside the Kazan owner is rewarded with tasteful red stitching on black cloth seating. The red highlight continues through to the various trim pieces including the leather shifter and steering wheel. A 6.2 inch touchscreen is the centerpoint for the multimedia interface.

This Subie also gets the thumbs up for passenger accommodations. Spacious, comfortable and airy are not words commonly used to describe small port utilities, but the Crosstrek earns top points.  Even adults riding in the rear seat will be surprised by the amount of leg and headroom.  Cargo capacity is greater than most of the other cute utes in this category. 

The 2017 Crosstrek got a 5 out of 5 Star overall safety score from the National Highway  (NHTSA) and the IIHS gave it a Top Safety Pick+ rating after receiving a Good score in all crash tests. The wagon also received a Superior rating on the crash prevention and mitigation test. There’s a slew of airbags to keep you from serious injury including some, like the driver knee unit that isn’t available on many larger, pricier vehicles.

The Kazan is equipped with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure and sway warning. Standard too is VDC, (Vehicle Dynamics Control) which monitors and corrects the wagon’s lateral-g and yaw.

Getting behind the wheel the Crosstrek feels like a comfortable pair of broken in running shoes. If you’re looking for a fun to drive vehicle that will get you into places…or out of, that your family sedan won’t go, than look no further.
