THE LATEST ADDITION TO MY COLLECTION...

...the M40 gas mask! I bid sniped this one off of shopgoodwill, hell of a find for a hell of a price.

For those who don't know, this mask was the US gas mask from the 80s until it was replaced by the M50 in the early 00s.

One unique feature, which you can see in the first image below, is its 'second skin.' Long story short, the base material of the facepiece (green) is made of silicone rubber - which is good at a lot of things, but not so good at resisting blister agents. So to keep the mask from being damaged by certain chemicals the wearer may encounter, a butyl rubber second skin (black) is fixed over the mask.

I intend to remove the second skin at some point, as well as take off the lens outserts and reconfigure which side the filter connects to. I'll probably change it all back to normal afterwards, I just want the experience.

Hihi, I remember a long time ago you said that Blake's gym was on top of Ametrine mountain and Cal's was probably on top of Pyrous Mountain and that he maybe lived in the city or had a room in Apophyll.

I'm assuming that changed in E19 since he never even heard of Apophyll Academy. (I guess he could never really have seen the place and only gone to Pyrous mountain).

So do you have any ideas where his gym could've been or are you just saying 'go nuts and think of a place you think fits?'

Pokémon Reborn Screenshot Let's Play: Chapter 39

As I said in the last chapter- I am VERY glad for this split between Chapters 38 and 39, as unplanned as it was. That's because it’s taken me a bit more time to adjust to this new schedule of weekday working than I expected, hence the slight delay with this update. Still, coulda been worse, at least the play session and notes were already done.

And hey, the timing works out even better, because yesterday was the one-year anniversary of me starting this Let’s Play! I was hoping I could do something special for the occasion, like maybe draw something or…something else, but I just didn’t have the time to do anything like that, especially this past week. But, maybe challenging the sixth Gym will be enough to celebrate such a milestone? Given there are 18 Gyms in total, I guess you could say I’m going to be about a third of the way through the game, technically. At this rate, I should be able to fully beat this game in another two years!

It’s pretty surreal that this has gone on for a whole year now- I wasn’t sure if I’d get this far, honestly. I mean, I hoped I would, but I can count on one hand the amount of personal media-related projects I’ve been able to finish over the years, so I had no idea how something like this would go. But we’re still chugging along, and I hope you readers have been enjoying the ride as much as I have!

But now, let’s focus more on the here and the now. Before getting into the other half of the last play session, it’s best to recap what went on in the previous half. It wasn’t like there was any story stuff, no worries there, but given those events lead directly to this chapter, it’d probably be good housekeeping to summarize.

Xera travels to Byxbysion Wasteland during a storm to track down a wayward Squirtle she had been told about by a Wasteland resident. She finds and catches the Pokémon, naming it Blast.

Xera returns to Pyrous Mountain and encounters a particularly timid Tepig, who she eventually finds on the volcano’s summit. She battles and successfully catches it, naming it Vulcan.

At Tanzan Cove, Xera fishes up and catches a Luvdisc who she names Amore. She trades this Luvdisc to a student of Apophyll Academy for Wish the Darumaka.

Xera evolves her Shiny Chingling, Ring, into a Chimecho and takes her to Azurine Island. There, Ring soothes a disturbed man who has taken up residence in the Observation Facility and trapped a Chikorita in the basement. He allows Xera to take the Chikorita, who she names Magnolia.

Xera travels through Chrysolia Forest and finds an abandoned train. In addition to the logs written by the train’s unfortunate captain, she finds a Pokémon Egg, which later hatches into a Cacnea she names Thorn.

Xera evolves a Burmy she caught earlier, named Hawk, into a Mothim and trades him to a man whose house was teleported into Chrysolia Forest. She receives a Bruxish named Mimix in exchange.

At the Spinel Town Museum, Xera encounters a pair of Team Meteor Grunts skulking around one of the exhibits. They challenge her to come find them at Tanzan Mountain- a challenge that she accepts. Xera is successful in defeating them and driving them away, and a museum worker gifts her a Cover Fossil as thanks.

Following the clues left behind by the missing train conductor, Xera makes her way back through Chrysolia Forest to the Lost Railcave. In a chamber deep in the cave, Xera finds the possible last words of the captain, who disappeared into “a world of glittering, static blue and stars” he found out of desperation. 

Among the items he left behind is a Poké Ball containing a Pokémon he intended to give to his daughter as a gift, but he now asks whoever finds his journal to watch over the Pokémon. The Ball is found to contain an Eevee, who Xera names Elio.

At the Sweet Kiss Candy Shop in Obsidia Ward, Xera is able to access an ice cream machine and, when attempting to buy Vanilla Ice Cream, finds a Vanillite drops down instead. She catches the Vanillite and names it Frost.

And then I went to sleep, because it was approaching midnight by the time I caught Frost! So now, there are plenty of teambuilding options for this upcoming Gym, a lot of ways this could go…but I’ll get more into that in the chapter proper. Let’s do this!

Here he is. Cal and Magmortar atop Pyrous Mountain.

I'm really glad that they gave Cal an earlier introduction. His character arc is more impactful when we get to see how he started. I liked the redesign he has where his hair is dyed blue so I drew that version. Some bad stuff happened on top of Pyrous Mountain but he's not letting any of his mistakes or regrets define him, instead he's back in this place unashamed and ready to train. Apophyll Academy still stands and thrives with its current leadership. I really like the song choices for this whole area. I especially like "Battle - Inner Peace".

Freja & Frey

Next up, they're poisonous. They're loud, say hello to Vidar's sibling Toxtricities

Acquired:

 Frey and Freja Both were found by Vidar when they were Toxels in what would be the equivalent of the electricity problems event where you get Grubbin or Joltik in-game.

 Vidar encounters them during a time he is doing favors in exchange of cash (Think a more informal Help Center from Rejuv) Where he saves Frey and calms Freja enough for him to be able to do so, and keeps both afterwards.

Special Info/Ideas:

 The idea behind them is that as we all know reborn has quite a lot of seedy elements pre-restoration. As such Frey and Freja were originally part of an underground breeding ring that was trying to get Aevian variants of Pokemon. Much like real life this means that some of the Pokemon that result from this would have health problems. Hence why Frey, regardless of being shiny, was born blind. The idea of the two of them is that they were hatch mates and stuck together after the ring was disbanded, or at least scattered.

Evolution:

 My idea is that Freja evolves into Aevian Toxtricity during the Pyrous debacle where she is exposed to a fire stone. Meanwhile Frey starts fearing falling behind and relying on his sister to protect him. This leads to, during the encounter with Victoria in the Beryl Cemetery, Frey demanding to go with her via clinging to her when Vidar tries to leave. Because I was thinking he maybe interacted with her Pokemon and realized how, in my headcanon, Victoria has a method of training that could help him. Next time Vidar sees Frey again is during the Devon raid, where he has evolved and learned to fight thanks to echolocation or something like that. And both Frey and Freja get to fight as a sibling duo together... until they have to fight against each other during the part when Lin forces the fights. Where, Vidar wins.

However, Frey is able to knockout Freja.

Trivia:

-Originally they were only one Pokemon and it was a Vikavolt named Thor before I finalized the concept of Vidar's Pokemon, explicitly or not, having an association with music or sound of some sort. However I knew I wanted to give him an electrict type of some sort.

-Technically speaking Frey isn't part of Vidar's actual rotation of Pokemon until after Devon. So while by the time he faces Julia he has 7 Pokemon in total. technically he only has an active party of 6.

-I headcanon that Frey is more of a physical attacker, owing to his training under Victoria. While Freja is more of a Sp. Attacker.

-They both liked to sleep on top of Vidar's chest when they were Toxels, as they were small enough to do so. Both tried after evolving. To mixed results lol.

Lysia found a weird looking cat in Pyrous after Ciel's gym battle. Some reports of an unusual pokemon in the Volcano but Lysia didn't find anything strange.

checked relationship points since its been a while:

victoria has the most with 11, which fits very well since those two are practically sisters

cain and fern are tied at 10. still think its funny fern just really likes rhea compared to everyone else kdsjlfk

hardy comes in with 9, which also checks out since he and rhea are besties

8 with terra... not sure why or how

charlotte, shelly, laura, and luna are tied for 5th place with 6 points.

other things i found interesting include: -4 with amaria. this isn't exactly surprising since i answered no to amy asking if she trusted her (even if rhea's actual answer in canon is more open-ended with them saying 'you can change that' instead of directly saying no). rhea generally believes that pretty much anyone can be redeemed, and they do eventually forgive certain people for certain things- they won't forgive fern for trying to kill her but if explained, would understand why he fell into team meteor's hands if that makes sense, but things are kinda complicated with amaria? like she eventually will heal from the attempted murder and get back to being okay around amy but it'll be a long while.

fern in general is not only funny but it does make me think. did he just respect them as a rival or consider them a friend?? on rhea's side i havent fully figured it out but i think she wouldve leaned towards tolerable at best

i think they would be pretty chill tbh. they just hang out. thats it. when rhea picks up writing, it eventually opens up "what are you writing? / can i see?"

would also apply to titania. maybe they go to her for proofreading and suggestions?

I mean in zekrom it’s explained to you and she gets proof of his separation from meteor but in reshiram, to her, he disappears after pyrous and then reappears later. I’m not sure if she has dialogue about it, but she doesn’t afaik. I wonder how she feels about that

Chapter 40- Part 13

Sirius-!? HEY WAIT-

Wha- you- how!? Where did you even come from!? The stairs are all the way over there, with a wall in between! Did you throw Seviper across the room!?

That's the Elite Four for ya- especially in this region, I'd imagine, given how tough the Gym Leaders alone are. Ooooh, the endgame is gonna be brutal…

We keep breaking into your guys' bases, it's ALWAYS on your territory! …Except Pyrous Mountain, I guess.

Well, it was nice knowing Saphira for a collective five minutes. She came charging in on a Dragonite, murdered several people, Hyper Beamed another guy, and then was immediately kidnapped afterwards. That's a 10/10 character introduction if I've ever seen one, I've got no notes!

Now, let's check in on the kids, starting with our kitchen duo over here.

Well, we're about to see as soon as we check upstairs. Also, the peaceful Eterna Forest remix from before is back, but it no longer sounds appropriate…

Over analyzing my favorite Reborn character's theme team.

Cal Whitaker is my favorite character and I am going to ABSOLUTELY overthink all of this but I want to share my thoughts about his team Burning Pride . I KNOW I'm thinking TOO deep about it, but I don't care because I love him.

(I talked about this on discord so I'm copying and pasting most of it to here) Also didn't check for any spelling/grammar errors.

Spoilers to his character ending:

Okay let's start with the obvious one.

You fight the gay man on a Rainbow Field with his team called Burning Pride.

NOW onto the deeper stuff.

The first time we ever battle Cal is on the Rainbow field (unless you randomize everything)

When we meet him he's hot heated and the worst version of himself. In this fight we fight when he's become the better version of himself, even if he still has ways to go it's clear that he is on his way to finally heal. Not just the relation with himself but also his friends and brother.

Now for the Team:

Magmotar:

He has his Magmotar, what we can assume is the pokemon he had with him for the longest time. Out of all his story related battles Magmotar was always the one that was with him (Also his Charmeleon/Charizard, but Magmotar was the only fully evolved and is his ace). Despite having changed, his ace is still by his side. It was by his side through Cal's entire development.

Medicham:

He has mega Medicham, the pokemon of his teacher who has helped him get to where he is now.

Volcarona:

He has has Volcarona, I'd like to think it represents his friendship with Shelly, his best friend. Despite him having changed so much as a person he still holds her close to his heart.

Entei:

Alright let's start with Entei. Entei is one of the legendary beasts, which are also referred to as the legendary dogs, now out of those three Entei is the most dog like. In his first story related battle he had a Houndoom which is seem as like a very evil pokemon, in his second related story battle and the following after that he has Arcanine which is seen as a loyal companion. I already mentioned how that is a reference from how his personality changed from hot headed to the person we know now.

Entei is also known as the volcano pokemon. Which is a reference to his first trainer class 'Volcanic Cal'.

He went from a dog pokemon that is described as evil to a dog pokemon that is seen as a loyal companion to a legendary (dog) pokemon who embodies the passion of magma/is said when it roars that a volcano erupts.

What does this mean?

I think it's supposed to represent that his fire has been rekindled hotter than ever, but instead of anger and revenge his flame is that embodies passion, friendship and loyalty. Rather than the volcano erupting when he's angry though, it's passion, friendship, ect.

Delphox:

Now Delphox, this one is a bit trickier but I think I can stretch far enough for this.

On the Ashen beach field psychic types moves are boosted. Apophyll Academy is set on the Ashen Beach field. The Academy helped him come to terms with his emotions and helped him calm and focus on his mind.

Delphox is fire type which represents his fire type specialty and it's psychic type which represents him coming to peace with his mind.

Now there aren't many fire/psychic types, Victini is also one, but I think Delphox fits this team because before e17 he had an entire team of starters on his team up battle on Pyrous mountain and I think it's supposed to be a callback to that.

Victini:

This one is also a bit of a stretch, but hear me out.

Victini is the Victory Pokemon, it is said that its trainer always wins. But rather than winning battles against other trainers I think Victini is supposed to represent the inner battle that Cal had with himself.

As long as he keeps learning he'll become the better version of himself, in that way he has 'won' against his troubled past self.

One of Victini's pokedex entries says When it shares the infinite energy it creates, that being's entire body will be overflowing with power. I'd like to think this is a nod to his character ending where Victoria asks him to be the leader for the outing we see in the ending. Just like how Kiki shared her wisdom with Cal, Cal will share that wisdom with everyone there. And that will be passed on as well, creating an infinite 'energy'.

I'm AWFUL at putting my thoughts into words so I hope this all made sense

I just love Cal so much it's unreal.
