Thinking about Transistor and how, even though I was Obsessed with Hades, it always paled in comparison for me.
Wanna point out the objectively Hades is a much more developed title, but something about the mood struck within transistor just hit me so much deeper. With Hades I at some point start to feel how much of it is a 'game', meanwhile in Transistor I can literally replay in thrice in a week and it'll still have me in a vice. (Speaking literally, here I just cried and then immediately felt uncomfortable at the alternative voice line that you get for Recursing again. I feel such visceral emotions every time)
I kinda knew that it would end up like this from the beginning too. When I heared that Hades (the first one) was coming out from the same people that have made my favourite game ever (discounting paper mario 2 because that only trumps transistor bcs of nostalgia) I was disinterested because I knew it wouldn't be the same, because what makes Transistor so uniquely horrifying to me (in a good way) is what many would call flawed in game design. The way that it tells it's stories (plural) withing the containment of only 10 enemy types, two human models (+Sybil???), 3 ½ voiced characters... The level design and art style.
Such a short and linear story too.
It was clear that every rough edge that I liked to glide my hands over would be sanded down with future games.
I am glad that I did eventually check out Hades, it's impressive in its own rights and I thoroughly enjoyed that one. 90 hours I think., which is about four times the time that i spent on transistor. and I've already spent 30 hours in Hades 2. Some hardcore gamers might scoff but I don't spend more than 100 hours ona game, if I reach that marker I tend top drop the game. Even if I am far from actually done.
I was never very consciously aware of developers until playing Hades so I wasn't particularly familiar with Supergiant, and I do still keep my distance from interviews for personal reasons, but I've been thinking about playing bastion and pyre too now. A little anxious though.

Every few months I think to myself "people really slept on pyre". I remember in the Hades announcement at the 2018 game awards it said "from the makers of bastion and transistor" even tho pyre came out like a year and a half before the announcement. Shit is literally about criminal justice reform and no one talks about it. Plus it has like thousands of possible endings and no fail state (an idea Hades picked up and RAN WITH).

rolled credits on Hades. Now that I Get the boons system more thorougly my clears go pretty smoothly unless I'm doing something silly. I had a really funny setup for the final clear where I had mostly optimized around getting the Poseidon call to charge up alarmingly quickly.
I don't like it as much as the other Supergiant games. It doesn't have the unique charm of Bastion or the tragic through-line of Transistor or the overambitious weirdness of Pyre, but it's fine! The gameplay is definitely deeper than the rest of those, it's tighter and has much more intricate details, which is the main point to commend it on.
It hews closest to Pyre, just from being the one with the most narrative and dialogue and characters, but Pyre is far more willing to get strange with it. Pyre contains an entire book of a separate, second story that happens before the events of the current story. Pyre has you help an autistic orphan romance a boy who was raised by a dog priest.
Music's good, although there's not any lyrical songs in the main body of the game which is a noticeable change from the older games. I feel like I could tell the songs apart but I can't tell you which songs play where in anything more than broad details, which comes with the roguelikeness. Spike in a Rail on the other hand makes me think about the fucking thorn bushes.
Hades will probably end up as a sometimes food like Forza or Inscryption when I feel like its particular gameplay is what I need, but I'm probably not going to chase down every story line. Mostly I just want to try and romance Dusa. I think you can do that? Unclear. If I happen to figure out what the hell you do to reunite the various couples, so be it.
Hades II. Maybe someday.

Legitimately extremely unfortunate that Pyre's was a weird high concept fantasy sports game that was never going to get big, because it's writing is some of the best in any video game I can think of in terms of taking advantage of the medium.

Cannot emphasize how sick Pyre versus mode is, I finally played it with my friend and it was amazing. Just wish it had any online capabilities so I could play more

OH OH ALSO OUT OF CURIOSITY have you ever played/heard of Pyre? 👀 its lesser known but also made by supergiant games and its REALLY GOOD
I haven’t played Pyre, but i have heard of it ever since i’ve been obsessed. Hades is my first experience actually playing a supergiant game though and my experience with this studio has been… better than great lmao
Considering this studio is known for making great games and hades being the perfect example of that, i might actually check it out!!!

Replaying Pyre. I consider it one of my favourite games and I'm still surprised by how much I enjoy it.
There's a bit in the beginning where you meet the Moon Touched Girl and the dialogue goes something like
Jodi, a giant demon: Hedwyn, say the word and I'll do it
Rukey: What? You can't be serious
Hedwyn: Do it.
Jodi, who is a giant demon looming over her: Hello. Welcome aboard, we're your family now.
it's such a stunningly good little bit of characterization that's over in like ten seconds.
And then there's the introduction of Barker Ashpaws, who just barrels on-screen during a quiet moment before the rites to the most kick-ass guitar track, it's imposing the first time around and aligns well with how the Dissidents are the first triumvirate that will probably give you any trouble, but it also just establishes the tone of the Dissidents perfectly, I was grinning through the whole introduction.
youtube
oh also
READER
dare you tamper with forbidden knowledge
so soon after your sentence into exile
the voice of the archjustice is just so unbearably smug. Perfect video game.
