Pyracantha coccinea, the scarlet firethorn, or firethorn (lat. Pyracantha coccinea) – usually, evergreen shrubs with a tendency to lianoidness (the formation of elongated, decumbent shoots that need support). They are used in landscape design.
The "apples" of this shrub have a bright red hue, but there may also be yellow fruits, as in my photos. By the way, red fruits are also visible in the background if you look closely. They taste bitter, so they're not eaten raw. But in winter, piracantha becomes a good food source for birds.🐦

it's unintentionally hilarious when Thomas responds to Edith's criticism of the bitter firethorn tea by saying that nothing gentle grows at Allerdale
because while firethorn (Pyracantha coccinea) IS real and does contain cyanide in its seeds that could theoretically be distilled into a poison- though the berries are safely edible in the right preparation and taste like apples...
...it's native to southern Europe and western Asia. where the weather is MUCH warmer and often gentler than, say, the northwest of England
it was introduced there in the 18th century, but it sure as hell isn't a creation of the harsh, cold landscape like the Sharpes themselves

Center: 青葛藤[Aotsuzurafuji] Cocculus trilobus
青[Ao] : Blue, green
葛[Tsuzura] : General name for wild vine plants; wicker basket
藤[Fuji] : Wisteria; vine
The color of the vine is green. Green is also usually referred to as blue. With this vine, baskets called つづら[Tsuzura] are made. These are the origin of its name. The Tsuzura large and small appear in the traditional fable called 舌切り雀[Shita-kiri suzume](The Tongue-Cut Sparrow.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shita-kiri_Suzume https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Yoshitoshi_The_Heavy_Basket.jpg
The reading Tsuzurafuji is a kun-yomi(Japanese reading.) Reading this as kattō in on-yomi(Chinese reading,) it means a wandering mind or conflict. This means that complex or difficult to resolve situations are likened to the way vines tangle with each other.
Surrounding: 常盤山査子|常磐山査子[Tokiwasanzashi] Pyracantha coccinea
常盤|常磐[Tokiwa] : Something that will never change; evergreen
山査子[Sanzashi] : Hawthorn(Crataegus cuneata)
It is native from South Europe east to West Asia. In general, it is more often called ピラカンサ[Pirakansa](Pyracantha) than its name.
In addition to 常盤 and 常磐, Tokiwa also has the kanji 常葉, which means evergreen. 常 means always, 葉 means leaf. This plant so named because it is an evergreen tree similar to Sanzashi, which is a deciduous tree. It produces small five-petaled flowers in spring.
Both of these berries are poisonous, but wild birds eat them.
