Here’s the thing— Martyn knows how this kind of story is supposed to go.

The plucky hero goes into the heart of the enchanted wood, and through a bit of cleverness and the virtue of their pure heart, they rescue the victim from the horrible entangling grasp of whatever evil faerie creature has them. Now, he wouldn’t say he’s got a pure heart, necessarily, but he is certainly clever, and, well— he’s made several forays into the enchanted wood, as it were, and gotten away unscathed each time. 

But what do you do when the victim refuses to leave with you?

He’s tried reason. He’s tried logic. He’s tried gifts. He’s tried impassioned pleas. Ren still keeps going back to the Shadow Lady. He keeps insisting he’s not enchanted and that “his Queen” wouldn’t take away his free will, which is unfortunately exactly what someone enchanted and without free will would say, so he can’t really take Ren’s word for it. 

He’d love to work with Ren, really he would. (He’d love to get into that very solid and defensible tower with a proper moat and everything, too.)

He just doesn’t want to take on a fae as well. 

The Shadow Lady has extended her reach far, and though Martyn knows she’s got limits on her power, the sight of her doing something to Ren to make him harmless to her when he went red— something with enough magic to black out the sun in the middle of the day and nearly knock Martyn to the ground with the pressure— well, he’s pretty sure that speaks for itself. Grian had warned them about her, early on in the game, and though Grian is lost to the red names now, his warning still holds water, at least in Martyn’s mind. 

Maybe the problem is that he’s thinking about this as the wrong kind of story. Maybe this isn’t one where the clever hero spirits away the innocent victim from the faerie queen, leaving her to curse his name from afar. 

Maybe he’ll have to take up dragon-slaying.

i started with general 3l fanart and then turned it into pwhau on accident

Okay okay, if it's not diving too deep into spoiler territory (or you want to save it for later you can ignore this) but, what would Scott and Jimmy's reactions be as their ally comes rolling up with Ren?

This is a very fun ask plus it sparked some more angst writing in our pwhau chat so thats always welcome :}

Scott and Jimmy are VERY angry at Grian. Scott as the only person with the braincell somewhat figures out what Grian wants to do and at some point they have a talk about it. He's not impressed.

Things changes after Jimmy is killed. In Scotts eyes Grian not only has done NOTHING but help their enemy, he also was one of the people fighting them when Jimmy was killed.

So they have a confrontation during one of the battles, Grian doesnt know why Scott suddenly actually wants him dead, they fight, Scott throws it in his face that he's done nothing, that he got comfortable.

Grian loses his green life to Scotts sword straight through his back.

"Gri-"

"You took away who I cared about most. I thought it fitting I do the same."

"No, no.. We saved you-"

"I never asked to be saved."

"But surely you didn't want to be with him, you always said-"

"I know what I said, but I also was the one that said I owed him my first life. He didn't make me make the vow, I made it on my own."

"But- the diamond swords--"

"Netherite is stronger than diamond."

I stopped the animatic right on time and- THE HANDS!! THE LIGHTNING IS HANDS GIVING THE CROWN TO MARTYN

I'm back to cause more issues I uh mean angst, but I can imagen small details, but like Grian's room much like a mental state is a mess, as he gets over scars death more or so everyone thinks it seems to be looking cleaner, and at the point, it's the cleanest is when grian finally decides he's killing everyone else. (idk why this came to me but it has and now its your problem <3)

oughhhhhhhhh i love that, i will gladly take that problem, thats such a nice way to visualize whats going on inside grians head
