author's note: guys i actually wrote something other than headcannons?? holy shit?? i feel like a small blurb or whatever it is called (can't remember for the life of me) fit this vibe more than anything so yeah! hope you guys like it

finally, it was winter break. you had had a long season, ending it in third overall for the world championship. sure, it wasn't ideal, per say, but you were incredibly proud, and so was lando. in fact, the two of you went out on a last-minute date, sharing a nice burger before heading back to the hotel.

with the season finally over, you now had all the time you could wish for and more to spend with your boyfriend. most of the time, you and lando attempted to make dinner, had movie nights, and oftentimes played whatever games lando wanted with each other. it was a nice break from the high stress of driving cars at upwards of 375 kilometers an hour. plus, you had gone pretty much off the grid to detox from the heavy drama and rumors swirling around your career.

with lando, you could just be you without the stress of pr or the looming presence of your contract. lando was a breath of fresh air, even if he was a bit intense and chaotic at times. you loved him more than anything.

tonight was more or less normal. you were sitting on the couch, waiting for your food to arrive, and watching the tele. lando was in the home office, streaming like he usually did on friday nights. he was screaming and laughing, chatting with max while they shot insults back and forth at each other. you found it hilarious, especially since you teased them for acting like an old married couple.

behind lando was your collection of helmets and trophies. of course, people knew you lived together and somehow never put together all the puzzle pieces. you thought it was quite funny as it was blatantly obvious. you never hid your relationship from public view, nor did you ever want to. your fans and his just never seemed to connect the dots.

you hadn't minded, though. it was nice having a more private relationship, even if it wasn't exactly private. lando, and you were always openly affectionate with each other in public. especially lando, who is constantly hanging off your arm and kissing you.

you are snapped out of your thoughts when the doorbell rings, signaling your take out has arrived. you thank the delivery woman, tip her extra for being so kind, and enter the apartment once more. you set everything up before calling your boyfriend.

"lando! babe, dinner's here!" you call to him, hoping he can hear you over his high-pitched giggling. you wait a spell, seeing if he will come out of his cave as you have come to call the office. "babe!" you shout again before sighing and heading towards the office door.

you open it to find lando bright red from laughing. "lando, babe!" you say, approaching him, in view of the camera, and pull his headset off. "dinner's here." he looks up at you, annoyed before he smiles.

"why didn't you call me?" he asks, turning to see the chat blowing up eith question marks. he giggles again before looking back st your half annoyed expression.

"i called you at least three times, baby," you tell him, rolling your eyes at the cheeky look he was giving you. you gently shove his face away and laugh. "c'mon, love. gotta eat before it gets cold."

"can you pretty please bring me a plate? today's the longer stream, and i can't end it," he tells you, giving you his best puppy dog eyes. you close your eyes, throw your head back, and sigh heavily.

"fine, but only if i can eat in here with you too," you respond, leaning down to give him a short kiss before going to grab him a plate of food. lando cackles when you leave as his chat is absolutely shocked with your relationship.

"chat, don't be so surprised. i've been with them for years," he tells his chat, rolling his eyes. "and yes, i have been to their races. it literally says 'twitch streamer and y/n l/n's partner' when i'm shown on the tele. are you guys actually that dumb?!"

"well if they watch you, mate-" max starts before lando is yelling again, causing max to cackle as well. you barely step back into the room before you are met with the hynea sounds that assault your ears.

"what the hell?" you announce, handing your boyfriend his plate, your reaction unfortunately making him cackle louder. "never mind, just eat." and he does. he eats and chats and laughs with you and max. that stream later goes completely viral, and finally, after years together, the world has finally pieced it together how insanely in love you guys are.

The silence between you stretched like silk—no longer taut with tension, but soft and curious. Mihawk wasn’t looking at the sea anymore. He was looking at you.

Then, his voice came, low and unhurried.

“Why do you always brush it off? When you say something vulnerable. You smile, or laugh, like it didn’t cost you to say it.”

You stilled. That question—so precise, so observant—hit somewhere deep. You swallowed, your eyes drifting to your tea.

“Because I learned early that being soft made people uncomfortable. That it was easier if I looked like I didn’t mind the things that hurt.”

You didn’t expect the pang in your chest as you admitted it aloud. But Mihawk didn’t interrupt. He only waited, like the air itself was listening.

“I guess I’d rather be the one laughing at myself,” you added quietly, “than sit there and watch someone else not know what to do with my feelings.”

A pause. A long one.

Then his fingers moved—barely—but they brushed against yours on the table. A small touch. No dramatics. Just the edge of his hand, a silent kind of I see you.

“That’s… exhausting,” he said.

You laughed once, gently. “Yeah. It is.”

And then—out of nowhere, unexpected and unguarded—his lips twitched. Just slightly. But unmistakably.

“Wouldn’t it be easier,” he murmured, “to simply let someone else hold that weight for a while?”

You turned to look at him. “Do you offer?”

Another pause. His mouth curved, dry and faint but real.

“I don’t offer lightly,” he said. “But I meant what I said earlier. I don’t find you too much. I find you alive.”

And then—there it was again.

The rarest sound.

A quiet, low laugh, drawn from his chest as you smiled wide, surprised by your own teasing boldness. He looked at you like you were a puzzle he was almost starting to enjoy not solving.

“I like your laugh,” you said softly.

“I hardly ever use it.”

“Then I’ll just have to earn more of it.”

His brow lifted. “Is that a challenge?”

“Absolutely.”

He studied you for a beat longer, then turned back to his tea—but that smile was still there. Just barely. But enough.

Enough to keep you warm the rest of the night.

The first time — what should have been the only time, really — Sirius decides to be romantic and to do things well. He plans a nice diner and buys flowers and gets out to buy Remus’ favorite cake from his favorite bakery.

Then Remus comes home, sees the setup, and panics. Remus being Remus, he immediately assumes he forgot an important date instead of literally anything else, and so Sirius spends half of the night reassuring him that no, there’s nothing important at all going on.

The second time, Sirius just brings it up in a conversation. Or tries, at least.

But, well, that one is on him for opening with Maybe we should change our relationship status.

The third time, he takes advantage of his favorite day of the week (babysitting Harry and Neville) to do art and craft with the boys and designs a very nice sign for his boyfriend.

Remus puts it away without looking at it after assuming the kids forgot it when leaving.

By then, Sirius throws subtlety by the window and leaves countless wedding magazines everywhere in the flat.

Remus looks at it with a puzzled expression and wonders out loud if it’s leftovers from Marlene and Dorcas’ wedding.

“It’s like when I was trying to ask him out on a date all over again,” he complains to James one night.

James nods along with a sympathetic expression. “Sure hope it won’t take you two years again!” he still teases all too cheerfully.

Sirius downs his beer in one go at the thought.

In the end, he slides the ring on Remus’ finger when he’s sleeping and calls it a night. No need for a grand thing when Remus doesn’t even realize what Sirius is trying to do, right?

Five days later, Sirius catches Remus staring at his hand, dumbfounded.

“Since when do I have a ring?”

Sirius shrugs. “Since you failed to notice I was trying to propose and I decided to just go ahead with it anyway.”

Remus blinks. “Oh, okay.” He goes back to his book, seemingly happy to have his question answered.

Thirty seconds later, his tea is all over himself and his book, and Remus turns red as the information finally sinks in.

Her grandmother liked to remind her that she was born of death. Mary disagreed with her on many things, but never this: never that the taint in her veins started before she took her first breath.

Mary emerged from the womb with a devil screech and a splatter of viscera as her mother's life waned. She balled her bloody fists and loosed a wail, wriggling in cooling arms as she was met with stricken faces and gasping sobs. “Her fault,” someone whispered. Their opinion did not change much from there.

Motherless and unwanted by her grandmother, she was sent to boarding school when she was eleven and was seldom spoken to in the scant weeks she was home. She spent seven years in a red and gold dormitory taking classes she can't remember, making no friends that she can recall.

Her years post graduation are blank. Mary entered her twenties with barely any recollection of her teens, and a firm, almost alien desire not to regain that recollection. Now it seems that the pieces are starting to slot into place.

When Mary slits her eyes open to soft beams of sunlight, it's to a room completely covered in little notes—she scribbles her latest dream down and pads into the hallway. All around her multicolored slips paint the walls. I saw her again, one reads. Snake face, reads another. She seems angry… the one closest to Mary trails off. She sticks her latest note up with the rest. She's almost run out of space in the hallway.

Maybe if Mary had been someone else, these dreams would have been a curse. My next side quest I had that I wanted to complete was to find the connection point between 3 regions. On the way I found a korok under a rock that was covered in leaves and it gave me my 1st seed (375 total) Moving on I found a puzzle where I had to put a part of it into place to make the korok appear and it gave me my 82nd seed (376 total). I made it to the intersecting point and was at the Ancient Columns, but I couldn’t find where I was supposed to go, there had to be an entrance somewhere. I had to avoid the Gleeok since I wasn’t prepared to fight it yet. I ended up looking it up and found out that there was a switch on a column that I was supposed to press. I eventually found it and it opened up a hole in the ground leading to the Ancient Columns Cave. Inside was a chest with a Misoko’s treasure with the Tunic of Awakening. Side Quests – Misoko’s Treasure of Awakening I (complete). Before I left I looked for the glow frog and found a hole in the floor that led to another room where it was and I got my 78th Bubbul Gem (124 total).

This weeks (months? I don't think my hyperfocus actually changes weekly 🤔) hyperfocus is RC! Specifically RC crawlers.

What started off as an innocent look at a marketplace ad for an RC Ural 375 lead to a rabbithole of scaled vehicular dopamine. However before we get to that I need to mention my favorite video game for some context.

For those who haven't played it, Snowrunner is an off-road driving game where you do just that. It is not a racing game, rather speed is hardly present as stomping on the gas pedal will usually lead to your truck getting flipped or stuck in the bog (this is why off-roading is often known as crawling). Getting from point A to B is a lot like solving a puzzle, as you need to carefully plan your route to ensure your rig and cargo stay upright over the rough terrain. On paper this sounds extremely boring, and for a lot of people it is. But for myself this shit is my comfort food. Nothing is more relaxing than popping on a podcast and taking my time traversing rivers and muddy roads at my own pace.

Now let's return to that marketplace ad. The Ural 375 is one of the trucks featured in Snowrunner, and here I was looking at a highly detailed RC version. So I bought the thing......and promptly resold it the next day when I realized it couldn't do any offroading AT ALL. What's even the point in making an RC Ural if it can barely crawl across carpet?? So gone was the truck, yet the daydreams of traversing hazardous trails at the local park with my 1:18 scale wheels remained. It could not stand. I NEEDED a replacement to fill the void left in my heart.

After a week of vigorous research, scrolling through RC posts on Reddit during bathroom breaks, and dancing back and forth between assembling my own build or buying a prebuilt, I had made my choice: A tiny blue Land Rover no bigger than a shoe, that somehow cost more than all my shoes.

Yet for it's size they still managed to cram a lot of details into it, and unlike the marketplace special I briefly owned this thing can actually crawl! And oooohh how the dopamine flows when you drive it. Nothing beats the satisfaction of successfully crawling up the side of a rock face, through a brook, or whatever route/obstacle it is you've picked. It's a little like playing Snowrunner, but it actually gets me out of the house. And there's just something I find more enjoyable about controlling a physical thing (even if it's just a toy 😛) vs. a video game vehicle.

And that's just the experience of driving it. The amount of tinkering you can do with these things is insane. Everything from swapping out wheels and tires, lower or higher ranged transmissions, stronger motors, functioning headlights, etc. You name it, and I guarantee there's some guy on eBay selling the exact part. Heck you can even be the local small penis and add mini truck nuts to your rig (please don't).

Honestly I shouldn't be surprised at how I latched onto this, as RC builds and components are very similar to PC builds and hardware. Both feature endless nights spent researching parts for your build, fanboys fanboying, and components that will fuck you up it mistreated (don't mess with LiPos or PSUs kids). Both are hobbies that require knowing the ins and outs of your machine, the skills to build/maintain it, and involve constant tinkering.

Anyways, I realize I just spent way too much time on this block of text lolol. But I would highly recommend this hobby as your next hyperfixation. Just be mindful of your wallet 😅 I've since bought a 2nd truck, a significantly larger Ford Bronco, and am eager to take it hiking with me this summer 😊 thanks for reading! (If anyone ever does lol)
