Biblioteca umbrelor (recenzie)

the heart is just a muscle
he confessed on a spring day and i told you only how it made me afraid you said i took it the worst way
takes courage to be bold, you told me, don’t be so cold, you scolded me he has a heart of gold he would have sold to me but my heart is just a muscle
so i lied to him that i loved him and our romance was a whirlwind and to him it was probably heaven but i was guilty as sin
because since the beginning, our ending was on the wall in my handwriting because love is only a feeling and my heart is just a muscle
and i never batted an eye when he said for me he’d leave all he’d known behind and there were no tears, it was bone dry when he wrote me i never replied
but do you recall how i sobbed, how i cried when you told me i should die i guess you thought i wouldn’t mind because my heart is just a muscle
well this heart of stone, you bloodied this mosquito heart, you won it the barrel of my tears you bathed in i did always say you could do anything
pretending at love might have been my crime most heinous but what you did in the name of love is still the cruelest
so riddle me this when you train it, if it hurts does it not grow strong? when you strain it, if it rips does it not heal wrong? when you fall and you bleed, won’t the blood clot? what then do you think happens to a bleeding heart?
the answer to this puzzle: the heart is just a muscle

PUTERI GUNUNG LEDANG'S IMPOSSIBLE DEMANDS ; The Extents of Pursuing Power and Status
POST 2/5 - Not exactly a tale I'm familiar with (much to my surprise as a Johorean), but one that intrigues me regardless - and one that I think everyone deserves to know about, for that reason.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Long ago, there lived a benevolent fairy princess named Puteri Gunung Ledang, who lived at the top of Gunung Ledang, the highest mountain in the south of Peninsular Malaysia. Legend had it that the princess possessed magical powers and great beauty.
The news of her presence reached Sultan Mahmud Syah, ruler of the Malacca Sultanate. Awestruck by the stories spun, he sought on rejecting the advances of empires around Malacca that presented their daughters as potential candidates to play the role of the Sultan's wife, and instead decided that he must marry Puteri Gunung Ledang.
He sent a delegation led by the ever-loyal warrior Hang Tuah to scale the mountain and request her hand in marriage on his behalf. A difficult journey presented itself to the team, filled with obstacles and battering rains, but they succeeded regardless.
Eventually, upon meeting Puteri Gunung Ledang at the top of the mountain, Hang Tuah proceeded with the offer initiated by Sultan Mahmud Syah, to which, surprisingly, the princess offered a listening ear, and even accepted - on seven conditions of her own, which were as follows:
A golden bridge from Malacca to Gunung Ledang.
A silver bridge from Gunung Ledang to Malacca.
Seven trays of mosquitoes' hearts.
Seven trays of mites' hearts.
Seven jars of virgins' tears.
Seven jars of betel nut juice.
A bowlful of the Sultan's son's blood.
Soon enough, Hang Tuah returned to the Sultan to relay the princess's impossible demands, under the impression that he would give up on the proposal due to the absurdity of the demands in question. Unfortunately, the Sultan persevered, ordering his people to work hard to meet her demands. Through months and months of hard work and effort, six of the requests had been successfully fulfilled, and now, only one remained - that being to retrieve a bowlful of the Sultan's son's blood.
Despite having given this last condition rigorous preliminary consideration time and time again, the Sultan was still set on fulfilling his desire to marry the princess. Just as he brandished his keris to stab his son, Puteri Gunung Ledang appeared before him, seemingly out of nowhere, and ultimately stopped him, stating that she had no desire to marry such a selfish man who would go as far as to attempt to kill his own son just to marry her.
In truth, Puteri Gunung Ledang had no interest in Sultan Mahmud Syah from the very beginning - the conditions she set were put in place to deter him from ever wanting to marry her due to the absurdity of the requests.
Tumblr media
As opposed to proceeding with the condition of killing his son, versions of this folk tale exist in which the Sultan does give up immediately upon listening to said condition when it is first relayed by Hang Tuah, as he could never bring himself to do such a thing and eventually realises that the other conditions, in turn, are equally impossible.
I still ended up retelling the story according to the former version, as I feel that it helps to accentuate the fact that sometimes, not even the highest of classes are aware of their limits.
Additionally, some versions of the tale suggest that Sultan Mahmud Syah's reasoning for wanting to marry Puteri Gunung Ledang stem from wanting to have a wife who exceeds those of other princes and kings, despite having two wives: the Princess of China and the Princess of Jawa. However, the version I stuck with implies that the Sultan only had one wife, who passed away early on in the story, before he'd heard of Puteri Gunung Ledang.

Within the boundaries of Malaysian culture, it is thought that certain aspects of life, usually pertaining to mysticism and nature, cannot be swayed or persuaded by human will alone - think of the unstoppable force VS immovable object trope. Us Malaysians typically hold respect for supernatural elements and, in some cases, wholeheartedly believe in superstitions of old, recognising the power and boundaries they impose on human actions.
Another prevalent theme within this tale is the newfound autonomy of women - historically, Malaysia was composed of patriarchal societies, but the story's cultural narrative insinuates that women like Puteri Gunung Ledang possess inner strength and wisdom and are able to make their own decisions. The princess's actions essentially suggest recognition and respect of women's self-determination and opinions.
As mentioned before, the importance of humility and acceptance of human limitations plays a significant role in shaping the many conclusions of the story, as the Sultan's failure acknowledges that not all desires are achievable, and that some pursuits must be abandoned for the greater good. Sultan Mahmud Syah's desire to marry Puteri Gunung Ledang represents human ambition and the pursuit of power and prestige. However, the princess's impossible conditions serve as a humbling reminder of the limits of human authority. In Malaysian society, humility is often esteemed and seen as a virtue, and this story teaches that wisdom lies in understanding and accepting one's limitations.
