How I landed an industry job straight out of my life sciences PhD, without doing a post-doc

In less than 7 weeks I’ll be defending my dissertation as a final step in my PhD in Cancer Biology, and yesterday I accepted a Scientist position at a local biotechnology company. And best part: I didn’t have to do the dreaded post-doc first! Which is pretty rare for our field (but I hope it’ll be more and more common for PhD’s going into industry).

I promised I would talk about the process here, and I hope that anyone who’s aiming for the same path can walk away with some tips or at least with a familiarity of the process.

The main points I want to get across:

Network network network. You can probably just stop reading here, because this job came about all through networking. I was basically head-hunted--someone in my network (a program alumnus) contacted me on LinkedIn to ask if I wanted to apply for a position on the team she directs. So set up your LinkedIn account, keep it up to date, and use it to actively network. At the very least you should connect with the alumni in your program as you all have something in common already, and since they’re out and about in the field they would be great resources for informational interviews and job referrals.

My expertise and career goals matched the position. No brainer, of course. Even if I wasn’t contacted by the company, I would only be applying to companies I qualified for (so companies dealing with cancer since I’m my PhD is in Cancer Bio). My lab mate, for example, was finishing up his PhD in Nutritional Sciences but was applying to cancer companies with no result, because it just wasn’t the candidate those companies were looking for. My expertise was also probably what got that director’s attention in the first place and the reason she reached out. She was basically willing to wait 7 months for me (from job posting to my final start-date) because I was her ideal candidate, and not just based off my expertise alone, but our personalities matched too. She told me “we communicate well” aka our work personalities match. I know you can’t change who you are obviously, but getting along with your manager goes a long way.

That being said, employers/PIs are flexible with start dates for PhD candidates. I applied to this position 6 months before I had my defense date set and when I only knew a ballpark of “sometime in the summer”. And then during my interview process I had to keep pushing that potential start-date back and back and back. But the company understood this. So as a PhD candidate you could start applying 6 months before your expected end-date (even if it’s still a moving target), or even months earlier for post-docs (which are much more flexible than industry positions). In general, you should start looking 1 year before your finish date to see what’s out there.

It was also good luck/timing. If I had graduated earlier than the job posting, then I never would’ve had this opportunity. I also only added her to my LinkedIn network because I went to a lunch seminar where she gave a talk about working in industry. So small things that ultimately made a huge difference. Some you can’t control, but some (like going to that lunch) are definitely opportunities to seize.

I was low “flight risk”. Companies are always afraid their employees will leave the company/city for greener pastures, and that’s more common in “less popular” places to live, like the southwest desert where I’m located. But I’m from here, my grad school is here, my family’s here--so the company is making the assumption I’m not going to just up and go any time soon. You obviously can’t control where your family chooses to settle down, but you may be able to strategically choose your grad school based off of its proximity to potential companies.

And lastly, in my experience, PhD’s with no post-doc in biotech industry should expect an annual salary somewhere between $75-95k (depending on the company and cost of living), with benefits.

Ok, my full story under cut if you’d like to know more about the process I went through:

It all started when a program alumnus (or alumna, if you’re picky about your latin) named RF talked at a lunch seminar to students in my program in Feb 2019. I was really interested in her company and knew she would be a great network to have, so I emailed her later to thank her, and then added her on LinkedIn.

Fast forward to January of this year (2020) when RF messaged me on LinkedIn out of the blue asking me how close I was to graduating and if I would be interested in a position at her company. I think she wanted someone asap (so not me, I thought), but we talked more about my project, and she said she’d keep in touch. In February, she messaged me again saying a position opened up on her team and she wanted to see if I would like to apply. I said heck yes (or the more formal version), and sent in my application, with the expectation that I would be defending sometime in the summer. I also put her as my job referral and messaged her afterwards to let her know my application went through (with the hopes that maybe she could fast-track it through HR, which I think she did).

In the meantime, I messaged (also on LinkedIn) another program alumnus I knew (our time overlapped a few years) who currently works with RF and we chatted on the phone about what he does at work, how he likes it there, etc. Basically an informational interview (and also to catch up as colleagues). I was also hoping he’d put in a good word for me with RF and can attest I’m a decent human being and all that.

2 weeks later, I had a phone interview with RF, and I was super nervous going into it. I even practiced pages and pages of answers of common interview questions for a week straight. But to my surprise she opened the call with “I already know a lot about you from your CV, LinkedIn profile, and also your PhD training because we’re from the same program, so this is your chance to ask me questions!” And I was like, uhhhh awesome! The only thing she wanted to know about me was when I could start, and at that moment in time I was gunning for a July/Aug defense date.

(I also emailed her and HR afterwards to ask them whether they could match my salary expectation, which I had researched well beforehand for what was common in the field for my position and experience, and they said they could.)

We then set up the next round of interviews for April with a colleague of RF’s who used to be in the same team but now directs her own, and RF’s boss (these would have normally been on-site, but I did them over the phone bc Covid). I again messaged my friend at the company asking if he had any tips.

And then disaster struck! The company’s HR called me a week before those scheduled interviews to tell me the company had ordered a hiring freeze due to Covid and the effect it was having on the economy. Absolute bummer :( :( :(

So I then applied for a few more positions here and there, including some post-docs (which I really didn’t want to do). I got 2 rounds of interviews for a Scientist position at another local company, and as of today I still haven’t heard anything from them. oh well.

Then in June I finally heard back from RF’s company saying the hiring freeze has been lifted and whether I’m still interested? Uh, heck yes! So we continued with those 2 phone interviews I had originally scheduled back in April. They both went really well. But I still continued to apply to other positions in the meantime because I wanted to have as many options as I could.

Then 2 weeks ago (July 7) I got THE call: they wanted to offer me the position! :D

Only problem was, we needed to settle on a start-date. They of course wanted me to start like, yesterday, but my PI wanted to push back my original defense date of Aug 28 one more week to Sept 4, and also wanted me to focus on any dissertation edits for 2 weeks after that. So my earliest start-date would be Sept 21. If you remember, my defense date shifted from “sometime in the summer” to “July/August” to now September, so I was really worried the company wouldn’t accept this. I nervously waited 2 weeks for someone to call me back, and in my head I kept thinking, “I blew it I blew it”. I even sent in a job application to another company in that time.

But RF finally called me and said hey, no problem, we can do that! She told me she was willing to wait because I really was her perfect candidate (I had all the experience she wanted, and she said we communicated well aka our work-personalities matched). She had also just recently hired another graduate from our program, who is also a friend of mine, so she knew we would all mesh together very nicely.

And that’s the story folks! I’ll be starting the position remotely until it’s safe to return to the building again. They’re also working with my husband to see if he’s a good candidate for some of their other open positions (we’re both in the biotech field). We’re both super excited about this new chapter in our lives.

All this because I attended the lunch seminar RF talked at all last year and then added her on LinkedIn. When people talk about opportunities lurking behind every corner, they really did mean that.

so this is the song i’ve latched onto for my mc dom. i have a headcanon (i think i’ve said it on main a lot, and i’ve even made edits for it) that after the breakup, which everyone else thinks is real, but they think is fake, but is actually real, dom drives to the studio super late at night and just belts out the lyrics while sobbing just to get them off of her shoulders. and it accidentally becomes a hit! which makes raleigh feel even more like shit

not to get too in detail but raleigh is an ~active~ individual, so i have no doubt that during long tours, they’re facetiming mc for some quality time. and this one’s just sensual and sweet like raleigh’s relationship is so!

not gonna put the lyrics but this would absolutely be on one of raleigh’s playlists that they play pre-concert to get hyped up, or a workout playlist. i just feel it in my bones that their fav music is from the 90′s ok

If you had to change the pairing’s very first meeting, how would you change it? their canon first meeting is already so good SHDGFLJASHG but if i had to choose a different one that's still within the context of mankai... meeting as kids and losing touch and coming back together completely different at mankai

What song fits your pairing the most? uhhHHhhHHH i don't have a real answer but i do have a partial playlist for one of my misukazu aus and the only two songs in it are furaregai girl by sayuri and champagne's for celebrating by mayday parade and i feel like that says enough sldhgalsdhfalsh

What is your favorite AU/prompt idea/trope for your pairing? ALL MISUKAZU AUS ARE GOOD but. i really love any au where their first meeting is in the future and both are still kind of lost but they're Older and it's hard to let themselves fall into the easy trust they find in canon. i just think that'd be neat.

Do you prefer canon ideas or do you have your own headcanons for them? I'VE SAID THIS MANY TIMES BUT CANON MISUKAZU GIVES OFF MADE FOR EACH OTHER VIBES AND USUALLY I DON'T VIBE WITH THAT BUT THEY REALLY ARE WHAT THE OTHER NEEDS... AND I THINK EVEN IF THEY HAD TO PART THEY'D STILL BE ABLE TO BE BETTER PEOPLE BC THEY HAD MET

Favorite canon moment of them? THERE ARE SO MANY but the one that immediately comes to mind is misumi carrying drunk kazu to bed (latest bday line) because drunk kazu is so soft and it implies that misumi wanted to wish happy birthday to kazu pretty late... what did he want to give him...

Least favorite canon moment of them? hmm... there's not really one i can think of??? IM SORRY I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY I LOVE ALL THEIR CANON MOMENTS

Favorite headcanon trope/idea? (Your own or someone else’s) this is somehow both vague and very specific but i think misukazu gives off this vibe: He's beautiful. I can't tell him. or "Kazu is always beautiful~" Don't call me that, Kazu thinks. I'm not. so... insecurities i guess ????? AJSHAJJD

Favorite aspect of them/their relationship dynamics? THIS IS GOING TO SOUND SO CHEESY but i love how /real/ they allow themselves to be around each other. misukazu at their best is when one thinks "you're you. and i love that you" and the other knows this. i just. THEY VALIDATE THE OTHER SO MUCH CRIES

Least favorite aspect of them/their relationship dynamics? (Can be headcannon) this isn't a "least fav" so much as "it makes me sad" but if either of them showed any sign of not being interested anymore the other is more likely to give up then push anything. sort of like "it was bound to happen, so i'll enjoy now until they drop me" or EVEN WORSE they think the other would be better off without them and pushes them away. so yeah the fact i can see one of these happening makes me sad.

If they aren’t a canon pairing, how would you get them together? they give off "everyone knows we're dating but us" energy but at the same time i feel like they'd acknowledge there's something and just not define it bc a) they don't need to (misumi) or b) they're too nervous to (kazu). in other words i think one day they are holding hands and misumi says "kazu? is this dating?" and kazu holds his breath before asking "do you want it to be?"

If you had to take them and plunk them into another fandom, what fandom would that be? Why? i think theyd be hilarious in any sports animanga (kazu is manager tho bc noodle arms but maybe they bond when misumi walks him through some of his usual training menu one night - ahem. anyway) BUT ALSO horimiya au...

How hard is it write/draw your pairing? Scale of 1-10. AJDHAJDHSF I REALLY LOVE THEM SO IT COMES PRETTY EASILY... but sometimes you try to put them in tropes and realize they would Just Not Work Like That. idk where i'm going with this. but yeah. anyway 3 for sankaku.

Which character of your pairing would be the one to break up with the other? Why? OOOOOH BOY well. i think it could be either of them. i don't think they'd break up for lack of love but too much love and wanting the other to be happy and thinking that the only way to give them that is to let them go. so i guess the question is which of them would be more likely to be selfish and hold on. thinking this way, i think misumi would be more likely to break-up, bc kazu has lots of friends who are better than him!! and misumi is more ready to leave if he thinks he needs to than kazu is. now im sad.

Are they relatable as characters or as a pairing? THE NUMBER OF TIMES I'VE BEEN CALLED KAZU KIN... in all seriousness kazu's struggles with speaking out and (shinobi spoilers) his uncertainty over his future hit real close to home... while i don't relate as much as misumi, his struggles always manage to tear my heart into pieces... ((oversharing alert) i guess what really separates me from misumi is his struggle with his desire to connect with family who has treated him poorly... whereas im more "lol fuck you") tldr i relate to kazu slightly more LOL

On an estimate, how many posts have you made about them? as of september 28th 2020 i make up 11/78 fics on ao3 in the romantic misukazu tag and 2/12 in the platonic one. i may have brainrot.

What made you decide to ship them? TBH I FINISHED THE MAIN STORY AND WENT "OH MY GOD... THAT'S MY SHIP" but now that i'm here i continue to ship them because they have the potential to bring out both the best and the worst in each other and i'm all about that

Favorite genre for them? (Angst, fluff, etc.) angst. i just. angst hurt/comfort all the way. im so sorry babies.

lol you thought there would just be 21 ANYWAY EXTRA 1: how do they spend breaks/vacation? they'd travel a lot when they're older!! kazunari loves to travel and misumi would follow kazunari anywhere (also, new triangles!!) so they go somewhere new whenever they have the time. however i think eventually one or both of their future careers will take them anywhere and everywhere anyway, so their "ideal vacation" might turn into an evening in, cuddling and catching up (as if they didn't already send play-by-play updates over the phone of whatever they did during the day)

EXTRA 2: first date? i don't they ever have an explicit first date, but if asked they'll cite the time they had a picnic in the park turned triangle hunt turned accidental dip in the duck pond. at least, kazunari will. misumi just tilts his head and wonders what you mean.

EXTRA 3: gifts? IM FEELING REALLY CHEESY SO I'M MAKING THIS ABOUT ANNIVERSARY GIFTS they both end up getting each other jewelry (although kazu was really really nervous bc he wasn't sure if misumi would wear it). kazu gets misumi a bracelet (with triangles, of course although misumi only wears it sometimes because he doesn't want to lose it) and misumi gets kazu a pair of triangle earrings "so we can match!" and kazunari combusts at the implications

EXTRA 4: sharing clothes THEY'RE ACTUALLY AROUND THE SAME SIZE (and tend to wear baggier stuff barring kazu's skinny jeans)... but they have completely different Styles so it's still really obvious when steal each other's stuff ahdjajdkaf. as cute as kazu would look in sumi's sweatshirt i think the much more likely scenario is kazu wrapping misumi in his jackets because this boy nEVER BRINGS HIS ANYWHERE anyway just. accidental shared wardrobe misukazu.

EXTRA 5: lake house au consider: kazunari living in a house on the shore of a lake for a summer for Art Purposes (and a little bit for Dealing With Life purposes but he's not gonna admit that) and meets his lake neighbor misumi who kazu thinks might be a ghost or spirit for a while but he actually just lives further down the lake and misumi unknowingly helps kazu with his Life Issues and maybe they fall in love

What inspired you to rp your muse? — twipri has been my favorite video game of all time since i first played it the xmas after it came out, when i was 7. it was an unbelievably huge influence on my life, and got me through a whole lot of shit i’d have to go through up until i was a teenager. it was a constant for me, a comfort. and link, being the protagonist, was of course the center of it. i connected to him really hard, and becoming him whenever i played the game was like magic to me as a kid. honestly, i dont know why i didnt write him until this year, because he’s been such an easy headspace for me to slip into for years. ig i just figured it was about time? id already written both tp zel and midna at separate points, so it was only right to complete the trio ksjfgh

What keeps your inspiration going? — the game itself, its soundtrack, art, linked universe and its little fandom, and you guys! just seeing all of your posts and your passion for loz and its characters helps fuel the love i have for it too!

If someone really hates your character, how do you take it? — hkljfg does anyone hate link??? like. he’s link. he’s neutral at worst. but it’s not my business if someone hates him, so to each their own ig

Are you okay with people pointing out your grammatical errors? — mm i don’t mind it, but i don’t really see the point. rp is a form of writing that doesn’t need much editing, and when it does, we are our own editors, so of course we’re going to make mistakes and overlook them. english is a complicated and hard language, and typos/misspellings/grammar errors happen and it’s not a big deal

Do you think you are easy going as a mun? — yes!! i’m a very laid-back person in general i think, and of course i have things i won’t tolerate and i’ll speak up when i need to, but at the end of the day rp is a hobby, and it’s something we do to have fun, and i know that having fun is the most important part of doing this. though, sometimes i think my anxiety & fear of confrontation might make me a little too lenient on things like my own rules tho kjfhg

Pairing: Peter Parker X F!Stark!Reader A/N: tumblr needs to get their act together because this is the SECOND (2nd) time i’ve posted this. i edited the tags and everything on it DISAPPEARED. anyways i hope you like this despite my obvious anguish bc this is one of my favs so far.

Warnings: Mentions of death, manipulation, angst if you look close, and depictions of action sequences.

Y/N Stark was on a plane to Venice all because of her boyfriend, Peter Parker. She thoroughly convinced herself on not going for the main reason being that she wasn’t sure if she would enjoy it because of everything that came before, including her Father’s death. Peter knew that, but he also knew that she deserved a break. After using the infamous Parker Puppy eyes, she packed a suitcase and chose a window seat next to him. “How was your Spider-Man appearance last night?” she teased with a knowing smile. His Aunt May hosted a charity event and in efforts to gain more awareness, and invited Spider-Man over to say a few words. Peter bit his tongue, remembering how awful it was. “I only said four words but I think I nailed it!” Sadly, Y/N could see through his lies. “It could’ve gone much worse! Oh that reminds me, apparently Nick Fury tried to call me-”

“Wait really? What’d he say?” She shifted in her seat, using Peter’s jacket as a blanket. “I don’t know I didn’t answer it.”

“You’re joking. Peter he’s going to tear up the city looking for you now!”

“I just wanted a relaxing vacation for once!”

“That’s out the window now that you ghosted him are you kidding me?” Y/N knew from personal experience that leaving Fury hanging was the quickest way to death. Peter had a point, but she knew that this was inescapable. Peter frowned, not realizing how much of a big deal it was. “He’s probably going to call me instead. Don’t be shocked if he’s one of the flight attendants, Parker. I warned you.”

After eight hours, the group had finally landed in Venice. After setting their bags down in their ‘charming’ hotel, the class had an hour to kill on sightseeing. On the plane, Peter had been memorizing certain Italian phrases to help conversation flow smoothly, but for the most part it made things worse. As they were ordering gelato, he stumbled over his words. Y/N tried to stifle a laugh over his poor pronunciation, before speaking for him. Peter was shocked as Y/N continued taking in the sights. “You didn’t tell me you speak Italian.”

“I can’t reveal all of my secrets at once,” she winked. Peter looked down, chuckling before shooting his head back up and looking to her. “What? Is it the ‘Peter Tingle’?” Usually he’d make a deal out of it, but this time he just simply nodded and ran towards the canals, Y/N following closely behind.

Water gushed up, raining down as it soaked everyone. “What the hell is that?” Y/N stood up analyzing the scene. “It’s some sort of hydro man? Get everyone out!” she pointed her finger towards safety, leading everyone away from the danger. Ned was one of the last ones to flee, but she stopped him. “Make sure nobody sees me and Peter, got it?” He nodded, “Has anyone ever told you that you’re the definition of power couple?” She rolled her eyes and smirked at the comment before seeing Peter crashing into the bridge. Y/N ran to him, pulling him to his feet. Ready to fight, they saw a trail of green smoke contain the monster.

Left and right, buildings crumbled. Peter was at the bell tower, webbing everything up to minimize the damage while Y/N stood low, scanning for any openings. With one final green blast, the water erupted one more time before disappearing. All of them finally had time to catch their breath. The mysterious man hovered closer to them and spoke, “Thanks for your help. I think we’ll see each other soon.”

Once they had dried off, Peter & Y/N took a seat on the stairs of the hotel lobby. On the small TV in the corner, Italian reporters displayed footage of what had happened moments ago. “They’re calling him Mysterio, man of mystery or something.” MJ remarked.

“I’m just trying to wonder why he has a fishbowl on his head and a cape. That’s poor costume design right there,” Ned said making everyone laugh. With a look of disinterest, Flash crossed his arms. “Yeah but he’s no Spider-Man.” Y/N gave a look to Peter who stayed silent, “You’re right. Spider-Man is much cooler.” Flash’s eyes lit up with excitement, as if he were a child again. “You’ve met Spider-Man?!”

“I thought that was a given. The Avengers are practically my family.” she spoke softly, trying not to let her emotions get the best of her.

“No way! What’s he like?”

“He’s great and super funny. Not to mention he’s kind of cute.” Peter coughed, trying to cover the fact he was blushing. Flash on the other hand didn’t buy it, “He can’t be that cute. You’re dating Peter out of all people.” Y/N simply glared, sending a chill down his spine.

Ned & Peter resigned to their shared hotel room. Just as they entered, Peter’s best friend was shot down by a tranquilizer dart, crashing to the floor. He jumped, turning to see Nick Fury sitting on the small couch. “You’re a hard man to track, Spider-Man.” Shit. Y/N was right. Then again, when was she not?

After a few disruptions he was taken to an underground base to discuss the threats in private. Y/N stood next to the same man they saw earlier, whose actual name was Quentin Beck. “I told you that he’d find you.” Y/N muttered. Beck continued to explain his dilemma. “I come from earth, just not your earth.” “Are you saying that there’s a multiverse because that’d be insane! Actually impossible, that would change the way we think of time and space as we know it!” Peter continued to ramble, before being met with a bored glare from Agent Hill. Quentin looked at the boy with empathy, “Hey. Don’t apologize for being the smartest one in the room.” Y/N knew that it was true, hell the kid was a brainiac, but something felt off about the man. He had taken an interest to both of them and seemed very enthralled. Despite his backstory, it felt as if it was too coincidental to be true. Essentially the mission was to stop the most powerful Elemental in Prague, but it meant ditching their class. Y/N had her fair share of missions already and insisted on going while Peter was reluctant. Fury stayed silent for the rest of the meeting, handing Peter a glasses case before dismissing both of them.

The next morning, Mr. Harrington gathered all of the students for an announcement. “I know the itinerary says that we’re going to Paris, but the travel agency called and offered us a deal to go to Prague instead!” The class cheered while Peter’s face looked pale. Y/N stood next to him, taking his hand into hers. “We need to get some more rest on the bus, we have a fire monster to kill.”

Hours later, Y/N & Peter were in position. They sported their new suits, that were essentially the same thing they were used to but just black to stay incognito. Y/N perched on a tile roof opposite of Peter. There were small crowds of people, mingling amongst the square. Seeping through a metal grate, molten began to pour out. “It’s showtime.” As the lava monster began to form, everyone sprung into action. “Make sure that it doesn’t touch any metal, that’s how it grows!” Y/N eyes darted to the ferris wheel where she spotted Ned & Betty stuck at the top. She stuck her hand out, moving the entire ferris wheel away from the fire elemental. Y/N had telekinesis as a result of a mission gone wrong, and only used it in emergencies.

The monster roared, chasing Peter up the wall as he flipped away. He webbed up a metal pole and jumped, yanking it away from its reach. Quentin took a hit at the monster, only making it even more furious. The battle seemed to have reached a dead end, as it inched closer and closer to the ferris wheel; leaving everything ablaze. “Kid, hold it back!” Y/N put all of her strength into pushing away the elemental, but it was just too strong. She yelled in pain, giving it her all. “That’s it, I’m going in.”

“Beck, what are you doing?” Peter screamed.

“What I should’ve done before!” He ran into the creature, engulfed in flames. The monster tore apart and shattered apart, turning into ashes. Y/N collapsed on the ground at the sudden loss as Peter ran to her, making sure she wasn’t hurt. “Hey hey hey, we did it. Are you alright?” She slowly got to her feet, panting. “I think so? Where’d he go?”

Quentin stirred, before standing back up. “I think I need a drink. Come on, let’s go.” Y/N and Peter looked to each other, “We’re underage.” “What about it?” He continued to walk away, taking his helmet off. Y/N took notice of his face before placing a hand on her boyfriend’s shoulder, “You should go with him, I think I’ll sit this one out, make sure that everyone knows we’re okay.” He squeezed her hand before following after.

Y/N peeled off her suit and freshened up. Her legs were covered with cuts and she spent a while recovering. There was a knock at her door to reveal MJ & Ned. She beckoned them in, locking the door. MJ raised a brow to the suit. Y/N never told her, but she trusted her friend enough to see it. “Something just doesn’t add up. I feel like I’ve seen him before.” She tapped her watch to display a hologram. “SID, do we have any files on a Quentin Beck?” SID, or ‘Stark Industries’ Database’ was her father’s final gift to her.

From a young age, Y/N always had an interest in technology and innovation, something she inherited from her father. Even if it were past her bedtime, Tony would sneak her into the lab; projecting constellations onto the ceiling. He would point out each one and tell stories about what they meant. As little Y/N began to nod off to sleep, he would whisper “I love you more than the sun and stars, pumpkin.” Despite being tired, she always had the energy to respond. “But the sun is a star.” As she grew up, it became their inside joke. Smart kid but a smarter mouth, Pepper would say. When her father passed away, he left a note and the watch. On the band, ‘I love you more than the sun and stars’ was engraved in silver letters. Y/N struggled sometimes, but felt at ease once she knew he was always with her.

SID continued to sift through as Ned marveled at the technology. “Y/N that’s why I came here. I found this at the battle. Looks like some piece of a robot, maybe a drone?” MJ handed her the sleek white machine part. Turning it over in her hands, it whirred to life and projected a scene identical to what happened at the battle. “What the hell,” she whispered.

“One match to Quentin Beck, former Stark Industries employee.” SID chimed. It didn’t take long for her to realize what was happening. “We need to get Peter.” Y/N rushed to the door, before hearing her window slide open. Her boyfriend took off his mask, freezing at the sight of MJ. “It’s fine, she knows. Listen, babe, I need to use EDITH real quick.” His mouth hung open as he tried to find the words, “It’s with Quentin.”

“Why the hell does he have it?”

“I gave it to him!”

“Peter Benjamin Parker, you’re going to be the end of me! That was his plan all along!” Y/N rubbed her temples. “What’s going on?” Ned gestured to SID and the drone piece when Peter realized he messed up big time. Y/N slipped into her suit, turning away from anyone. “Wait, where are you going?” Peter held her arms, worried. “I need to tell Fury, he’s in Berlin and we don’t have any time to waste.”

“I’m going with you!”

“You can’t. If he worked with Stark Industries then I’m the one he’s after.”

“That makes no sense, he’ll hurt you,” he frowned as tears started to form in his eyes. He couldn’t lose her too, especially if he knew that it was his fault. Y/N cupped his cheek in her hand, pressing a lingering kiss to his lips. “No. He won’t. MJ and Ned, tell Mr. Harrington I had family matters to attend. Peter, Happy will pick you up to keep you updated.” They all nodded and Y/N grabbed her mask before opening the window. “I love you,” Peter said.

“I love you too.” Just like that, she was out and after Quentin.

A few hours later, Y/N arrived to the sleek building where Fury was supposed to be. She was still dressed in her suit, but wasn’t phased. There were bigger problems to face. A black car eased towards her as she stopped in her tracks. The tinted windows rolled down, showing Fury in the driver’s seat. She slipped in as he drove off, beckoning her to stay quiet before she started talking.

As soon as they made it into a conference room, the worried girl started talking at lightning speed catching him up to date along with Maria. “So you’re saying that Mr. Beck isn’t who he says he is? I’ll admit, I had my doubts about him.”

“He’s a total fraud after power and lies. Here I have this as proof!” She slid the drone piece in their direction. “We have to act fast. Let me go after him, I’m the one he wants anyways.” Nick kept his stone cold glare and before either of them speak, their surroundings flickered and disappeared. “He’s here.” A drone threw an explosion in their direction, as Y/N dived to protect him. She seemed to phase through the ground, landing on her back in a concrete warehouse. “Wow, Y/N. Just when I thought we were finally bonding. I knew Fury had to die, but now you’re convincing me that you need to go too.” Y/N spun around, drones appearing out of thin air surrounding her. “Stop hiding, you coward!”

Her surroundings shifted into a pitch black room, Mysterio inching towards her. “You know, you’re just like your Father. That arrogant son of a bitch only did what he thought would help himself.” Y/N threw a punch at him, only to realize that it was a solid concrete pillar. She winced, seeing Morgan standing at the top of Stark Tower, confused. “Y/N what’s happening?” Her head pounded and she couldn’t see straight. “Stop it!” Beck stood behind her little sister, the ground disappearing as they fell. It seemed endless and she couldn’t wrap her head around it until she crumpled on top of a car. Drones whirled over her head, taking her into another vision. She stretched out her arms, desperate to move them away but they only grew closer.

“You hide behind your Father’s lies, thinking that you Starks are so high and mighty. I’m here to show the truth!” Y/N stood upon stone, a statue of Mysterio looming over her. “Mysterio is the truth!” The weathered stone crumbled, suffocating her. Y/N gasped, face covered in dust and blood. “You’re the reason why your father died, don’t deny it.” His voice echoed into a hollow room. In front of her was his tombstone. Her breath hitched in her throat, before a decaying Iron Man suit took her into a chokehold. She had tears in her eyes, but remembered that it wasn’t real. It shifted once more, this time Tony laying against a rock. The light in his eyes were long forgotten. “You failed me. You’ll,” he stammered “never be enough.”

“Dad!” she reached for him, and closed her eyes. “This isn’t real.”

“Oh, but isn’t it?” Y/N stood on a fire escape 100 floors high as Peter gripped to the edge. “Y/N please,” he pleaded. His eyes were bruised and nose bleeding. “Peter!” The floor creaked and her heart thumped. “Y/N help me!” She grunted, pulling him up. “You’re okay,” she whispered pressing her forehead to his. His eyes turned red, “I never needed you.” Peter pushed her back as the illusion dissolved, and into a speeding train.

She tried to yell, but couldn’t bring herself to breathe. Barely clinging on, she had split vision. Slipping through the train door, Y/N slipped into unconsciousness and away from everything.

Peter wasn’t able to focus at all the entire day Y/N was gone. Ned tried his best to distract him with Star Wars anecdotes, but even that didn’t work. During lunch, he saw Happy talking to his teachers before motioning him to follow. Peter got into the jet, Happy not taking a single second to waste. “What happened? Where’s Y/N? Is she okay?”

“She’s in Broek op Langedijk-”

“What? Where is that? How close are we?”

“Netherlands. We’re an hour out, but she’s alive don’t worry-” Peter scoffed, pacing in the jet. “How am I not supposed to worry? I love her and she can be on the verge of dying right now-”

“Peter-”

“I knew I should have gone with her-”

“Peter! I’m going as fast as I can, but I need to concentrate. I care about her too, okay? We just need to try to calm down, can you do that for me?”

As soon as they touched down in a field of tulips, Peter jumped out. Y/N’s eyes were bloodshot and her arms scratched. There was a red stain on her neon orange shirt that she definitely wasn’t wearing when he last saw her. “Y/N thank god you’re okay-” he took her into a hug, only to be pushed away. “Stop it! Get away from me!” He raised his hands up defensively, and felt sharp pain seep through his heart. He had fought villains and had been on the verge of dying, but even that didn’t hurt as much as this.

“Y/N, please.” She was taken back to the moment Quentin messed with her mind. His voice was exactly the same, making the battle in her mind even more difficult to fight.

“No, no. You’re not real!” He stepped closer to her, reaching for her hands. In his grasp, she made fists; trying to hit him. Y/N’s voice trembled, “Let me go! Come on, Beck! Tell me how I failed everyone I know!” She looked him dead in the eye. This wasn’t the Y/N he knew. Now, she looked so weak; something she had never been before. “I’m not Beck, Y/N I swear. I’m here for you and I want to help you.” His eyes were glossy, the girl he loved didn’t want anything to do with him anymore. “Promise me that you’re not some sort of illusion!”

“Y/N I promise!”

“What’s something only Peter & I would know?” He immediately thought back to their first date a year ago. “Okay on our first date I got you flowers, but I didn’t know you were allergic.” Y/N seemed to ease up as he continued. “After you recovered, we went to the fire escape. I told you I love you, even if it might have seemed to early but I told the truth,” Truth, Quentin’s voice echoed in her mind. “We kissed and May saw us! Remember, she dropped the snack platter?”

Y/N ran into his arms, sobbing. He kissed her and wiped the tears away. Peter took her face into his hands. He whispered words into her ear, stroking her back. “You’re real. You’re here.” He pressed another kiss to her forehead.

“Yeah, I’m here. I always will be.”

The envelope arrives a week or so before Saint Cichol’s Day. It’s made of creamy, off-white paper and sealed with an actual wax seal bearing the griffin knight of Faerghus, because royals apparently have to be extra even with something as mundane as sending holiday cards.

It’s actually addressed to Claude’s mother ( President Juliette von Riegan, the envelope reads in elegant, swirling script), but as First Son of the Leicester Alliance, Claude considers himself plenty qualified to snatch it up from the pile of holidays-related mail and whisk it off to his room.

He flops down onto his bed before breaking open the seal. The card inside is just as fancy as the exterior, done up in dark blue and silver highlights, and it’s the funniest thing Claude’s seen all week.

Now, the Faerghan royal family has been sending Saint Cichol’s cards to the von Riegans since the beginning of his mother’s presidency, so this is nothing out of the ordinary. It also doesn’t say anything special, besides Merry Saint Cichol’s day & best wishes from House Blaiddyd in embossed letters.

What is new, however, is that this time, it doesn’t have one of the Blaiddyds’ formal state portraits front and center. Sure enough, King Lambert and Queen Patricia are posing, flashing toothpaste-ad-worthy smiles at the camera, but there the resemblance comes to a brutal stop.

The photo features Dimitri, clad in possibly the gaudiest holiday sweater Claude’s ever seen. As per ugly sweater tradition, it sports an unholy amount of red and green, but nothing can dethrone the roaring lion’s head emblazoned over Dimitri’s torso, myriads of multicolored lights haphazardly sewn into its mane.

And he still manages to look like Prince Charming straight out of a collector’s edition of Fódlan’s Fables, because Dimitri Alexandre Blaiddyd is unfairly photogenic like that.

Seiros, life is unfair. Or maybe it isn't, because it’s given him a boyfriend who miraculously still looks good while looking like he’s been hit and run over by a garlands-filled truck.

Because he’s the most loyal best friend anyone could ask for, Claude sits up, holds the card to the lamp on his bedside table, snaps a picture and sends it to Hilda. Her reply is almost instantaneous.

Claude snorts and taps out of the conversation. Not a week goes by that Hilda doesn’t block him at least once. Whatever the reason - from posting their kindergarten playdates pictures on the Golden Deer group chat to that time he jokingly hit on her brother -, she always ends up unblocking him within the hour.

In the meantime, there’s someone else he wants to talk to. Claude flips to the second topmost conversation on his phone, lays back and starts typing.

fearthedeer : it’s the BEST how did you not tell me about this before

“...And with that, my dear citizens, all that's left for me to do is wish you a Merry Saint Cichol's day. Hold your loved ones close, so that they might share the holidays' cheers with you. I know I will.”

Dimitri flashes the camera another bright smile before the operator signals to him that they're done filming. From the treshold, Sylvain gives him a thumbs-up, and Dedue an approving nod. Only then does Dimitri allow himself to relax, shoulders slumping ever so slightly.

It isn't the address that bothers him, nor the ever-present fear of slipping up in front of millions of Faerghus citizens on live television. He's been groomed in protocol for public appearances, virtual or not, since he was old enough to walk. No, it's the creeping realization that, year after year, he gives a little more time to the people, and keeps a little less to himself.

It's selfish, which is precisely why Dimitri's only vaguely mentioned it even to his closest friends. They'd whisk him off to some holiday destination at the speed of light if he asked, he knows, but it doesn't feel right to shirk his duties — even though Sylvain wouldn't call it shirking, only giving himself a well-deserved break.

After a few minutes of idle chatter with the camera crew - Dimitri's made it a habit to try and get to know everyone he works with, to the point he can now ask after some of the operators' children by name -, he finally steps out of the royal office requisitioned for the occasion. When he idly checks his phone, the screen flashes with half a dozen notifications : a picture of Felix and Ingrid on St Cichol's shopping (presumably for Glenn), some last minute recommendations from both his father and Duke Fraldarius, and…

Dimitri picks up the pace, until he’s almost flying past the castle’s front gates and into the main courtyard. At first, nothing seems more out of the ordinary : the gatekeepers even shoot him perplexed looks as their crown prince stares out, half disheveled, at the snow-covered cobblestones.

Then a nondescript black cab pulls up, somehow unbothered by security checks, and everything suddenly pieces itself together.

Dimitri’s down the staircase before anyone can stop him, right as the cab’s door open and a silhouette clad in a vibrant yellow sweater steps out. Claude’s barely finished handing the driver a tip when Dimitri comes to a brutal stop just a few steps from him, heart beating wildly against his ribcage.

They exchange pictures pretty much everyday, but there’s an inherent brilliance to Claude a screen can’t capture. It’s something, Dimitri thinks, in the way his smile blooms first over his lips then reaches all the way to his eyes. Every time, it’s like watching the sun rise.

Claude opens his arms. Wordlessly, Dimitri lets himself be drawn into his embrace, curls around him and breathes in the fresh scent of pine needles.

Eventually, he finds it in himself to step back. His hands stay firmly planted on Claude’s shoulders, grounding himself in the other’s presence. “It really is you.”

Claude grins and tips an imaginary hat at him. “The one and only.”

“Flames, I—” Dimitri takes a deep breath in an attempt to compose himself. “How...when did you get here?”

“On a plane this morning. And before you ask, it wasn't on taxpayers' money,” Claude quips.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m delighted to see you, but why now?” Dimitri’s brain frantically cycles through their relationship milestones. Their anniversary’s in early summer, and Claude’s birthday isn’t for another few months, and��

Claude gently takes his face into his hands, tiptoeing a little to rest their foreheads together, and Dimitri’s mind comes to a standstill.

“Hey, calm down, okay? You’re overthinking everything again.” Claude pauses, breathes in, breathes out. “Would you believe me if I said I’m a little late for your birthday?”

Oh. It’s true. His birthday, a national holiday. How did it slip his mind again?

As if able to read his mind, Claude chuckles. “Really, I just wanted to see you again. In person. I already meant it to be a Saint Cichol’s surprise, and our texts the other day were just...additional motivation, if you will.”

“You’re amazing,” Dimitri says, as earnest as he’s ever been. This time, it’s Claude’s turn to blush, a rosy flush creeping up his neck and onto his cheeks. It offers a nice contrast to the paleness of the snowflakes that have started accumulating in his hair, dusting his dark curls with white.

It occurs to Dimitri that perhaps they should have had this conversation inside.

“Come,” he tells Claude, slinging an arm around his boyfriend’s shoulders to steer him back towards the castle’s warmth. “You must be freezing.”

Claude snorts and tucks his chin down into the collar of his coat. “Only because your country considers negative temperature to be mild weather.”

“It’s only starting to get chilly, really⎯” Dimitri cuts himself off when Claude shoots him a half-exasperated, half-fond look.

Before he can fumble himself into another clumsy explanation, Claude tugs him down by the lapels of his jacket and presses a kiss to his lips. It courses through him like lightning, all the way down to the tips of his toes, and it lingers even after Claude pulls away.

“Well, you’re here to keep me warm, aren’t you? Lead the way.”

Like this, his love is bright and lovely, the great hall’s flickering hearth painting him in broad strokes of honey and gold.

Dimitri takes Claude’s hand, and follows.

advice for incoming freshmen

hey guys! here’s a list of some tips i made for incoming freshmen. i thought i’d share some advice/knowledge i’ve accumulated over the years too. everything’s under the cut. if you have any questions/concerns, feel free to message me! ☀️ (tw: long post)

1. one of the biggest fears many people have entering high school is not making friends. however, there are MANY opportunities where you can make friends! besides being friendly with who you sit with in class, try joining a sport, club, extra curricular, etc. i’m not saying making friends is the easiest thing in the world- i still struggle with it today. but don’t put yourself down if you’re not immediately friends with everyone in the school in the first week- it’ll take some time to develop. remember that everyone else is just as scared as you are, and they aren’t gonna come out of their shells until you do as well.

2. depending on your school, they may start throwing college shit at u on day one (although unlikely). no matter what, don’t stress right now!! the college process really doesn’t begin until the weeks leading up to the summer of junior year. you have time!! it’s ok to not know what you want to do. college has an “undecided” major for a reason.

3. V O L U N T E E R. i cannot stress this enough. it has soso many benefits and freshman year will most likely be the most time-free year you have. find a position at your local zoo, library, camp, hospital, etc. it’s a great resume booster and can aid you in the college application process (additionally, if you have an honors society that requires volunteer hours, you’ll need them anyways). also, you get to help people !

4. freshman year is going to teach you what real high school work is. you may struggle, and it’s ok! i was one of the “bright” kids that had their grades drop once i entered high school, and yeah, it did a lot to my self esteem. but throughout the years i picked myself up- i embraced help from my peers/teachers, i figured out what method of studying works best (pro tip: studying for math? look over the basic rules and do thousands of practice problems. science that isn’t math based? quizlet and khan academy. history? quizlet.), i learned that it’s OK to get a grade under a 90/A-. it’s going to seem tough at first, but just remember that you’re adjusting to a completely new environment and work ethic. you will get through it!! please shoot me an ask if you ever need help i’ll always answer. (edit: also do ur homework!!! it could be the difference between a B+ and an A-.)

5. imagine the crustiest person in your grade right now. now imagine them trying to hit on a kid that’s four years younger than you. gross, right? that’s exactly what a senior hitting on a freshman is like!! do not do that shit!!! there is NO reason why a senior should be trying to hook up with you when they’re 17-18 and you’re 14-15. that shit is NASTY. do NOT date seniors (even juniors are sketchy).

6. high school is where you will probably encounter alcohol/drugs/sex/etc at some point. do not be pressured!! if you don’t wanna smoke or drink then don’t do it (if you’re with the type of people who pressure, you better run). ive personally never had an experience where i was pressured, and people were usually respectful, but i can’t speak the same for everyone else. wanna get fucked up and party with your friends? be careful! i’m not promoting underage drinking but lets be honest a lot of kids do it. no sense in trying to pretend like that isn’t the real world. if you’re invited to some party by someone you KNOW has a bad rep, then don’t go!! you’ll have more opportunities.

7. if you’re worried about SATs/college admissions exams, you have a year. kids in my school are kinda crazy and were studying freshman year which made NO sense to me. end of sophomore year/beginning of junior year is usually adequate (plus- the main rule with SATs/ACTs is that you should take the test NO MORE than three times- that’s three chances!! i personally did well on my SAT, so if u have any questions feel free to ask me.

8. back to the point of pressure - if you’re going to a gifted and talented program/school, you will most likely feel academic pressure. with so many bright and smart peers, your standards will end up being much higher than the general population. i’m speaking from experience.

9. student government is usually a popularity contest. if you don’t win, don’t beat yourself up. if you do, congrats!

10. take pictures! save holiday cards! make memories!! i sincerely regret not taking photos (with me in them!!) during my freshman and sophomore years. there are a lot of great memories that i didn’t record because i was too embarrassed to get in front of a camera. i’ve learned that i’d rather cringe at a photo i look bad in in the privacy of my own phone, rather than not have a picture at all.

11. start developing good studying habits right away. what motivated me was getting cute/colorful pens, highlighters, erasers, post-its, etc., and making my notes look really pretty. i have my own personal post-it collection now. if you find ways to make studying even remotely fun/interesting, it will be extremely beneficial in the long run. i remember the summer before my junior year, i was excited to go back literally because i wanted to use my new pens.

12. this is a future piece of advice, but i would say there’s a 99% chance that you will be friends with mostly different people by senior year. you might have a core few, or a bestie, but myself and many others know that there are people who we were best friends with freshman year that don’t say hi to us in the halls senior year.

13. listen, there are gonna be some snake ass bitches. there’s no avoiding it. just don’t pay attention to them!! they get off on thinking they’re better than you. the best way to no longer deal with someone you don’t like is to just not associate with them. i’m obviously over simplifying these situations, but its usually not that deep. if it’s to the point where it’s causing you a great amount of stress, then it may be something you need to talk to a guidance counselor about.

14. please. do. not. run. and scream. in. the. halls. who do u think u are?? it’s 8 AM i don’t want to hear your screeching voice as you run into 7 people!!!!!

15. the freshmen are usually the joke of the school. you’ll hear you guys referred to as gremlins in some way, shape, or form. just deal with it, you’ll understand when you’re no longer freshmen (unless someone’s being unnecessarily mean!!).

16. make friends with your teachers!!!!!!!!! stay after class to have a little conversation with them. email them after school. bring them gifts on major holidays. IT WILL PAY OFF. letters of recommendation? done! need a teacher to sign off on something? done! minorly messed up in class? they’ll let it go bc they like you! this will also probably result in an increase in your character/participation grades.

17. make a travel pack that you keep in your bag - a few small bills, pads/tampons (for those who need), pen, pencil, bobby pins, nail file, hair elastic, gum/mints, small perfume, band-aids, charger, etc.

18. thrift books sells books for really cheap!! also, ALWAYS check other places before ordering from normal bookstores (i’m looking at u barnes & noble)- they’re most likely cheaper.

19. i’m not gonna be one of those people who is like “school is the best!! it can be great for anyone if you just try!!” bc that shit aint true. it might suck ass for some of you. just know that high school isn’t your life. some people act like your life ends after high school. we’re 14-18 years old and still have so much to learn and see. if you set up a countdown to the end of high school your first day of freshman year, so be it.

20. your teachers are people too. they’re not there for you to use and abuse. they have families, problems, LIVES. they also have 3289472 students besides yourself, and assuming they should put you above the rest will only end up in disappointment.

21. social media is not all that matters. esp in this day and age, people will definitely be using snapchat and instagram (and hey! tumblr too). but don’t think you need social media to fit in. one of the most popular girls in my school literally made her instagram just the other day. to reiterate: it’s not that deep!!

22. you’re gonna change a lot (which is ok!!). freshman year i only wore hot topic and watched supernatural & doctor who. now, i just watch cooking vids and fawn over shawn mendes. it’s ok to change!! even just though freshman year you’ll change. i know i got like. super gay

23. if you find yourself having free time (or having study hall), do your homework!!! once you get home you’ll probably get distracted/lazy. what i used to do was go to my local library after school and get all my homework done so that i wouldn’t leave my school mindset and not wanna do anything. even if you don’t get everything done, you’ll thank yourself later.

24. there’s a difference between “forming your own opinion” on someone and completely ignoring their reputation/what your friends say. i can’t tell you how many people have gotten burned by the SAME guy in my school because none of them even kept in mind the warnings they had heard about him. it’s ok to give people a chance, but remember that most people’s reputations hold some truth (but not everyone!).

25. this seems pretty obvious but like. be nice. don’t talk mad shit about people you don’t know. rumors fly FAST in high school. what’s even worse is when they’re not true. fact check your shit if you ARE gonna gossip.

26. ok last point (for now). everything is gonna be new. there’s no getting around it. you WILL feel out of place. you’ll most likely be anxious. but everything will end up ok (cheesy, i know). the first week of high school is one the scariest weeks you’ll have in high school. things need time to settle. you’ll make friends, you’ll find things you like, you’ll be happy!! enter high school with a growth mindset. it may not seem like it, but your attitude WILL impact how things turn out.

my suband thoughts pt. 2

(me trying to make this post for the 3rd time now) i realized i wrote like a 10 page dissertation instead and i refuse to post all that so i’m just going to copy over a few and keep the rest in drafts for when i want to reference them later

i will include results and elimination spoilers in this post so if you want to avoid those then don’t read this one...i try to keep things spoiler free but i just. have things to say about the results specific to round 2 :-)

jtbc finally striking down accounts on twitter and instagram for posting suband content....i think tumblr is safe bc this website is dead so i’ll continue posting i guess??? they haven’t done anything to that one youtube that’s been posting all the performance videos too so who knows

should i start with more contestant based random thoughts first

i was scammed by jtbc teaser editor bc they used a clip of jeongho “singing” into the mic in their preview and i waited 2 whole episodes (his team performed last in round 2) for me to find out it was a autotuned mic and a vocoder HELP MEEEE SAKJFDSKF at that point literally i could only laugh

but he plays contrabass? he actually majored in contrabass? or maybe that was his old major, he’s still in school atm since wonsang said they go to the same one but he had educational training on it which is really cool

wait a minute......now that i think about it, that same teaser clip also spoiled the result of yeji winning bc they showed us that she was sitting in the waiting room during eliminations even though they haven’t performed yet (which means we knew her team won AND they already showed us all the matchups before so we also knew who she beat) WHO WAS EDITING THIS LMAO and it wasn’t even a accidental leak like she was sitting in the background, it was literally her reaction as the main focus and everything omg

hwang inkyu hello??? he’s movning’s bassist and he has a combined total of maybe 3 lines of airtime so far i wish he’d speak more bc i was so scared he’d get his ass kicked off the show bc he wouldn’t have been able to make a lasting impression but thank god hwanglin picked him up and seems like he’s going to be moving on with his team in the next round too (good for them the stage was so good i wanted to post it but haven’t yet..)

i used to really like movning’s music but their music direction went into a style i don’t listen to much so i haven’t checked into them recently, tbh i didn’t even know they auditioned until i looked at the full list of contestants later because their stage was cut out and only inkyu made it in

park dawool and hwang hyunjo both have galaxy brains and i would trust them with my life - yea i will not elaborate much because this post is already long even after i shortened it bc i talk too much but hyunjo making entire ppt slides? to present her theories and ideas? yea she’s absolutely ready for everything, for real she’s carrying her teams to victory

leenzy’s 2nd round team was so strong that i thought she got to pick really early (since they showed us all the team formations before airing the actual performances with the behinds for pickings and stuff) but she was actually the 2nd to last pair?? so all that’s left is her > the guy she chose to be her opponent, and then the poor guy that gets to pick from the remaining 6 or so and the final team of the ones unchosen

i was really shocked to find out no one wanted nakyung and ahkyung when i thought they were some of the best :-( i really still can’t tell if the mixing of male and female was a good idea esp since it was so skewed male in the first place ugh in round 2 it seems like the girls are getting shafted???

out of the 6 girls (that can be picked since 3 are frontmen!), 3 of them were not picked up until basically the very end when you don’t really have many choices left...nakyung (guitar), ahkyung (drums), and sujin (vocals)...and they’re all really good?? sujin ended up on the second to last team (basically the last team if we’re being honest since the actual last team is sadly the band of leftovers) and i just don’t understand why they weren’t picked up earlier...i can understand sometimes vocalists can get shafted because the show starts out with a loooot of vocalists so it’s hard to find a place for all of them but guitar? drums? u can definitely pick them...there’s literally only 7 or so drummers to begin with and one has been glued to crackshot the entire time

before the season started i was already terrified that the girls might get shafted because jtbc didn’t want girls auditioning in the first place but it was fine in the first round but now the second round made me think about that again.....it’s worse when they spin the whole “yes!! all girl band!! girl power!!!” when the reality was they weren’t picked up this whole time. annoying.

but this blame has to be shouldered by jtbc bc they wanted to keep it all boys but bc of public reactions (rightfully so) they decided to let female contestants audition but then it turned out that they barely pass any female contestants so it’s still terrible?!! i’ll just write this up that teams are still trying to figure themselves out and work with different people for now....maybe i’m just worried for nothing

not to absolutely curse myself but i think most of my favorites might make it at least to round 4 and i feel like a decent amount will make it to semis so haha /knock on wood but i really hope this stays true...i just need nokdu to continue taking care of hyunsang and make city pop bops together because the judges seem to like that so far

i’m just worried about demian....the judges keep saying he’s improved so much but why do i feel like they will cut him as soon as they need to eliminate more people.....i’m not as worried about round 3 (unless his team falls on their face) but round 4 is where i’m really scared...it’s the last round before the real deal and in season 1 the round 4 eliminations hurt so bad...they cut like 9 people or something

i mean he has his own career as a soloist so he doesn’t need a band like some of the other contestants but i think he really enjoys being in a team with others, honestly i don’t even know if his company would allow for him to be in a side band? even if he were to make it? like mone made it but all their members had solo careers and with the rose and woosung having problems it must be way they just decided to stop after the show unlike the other semis teams purple rain, lucy (they did have a vocalist change since joohyuk stayed with his current band gift), aftermoon (but i guess their dj dropped out i don’t know what happend with dpole??), and of course the winners hoppipolla all continued making music together under the same name

honestly if he makes it past the judges i don’t even know if the public would vote for him, atm his popularity with the public seems nonexistent? lol but to be fair, for most contestants it’s like that, but i do wish he’d become more popular

actually should i be more worried for haeun...she plays classic guitar and usually they don’t like classic leaning instruments but she showed she can sing so i hope she gets to stay

there’s danny too but i think i have given up on him making it until the end, the only way is if he manages to stay on teams that win so he’ll never be up for elimination but i feel like they’re out to get him TT_TT

but i’ve condensed my solid favorites to just demian, yeji, haeun, and jeongho...maybe i’ll pick a 5th eventually but i still like everyone i put in my first post! i really want hyunsang to make it far though bc the vibraphone brings me so much joy so he can be honorary 5th for now

about eliminations though, right now the judges have eliminated less than last season which is odd for jtbc because i feel they keep to their formats almost exactly so now i’m just ?????? if there’s still more people currently....what is going to happen? are they going to make the judges cut more during rounds 3 and 4? or they trying to equalize the semifinals teams since last year some teams had 4 people while others had 5? are they going to do the unthinkable and give us more rounds or semifinal teams? (i wish) anyways kinda scared to see what round 3 eliminations bring now...

the actual eliminations have been mostly as expected for me, still sad but i guess since i sensed it coming it became more a feeling of like “it couldn’t be helped” and also early eliminations hurt less in general because you had less time to get to know the contestants which is why i’d rather they just eliminate now than later if they were going to do it anyways like pls spare me the pain (but this is selfish and contestants probably want to stay as long as possible)

one surprising one was ludi??? he’s a dj but he’s literally done nothing wrong so far i was just wtf??!! when they eliminated him like it felt out of nowhere.....i feel like djs have so much potential on this show because of all the sounds they have access too but i guess the judges aren’t found of edm noise

also demian nation we rise at dawn, when he said “i’m not okay” like- this song really meant a lot to him too i hate thisssss

PLS I JUST WANT HIM TO WIN ONCE SO BADLY but next time, thanks to kfans detective work on the teaser, it looks like junseo (the smol piano child) picked him and jeongho to be on his team (maybe there’s a 4th member too??) and i am putting my faith into that team now pls help my winless boys

the fact that jeongho is winless is almost funny to me because it’s also obvious he’s a judges favorite but i mean that doesn’t translate to wins just i’m pretty sure he’ll make it to the end regardless (like bohoon the vocalist of purple rain lost all 3 /technically all 4/ rounds and still made it), he plays bass and no bassist has ever been eliminated on the show yet so cheers to that

round 4 was special since they switched over to a number format and no band versus band i don’t remember if the team with the top points were immune to elimination or not (or maybe just an unwritten rule bc why the heck would you do that to them after giving them the best score) but the rest of the teams were fair game - which is exactly why this elimination round is the scariest and not good for my heart especially after i had spent weeks watching them sing and have fun..........

ok now to complain about the judges AGAIN: why are the judges thoughts on what they want in a band so damn similar anyway?

i mentioned this in my first post already about how i dislike the judging atmosphere

but now i actually see it...in the numbers...like s1 there was a bit more taste diversity within the judges but now i feel like i’m seeing a lot of 4:1 or 5:0 scores so i went to see the breakdown out of the 15 stages we had so far

5:0 score - 6

4:1 score - 7

3:2 score - 2

compared to s1 (out of 14 only because they edited out one pair of battles completely so we never knew their score...)

5:0 score - 2

4:1 score - 6

3:2 score - 6

looking at that...it makes me feel sad....especially in the early 2 rounds it must be demoralizing to keep getting met with 5:0 loss and to be very honest and in s1 the number of 5:0 did increase in round 3 but that was when more teams started to figure themselves out so it makes sense that some would start pulling ahead

i’m really tired of listening to the judges agreeing with each other all the time, it makes it seem like the vision they have for the band was already set from day 1 unlike in s1 where everyone went in with no expectations because it was a brand new program, zero expectations, zero fans, just some kids wanting to make music and that’s what it should be like....music shouldn’t be limiting like this, the judges seem a little closed minded and now i’m 100% sure they have certain band styles in mind (i don’t know if it’s the judges only or if it’s jtbc producers too that’s causing this)

and i see other ifans saying this exact same thing on twitter now too so it’s not just me that picked up on this so safe to say we can’t all be extremely sensitive right

like the contradictory comments -

dongheon’s 2nd round team was told their original song was great and lovely but they brought nothing new to the table and that it was too standard, “just like any other rock/rock ballad song” when i thought the leenzy’s team (the one they went up against) also had a pretty standard? pop rock song? absolutely nothing wrong with it either, even the judges said that the song was not complicated at all but complimented them on their “band feel” so i guess as long as they enjoyed the vibe of the team and it suited the type of band style they have in mind it’s suddenly fine to make a simple song

i’m not saying her song was worse than his (i enjoyed both and seeing original songs performed make me very happy), i’m just a little confused at the judges comments for them both especially when one performed after the other, you really don’t see the bias in your words?

dawool was told his song composition in the first stage was a little too...nuanced(?) and that they wish he could just keep thing simpler even though he thought he toned down already and kept things simple, so round 2 he decided to just work with someone that makes mainstream music (davii) to fulfil what the judges want

seulong’s 2nd round team decided to go heavier on the instrumental side because they figured they didn’t want to go head to head with one of the favorite vocalists of the show (sorry yeji, ur my queen but ur also the judges’ queen too :---( ) but got criticized for a similar reason...yoo heeyeol saying that their composition was “fun for the brain” but if he were thinking about the general public he doesn’t think they would like this type of music, literally saying that the general public do not have the music knowledge or brain capacity to understand all the skill based playing going on musically and so won’t enjoy it because it wouldn’t appeal to their hearts................(ok sure call us dumb it’s true but won’t appeal to our hearts? music can sound intricate and fun? we can enjoy some funky strings guitar riffs without actually knowing all the details ya know)

they also kept telling them (seulong’s team) “oh i loved this” “i wish there was a band like this” “very cool” and gave them no votes??? if you wish a band like this exist then why? would? you? not? vote? for them??? like i can’t tell if those were consolation comments or what

man judges rant ended up being long asf and i’m usually not affected by them and what they say but i was already feeling an odd vibe from the beginning and now seeing 5:0 after 5:0 after 5:0 really did it for me

overall, a not very fun post to read through it’s just more ranting than anything....i’m dying for a big pop off performance so i can successfully gauge the public opinion so far but i’ll refrain from posting my guess until at least the end of round 3, also i believe the team vibe usually outweighs solo popularity but we don’t know any teams yet (at least i can’t guess anyone yet like i could in s1) so we will still have to see!!

wildfire preparation—air quality edition

i'm writing this as of july 2021 which means it is wildfire season for us who live in the dry parts of the northern hemisphere, especially the western united states.

why the u.s. west especially? i'll tell you: diverse microclimates fill the region; climate change leading to wet winters where the diverse fauna grows at an enormous rate and then heatwave, drought ridden summers that kill the expansive growth; and dense populations are the main culprits. Dense populations = more buildings to burn down, more vehicles on the road, more harmful human activity. because let's face it. fires aren't always started by lighting storms. often it's faulty utility infrastructure. or the heat from vehicles setting dry grass on fire. embers from a bbq/cigarette/camp fire. sometimes it's a person throwing sparks from hammering steel on steel (or iron) while working on their ranch.

anyways.

as someone who lives in the western u.s. and works in air quality, i've got some info i'd love to share with you. i truly hope it helps. the summer months of choking on smoke can leave one feeling helpless and bleak. i'm hoping you can feel less helpless.

SHIT TO GET BEFORE A FIRE/FIRE SEASON

n95 masks

MERV-rated filters for your HVAC (heating, venting, air conditioning central unit; you know you have central air con if you've got the big compressor outside/on your roof that has the big fan that throws up air when the AC comes on) system if you have one (check your intake flow to see what rating your system can handle. most new HVACs can handle MERV 16. Anything 13 and above will trap smoke particles)

humidifier and/or kettle depending on what you've got already and what you're willing to spend. get both if you can and don't already have them

an air purifier if you don't have HVAC and can spare the money. ikea's advertising an air purifier for a good price but i have no idea how the quality is. you would probably need to get a few of them and designate flow rate exchange zones (one per room, open concept floor plans would be one per zone function such as where you eat, where you relax, where you sleep)

a mop/wet mop if you don't already have one

some house plants. seriously. don't reference that 1989 nasa study on plants and indoor pollution, it is laughably outdated. just pick plants that you can keep alive and have as much surface area on the plant leaves as you can get. we're not trying to produce oxygen, we want the plants to catch the small, harmful particulates on their leaves and break them down into their basic states in the plant's soil

non-perishable food that doesn't need cooked

optional items include battery powered headlamps in case power goes out, battery banks for phones. i'm recommending battery powered lights in case power goes out and not candles because let's be self-aware. don't create a fire hazard in your home when the power went out due to fire.

WILDFIRE PREP

have a backpack ready to go in case your area gets hit with an evacuation order!

for you backpack you'll need:

original, notarized documents and IDs (birth certificates, civil licenses, housing agreements, passports)

copies of original documents instead if you happen to have a fireproof safe to keep said documents

phone and charger

family heirlooms you'd be devastated to lose (photo albums, jewelry, keepsakes)

a change of clothes if you've got room (socks, underwear, and a fresh shirt can go a long ways)

non-perishable snacks

a filled water bottle

cash (wildfires can threaten electric grids making electronic banking useless)

if you own a vehicle, try to keep as much fuel in the tank as possible in case your area gets evacuated. traffic conditions during an evacuation tend to be majorly congested and you do not want to sit in that with little fuel

check the perimeter of where you live for anything that could catch fire from embers that travel from neighboring fires. remove those dead plants, place seasoning/seasoned firewood further away from you residence. landscaping and drought can make for a catch-22: you need to conserve water but dry plants lead to fuel for fires. go with your gut and common sense as much as your scenario allows.

water your house plants

you may lose power during a wildfire event. fill water bottles, have non-perishable food stocked.

for wildfire season, i just live out of this aforementioned backpack. if i go places and need my phone, wallet, etc then i transfer those things to my pockets and then put them back in my wildfire pack when i get home. this pack becomes your forever home for these items during this time. if a wildfire is somewhat close to my area, then i travel with my pack just in case. a friend of mine had his home burn down while he was out playing tennis. all he had left were the clothes on his back and the five dollars in his pockets.

THINGS TO DO WHILE AN ACTIVE FIRE DECREASES YOUR AIR QUALITY

check your air quality

you can check AQ by sticking your head out your door. haze and smell are the best indicators tbh. if outside looks hazy and smells of smoke, close up everything and stay inside

you can also check AQI (air quality index) at sites like AirNow, PurpleAir, World's Air Pollution

check wind speed and direction

checking wind can tell you if you're going to be hit with smoke, or if you are hit with smoke but there's no fire in your area, you can find out if the wind may be carrying the smoke into your location

i use this wind map and windy.com for my area

run your air purifier and/or HVAC

put in that MERV-13 or above rated filter for your HVAC system and lower the temp for your AC so it comes on (thermostat is usually set to "auto"). your AC is cooling and filtering air already in your residence instead of drawing air from the outside

DO NOT TURN THE FAN TO "ON"

THAT WILL DRAW OUTSIDE AIR

give your AC a break after an hour

air purifiers can run nonstop, don't turn those off

when your air con is off, do the following

fill your humidifier and/or stovetop kettle with water and run them. also turn on the shower/faucets if you're keen. when the smoke in my house is at its worst, i run everything that i can. with the drought so bad this year, i won't be able to be so cavalier with my water :/

ANYWAYS increase the humidity level in your place ASAP

the moisture in the air bonds with the smoke particles and enlarges them. they become heavy and fall to the floor.

DON'T VACCUUM THAT WILL DESSICATE AND RESUSPEND THE PARTICLES

YOU WORKED SO HARD TO MAKE THEM HEAVY AND FALL OUT OF THE BREATHING ZONE

this is where the wet mop comes in

you've humidified the shit out of your home, now mop your floor

don't dry mop

you gotta wet mop

and just use water

resist the urge to also clean other stuff

you do not need to be cleaning with like bleach and stuff when your windows and doors are shut tight. protect your indoor air quality!

now you're done for a bit, give yourself a break

rinse and repeat with AC/humidity/wet mopping

if you go outside, wear an n95 mask ALWAYS

try not to go outside bc that lets in pollutants and n95 masks are kinda one and done type of deal. you'll see a grayness seep into the inside of the mask when you've worn them too long

your clothes also trap particulates, entering the home with you. try to have a place to dump your clothes without polluting the rest of your residence (an entryway, garage, side door)

check on your plants and loved ones

read/write/play games as you wait out the smoke. escape to clean air if you're able to

this is not conclusive and is based on a mix of empirical, anecdotal, and well researched studies. please be safe and stay healthy. i may add/edit this post to better serve this information.

Unit Comps: Terran; Marine-Tank-Medivac (vs Zerg, Ling-Bane-Muta specifically)

Remember: This is my journal, so some things may be wrong. I write things down, and I will add edits as I test them out on the ladder. But these are based off pretty good observations, and concrete facts.

The good old Wings of Liberty classic, and a style that I am very used to. And also a style that I absolutely suck at microing, at least against Zerg, which will be the first part of the post (I’ll write the TvT and the TvP parts later).

So the first question - why Marine-Tank-Medivac? Everything we do has to be for a reason. If there is no reason to go MTM, then we shouldn’t...”standard” (not so much anymore, but back then it was) is no reason. I think MTM is still quite viable, though Bio-mine does slightly better.

Well, tanks are TERRIFYING on the ground if they can get set up. They lock down an entire area, and pretty much label it off limits, and if you set up correctly, the position is very, very hard to break. If you push your tank line up far enough, you force the opponent to act (you may be sieging an expansion or something), and usually the act of doing so means you’re in a favorable position, so you already have an advantage over the opponent in that engagement.

The drawback to tanks however, is that they’re very immobile, and that they can’t shoot up. Also they can’t shoot stuff right in front of them. So that’s why we get marines and medivacs. Medivacs allow us to be mobile (kind of, at least with drops...), and with enough, we can even doom drop. They also heal our marines, so that’s chill. Marines are just generally good against everything, and do a shit ton of DPS with 3/3. They also give us high ground sighting.

ADVANTAGES OF MARINE/TANK:

-DPS DPS DPS DPS DPS against just about everything. Marine/tank kills stuff SO fast that it’s ridiculous. -Depending on the map, can lock down certain areas (if we advance up to them), and can split opponents in half -When you’re set up, the clock is in your hands (you put a timer on the opponent to attack) -Very, very, very, very cost efficient - allows you to pool gas for late game units, such as Ravens, BCs, Ghosts, etc. -Scales exponentially with position -Easy to set up (build wise)

DISADVANTAGES OF MARINE/TANK:

-Not terribly mobile -Somewhat micro-intensive -DEAD if unsieged vs banelings -Marines die to banelings -If your marines aren’t in the right place, BAM DEADED -Mutas will fly in and murder your tanks -Most of your army needs to stay together - you can split some of it off, but it’s an I-need-most-of-my-army-for-the-big-fight type army -Infestors will FUCK up marines (like Scott did me on Palodino) -Splash damage is hard to deal with -Weak in the late game vs things like ultras, Brood Lords, and infestors

Now let’s get matchup specific!

VS LING/BANE/MUTA [referred to LBM thereafter] (with accessory units)

The canonical TvZ in Wings of Liberty...I figured I’d elaborate on it since I do like to go Marine/Tank still.

Let’s also talk about what Marine-Tank-Medivac is really, really good at (with maybe liberators, and/or widow mines, but that will depend on economy...and is kind of redundant, I’d rather have more tanks, but the liberators for sure).

So the best part in MTM vs LBM is that the primary DPS for Zerg, the banelings/lings, are melee units, and that we have ranged units. Therefore, in order to reduce damage to oneself, Zergs will necessarily have to make one large charge in, otherwise they are being inefficient. Mutas also have to get kind of up close and personal in order to kill anything (at a whopping 3 range). Marines have 5 range! (In Brood War, we had a +1 range upgrade too LOL).

So Mutalisks necessarily take damage whenever they want to attack marines. Now they also regenerate health, but yeah...first of all, everyone knows to focus down mutalisks, but I’ll just restate it for the sake of being thorough.

So from the obvious observation that Zerg’s units are melee (or short ranged), and that our units are longer ranged, we can then conclude that we can split the battle into two phases: when we are shooting them (and they are not shooting us), and when they have successfully engaged us.

The first obvious deduction is that we must prolong the ranged phase as much as possible. Any terrain, technique, or strategy we can do that aids in this will significantly help our fight. I’m going to list a few things that help tremendously:

A cliff of any sort where the ramps leading up to it are on the side

“Holes” in the map where the lings have to run around, but our tanks can shoot the whole time

Any terrain where the travel distance is longer than the straight-line shooting distance

Stutter stepping marines backward - the Zerglings have to run for a few frames to catch up to the Marines, while stationary marines can continue shooting

Any position where we can shoot them and they cannot run up to us/it’s hard to run up to us

Defensively, buildings to force banelings to break the wall, or for lings to have to break it down or something idk

Splitting up our marines into tiny chunks that travel backwards (but not too spread out linearly - kind of like a soda can is the ideal shape I think), since the ones in the back can protect the ones in the front, and this “elongates the distance” to the marines in the rear

The same can be done with our tank line

So we want to engage Zerg in positions where they have to take any sort of curve, that will optimize our engagement.

Now let’s talk about the second phase of the engagement: when they’re all up on our grill, and we’re trying not to die. Let’s talk about why things suck when they’re all up on our grill:

We’re taking actual damage from lings

Banelings are no fun vs marines if they’re clumped up...or in general.

Tanks are useless when shit gets up close

Splash damage is no fun when tanks are shooting lings near Marines

Mutas do a shit ton of damage, especially to our tankusss

So the idea is that we want as many marines to be shooting at any given moment, and for our guys to “be as far away from the ling-bane” as possible. We want as few of our units to be under attack by Zerg units.

Zerg maximizes their attack by surrounding our units. The reason being that they have more surface area. The more spread out our units are, the more surface area Zerglings have to kill us - but the more clumped our units are, the stronger Baneling hits are.

The answer to this is the classic stutter step that Terrans do backwards - this is good (and I have to elaborate why, so we can perhaps come up with other methods to optimize MTM vs LBM). I think splitting our guys into moderately sized clumps, and stutter stepping them back (preferably into a concave) is a good idea. ONLY STUTTER STEP UNITS THAT ARE BEING HIT BY ZERGLINGS.

AVOID THE SURROUND AT ALL COSTS. Some Zergs will split their armies up and attack from 2 angles, that is very smart of them - so we should deter this by choosing map positions that are not favorable for this, or seeing that they’re spread out and using their out-of-positionness to gain favorable position (more on this later).

Ideally, we’re slightly in front of our tanks (with a few marines behind to protect the tanks), and split into a few clumps - and we stutter step back the ones being hit. The tanks should target down the banelings, or anything that’s not the front line. We occasionally split as needed (depending on how close the banelings get) We’ll just tank muta hits until the ling/bane is mostly dead.

Things that help:

NOT being on creep - this gives our guys “more time not being hit” by lings, since they run slower and stimmed marines are pretty fast

Having space to micro - beginning the engagement from a thin ramp and having it expand

Positions where it is very difficult for Zerg to get a surround (for example, if there was a very long corridor, and you’re sieging a third, it wouldn’t make sense for the Zerg to run all the way to the other side just to engage you - though they might, and you just push a lot more aggressively knowing that half of their army is out of position, and leave a few dudes in the back)

Blocking potential ling paths for surrounds with dudes that also stutter step back

Focus firing banelings because we don’t like those things

High mouse speed/accuracy

A THOR because that just makes it so hard for the mutas to engage

Hotkeying units so that you can rapidly switch between stutter stepping/focus firing

I’ll go into map specific examples, I’m going to sleep, but a few positions where MTM is particularly strong vs LBM:

Newkirk Precinct, outside of the low ground third 3rd next to the main (with the high ground platform next to it). Why this is good: If you siege a few tanks somewhat near the edge, and then a few more along the ridge towards your base, and you have most of your marines near the ramp/at the bottom, this is good. Why?

Tanks can shoot the third

Because the tanks are somewhat on the ledge and not near the ramp, it’s a longer travel distance

Narrow path to wide path (choke that is the ramp)

If Zerg goes for a surround, it’s quite a long path to get around - and the tanks in the back can shoot everything, same with the marines on the high ground

If Zerg does actually bust up the ramp, you can split backwards, since you have a lot of space behind you, and it’s unlikely the Zerg will have units there

Sure, mutas might ruin our day by sniping tanks - just keep a thor/marines near.

Defending from your own high ground platform is really good too...

Bel’shir Vestige, oh god, where to begin? So many good spots.

ACCESSORY PLAYS WITH MARINE/TANK/MEDIVAC VS LING/BANE/MUTA

So now, onto maximizing effectiveness with the Marine/Tank/Medivac - everything I’ve talked about so far has been just about the direct engagement; we will now talk about uses of the units in ways that aren’t just the direct engagement, as well as other cute uses for the features of our core composition.

So the first big thing is drops. Why do we drop? Once again, there has to be a reason for us to do something, otherwise there’s no reason for us to do it. Drops are useful because they allow units to get to a position they otherwise would be unable to, but not so much that, drops shorten the distance we have to travel from point to point in comparison to what our opponents have to travel.

A good instance of this is the third outside the main on Newkirk Precinct. (LOL I love that map so much simply because of that spot is just so strong) Many maps in the current pool actually have that very easily abusable cliff between the third and the main.

What a drop needs to work is a safe path to its destination, as well as the rest of the army being somewhere else. This can happen a few ways; you 1) see that mutas are nowhere near the drop, so you go for it, 2) you see them mutas somewhere else, 3) your drop beings near your army, 4) you see their entire army somewhere else, etc. AS LONG AS YOU HAVE THOSE TWO THINGS. The drop doesn’t even have to work - you can use it to bait their army elsewhere.

Another thing that the load/unload function is really useful for on the medivacs are to pick up Marines that maybe look like they’re about to be outrun, picking them up, boosting back, and then dropping them off. The only disadvantage is that you can only drop one unit at a time, so this will sacrifice DPS slightly, but is something to experiment with, especially if we’ve gotten surrounded.

Medivacs on cliffs are super annoying too - siege some tanks under a cliff, drop some marines above it (leave some marines on the low ground too to protect the tanks from mutas), and dart forward, fire some shots, stutter step back, and then load everything up. You get SO much free damage this way, which can usually bait out a bad engage from Zerg. This was a very popular tactic back on the old WoL map Metalopolis, particularly in close-by-air spawn.

A good use for this would be say would be the natural mineral line on abyssal reef...drop some tanks far away and just have some marines poke at the hatch. It looks like it would be the most freaking obnoxious thing ever.

Doom drops are indeed an option...but I always feel really iffy about doom drops with MTM vs LBM, since you might as well just hit the front. Since MTM is so much about positional control, and since doom drops are usually at a location where many central tech structures are located (aka off of the usual push path), then I don’t really see a point for it. It contradicts the point of MTM. (The situation is different, however, in TvT when both players have tanks, and I’ll discuss that in a later post) In short, I don’t see why you’d doom drop as opposed to just going hamburgers and pushing someone to their front.
