ok yeah shes done. this is Annie, shes the daughter of Racheal and Gaster. idk if its like common knowledge (nobody really interacts w/ my ocs ;/) but Racheal was with beetlejuice for a while. thats how we got my girl Haily. but they aren’t together anymore. i missed her just like, for about everything? (her job, hanging out w/ her, ect) plus at this point I’d dropped outta my beetlejuice thing anyway. so they broke it off.
seeing as Racheal is a total mom now, shes older and she can’t really play y/n for characters like conner murphy or the tmnt crew like she used to, so I’ve been pairing her with older characters like Stan and Ford, Gaster, a couple others (ofc theres still also characters like Sans, Bill, a few others im sure, shes only in her mid 20s.)
another thing, we’ve (and i mean I’ve) been thinkin about it for a while. came to the decision that if I wait for rache to only get kids w/ characters shes actually with she’ll only ever have haily and only kids are boring to write. so, I’ve made another one, idk how her relationship with Dings is, but we’ll figure it out lmao. uhhhhh some stuff abt her that i’ve figured it out so far
+baby is crazy tall!!! she was as tell as haily at only like half her age, and now shes got a couple inches over her. haily is forever mad about it. ((also ik its kinda weird for her to already be only a year younger than haily but its find ages are weird with these guys anyways asdfghjk)
+her eyes are sensitive to light, which is why shes pretty much always wearing sunglasses, but she does have crazy good night vision lol.
+shes got skele hands as a refrence to a webcomic Starbotdubs did a dub of forever ago called “Girl with a Skeleton Hand” plus I like the idea that she likes wearing braclets and fingerless gloves and cute stuff like that. she can never find rings small enough tho,, ;/
+if u dont know haily goes to camp campbell in the summers, uhm, she goes too! everyones confused on why shes so tall and always wears gloves and sunglasses, and why shes never come to camp before. they tell ‘im its family stuff.

what would you say was the “golden age” of the spn fandom ? (pre november 5 ofc). i’ve noticed that so much of the top kudo’d fic and art is from around 2013-14. and like... what was in the water back then. i wasn’t engaged with spn back then, so i’m just curious
yeah I would say that sounds about right for golden age, I think that would put it directly on top of the 27% audience bump at season 9, which is completely unheard of. as for what was happening and why it was all so. weird. I mean you have to take that era in the context of just fandom generally at that time. superwholock avengers anglophile potterheads it was all very. well. like just scroll through heritageposts. big era for fandom as simulated ethnicity, normal-is-just-a-setting-on-my-washing-machine. 2010s are when fandom went mainstream babey !! ship wars calling characters “sinnamon roll” unironically mishapocalypse the rise of introvert culture like it was all. you had to be there but you also had to have the right relationship to the content to think any of it was fun.

tagged by @kitthefox thank u frendo
1. Why did you choose your URL? All I remember is that it's a stupid pun based on a line from Twelfth Night. I don't remember why or when I chose it.
2. Any side blogs? No active ones, I have a couple from years ago but all my nonsense is here and you all have to look at it. Sometimes I feel like I should maybe set aside a space for all the goth dads but then I remember that a lot of you are actually here for that, so.
3. How long have you been on tumblr? IDK like ten years? A long fuckin' time anyway. God, I'm so old.
4. Do you have a queue tag? Bold of you to assume I ever even use a queue or put any kind of administrative effort into using tumblr
5. Why did you start your blog in the first place? No idea. Genuinely. I think I just found out various artists and writers I liked were here and signed up so I could see all their stuff in one place.
6. Why did you choose your icon? It me
7. Why did you choose your header? Because I'm a sad goth who reads too much Terry Pratchett and gets emotional about flowers
8. What's your post with the most notes? I think it's "Sam Vimes arrests the One Ring for being an accessory to murder" which is both the best and worst joke I've ever made on this website. All my most successful posts here are either fantasy-genre shitposts or me roasting myself for being the world's cringiest goth.
9. How many mutuals do you have? I... don't know? They're a pretty rad bunch though.
10. How many followers do you have? I do not know and do not care. I've made a conscious decision to ignore it because I don't want to make myself anxious about changes to that number that probably don't mean anything negative about me but could easily be interpreted as 'oh no everyone hates me'.
11. How many people do you follow? Probably about 300, though quite a lot are no longer active and I'm just too lazy to have a clear out.
12. Have you ever made a shitpost? IT'S ALL SHITPOSTS HERE BABEY
13. How often do you use tumblr each day? I check my notifications during the day in breaks etc but I usually only turn up properly in the evening. I've got shit to do. I wish I didn't, but such is adulthood, unfortunately.
14. Have you ever had a fight/argument with another blog. Who won? I don't think so? The occasional misunderstanding or attempt to goad me into saying something terrible, sure, but that's about it. One time someone tried to start a fight with me because my favourite story about Lord Byron was too mainstream but that was extremely funny. I'd like to apologise to that person for turning them into my 'haha internet drama' story but... I won't, because they were extraordinarily rude over basically nothing.
15. How do you feel about 'you need to reblog this' posts? I scroll right past and sleep easy at night knowing that I'm not spreading unnecessary guilt-tripping :)
16. Do you like tag games? Yes! Sometimes I forget if I get tagged overnight/while I'm at work though so please don't ever be offended if you tag me and I never do the thing. I just have too many things and not enough brain cells.
17. Do you like ask games? Yes, the sillier the better.
18. Which of your mutuals do you think is tumblr famous? I honestly have no idea. It's not that I don't care, I just don't understand the anything.
19. Do you have a crush on a mutual? I'm ace and demiromantic so... no. Don't take it personally, you're all lovely, it's just that you're all real and human and I could literally count all the real-life crushes I've ever had on one hand, including the guy who lives in my house.
20. Tags? uhhhh idk @jesterhorhay @roller-rink-haruno I know you guys like quizzes and games and such... and anyone else who's not tagged yet and wants to have a go

gdi batman doesn’t kill for a Reason: a character study
first let’s get this one out of the way: in canon batman is and likely will always be presented as a wealthy, white man of privilege and he Specifically should not have unilateral license to kill due to that. because well... COME ON!! if i have to explain this one, This Post Is Not For You
now, batman’s reasons for not killing are not because “killing would make him as bad as the rogues uwu” and if that’s your interpretation then i am sorry on behalf of recent bad comics and adaptations that have so diluted batman’s character to be closer to a sick, man-child perversion than an actual superhero with all the grey morality and social responsibity that truly implies
as a character, batman is first and foremost a detective who actively works with the only non-corruptable “good cop” he cound find in a city that is so historically corrupt and disenfranchised that at one point after an earthquake decimated gotham, the national government basically threw up its hands, shrugged, and abandoned gotham’s survivors to anarchy. batman is a symbol to the people of gotham for hope and protection against all manner of evils - not only from the criminal underbelly but from the corruption that mutated gotham’s systems of power from woefully incompetent to actively harmful to its citizenry. batman is a traumatized man who was once a happy child who watched his parents murdered in front of him and decided never again. batman is a father who realized if he ever used his role as batman to take a life, he would be sanctioning his children to do the same in his name
the batman character is a lot of things. but batman is not, should not, and cannot be judge, jury, and executioner. to paint him as a brutalizer that goes mad with power when presented with low-level criminals is disingenuous at best and actively harmful to the batman symbology of heroism at worst. even to say that batman should kill only in extreme cases like joker, who is undeniably a horrible piece of non-human excrement whose death would actually be a net good for all of dc in-universe society, it would be completely against who batman is as a character to have him break his morals like that. batman, bruce wayne, is a man who tries to use every tool at his disposal to bring about justice and prevent death: using his company to hire the disenfranchised in gotham including ex-cons, single-handedly funding gotham’s charities, and ofc using batman to find evidence to bring down powerful crime bosses and corrupt politicians alongside the rogues gallery. batman is one man whose symbol and legacy is larger than he is, but who is still only One Man
batman doesn’t kill not because he’s too good for it. he doesn’t kill because he’s too SMALL for it! bruce inherently values human life to the point where he believes one man cannot decide whether another human being lives or dies. that’s his whole stance when bruce inevitably butts heads with members of his own family who don’t subscribe to his point of view!
and yeah there’s always room in the Disk Horse to talk about whether or not batman is doing enough or if his morality is too simple and he actually should, logistically speaking, “cross the line.” those conversations are welcome in the context of all batman mythology: if batman and his universe existed, would bruce wayne’s batman be the form he should take? tbh idk and i am not here for thought experiments of what form superheroism would take in “real world” scenarios. there’s plenty of other fiction and media that have tackled that question, with results ranging from absolute fascist-glorification garbage to genuinely good works that challenge consumers’ preconceived notions of what a “superhero” would truly look like (watchmen, the ultimate batman au fanfic, is a great example)
the character of batman in-universe serves as a hard moral compass example to his family and other heroes not because it’s simple and easy - but because it’s HARD to believe human life is inherently valuable in the face of all the atrocities and horrors bruce has seen humans do to one another. and the question of whether or not the human monsters batman faces are worthy of their lives is straight up not one bruce wayne contends with. bruce has made his position clear and he is steadfast. but those types of questions are valuable anyway, and though we know batman’s answer, it’s metatextually important batman is challenged for his morality. in the batman mythos, jason todd is the clearest example of a character type that confronts those life-death questions, chooses differently, and that batman and we the readers have to decide who to agree with
at this point the batman “no killing” morality is a whole arechetype in and of itself. the batman archetype of heroism and vigilantism has inspired or informed the interpretation of most if not all other vigilante-like heroes that have been created since the early 20th century. so in a lot of ways batman has the simple rule of “no killing” because we as consumers don’t want a hero who kills. we live in a reality where innocent people are murdered by the powers that be, where cops murder civilians in cold blood, and call those crimes deserved and just. so we build fiction where that “reality,” that fun-house mirror of absolute power, is cleansed and where an individual has that same power of impunity and deliberately chooses not to use it. heroism in comics is an idealized version of what we wish existed in our own society: somebody with the actual power and ability to make a difference for the greater good without moral bankruptcy. it’s easy when you put it like that. batman exists in the vacuum of fiction, so the decisions he makes as a character do not have to be as complicated as real life. and the dc mythos is rich enough that batman is actively challenged on his stances by others even within his own family and honestly he should be! as a character batman has to be given the option to change his mind, and as a literary device readers have to be reminded of the moral choice at stake. It’s Good Writing Babey!! tho admittedly it’s this aspect that is most actively (and probably rightfully) criticized BECAUSE batman never changes his mind. and for a character with mythology that is over 80 years old - that’s a long time for the cultural and moral zeitgeist of superheroes to remain unchanged, especially considering the “no killing” rule has become a hard rule for all mainstream superheroes
tbh the assumption that batman, bruce wayne, does not kill because then he would essentially be the same as his villains gallery, morally-speaking - it doesn’t hold that much water. do you have ANY idea how much canon bruce wayne suffers from self-hatred and constantly questions his own actions?? even the batmans of bad storylines where he’s a grimdark, I Work Alone caricature, batman is a master of self deprication and loathing. he’s a man of few words and hard lines, but he is as likely to think of himself as morally equal to, say, deathstroke (in the sense they are both powerful, capable men who live and die by their choices) than superman. bruce does not believe he has the moral high ground, ever. batman believes he cannot make the choice to kill, so he doesn’t. simple as that
tldr batman doesn’t kill because killing is bad. it’s not that deep

For the headcanon thing- Steve is sweet and kind and protective with you around friends, but inside the bed room, he's totally different! He's also always wanted to play and insturment, but is too embarressed to show you because he think's he won't be any good. For Robin, she's got a really good sense of music and book style, but always hides the fact that she tries to be different and doesn't want anyone to know she listens to ABBA and has read The Princess Bride like 10 times!
(snaps fingers) Will I like the way you think
Steve in the bedroom:
Steve likes to put on a facade out in public
around your friends, he’s protective, an arm draped over you
he’s always nice and sweet, getting doors and carrying your things, despite your insistence that you do, in fact, have muscles in your arms
always coming to your aid and telling your friends to knock it off if they rag on you a little too hard - he’s good at being there for you
in the bedroom, Steve goes hard
like. metaphorically and literally
he usually starts out very slow and full of compliments
giggling galore babey
but once he starts, he really gets into it
he’s very good at dirty talk, as it’s his words that helped him with the ladies in the first place
you could be laughing one second and then moaning loudly the next
always likes to tell you how pretty you are for him, how good you are
and afterwards he would hold you close and kiss your temple, telling you how much he loves you
Steve x Instrument - a Concept
Steve has always wanted to play guitar
and seeing Marty McFly rock the fuck out at the end of Back to the Future when he was high off his ass only solidified this dream
but he was always full of doubt because he didn’t think he was good at anything
and one night while ranting to you, he just lets it slip
“and I wish I could play guitar, I wish I could write songs and I wish I could prove to you and to everyone that I’ve got a chance in me”
and you’re like. girl why aren’t you taking lessons then
and he pauses and realizes he really is just assuming that he’s automatically not going to be good at it
but you remind him that he’s good at a whole lot of things AND he’s great with his fingers, too, so he’s certainly well qualified
and after that he uses his paychecks to save up for a blue electric guitar that sits in the local music store’s window
the first time he holds it in his hands as his, he feels like he is holding the sword of Excalibur
it’s like heaven’s light is shining on him nahimsayin
he takes lessons twice a week because he’s just so excited
and, as expected, he’s very good at it
he does a local battle of the bands and he’s so nervous beforehand, literally shaking and sweating and his eyes dart everywhere in anxiety
and you remind him that he has literally beat the shit out of inter-dimensional monsters before - this is a fucking cake walk honey
and he gets up on stage and he just fuckin. he loses it
starts out very modestly but gets to his solo and he goes Apeshit, capital A
he starts to dance and spin and kick and shred and the audience goes Feral
when he comes off stage panting you wrap him in a huge hug and give him a kiss
“my little rockstar”
“uh, who gave you permission to kiss the rockstar?”
“shut the fuck up Steve”
Robin Is A Normie And She Hates It
you knew Robin was hiding some of her interests from you
because she owned 70 tapes and only let you listen to ten
you’ve also definitely seen her throw books under her bed when you come over
but one day you’ve simply had enough of the shenanigans and you reach under her bed as she jumps on your back to try to stop you
you pull out a VERY worn copy of the Princess Bride
you stare at her, mouth agape, and she groans
“Robin, I didn’t know you liked the mainstream stuff”
“shut up”
you go to her tape collection and actually look through it, gasping as you pull out ABBA and Toto
You hold them up, asking for an explanation with a look
“I like ABBA, okay? And I like ‘Africa’. alright?”
“and the book?”
“it’s a cute story!”
you tsk. “I didn’t know you were a normie, Robin”
and after that you torment her for not having super different tastes
i.e you choreograph a night in with Steve where you both sing ABBA at the top of your lungs until Robin joins in, using the remote as a microphone
and you melt inside, heart fluttering, because she sounds like an angel when she sings, even if it’s ABBA
and you assure her that you love her even if she likes what everyone else does, which makes her roll her eyes, but she kisses you nonetheless

hoo boy, okay, this is a baaaaad idea and it’s LONG but I’m doing it anyway because I’m genuinely struggling with this, I don’t have an IRL community to turn to, and I want to hear what other lesbians/wlw think about this beyond my own tiny circle. (for the record I’m not a discourse blog, so pleeeease be gentle and don’t drag me into any super messy debates? the most I want to do is get opinions from different people and learn enough to come to my own private conclusions and move on)
I’m a bby lesbian (and a long-time ace) and the “bi-lesbian” thing upsets me too. but I’ve seen an argument brought up that made me stop and think, and I’m kinda stumped about it. the argument is that we're ALREADY using lesbian as an umbrella term, but only get upset about it when bi women do the same.
for example...when we see a wlw couple walking down the street or getting married, or two women kissing in a TV show or pictures shown on twitter (much like the cute “sword lesbians” story that’s been circulating), MOST of the time, everyone (including us!) tends to automatically call them “lesbians” or a "lesbian couple” or a “lesbian wedding”, etc...without thinking about what their actual orientations are.
I saw another person bring up an experience where her lesbian gf would joke about them "doing lesbianism babey!" but when she tried to do the same as a bi woman, her gf would get mad at her and say she couldn't do that. the main point of all of this is that there's hypocrisy in play - when lesbians put the "lesbian" label on other women, whether irl or fiction, most people don’t kick up a fuss. but when bi women use the label themselves, suddenly it's bad and lesbophobic/biphobic.
this troubles me because I DO see it happen all the time, both online and in the few irl experiences I’ve had. and I think it's a valid point to make (especially because "sapphic" is barely used irl at all). it feels unfair to use "lesbian" with the same-ish looseness we use "gay", and then draw the line at bi women using it too. (there’s also a very real problem of bi ppl with same-gender partners turning to “Gay And Lesbian” spaces cos they have nowhere else to turn, and getting kicked out for not being a “real gay”. there are tangible real-life layers to this discourse that I don’t want to brush off.)
but at the same time, "lesbian" is the only modern word we have (particularly our only mainstream word) to describe our full, unique experience as women who are exclusively attracted to other women/women-aligned people. bi women already have “bisexual” as their recognizable mainstream term, and they also have “queer”, “wlw”, “sapphic”, etc as further options to fine-tune their identity...so it feels just as unfair to use "lesbian” too, and that’s the main reason why the term “bi-lesbian” personally upsets me right now.
it’s also upsetting because “bi-lesbian” implies that some lesbians could still be open to men, and we already face so much lesbophobic pressure to create space for men in our identity/attraction because “you never know, you might feel attracted to a man someday! sexuality is always fluid y’know! maybe you’re not really a lesbian!” we get that pressure both from the outside world AND often from the rest of the LGBTQ+ community too. it’s really harmful and painful to deal with, especially for those of us who’ve had to deal with comphet and still do (aka meeeee)
putting the rest under a readmore cos this is getting long lol
I wish "bi lesbians” and their supporters would take that stuff into consideration...and I wish I saw more people caring in general about the lesbians who are hurting from this.
we’re tired of having the worst assumed of us, of being treated as the “bad guys” by other communities every time we speak up about things that hurt us. statistically, we’re one of the smallest groups in the alphabet soup. we barely even have our own flag, and the creator of our most popular one right now is still facing hate, harassment and being unjustly accused of being a TERF/exclusionist/bigot.
it feels like morale and pride are so low among us right now. we just want people to care about us, to be mindful of how we feel and what we go through as lesbians, to give us the same support and benefit-of-a-doubt that you so easily give to our other LGBTQ+ siblings.
aaand now I’m just emotionally venting lol but TL;DR - I want to be fair to both sides of this topic, cos that’s the type of person I am. I want to stick up for my own community, but I also want to be inclusive to questioning/struggling people and a good ally to my bi sisters. so help me figure all this out. how do y’all feel about what I’ve brought up here?
lesbians and bi women: how do you feel about the point that we’re already using “lesbian” as a roughly gay-equivalent umbrella term for the women we see in relationships with other women? why shouldn’t bi women use it that way too? if they shouldn’t, why aren’t we pushing harder for alternatives like “sapphic” to use in those cases and telling each other to stop when one of us uses “lesbian” or “lesbianism” incorrectly for unspecified wlw couples?
pro-bi-lesbian people: asking in genuine confusion here, how is using the term “bi lesbian” any better than using “bihet” or “bi straight”? how is it not feeding into the misconception that bisexuals are just “half-gay half-straight”? and why is it worth holding onto that label when a) “bisexual” is a mainstream term that, by definition, already has room to encompass your experience, b) other more specific words that mean the same/similar thing already exist for you (i.e. “sapphic”), and c) your term of choice hurts lesbians by undermining our definition of ourselves and adding to the cultural pressure we face to make room for hypothetical future men in our sexuality?
also I want to make it very clear that I’m NOT blaming “bi lesbians” for men feeling entitled to seduce/harass us, or insinuating that you contribute to rape culture or anything like that. predatory men will be predatory no matter what words we use, I fully acknowledge that. rather my concern is that anyone can put pressure on us (and all too often do) to make room for men in our orientation, including within the LGBTQ+ community, and “bi lesbian” as a term contributes to that type of lesbophobia.
please be nice, or at least civil, and talk to me. I want to listen and see if your opinions will help me find some clarity in my own. you’re free to message me or reblog this with your takes on these issues, but if you reblog, please focus on talking with me and don’t fight each other. I will delete this if things get ugly or out of hand.

then i ask this: how would you persuade someone to come around to pet shop boys? my curiosity is peaked 🧐
aaaa you’re gonna regret asking me that sksjsj
so generally i’d say start w listening to their first album ‘please’ bc it’s lichrally just bop after bop after bop and i have So much fun listening to it and like . There’s Brain Cells In That Album like ofc everyone knows west end girls n i think the lyrics are rly cool even in subtle ways like “from lake geneva to the finland station” lyric refers to the route that lenin took when he was came back into russia in ww1 and like other songs ‘opportunities’ are a satire of thatcherite greed n consumerism n the money culture n all that. listening to ‘please’ was the start of my obsession w psb so i always regard it as a good place to start. and of course i could rave abt all the other album individually like ‘actually’ is amazing and had social/political references in it too (like privatisation in ‘shopping’ and AIDS in ‘it couldn’t happen here). ‘introspective’ is so fun to dance to n it’s just an iconic beep boop moment . ‘very’ fucks and it’s Gay ! n even their later albums like ‘electric’ rly banged so hard and i rly liked their most recent album ‘hotspot’ like mmmm love me some warm sounding synthesisers, also everyone stream ‘will-o-the-wisp’
and my fav psb album is the ‘behaviour’ which is so moving n i love it sm like. it has ‘being boring’ on it, which is a song written after neil’s best friend had passed away because of AIDS and it was a reflection of their lives growing up and neil now having to carry on without him. and there’s a lot of references to the AIDS crisis in their songs (bc it is smth that obv they witnessed first hand). and idk i could talk for ages abt ‘behaviour’ but honestly like read the pitchfork review abt the album bc like holy shit it says everything i wanna say (“[Pet Shop Boys] celebrate the melancholia of being gay.”)
like basically what i’m trying to say is that they have the RANGE like they have sad and melancholic songs that are really emotional, but they also have straight up Bops like we’re talking absolute Bangers and they can throw a brain cell or two in there (neil rly like russian history so you get some of those references, and also he likes writing abt stuff he reads like ‘in the night’ was written abt resistance in german-occupied france in ww2 and is also Such a tune like it does slap). and they can be cold n detached in some songs but also other songs are so genuine and sweet and tender and that’s just the power of neil tennant’s voice babey ! n chris lowe fuckin Brings It with the good beep boop music . also like . All of their b-sides are so so good like they don’t hold back w that
also the DRAMA of it all like these bitches put on a mf Show ! like their 1991 tour called ‘performance’ was insane like they did it more as if it was a piece of theatre rather than a concert and there was so many costume changes and it was just so fun to watch ? and their other tours are more concert-like than ‘performance’ but they rly do love a good costume. especially during the very era bc the ‘discovery’ tour was super horny on main and rly rly gay and that was a whole lot of fun too. they like being dramatic and gay and fun and my fav thing abt them is that they have their own little pet shop boys world (they talk abt this a lot themselves as well) where they can do whatever crazy shit they want to do and even though it may not chime w the mainstream or seem weird on the outside, in their own psb world that they’ve constructed, it’s totally chill. wear that stripey orange cone hat ! put a disco ball over your head ! write two musicals, a ballet, make another soundtrack for ‘battleship potemkin’, and do an alan turing tribute at the bbc proms !
pls just listen to them n also look @ the meanings for a lot of theirs songs bc it’s actually interesting as fuck and also just let yourself have fun w it and all the shit they pull. also they’re so fucking funny like i love their personalities so much they really are the supreme double act. their personalities work so well together bc they’re like . complete opposites and they’re actually so funny i love them so so much i really do i could talk forever abt them but i don’t want to dump all that on you sksjs i bet you’re sorry you asked this now.

fun (weird? creepy? quirky?) fact about me: I think brie larson was one of my first mega lady crushes. when I was a wee ten year old lass, I was so obsessed. I put her songs on every single mixtape I made for at least 6 months and named three (3) of them after her (‘brie larson rox I & II’ and ‘brie larson rox my sox’ were the names). I printed out like five pictures of her to take to my hairdresser so I could ensure that I got the exact same haircut as her (side swept bangs forever babey!!). I decided I would become a singer at age 11 and modeled my style after her (I still have my own version of her song ‘shoebox’ and my song inspired by ‘hope has wings’). and I most definitely cried when she won her first oscar a few years back. so you can imagine that I am just over the moon at all the brie in the mainstream world now. I LIVE.
anyways, here’s a few doodles of my sweet baby angel. hope you enjoy!

albums i have enjoyed this year
check em out maybe
(look before tumblr implodes i AM going to use my minimal popularity to attempt to make people listen to my best jamz)
Ariana Grande - Sweetener - maybe you’ve been living under a rock or just avoid radio pop on principle and somehow managed to miss this one, idk. it’s great though and i’m so happy Ari is our main pop girl rn. (choice track: “Breathin”)
Mitski - Be the Cowboy - cinematic and tender and a touch weird. hugely emotional without ever feeling like a drag. it’s got bops, it’s got bangers, it’s got ballads. pop music for sad indie kids. i esp dig the Elvis Costello and the Attractions ish new wave organ that pops up here and there (ct: ”Washing Machine Heart”)
IDLES - Joy as an Act of Resistance - snarling, moody post-punk. doesn’t break any new ground but if you like that kind of thing, boy HOWDY is it good (ct: “Colossus”)
Pusha T - DAYTONA - shame that Kanye is...Kanye, bc his production here is why I fell in love back when “Through the Wire” dropped. the sparse, soulful sample-propelled beats work like *chef’s kiss* with Pusha’s flow. short, concise coke raps from two dudes operating at the top of their game. effortless, no fuckin around, just to-the-point qual la T (ct: “If You Know You Know”)
Iceage - Beyondless - swaggering, woozy rock and roll. idk how to listen to this album during the day. lil bit like a hardcore band tried to do a Velvet Underground album and failed, but like, in a good way ("Pain Killer”)
Brandi Carlile - By the Way, I Forgive You - WXPN singer-songwriter stuff in the best sense. this could be your cool aunt’s favorite album. earnest and heartfelt and yanno sometimes we all need some cheese in our lives (”The Joke”)
Moodie Black - Lucas Acid - backpack rap but the backpack is also filled with angular hooks, gender dysphoria, and about fifty pounds of industrial grime. angry and off-kilter and noisy and anxious. (”Sway”)
SOPHIE - Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides - equal parts abrasive weirdness and deep vulnerability. the very best of ‘what the fuck is this’ future pop anchored by confessional intimacy. lowkey one of the best concept albums i’ve seen in yonks - this is an album about transition, and the fact she just out here not only giving us great music but putting an emotional transfemme narrative into the (relative) mainstream is Big (”Is it Cold in the Water?”)
Travis Scott - ASTROWORLD - ADHD album of the year. this thing is restless, picking up an idea and then dropping it for the next shiny thing a minute later. and it’s all fuckin great, and at some point the disjointedness turns into its own sort of kitchen-sink Vine-compilation flow. also i just like his voice so. (”Stop Trying to be God”)
Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour - COUNTRY POP IS BACK BABEY. a warm summer afternoon of an album. homey and shimmery and optimistic. the songwriting and production are basically perfect, this is basically a perfect album. would be undisputed AOTY for me if it wasn’t currently dark-at-4-pm wintertime thus limiting my ability to listen to anything this comfortable and bright (”Slow Burn“)
Grouper - Grid of Points - speaking of SAD theme music. much like IDLES, this is a ‘if you like the thing then you will like this specific thing’ - it’s a Grouper album, it’s drifty and distant and soothing and slightly unsettling. it does feel a touch less grim than earlier albums but, yanno, is still Grouper (”Driving”)
The Beths - Future Me Hates Me - THE 90S ARE BACK BABEY. this is like, “songs that would have played at the Bronze” type earnest pop punk. catchy, jangly, relatably awkward. songs to put on the jukebox and drunkenly dance and sing along while your friends try not to judge you. (”Happy Unhappy”)
Troye Sivan - Bloom - THE 80S ARE - anyway. pure pop confection. bops bout bottoming. this is for dancing alone in your room lipsyncing into a hairbrush. (”My My My”)
Janelle Monae - Dirty Computer - this kind of makes me want to go listen to Prince, but it’s still super enjoyable. I love Janelle but i’ve never been a whole-album fan of hers? if that makes sense? and this isn’t an exception. but when it hits, mm. one day she will release an album so good the world fuckin stops for it, but until then, this is p good. (”Make Me Feel”)
Snail Mail - Lush - more 90s alt rock i know I KNOW. it’s solid tho. idk if i’d rate it as highly as tastemakers seem to be doing but it does the thing, it does it well. a really good album for listening to on the train. (”Heat Wave”)
Robyn - Honey - it’s fuckin Robyn. again, this is one of those, like, ‘robyn did a good album, do you like robyn? you’ll love this’ things. a scotch more jittery and confessional than you might expect, but i doubt it’d change any minds, but, fuck dude. Robyn is BACK BABEY (”Call Your Girlfriend”)
Tierra Whack - Whack World - as ADHD as ASTROWORLD but instead of doing ALL THE THINGS ALL THE TIME it does an assortment of things very briefly. like a sketchbook of an album. these are all bops and i can’t decide whether i appreciate every song being a minute long, or mad. (”Fruit Salad”)
Parquet Courts - Wide Awake! - dancey post punk. Parquet Courts remains my favorite, uh, Sound? when it comes to guitar music - the tone, the mixing, they just do right by their instruments. in the grand tradition of Gang of Four’s white people funk involving yelling about...whatever (”Wide Awake”)
s/o to Kids See Ghosts, bc I can only do one Kanye-adjacent album this year but that was p good; the new Mariah, Charlie Puth for “Done for Me”, and all the albums i’ve forgotten about bc 2018 was like four years long. also lemme know what i missed like hmu with your ALBUMS OF THE YEAR

Note
some other book series yall should read, while we’re on the subject bc i love books:
The Darkest Minds (kids have sick powers and try to overthrow the government, involves a very Logan-esque side character who is nicknamed Chubs for no discernible reason and has QUALITY angst, as well as an absolute darling of a young girl side character who I WOULD and WILL die for)
Six of Crows (heists, sick one liners, quality ships with appropriate acknowledgement of past trauma and current struggles, did i mention the heists)
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (this one’s more mainstream - kids have peculiarities, one girls floats, there’s my favorite character of all time who is a smug invisible bastard boy, a girl controls fire, one boy has bees in his lungs where’s he put the bees they’re in his lungs babey, also they fight these genuinely chilling monsters and easjfskdjglgkl)
^^^ DO NOT JUDGE THIS ONE ON THE MOVIE. THEY CHANGED LITERALLY SO MUCH AND WHILE THE MOVIE ON ITS OWN IS SUPPOSEDLY GOOD THE BOOK IS TEN TIMES BETTER. thank you i will step off my soapbox now
The Naturals (teens with cool talents like being a literal human lie detector or a statistical genius help solve cold cases, also underlying plot of oh-good-lord-where-did-my-mom-go. this one has a pretty constant romantic subplot that i don’t care for but the true crime and found family of it all….effervescent)
You literally just convinced me to read the selection series
:o!!! im so glad, it’s so good bro
