one of the first things i noticed after moving into ~*~my house~*~ is that (probably because it's on a street that gets a lot of pedestrian traffic to/from the nearby corner store) a lot of people were tossing litter into the front garden bed. liquor bottles and vapes and plastic wrappers and the like. which, you know, gross, please don't do that, we live in a society, but also where the fuck else are you supposed to put it? there's no city trash cans on this street.
and, well, we were tearing out most of the plants in those front beds anyway because the previous owner of the house made some very odd garden decisions ("endless landscaping" the house listing said, and if by "endless" they meant the sheer quantity of biomass that needs removed, they were right) and we want to put in more drought-tolerant native plants, so i went online and spent about $100 on a large sturdy outdoor trash can and set it up in front of my house. (quite cheap as house-related purchases go; i spent $100 on gravel last week.)
guess how many liquor bottles i've had to pick out of my garden since then? ZERO. and it's really convenient for ME when i'm coming home with an empty boba, or opening mail out by the mailbox, or picking up the yard a little bit. and according to @combat-epistemologist (who does more yard work than i do) people walking past have actually thanked us for installing the trash can, which is extremely cool. i did a civic service!! i made my neighborhood better!!! i'm helping :D
#the trashcan speaks#idk. feels good to actually tangibly make the world around me just slightly better for everyone#i should go to more city council meetingssssss#housepoasting

what are some impulsive purchases the firsts have made?
Sephiroth, the "I just Thought It Looked Interesting" Purchaser:
• A pendulum wall clock shaped like a lucky cat.
• A snuggie.
• Several lava lamps.
• An armillary sphere that barely fit through his apartment door.
• A feather quill pen that Angeal tried to veto because "you're never going to use it" that Sephiroth only uses when he's in Angeal's visual range.
• A pack of scented markers.
Angeal, the "It was On Sale" Purchaser:
• Bongos he bought at a garage sale for 10 gil (10¢).
• Five crates of zucchini he got for free from a farmer in the grasslands. Angeal's recipes included zucchini for three weeks.
• One set of 10 folding chairs was 40% off so he bought two sets. He lied and told Genesis that he only bought one though.
• A used automatic pet feeder with a camera he bought from a shady guy online that was "basically a steal." He doesn't have pets, so instead he fills it with veggie chips and leaves it in his office. He has multiple videos from the feeder where the timer goes off, and Sephiroth, Genesis and Zack sneak in to grab some chips.
Genesis, the "I'm Rich So It Doesn't Matter" Purchaser:
• An expensive liquor bottle in a language he couldn't read that ended up being fancy bottled water.
• An ice sculpture of himself that was delivered while he was out. He came back and it was a puddle in front of his door.
• A plain, black T-shirt that was designer and therefore 10,000 gil. He told Angeal the price and got lectured for three hours.
Zack, the "YOLO" Purchaser Killer Of His Bank Account:
• A Silver Elite premium membership card that comes with the chance to get a photo with Sephiroth. Even though he knows Sephiroth personally.
• An expensive leather jacket complete with spikes. He wore it once and then never again because he thought he looked mean and unapproachable.
• A trampoline.
• A three person bike that Angeal made him return after he, Cloud and Kunsel almost died on the highway.
• A Touch Me he bought from a shady guy in the slums that he intended to keep as a pet, but ended up escaping and causing a SOLDIER Frog catastrophe.

10 Dance - chapter 40, part 2 summary
At the after party for the Japan International, Nino seeks out Suzuki to talk to him about a decision he's made after witnessing his performance. Also, Max talks business with Sugiki, and puts forth a proposal for him to consider.

Chapter 40, part 2: Come On-a My Life
Published online on July 14th, 2023, available to purchase on Comic Days, or rent for 10 days on Yanmaga.
At the after party, Nino walks purposefully through the venue, ignoring various people who keep calling out asking him to join them. He thinks to himself that the steps he's taking now are toward the future, down a path heading to the unknown.
Elsewhere in the room, Fabio asks Aki to come give him a kiss on the cheek as he holds up his phone to take a selfie. She complies and asks what the photo is for, to which he replies that he'll post it on Instagram. She comments that he seems to be in a great mood, and he gleefully says that he managed to score a contract with Max. Aki thinks that's amazing, and says Fabio should have a lavish advertising budget now.
Suzuki is nearby, and he takes a drink as he reflects on Sugiki freezing up during the honor dance. He mutters to himself that he didn't let Sugiki go just for things to end up like this. Fabio comes over and asks Suzuki to kiss his cheek for a TikTok video, and as Suzuki does so, he continues to think about Sugiki, how he's top-notch, beautiful, and independent. He couldn't allow his desire for such a dazzling man to cause Sugiki to falter. That's why he had to separate himself from Sugiki, as Suzuki believes himself to have always been deeply flawed. As he thinks about this, he recalls kissing Sugiki backstage, and ends up grabbing Fabio's face and letting his lips drift from his cheek to his mouth. Fabio's phone starts ringing and Suzuki breaks off the kiss, apologizing as he steps away. As Fabio answers the phone, he mumbles that Suzuki teasing him like that could end up with Fabio straddling him. Nino is on the other end, and he asks Fabio if Suzuki is with him. Fabio replies that he was just there, and giddily says that he was being a total flirt. Nino demands for Fabio to keep Suzuki there, and asks where they’re at.
Nino flashes back to a video call he had with Ernie (who was inexplicably donning bear ears, paws, and seemingly little else). Ernie said that the reason Alberto didn’t want Nino to go see Suzuki dance live is because he felt it could pose a threat to his own position. Nino is the top coach for the top-level pros, and Al knows that their arrangement doesn’t rely just on money, but on Nino’s assessment of them. What Al is most afraid of is for Nino to discover a new “it couple”. Ernie said that for this reason Nino absolutely must go see Suzuki’s dancing in person.
In the present, as Nino continues walking, he thinks how each step he takes toward Suzuki makes him realize even more clearly that dance has been used as a tool for communication since ancient times, and regardless of one’s place in society it’s as free as the human spirit. Nino finally reaches Suzuki and declares that he wants to be his coach.
Back at Max’s mansion, Sugiki coughs as he tastes the drink Max gave him, saying that it’s not rum like he asked for. Max takes it back from him and says he’ll make it more palatable. He pours the liquor into a taller glass, adds ice and stirs, then adds carbonated water and stirs again. He asks Sugiki to try it now, explaining that it’s a Yamazaki single malt whiskey. Sugiki says he doesn’t drink whiskey since the smell makes him think of old men. Max says he can just try a sip, which Sugiki does begrudgingly. Max says that it’s time for them to get down to business, and talks about how in the Muldaur family with its far-reaching influence, the parents typically pass along a unique sort of education to their offspring, similar to training royalty on how to rule. He notes, however, that his daughters and their husbands have no interest in following in his footsteps, as one has to have the resolve to leap head-on into a whirlpool to do what he does. As Sugiki finishes his drink and Max starts to make him another, Max asks if he wants power. He says it looks to him like there’s currently no core that unites the dance industry. That’s something of great interest to his family, as they’re always on the lookout for markets they can invest in and expand. It helps those industries flourish, and brings profit for themselves, so it’s a win-win for everyone. However, doing this requires a specialist who is highly familiar with that world. Sugiki says that he’s not going to let Max use him for this, and Max says that this is about more than merely using him; he actually wants Sugiki to be his successor.
Back at the party, Suzuki barely has a chance to react before Nino says he has to be the one to take the reins of a nonstandard, monster class dancer like Suzuki; in fact, he believes no one else could possibly do it, and he finds Suzuki to be utterly fascinating. Suzuki thinks about being classified as a monster just like Sugiki, and smiles with a little blush as he wonders aloud if what Nino is saying is really true. Nino sighs and says that he’s going to explain Suzuki’s true nature to him.

Let's see if I understand correctly ...
The big deal about the Dec. 1 availability in the US is because this is the first time the whisky would be on the shelf, physically available for purchase, vs ordering/shipping via Reserve Bar or whoever. And, yes, it took me a while to put this together because:
I really didn't pay close attention 😁 and, mostly since I live in a state (Pennsylvania) with draconian liquor laws/regulations I am unable to have it delivered to me. (FYI several states in the US have similar restrictions). And the chances of seeing any Sassanach Spirits on the shelf are probably slim to none since we have a state-controlled liquor store system, vs Total Wine type stores for purchase.
I like a good whisky sour and have been known to have an old fashioned now and then. But honestly, I'm a beer drinker. Then wine. I don't dislike spirits, just not my go to adult beverage. And no matter how curious I would be to try the Sassanach, I would not purchase it without being able to sample first, especially with a price point of over $100 US! (b-t-w, you can substitute any name of booze for SS, my statement remains. I want to know that I will like it, really like it, before spending that much).
NY sold out of all 400 bottles ... so patrons are back to ordering online. Unless it can be restocked in a timely manner. Assuming Miami will be a wash-rinse-repeat. But will it be available at other TW locations? Were NY and Miami just test markets to see if it would sell? And if so, what could they be learning that they didn't already know:
Fans will flock to these locations to buy the booze because they can have their name and his signature written on the neck of the bottle,
Fans will flock to these locations to stand next to SAMMF (yes, I deliberately combined the initials of the real person with the fictional character, because, well, haven't some of them already done so?) and
Fans will flock to these locations to have a selfie taken. And of course, post it on sm praising him and his product to high heavens.
And before anyone says it, yes, I know that every product/service out there has a "customer base" or "regulars." However, if you want to sustain or grow, you need to bring new customers into the fold. You can't keep picking the same pockets over and over again.

Third spaces were such a big deal throughout history that it's become a literal meme for the fantasy genre: "You all meet in a tavern..." Then it moved to local pubs then to social clubs then to organized not-that-physically-demanding sports leagues like bowling or darts then to coffee shops and then...well...nowhere.
Third spaces are the central social hub where people would hang out and talk and tell stories and catch up on gossip and current events and talk about grievances and get angry at power structures with one another and make plans to address issues...starting to see why this feels a bit intentional and systematic? And again, it's not a recent thing. The scene in Hamilton where they're all drinking and planning the American Revolution was more or less how it happened in history. Rebellions and revolutions and unions and strikes all started with people hanging out in third spaces and talking.
Now, third spaces are a luxury for the rich. Country club memberships, yacht parties, exclusive social events like charity galas and political fundraisers, etc.
What happened? Ask yourself if you were going to go to the local bowling alley or pool hall or American Legion, how would you get there? Drive. How far would you drive? How much traffic would you face? How long would you be able to spend there considering the time to get there and get home in time to get enough sleep for work the next day? And that's assuming you even have the ability to do so with expenses like gas and parking fees and tolls and child care.
Meanwhile, the specific places are less friendly to just hanging out. Not just for the reasons mentioned above, but also because they're just no longer good places to chill. Bars play loud music, restaurants are built to turn over customers faster, bowling alleys and pool halls and the like tend to charge per person per hour instead of per game (so you can't take your time and play at a leisurely pace to spend time talking and stretch your dollar), and a LOT of locations close far too early.
Not to mention a lot of the over-commercialization of these spaces is driven by rising real estate prices. Unless you're constantly turning over tables or getting more money out of guests, it's not easy to afford the lease on a property in a good location. In my particular industry (tabletop gaming), it happened a lot in the 2010s with a lot of hobby game stores closing due to rising rent as people would just hang out and play D&D or Magic: The Gathering or Settlers of Catan all day and only make one purchase for the entire time giving over to game cafes that served food, coffee/tea, and sometimes beer/wine/liquor to squeeze more money out of people.
Sure, online communities can pick up the slack, but a lot of those aren't exactly safe spaces. Google, Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, etc. can monitor everything said even in private groups and chats then sell that information. Or, as seen in a few recent cases, hand the private information over to law enforcement. Kind of hard to talk about forming a union or organizing a protest when the place you're discussing it is logging every word and handing it right over to the people you're looking to organize against.
