Uluwatu Temple, holds the distinction of being one of Bali‘s most renowned temples due to its spectacular clifftop location. It dominates the precipitous sea cliffs overlooking one of Bali’s premier surf spots. The temple’s name is derived from the Balinese language, with “Ulu” signifying “tip” or “land’s end,” and “Watu” meaning rock.
Its purpose is to safeguard Bali against malevolent sea spirits, while the forest-dwelling monkeys near the entrance are believed to protect the temple from negative influences. A picturesque pathway winds its way from the entrance to the temple, offering awe-inspiring viewpoints. This is restricted to Hindu worshippers, although the sunset Kecak dance performances held here daily make the visit truly worthwhile.
Tumblr media
The temple holds fame for its distinctive offshore setting and the captivating backdrops it provides during sunset. It is an ancient Hindu shrine that rests atop a rock formation amidst the relentless crashing waves. Tanah Lot Temple stands as one of the iconic attractions in Bali that visitors must not miss. Best Places to Visit in Bali: Best Beaches, Things to Do, and Best Time to Visit
Tumblr media
Bali is an idyllic location with pristine beaches, dense greenery, picturesque sunsets, and vibrant cultural displays. It boasts some of the most stunning tourist attractions the world over, offering visitors limitless options to explore its scenic spots. During the day, one can choose from an assortment of destinations including cliff-side temples, verdant forests teeming with monkeys, beach clubs with breathtaking infinity pools, and lesser-known cascades nestled in hidden corners. When the sun sets, world-class bars with stunning views and architecturally mesmerizing restaurants await, before retiring to luxuriously decorated accommodations.  However, it can be tough to decide where to embark on an adventure to discover Bali's most breathtaking sights. Search no more. Here are some of our top picks from across the island, from trendy Canggu and upscale Seminyak's most popular spots for Instagram snaps, to awe-inspiring natural wonders adorning the jungle. Enjoy your visit! Best time to visit Bali  The best time to visit Bali is generally from April to October, which is the dry season. During this time, the weather is sunny, the beaches are beautiful, and outdoor activities are enjoyable. However, Bali can be visited throughout the year as the temperature remains warm and tropical. The rainy season, from November to March, can still be a great time to visit as well, as the island is quieter and the landscape is lush and green. Just be prepared for occasional showers and some humidity. Ultimately, the best time to visit Bali depends on your personal preferences and travel plans. Best Places to Visit in Bali - The temple in the clouds – Karangasem
Tumblr media
To fully experience Bali, a trip to the island's most well-known temples is a must, and among them, Pura Lempuyang stands out as our favorite due to its extraordinary appeal. The oldest Hindu temple in Bali, it sits atop Mount Lempuyang in Karangasem and is known as the "Gateway to Heaven," featuring a sequence of seven temples that ascend along the mountainside. To behold the awe-inspiring valleys, volcanoes, and ocean vistas, you'll need to climb at least 1,700 steps, but trust us, it will be worth it. Tanah Lot's ocean temple and Pura Luhur Uluwatu, which sits high above Uluwatu's famous surf breaks on a cliff-side, are two additional stunning temple destinations to visit when in Bali. - Sunrise views atop Mount Batur – Kintamani
Tumblr media
Bali's collection of active volcanoes offer breathtaking views, with Mount Batur being the most popular destination for a sunrise hike. Departure is before sunrise, around 3am, to begin the trek in darkness. Reaching the peak and crater just in time for sunrise, hikers are treated to a magnificent view of Bali's volcanic landscapes, tinted a warm golden color, with clouds beneath them. To fully experience this island getaway, consider staying in Sidemen Valley and booking a Mount Batur tour. The valley is situated roughly one hour away from the base of Mount Batur. - The sacred Bali lakes – Bedugul
Tumblr media
Bali's lakes are enchanting, with serene waters and stunning surroundings that create beautiful reflections. Danau Beratan at Bedugul is our favorite lake in Bali, being the island's second largest and situated between Mount Beratan and Mount Catur. However, the focal point of this lake is the sacred and magnificent Pura Ulun Danu Beratan temple, located at the center. At dawn or dusk, when the mountain mist rolls in, the temple appears to float, creating a truly magical sight. - West Bali National Park – Buleleng
Tumblr media
Escape the hustle and bustle of South Bali and venture north to Taman Nasional Bali Barat, also called the West Bali National Park. This vast area spans 77,000 hectares of pristine wilderness, home to various flora and fauna species. A leisurely walk through the park rewards with sights of mountains, mangroves, jungle, and rare Jalak Bali birds, native to the area. Menjangan Island is nearby, where diving into the depths presents lively coral and the chance to spot Nemo. -  Ray of light at Tukad Cepung waterfall – Bangli
Tumblr media
At Tukad Cepung, photographers are well aware that lighting is key, and this waterfall seems to have mastered it. Its ethereal rays of light shine through the rocks only when the sun is in a specific position in the sky, making it a perfect subject for the camera. Tucked away in a dark cove with a cascade of water flowing from the spectacular beams above, it's no wonder why Tukad Cepung is fast becoming a must-see attraction for Instagrammers. Pro tip: combine your visit with a side trip to Tibumana Waterfall (just a 30-minute drive away) or review our complete list of Bali's finest waterfalls. - Artwork at Ubud Art Market – Ubud
Tumblr media
The Ubud Art Market is an attractive spot. You can admire the skilled artistry and purchase Balinese mementos to bring home. The marketplace contains various bohemian-style souvenirs including wooden ornaments, hand-carved trinkets, rattan handbags, dreamcatchers, flowy beach clothing and many other items. Take your time exploring the different stalls and, when finished, continue your adventure in Ubud's lesser-known areas such as the widely known Serayu Pot, a pottery and terracotta workshop that's perfect for a photo-op. - The bamboo wonderland at Bambu Indah – Ubud
Tumblr media
Bambu Indah in Ubud is an eco-friendly and sustainable boutique hotel that is almost entirely made up of natural materials. You can experience the breathtaking beauty of the hotel's surroundings even if you're not a guest by purchasing a day pass. The bamboo elevator takes you through the center of the gorge and emerges into a lush paradise filled with natural springs, verdant foliage, and an abundance of wildlife. Buffalo are washed in the river, local Balinese black pigs can be met, and a floating lunch over the rushing rapids offers a perfect end to the day. - Kelingking Beach – Nusa Penida
Tumblr media
Bali undoubtedly possesses some of the most exquisite beaches globally, adorned with immaculate white sands, crystalline waters, and all the quintessential features of paradise. Nonetheless, one particular beach has earned worldwide recognition – the mesmerizing Kelingking Beach. As we have all witnessed, from an aerial view, the green emerald cliff-line majestically rises from the aquamarine waters below. This viral photo spot is situated on Nusa Penida, the adjacent island to Nusa Lembongan, which can be reached via a 40-minute ferry ride from Bali's mainland. While a visit to Kelingking Beach is essential to get that perfect shot, take the time to discover the remainder of the island. - yellow “Bridge of Love” – Nusa Lembongan
Tumblr media
Travel to Nusa Lembongan, the magnificent island located just a short 40-minute boat ride from the Bali mainland, and you will come across the renowned Yellow Bridge, also known as The Bridge of Love, which links Lembongan to its smaller sibling, Nusa Ceningan. A visit to this bridge is a must on any travel agenda and is often depicted on Instagram accounts worldwide due to its stunning appearance - the bright yellow color of the bridge is suspended above the turquoise sea below. At night, the bridge transforms into a legendary landmark as it lights up, providing a completely different scenic view worth capturing. - Famous Bali swing – Ubud
Tumblr media
A must-try for any thrill-seeker visiting Bali is the exhilarating experience of flying through the jungle on a massive swing, which is one of the top tourist attractions on the island. The Tegallalang Rice Terraces offer a spectacular view from the most famous Alas Harum swing, but other swings are also becoming increasingly popular in Ubud and beyond. Despite the crowds and frequent photo sessions, the feeling of soaring above the trees makes enduring the hustle and bustle of tourists completely worthwhile.  Art and Culture in Bali
When you are travelling, finding out the cultural and historical heritage of a place is always fun and inspiring. And Balinese art and culture are arguably one of the most artistic cultures in the world. Skillful painters, woodcarvers, dancers, music and Balinese cuisine, are some of the greatest Balinese highlights.
Take A Trip To Artisans Village: Get more in-depth insights into the local art and culture of Bali by visiting some of the artist communities. The island's Celuk village is the residence of the silversmiths where you can shop for high-quality jewellery and even learn how to craft them yourselves. Batuan village in Ubud is another village famous for its traditional paintings. Here you can see Balinese art in its purest form without any foreign influence. This village is also a centre for wood carving and dancing. Another touristic village is Mas Village famous for its high-quality wood carving.
Watch A Traditional Dance: Bali’s cultural centre Ubud has multiple venues where men and women perform Balinese dance forms such as Legong, Topeng, Kecak and Barong. For a mesmerising sight, take a trip to Ubud Palace where Balinese girls in ornate ceremonial attire dance with graceful eye and hand gestures to tell age-old chronicles often from Hindu epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata but with Balinese influence.

Water Blow in Nusa Dua lets you witness the awesome power of nature as large waves from the Indian Ocean constantly crash against the jagged limestone edges on the peninsula’s south-eastern cliff. Indeed, the crashing waves can reach up to several metres high. The lookout is a circular cement stage bordered by guardrails. It is built with a large stone in the middle with benches where you can take a seat and wait for each wave. The so called ‘water blows’ result from the narrowing crag below the cliff face that channel a massive surge of water up to 30m high from its base following strong currents. While it is a pleasant view for taking photos, be sure to protect your camera gear from the unpredictable splashes and sprays. The chances of getting completely drenched are extremely high.
Padang Padang Beach, locally referred to as Pantai Labuan Sait, is one of Bali’s most famous surf spots, located on the north-western coast of the island’s Bukit Peninsula, and just a kilometre southwest of the Anantara Bali Uluwatu. Part of the group of world-class surf spots that line the coast of the southern peninsula, Padang Padang Beach lies several kilometres in between Bingin and Uluwatu, among which surfers usually hop to interchangeably for a different set of challenges and another thrill for the day.
This beach features an exotic setting -- a hundred meter-long stretch of sand that is accessible down a flight of stairs through a unique hollow rock entrance. Once you reach the bottom of the stairs, you are greeted by a gorgeous sight: a fringed beach with fine, white sand, blue waters and a distant horizon.

Uluwatu Temple, or Pura Luhur Uluwatu, one of six key temples believed to be Bali's spiritual pillars, is renowned for its magnificent location, perched on top of a steep cliff approximately 70 metres above sea level. This temple also shares the splendid sunset backdrops as that of Tanah Lot Temple, another important sea temple located in the island's western shores. Pura Luhur Uluwatu is definitely one of the top places on the island to go to for sunset delights, with direct views overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean and daily Kecak dance performances. Balinese architecture, traditionally-designed gateways, and ancient sculptures add to Uluwatu Temple's appeal.
The Kecak Fire Dance, held at the sunset, is one of Bali’s most iconic art performances, famous for its dominant use of human vocals in place of gamelan instruments to accompany the dance-drama at its core. Your visit to the island won’t be complete without seeing a show, and the best place to do so is at the cliff-top amphitheatre located just south of the Uluwatu Temple.
After the show, we found ourselves chanting for quite a few more days. Haha!
