" This small, brilliantly colored frog has its name due to its small distribution, being endemic to the Golfo Dulce region of Costa Rica. The flashy colouration is typical for poison dart frogs, as this evolutionary adaptation (called aposematism) serves as a warning signal to predators about their toxicity. Interestingly, they don't seem to produce their own toxins, but instead obtain it from a specialized arthropod-rich diet through beetles of the family 𝑴𝒆𝒍𝒚𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒂𝒆. This is reinforced by captive individuals becoming far less poisonous or even not poisonous at all! "

Costa Rica is, first and foremost, a land of insects. But a reasonably close second are birds - so many different brilliantly coloured species, drawing representatives from virtually all orders. Many species from further north in the US and Canada migrate here, and many tropical and South American species make this jungle parade home. One iconic and somewhat local species is the fiery-billed Aracari, a toucan that is found frequenting trees especially along the mid-Pacific coast. White-nosed Coati Nasua narica

7/25/2023 Valle Escondido Preserve, Costa Rica

This was the only time we saw a coati while we were in Costa Rica, and it just popped out of nowhere right in front of us, trotted casually across the path, and disappeared into the forest on the other side. We saw it for maybe 10 seconds, and thankfully were able to snap a couple photos before it was gone. Very cool to see one in the wild!
