The root of Talder tragedy

Tally doesn't think that intent is magic, but Alder kind of does? So, Alder often talks about having no choice, and how the ends justified the means (example: her decision to deploy the Citydrop privates), but ultimately, she falls back on her internal motive, that she did all of the things she did with the intent to protect her people. She believes that that is sufficient to engender (enough) trust between her and the unit to work together in 1x10. Tally is focused on the practical fallout of things. In 2x6, "[Alder] causes more problems than she fixes, doesn't she?" In 3x1, she beats herself up for accidentally compromising the Dodger facility. "Oh, if you ever need anyone to ruin everything, I am available. No, seriously. Alder, Penelope, now this? I may just be the Camarilla's greatest weapon." something something linked to how her Sight focuses her on how the world will be, not how she wishes. So, of course, these two mindsets collide in the worst possible way in 2x5. Tally is focused on the effect of Liberia leading to the creation of the Spree. Very notably, Alder immediately concedes the point that it was a bad call. "one of my deepest regrets", "an even deeper moment of personal failure", "prideful failings". She did the same in 1x10, easily conceding that she did all of the things the unit accused her of, holding that she wasn't the same as Spree simply because of her motive. In 2x5, what Alder fires back at Tally as the transgression that Alder is offended by isn't about the actions. She is incensed by "accusations of conspiracy and nefarious intent". Arguably, Alder does not pursue punitive action against Tally for this because Tally successfully protests the framework. "I just wanted answers" successfully shows that Tally was not looking at Alder's intent. Unfortunately, Alder and Tally are similar on this point of what stirs them to anger: to be willfully misunderstood. Alder tolerates the power-jockeying of her subordinates for the most part, so long as they're on the same page that it's all for the sake of protecting their people. For anyone to intimate that she does more selfish things is where she gets incensed. I wrote previously how Tally gets the most enraged when others impugn how she should feel. So, Alder thought that Tally attacked her intent (which is magic), but then let it go when Tally cleared that up. Unfortunately, in doing so she attacked how Tally should feel and act about it. And the root of the tragedy is that though they are similar in what moves them to anger, they are drastically divergent on how they act on that anger. Where Alder's reaction to slights is to rebuke then forget (because she has the power to do so), Tally's reaction to slights is to burn bridges. So, Tally doubles down on "it's about the consequences, intent is not magic" and tries to tear it all down. In 2x10, her empathy wins out. She says to both Nicte and Alder that she understands that they didn't have nefarious intent. However, this is Tally just sympathizing with them, not that she has changed her mind on what matters. She can't get over how her own actions seemed to have backfired, no matter her intent. (And so, this history fundamentally influences how Tally and Alder interact in S3, where they consciously try to avoid falling into the same failure modes with engaging with each other.)

In the Hunger Games AU, is Kate more like Katniss, or like Annie? Will she be an active rebell, or will she be traumatized? I never thought about it, but Anthony and Finnick are actually really alike. I don‘t really see him as peeta, but you can probably make anything work!

I think Kate is more like Katniss than Annie but I think, realistically, no one goes through 23 other people dying so you can live unscathed.

So here’s the way I see it.

People in the capitol actually already know Kate because she was interviewed when Anthony was in the games. Everyone told the reporters they should talk to Kate Sharma and they’d found her a fairly taciturn 16 year old girl. Who had flinched every time Anthony’s name had been mentioned because she hadn’t wanted to believe he was coming home. But she was nearly the first person the greet him when he got off the train, her arms wrapped tightly around him as their lips met.

So everyone in the capitol is aware of Kate Sharma. And Anthony doesn’t want to know if he’s the reason Edwina’s name got pulled out. If this was punishment for his refusal to play by their rules. It doesn’t really need to know, because whatever he does: Kate is getting out of that arena. He’ll beg on television for the capitol’s favour if it means they’ll sponsor her and send her out of there.

Does anyone ever just think about how our sweet Kathani Sharma almost went back to India because she felt like a burden to her family? Like she would have gone to be a governess and lived alone without even Edwina or Mary just because she didn't want them to feel they had to take care of her. Why would they call it lust stories and have three out of the four stories be so...not about lust? Yes, lust can be varied, but clearly they mean to lust/desire/sex/bodies and yet, only Konkana Sen Sharma's The Mirror got the memo. Acknowleding Lust is just step one of being sex positive, and somehow that doesn't come across at all.

The first story tries so hard, to say sex is an important part of life, you must know before you get married, which is actually great to hear. But then the grandmother tells her son and daughter-in-law, they aren't happy cause they don't have sex. The granddaughter will not happy, if she doesn't orgasm, and the groom will make himself sad cause she can't orgasm. I get it, but the logic was so flawed and dialogues didn't even try to encompass all of the complexities that exist in marriage or even sex.

The Mirror (clearly, the one I bothered to find the name of) was the best of the lot, it got me feeling all the excitment, the desire, the thrill, the rush, and even the shame that is somehow an underbelly to desire in these situations. When she's crying in bed cause she's got a migraine and unable to orgasm, my heart just went out to her. The husband too, when he asks why he was the only one in the dark, when both the women knew what was going on.

The third story went down hill the minute he crashed the car cause he saw boobs, like sir, what are you, a 16yo? He dies cause he can't stop himself from wanting to fuck his ex-wife, who has suddenly become curvier and sexier? Even if its meant to be a dream, it was a bad one. All that chemistry between Vijay and Tamanah wasted cause it was just so slimy.

The last story was trauma porn, Kajol was wonderful, her drunken husband was true to his character. If in the previous story, the man gets punished for his lust, in this one there is no redemption for anyone. Are we supposed to not sympathise with Kajol? Cause she deserved to get out of that fucking house.

Either way, why did I watch this and ruin my enforced off day?

Betaed by iberiandoctor With an old-school fandom, I figured why not go for an old-school format?

Fic wittering and explanation of a sedoretu behind the read-more.

sedoretuex has revealed, and I can now reveal that I wrote TWO stories! (I have not yet had time to read any stories but my own--I have been really busy this January--but I am planning on making my way through the collection soon.)

My second story for this exchange was a pinch hit for tielan that I had been eyeing for treat purposes since the beginning, because our tastes are very similar and every one of her ideas was amazing and absolutely a story I wanted to exist. But there was a problem! Each one of those stories, my feeling was "I want that to exist, but I don't know if I can do justice to it."

Here were my main options:

1) Relationship and prompt I have written for tielan before (MCU, Steve/Maria/Natasha/Bucky, the previous fic being Look Clear and Calm)

2) Really interesting relationship and prompt from a TV show I've only seen sporadic episodes of (Simon Basset/Anthony Bridgerton/Daphne Bridgerton/Kate Sharma (Bridgerton TV), The oldest son and oldest daughter of the Bridgerton family finding and settling on a sedoretu husband and wife for their familial quartet. In the middle of the season. With the ton looking on.)

3) Relationship I requested myself and would really like to se done, but I requested it because I'm not sure of my ability to write it and the canon is a TV show I haven't watched in almost 2 decades. (BSG, Lee/Kara/Sam/Dee)

4) Relationship I already wrote for this ficathon for my original assignment. (Star Wars Legends, Luke/Mara/Leia/Han, the other fic being Dawning Understanding)

And these were just the top four. There were 13 requested quartets and I could have written 10 of them! I was spoiled for choice! Honestly, it was a little bit paralyzing.

But in the end, I went with BSG, and decided that Wikipedia would have to be enough canon review. And it really did write itself; everything poured out. As always, for me, Dee was going to have a major role and survive; I love her and she was done so dirty by canon. Her death was the first time I got incandescently angry about a fridging because I could see it for what it was. And of the relationships in this foursome, Lee/Kara is my least favorite. (I am glad that in Kara we got to have a female character who was fucked up and messy and not punished for it or considered 'whiny,' but at the same time, there were a lot of other fucked up and messy female characters on that show, and a lot of the other character arcs interested me more than 'cosmic destiny + will she and Lee ever get their act together.' But I know that Lee/Kara is tielan's favorite! So as I was plotting out each section I had to restrain myself: how much Dee was too much? What could I find to say about the other three? Because if I was writing it for myself, the balance would have been very different. (But I think it would have been a weaker story, less balanced.)

A sedoretu is a specific organization of a poly marriage created by Ursula K. Le Guin in her short story "A Fisherman of the Inland Sea" aka "Another Story" available in a 1994 short story collection of the same name. It includes four people and specific arrangements of the relationships inside it. All people have a "moiety" that is considered as inherent as gender; the two moieties are Morning and Evening. Sex with someone of the same moiety is considered incest. The expected relationships within each sedoretu are: The Morning woman and the Evening man (the “Morning marriage”) The Evening woman and the Morning man (the “Evening marriage”) The Morning woman and the Evening woman (the “Day marriage”) The Morning man and the Evening man (the “Night marriage”) (i.e. two homosexual and two heterosexual pairings)

1. Transsexual burns childhood friend alive in Tamil Nadu

Transsexual burns childhood friend alive in Tamil Nadu On Christmas day, last year, 27-year-old Vetrimaran (born as Pandi Maheswari), burned his childhood friend, R Nandhini alive, suspecting that Nandhini was not romantically interested in him. The incident took place in Chennai's Thazhambur, on Nandhini's birthday eve. Vetrimaran, who underwent a sex reassignment surgery to marry Nandhini, took her out on the pretext of a birthday surprise. Vetrimaran then blindfolded Nandhini, tied her with a chain and slashed her wrist using a blade before setting her ablaze. Locals heard her screams and rushed her to the hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Vetrimaran confessed to the crime during police interrogation.

2. Shraddha Walkar murder case

Shraddha Walkar (27) was murdered by her live-in boyfriend Aaftab Poonawala on May 18, 2022, in Delhi. Aaftab strangled Shraddha over an arguement and dismembered her body into 35 pieces using different kinds of weapons, which he disposed off individually in the Chhatarpur forest. He stored her body parts in a 300-litre fridge. Poonawala was held on November 12 by Delhi police and confessed to the killing during interrogation. The case came to light after about six months, when Shraddha's father filed a missing person's complaint. He demanded capital punishment for Aaftab and a thorough probe against the Poonawala family.

3. Hyderabad doctor raped, set ablaze

A 26-yr-old veterinary doctor in Telangana was sexually assaulted, smothered and set ablaze. According to police reports, the victim after parking her two-wheeler, hired a taxi and went to a dermatologist's office. The four accused noticed her while parking and deflated her vehicle's tire in her absence. Upon returning the victim was offered help by the accused who then ambushed her. Three of the accused pushed her into the nearby bushes, poured whiskey into her mouth to put an end to her screams for help, and sexually assaulted her until the victim bled and lost consciousness. When she regained consciousness, she was smothered and her corpse was carried for 27 km. The victim's body was wrapped up in a blanket and set ablaze at 2.30 am on the Hyderabad Outer Ring Road under a bridge using furl. The four accused were killed in a police encounter, at 3.30 am on December 6, 2019.

4. Nithari serial killings case

The Nithari killings case came to light after the disappearance of several children from Nithari village in Noida and when 8 skeletal remains of kids were found from the drain of Moninder Singh Pandher's house on December 29. Investigations pointed to Moninder and his domestic help Surinder Koli who were arrested. After 60 days of police custody, Koli confessed to luring and murdering the victims. The confession included necrophilia, cannibalism and dismembering of the corpses. The duo was convicted of rape and murder but were acquitted due to lack of evidences.

5. Tandoor murder case

Naina Sahni, wife of Sushil Sharma, was shot by her husband over suspicion of an extramarital affair on July 2, 1995. Her body was chopped into pieces and stuffed into a tandoor which was managed by Sharma's friend. Smoke from the tandoor attracted police who were patrolling in the area. Sharma was arrested after Naina's half-burnt body parts were found. He was awarded the death sentence, but the Supreme Court commuted it to life imprisonment. Sharma was released from prison after 23 years.

6. Sheena bora murder case

Sheena Bora (24) was allegedly strangled in a car by Indrani Mukherjee, her then-driver Shyamvar Rai, and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna in April 2012. Sheena's body was later found burnt in a forest in Raigad district. Financial disputes as well as Indrani's opposition to Sheena's relationship was the motive for the killing. The crime came to light 3 years later when Shyamvar was arrested in another case and turned approver in the Sheena Bora murder case which led to Indrani's arrest. The CBI convicted Indrani but the Supreme Court granted her bail citing that she had already been in custody for six-and-a-half years.

7. Sanjay & Geeta Chopra murder case

Siblings Geeta Chopra (16) and Sanjay Chopra (14) were kidnapped and murdered in 1978 in New Delhi while they were on their way to the All India Radio (AIR) office to participate in a programme called 'Yuvavani'. Kuljeet Singh (alias Ranga Khus) and Jasbir Singh (alias Billa) were convicted for the crime. They abducted the siblings for ransom, on the pretext of giving them a ride to their destination, but later killed them upon knowing that their father was a naval officer. They first killed Sanjay, then raped and killed Geeta. Ranga and Billa were sentenced to death and were executed on January 31, 1982. The body of the siblings were found in advanced stage of decomposition and so the evidence of sexual assault could not be gathered. However, forensic evidence such as hair, fingerprints, and bloodstains were found. The siblings were awarded the Kirti Chakra on April 5, 1981, and two bravery awards 'Sanjay Chopra Award' and 'Geeta Chopra Award' were instituted in their honour.

8. Delhi biryani murder case

A video of a 16-year-old boy stabbing another boy in Delhi's Welcome colony went viral on social media. The allegedly drunk 16-yr-old stabbed the victim 55 times with a knife. According to the Delhi police the victim was attacked over money for biryani. The perpetrator had asked money from the teen who refused. The accused strangled the victim and killed him by stabbing him in the face, neck and below the eyes. CCTV footage showed that the perpetrator, in an inebriated state, dancing around the dead body. He was arrested immediately by the Delhi police.

Should You Need Me: 4 - Let you let me down

You've got to be shitting me. What did I do to deserve this? Anthony conceded that, actually, there were plenty of things that he’d done for which this would be a fitting punishment. Still, here he was, minding his own damn business, supporting Benedict like a good big brother, when who should he see but Kate Sharma. In an art gallery. Looking fucking amazing, even from this distance. The gallery space wasn't particularly small. He could avoid her.

He should avoid her.

Because that night, after their ill-advised lunch, he found himself lying in bed, stroking himself to the idea of Kate moving above him, lips parted and cheeks flushed.

He wanted Kate, and he couldn't have her. Anthony was not in the business of chasing unavailable women. So, he decided the best course of action was to cut out early. He just needed to find Ben– What the fuck?! Why is Ben talking to Kate?!

Anthony wasn't even aware of how fast he was moving as he approached Benedict and Kate. He caught his brother’s eye first.

"Ant! I ran into one of your clients. I believe you know Kate."

Not nearly as well as I'd like to.

Kate turned around and Anthony had to actively stop his jaw from dropping open, now that he was seeing her up close. She was wearing yellow high waisted trousers that flared over her hips perfectly, paired with a black, corset style crop top. She wore her hair up for their appointments. He'd never seen it down like this, black curls framing her face and shoulders.

"Kate. Hi."

"Hey, Anthony. You should be very proud of your brother's work."

"Oh, I am. He's very talented."

Despite referencing Benedict, Anthony and Kate kept their eyes on each other, which was becoming the norm. It's becoming a problem. This is why you should leave. Right now. 

Out of the corner of his eye, Anthony caught the grin Benedict was trying and failing to hide behind his champagne flute.

"Have you been here long?" Anthony asked, trying his best to ignore his brother. He wanted to ask if she came here alone, but was able to resist. He did take a quick look around, though. Not that he even knew what Tom looked like.

"Yeah. I'm about to head out, actually." She flipped her hair back on one side, revealing one bare shoulder. Anthony's jaw clenched.

"I'll, uh… Can I walk you out?"

Kate seemed surprised at the offer and Anthony was about to take it back when she responded, "Yes, thank you. It was very nice to meet you, Benedict."

Benedict took Kate's proffered hand. "Thanks for coming, Kate. I really enjoyed talking to you. Oh, and best wishes on your upcoming wedding!"

Anthony's smile tightened at the mention of Kate's wedding. Why are you doing this to yourself, mate?

Kate and Anthony walked side by side towards the exit. He chanced putting a hand on Kate's back, not too low, and she relaxed against it. Good–No, bad. Very bad. 

"Seeing you tonight was a pleasant surprise."

"Is it weird that I didn't tell you I was coming? I assumed you two were related, so you might be here." Kate pushed her hair off her shoulders again.

She really needs to stop doing that. 

"No, no." Anthony looked down at his shoes. "It's not like we're–"

When he looked back up, the expression on Kate's face stopped him. She looked…disappointed? What did she think they were? Friends? What did she want them to be?

"It wasn't weird," Anthony reached out and touched one of those distracting as hell shoulders. His touch lingered for much longer than he intended. Like, way too long. Stop touching her, you fucking creep. And he did, but not before sliding his hand down her arm as it fell away. And Kate let him do it.

Anthony cleared his throat as Kate shook her head, as if they were both trying to refocus.

"You have a good night, Kate."

"You, too." She looked like she wanted to say more, but instead she just turned and walked toward the car park.

Anthony was frozen as he watched her walk away. That is, until she turned back and waved when she saw he was still there. As he waved back, he heard the telltale chuckle of a smug Benedict Bridgerton.

"Don't fucking say anything," Anthony warned before he even turned around. 

"So, she's the reason you've been on such a bender." Benedict popped a canapé into his mouth and grinned as he chewed inelegantly. 

"Fuck off. I haven't been on a bender."

"She's a client."

"Yes."

"A bridal client."

"Ben…"

"I thought you didn't date clients. Or engaged women."

"Well, I'm not dating her, then, am I?" Anthony all but growled.

"And that's got you in a tailspin."

"I'm fine," Anthony muttered, looking back in the direction of the car park, as if Kate would still be there. 

"Clearly," Benedict said as he rolled his eyes.

Anthony took a few breaths before clapping Benedict's shoulders. "Listen, go enjoy the rest of your night. You really are quite talented and you deserve to bask in that. I'll resume my telling you to fuck off tomorrow. Good night, brother."

"Katie?"

"Hm?"

"No need to think that hard about what time the ceremony should start, babe."

Kate forced a laugh and avoided The Mums' gazes –like she had been all night–as she put her head on Tom's shoulder.

"Sorry. You're right."

"You tired?"

Sure, that works. "Yeah, I am. I think we should head home."

"OK, let's do that, then." Tom kissed Kate's temple before he got up and moved to the other side of the table to give Kaveri and Mary each a kiss and a hug. "Dinner was amazing, as always."

"Oh, thank you, Tom." Mary patted him on the cheek.

Kate felt her mother's eyes on her as she got up to join Tom.

"Chellam?"

Fuck. Kate turned and didn’t even try to smile this time. There was no point. "Yes, Amma?"

"I need to talk to you before you leave. We won't be long, Tom."

Kate felt herself being led into the living room as Mary made easy conversation with Tom.

Her mother sat her down on the couch.

"Kathani, what is going on? It hurts my heart to see you like this. Talk to me, please. Do you want to stay here tonight?"

Kate shook her head, causing a couple of tears to fall. Kaveri wiped them away as she put their foreheads together.

"I need to go home with Tom, Amma. I have to."

Kaveri sat back and studied Kate's face. She nodded her head sagely. She understood. "It's OK, Kate."

"I'm afraid. I'm… so scared, Amma." Kate's whisper was barely audible.

"But you're going to do what you need, what Tom needs, anyway, because you're brave, Chellam. You're the bravest person I know."

Kate wanted to believe that so badly. She had made up her mind. She was certain that she was making a terrible mistake. Because of it, she was going to lose her best friend, but there was nothing she could do about that now. The damage had been done.

Tom wrapped his arms around Kate from behind as they entered his house. The ride home had been completely silent. Kate had closed her eyes and pretended she was falling asleep.

"Are we just going to bed, or are we turning on the telly and falling asleep on the couch?"

"Let's, um… Let's sit on the couch." Kate was doing a piss-poor job of keeping her voice light, but what was the point? Another couple of minutes of keeping Tom in the dark?

"Alright…" Tom sat down and tried to pull Kate onto his lap, but she backed away and sat next to him. "You're scaring me, Kate."

Kate gulped. "I'm sorry."

Tom turned ashen. "You're sorry for scaring me or for whatever you're about to say?"

She knew he knew the answer to that.

"I can't marry you, Tom. We shouldn't get married."

Tom released a heavy breath like he'd been holding it. Kate tentatively put her hand on his. Not only did he let her,  thank fuck, he put his other hand on top of hers.

"OK."

 "I love you so much, Tom."

"But you aren't in love with me."

Kate winced. He looked up at her.

"It's a cliche, but that's what the problem is, isn’t it?"

Kate willed herself not to look away from him. "Yes."

"Were you ever? In love with me?" Tom's voice was low and even, gentler than Kate felt she deserved. 

Just answer his question. He deserves the truth. Tell him the truth, finally. 

"No."

The gut punch was written all over Tom's face. Kate knew it was coming but felt utterly unprepared for it. She didn't know what to do now.

"I said yes because…" God, it sounded so dumb now that she was going to say it to Tom. "Because you're the best person I know. You've been a part of my family for so long. And… It made perfect sense."

Tom laughed, though there was no humour in it. "'It made sense,' did it? Well, I'm glad it made sense. Like a good business plan."

"Tom, I'm so sorry."

"I believe you. Um… Fuck, I don't know what I'm supposed to say."

"You don't have to–"

"Is this where I'm supposed to fight for you? Do people actually do that? Fight for someone who just said they don't want them?"

Kate gripped his hand. "Tom, I know I can't ask anything of you. I fucked this up. I… I can't imagine how you feel."

"Be thankful for that, Katie."

Jesus Christ. How do I make this better? 

"Is the 'I hope we can still be friends' cliche coming up next?" Tom had stopped looking at her, and had found a spot past her to stare at.

"I don't want to lose you, Tom," Kate whispered.

“Right. I love you, Katie. But I’m also actually in love with you, so… I don’t know what that means for us. For me and your family.”

I’m never going to see him again. Kate let the tears fall, opting to continue to hang on to Tom’s hands for as long as he would let her rather than worry about wiping her tears away.

“You should go, Katie. I’ll, um… We’ll figure out how to deal with everything. I guess I should be glad we didn’t get very far with the planning.”

Kate barely had a voice when she said, “OK.” She moved to get off the couch when Tom suddenly pulled her into a hug. They both cried as they held each other. Tom was the one to back out of the embrace, even pushing Kate back a little before he turned to look at the floor and waited.

Kate didn’t know what to expect. Tom asked her to leave, so she knew that that’s what she would do next. But she wanted to stay. She wanted to sit with him until she knew they would eventually be OK. It was selfish as hell. Maybe they would never be OK. And Kate had no right to a guarantee that they would be, even if Tom was able to give it.

The house was deafeningly silent as Kate walked towards the front door, taking Tom’s grandmother’s ring off and leaving it for him on her way out.

BIOGRAPHY

claudius was descended from roman generals who still lived in the area and he was a warlord who wanted to maintain control over the city he was born in, venice. he met aisha, a beautiful woman who landed on the city's ports and quickly got the attention of the local population- including claudius, who knew he needed to have her to himself. their romance quickly picked up and she would give him four sons.

little did claudius know was that his wife and sons were all djinn. as their oldest son, lucretius, began to develop his own gifts she was forced to confess the truth. claudius saw this as a net positive and used her gifts to help him maintain control of the city and its ports. as he grew more powerful and ruled over venice, his relationship with aisha began to wain.

he'd spend less time with her or their sons and soon began to resent them. he didn't like aisha trying to teach them about her culture and where she came from. when lucretius was sixteen years old, aisha caught claudius in bed with one of his hand maidens and was furious. she decided to punish her husband by making him hallucinate all sorts of things until he was deemed mad by his own guards and locked away in a dungeon.

this was when lucretius began his rule over the city with his mother for the next decade, though whispers began to spread that they were witches who poisoned claudius and explained why aisha hadn't aged in nearly thirty years. lucretius and his family fled the city in the night, settign their home on fire before they took a ship and headed out east.

lucretius spent some time in constantinople where he was a loyal advisor to the emperor at the time and even his lover. the other advisors swore lucretius was poisoning the emperor and attempted to imprison him, though he always slipped through their fingers. he'd return to the city years later when the emperor was on his death bed to say his final goodbye.

he spent the next several centuries traveling across the middle east and asia, discovering more of his own gifts and becoming stronger. him and his brothers would go their own ways around this time, one brother ended up in russia while another brother ended up india and another stayed in egypt with lucretius for some time.

around the 15th century, lucretius had made connections with the ottoman empire. he was a lover to the sultan and although he encouraged peace with the byzantinians, the sultan refused. thanks to his extensive knowledge of constantinople and how it was built, he helped his lover invade and take it over. like his mother, lucretius would eventually feel used by this lover who slowly lost interest in the djinn once he got what he wanted. lucretius would make the sultan begin to hallucinate and be deemed to mad to rule, with one of his closest generals killing the guard.

once again lucretius spent the next few centuries never staying anywhere for too long and coming to truly resent humanity, who he felt only cared about him for his gifts. he'd spend some time back on the italian peninsula during the peak of the renaissance, becoming the muse for a handful of artists who would gain notority with time.

the djinn was an advisor for the tudor dynasty briefly and some have sworn they saw him in france during their revolution, even believing he may have been one of the reasons to cause the madness but he swears he was back in india at this time.

lucretius would end up in the new world, wondering if he'd ever find somewhere he could settle down at. this was when he found what would one day be alexandria, a beacon for the supernatural and where he met other djinn like himself along with creatures he had never known existed.

building various businesses in town, including a popular nightclub that has gained a notorious reputation, lucretius isn't the most approachable or heartwarming and tends to keep to himself unless you have something he wants.

A Jihad for Love (preceded by a short film called In the Name of Allah) is an award-winning international documentary on Homosexuality & Islam.It took total six years to make this groundbreaking documentary.Parvez Sharma took the risk to film this documentary in most dangerous country (like Islamic Republic of Iran,Iraq, Saudi Arabia,Pakistan,Egypt).Homosexuality is a punishable crime in most Muslim World.

The work that Sharma started with this film has become a staple in many books on Islam and at U.S. University libraries.The website Faith in Equality put it at number 9 in a list of LGBT films about faith.IMDb rates the film at 13 on its list of 58 titles under the category of "Best documentaries on religion, spirituality & cults".The film first premiered at the TIFF in 2007, and has been screened to great acclaim at several film festivals around the world.The film went on to win 15 other international awards.

Plot

At starting it shows a glimpse of Islam across the globe.The film first featured Hendrick Muhsin, a South African,Pakistani Gay & Muslim.He is also the first Out Gay Imam of Africa.Filmmaker Parvez got into the deep of Hendicks's personal life struggles,his understanding of Islam & reconciliation of intersecting identities.

Mazen, an Egyptian effeminate muslim was arrested in 2001, in a gay nightclub named Queen Boat.He was beaten,forced to stand trial twice on "debauchery" charges & sentenced to a total of 4 years in prison, where he was raped.He eventually moved to Paris.Mazen also has left his families & friends in Egypt.

Sana is a Black Lesbian refugee, & a victim of FGM.She has a deeper understanding of Islam & told Parvez that Queerness is not against Islam.Sana didn't have any kind of sexual relation with any women.But she had intimate loving relations with women.Like others, she came to France as a refugee.Sana befriend with Maryam & Mazen.

Maryam is Moroccan-born queer womxn who lives in Paris.Her girlfriend Maha lives in Egypt.Both lovers met each other on Bint-al Nas - a meeting site for Arab LBTQ womxn.Maryam still believes that she deserves punishment for her lesbian sexual relationship.Both have survived abusive marriages and can only share their love for each other in private.Maryam & Maha go on a shared journey of search and discovery of female homosexuality.In Al-Azhar, they discover an old bookstore where they find a copy of the Fiqh al-Sunnah(The Laws of the Prophet).In the heart of an ancient mosque in the Citadel,they discover beautiful Islamic calligraphy as they declare their impossible love for each other.

Amir, an Iranian gay shia who has respect for Imam Hosseini.He sacrificed his life for Allah & reconciling his muslim faith.While in Iran, he was persecuted under the charges of illicit sexual conduct,illicit mannerism & received 100 lashes.After being brutally beaten and tortured in the police custody.The judge also threatened Amir that he should be punished by stoning.However he was sentenced to flogging.He told Sharma that Allah helped him to escape this traumatic situation.He fled to Turkey as soon as well.There he met 3 gay refugees - Arsham,Payam,Mojtaba.Mojtaba, another (Persian) gay muslim who ran away from Iran,due to his same sex marriage ceremony in 2005.

Ferda & Kiymet are a happy couple in Turkiye.Kiymet belongs from a conservative family.In her early Kiymet's marriage was fixed with a man.Kiymet's marriage ended up at divorce.Then she found Ferda, her soulmate.Ferda's mom is very supportive & tolerant of sexuality.Ferda is a devout sufi queer muslim, who honors Rumi - a prominent sufi icon for both LGBTQ+ & Straight Muslims.

Ahsan & Qasim are queer platonic friends.Ahsan is a Sunni Muslim & Qasim is a Shia Muslim.Both men, belongs from poor backgrounds do not adopt the western peronae of ‘gay’ and instead rely on vernacular terms.Ahsan & Qasim are part of transvestite,transgender community called Zenana,Kothi in Northern India.Most of these community hide themselves from public.Ahsan,Qasim find a safe space in his community.While Qasim is struggling with his sexuality in heteronormative society.

The filmmaker also documented the diverse tolerance of sexuality in sufi traditions (Pakistan,India & Turkey).

Production

Bismillah (In the name of Allah) was considered as an early working title for this documentary.Among muslims,the word Bismillah is very auspicious & used before beginning actions,speech,writing.But the tittle was not considered as the final title of this film due to controversy.

A Jihad for Love is produced by Halal Films, in association with the Sundance Documentary Film Fund,Channel 4 (UK),ZDF (Germany),Arte (France-Germany),Logo (US) & SBS Australia.The director & producer Parvez Sharma & co-producer Sandi Dubowski raised more than a million dollars over a 6 years period to make the film.

In an interview with The NY Times,Parvez Sharma said that he "would shoot touristy footage on the first 15 minutes & the last 15 minutes of a tape", with interviews for documentary in between, to avoid having his footage seized at customs.He compiled 400 hours of footage from a dozen countries ranging from Iraq to Pakistan to the UK.The nature of the work placed him at considerable personal risk.He adopted hardcore guerrilla film-making tactics,pretending to be a tourist in one country,a worker for an AIDS charity in another country.Wherever he went,he asked his queer friends to keep copies of footage and destroy the tapes once he had successfully smuggled the masters out of the country.

During his filmmaking Parvez traveled several countries including Pakistan, Iraq, India, Bangladesh, Egypt, USA, UK, Turkey, France, Saudi Arabia, South Africa,[...].

Interviews

In an interview with NY Times magazine,Parvez Sharma said,"Being gay and Muslim myself,I knew that this film had to be about us all coming out— as Muslims. It's about claiming the Islam that has been denied to us." With a target audience of "faithful Muslims," he undertook a variety of outreach tactics, including leafleting mosques,blanketing MySpace,screening in Astoria for 15 key progressive Muslim leaders.In an interview to Der Spiegel, Sharma explained the significance of the title: "I'm not looking at jihad as battle.I'm looking at the greater jihad in Islam, which is the jihad as the struggle with the self.I also thought it was really compelling to take a word that only has one connotation for most -- to take that, reclaim it and put it in the same phrase as love,which is universal.I really think it explains it very well.

A Jihad for Love first premiered in Toronto International Film Festival(TIFF) in September 2007.At its premier,the director was given a security guard for safety reasons.After this film festival A Jihad for Love got huge applaud internationally.A Jihad for Love film premiered as the opening film of Panorama Documente of the Berlin Film Festival in February 2008.

The film was screened in The Rio Film Festival,Brazil on September 2007,Morelia Film Festival,Mexico, on October 2007,The Sheffield DocFest on November 2007,London Gay & Lesbian Film Festival on March 2008,Melbourne International Film Festival on July 2008,Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival on March 2008,etc.A Jihad for Love's first premier in African continent was The Out in Africa Film Festival in Johannesburg and Cape Town,November 2007. On April,2008 A Jihad for Love film was successfully screened at Istanbul International Film Festival.It was the first time that the film allowed to screen in a muslim-majority country.Film also screened in Q! Film Festival of Indonesia.Although singapore banned the film from festival in 2008 due to its sensitive subject.

Popularity

A Jihad for Love film's sale and broadcast on NDTV, South Asia's largest network in 2008 would have a "remarkable" impact on this LGBTQ cause. "NDTV's broadcast has in effect made the film available to over one billion viewers in India,Bangladesh,Pakistan, & large portions of the Middle East and Africa.The various distributors and their Total Rating Points in European television, the Indian/South-Asian sale with its claimed footprint of 15 billion viewers, the theatrical release & the purportedly large numbers of Netflix viewers made the filmmakers and the TRP experts arrive at a number of 8 million total viewers calculated over a period of four years for this documentary.

International Muslim Dialogue Project

Immediately after the film's theatrical launch around the USA,Parvez & Sandi launched the International Muslim Dialogue Project on 2008.The aim of the project was to organize screenings of the film in Muslim Capitals.Sharma called it the "Underground Network Model" of film distribution.He invented this model sending unmarked DVD's of the film with friends & colleagues to Muslim capitals across the world with full permission to sell pirated copies.Some of the boldest were Beirut,Cairo,Karachi,eight cities in Indonesia & Kuala Lumpur

The film was screened privately screened in Iran,Palestine,Bangladesh and Somalia.
