Amhi Koli Amcha Maharashtra - Koli Dance
Yes, if you are in the land of Maharashtra then amidst the “Kasa Kaay” and the Puran polis and Batata Vadas, you would surely not have missed hearing about the Kolis. These fishermen communities in Maharashtra have time and again been a major feature of the culture of the city. With the best traditions and the most lively lifestyle, the Kolis have a great culture too. The Koli dance is one such important activity of the Kolis which is a great part of Maharashtrian culture.
This dance is performed by both men and women. They divide themselves into groups and the fishermen are the main feature of the dance. They stand in two rows and have oars in their hands. The dancers have great unity and show the rowing of a boat. The fisherwomen come in the opposite row and dance with their hands linked to the arms of the advancing men. The formations separate and then come back and then again divert. This constant change of formations is what makes the Koli dance very unique. The movements and actions revolve around showing the waves, the casing of nets, and the breakers moving from one cliff to the other thus creatively depicting their daily life.
Historically these Kolis are people who come from a group of Indo-Aryan people who are natives of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and other areas. All the Kolis were originally Hindus. Many of them took to Buddhism and many others to other religions. Under the rule of King Ashoka, the Mauryan Empire flourished and so did Buddhism. During this time, the Kolis got influenced by this religion.
Koli means a spider and the one who weaves the net is thus called a Koli. The fishermen weave this net to trap the fish. The fisherman makes the net and also uses it as his daily profession. Believed to have descended from the Black Dwarf that came in King Vena’s body, they are a great community today in India and contribute greatly to Indian culture.
Kolis Dance is normally for festivals like Narali Punaw, the Shimoga, and other festivals and celebrations.
Thus this Maharashtra dance has many varieties and involves many kinds of variations in the patterns of the dance. These are performed across the country and the main effects are beautiful to see and lovely to experience. The singular movement of the oar-holding men, the lilting music, and the beauty and grace of women in tango with them is what make the dance very graceful.
With popular local music, the Koli Dance also recently became a favorite when US President Barack Obama and his wife danced to the tune of the Koli Dance. Very uniquely and colorfully dressed, the Koli men wear a lungi in the coastal style with a cap on their heads. The women wear a saree in the “nav vari” Maharashtrian style. The women dressed in finery and their nose rings or the nation give the impression of an actual boat being rowed in the ocean or sea. The illusion that is created is what makes the Koli Dance so popular.

Farmers may block Delhi-Jaipur expressway on Saturday, 2 days before protest intensifies
NEW DELHI: Though the protesting farmers had earlier announced to intensify their agitation against the three farm laws from December 14, they are likely to do it two days earlier on Saturday itself by blocking the Delhi-Jaipur expressway. This, even as the government said there was no need for the farmers to announce fresh stir as talks with them were continuing. On Wednesday, farmer leaders rejected a government proposal to amend the new agri laws, and announced they would intensify their agitation by blocking the Jaipur-Delhi and the Delhi-Agra expressways by Saturday, and escalating it to a nationwide protest on December 14. The All India Kisan Sabha Punjab general secretary Major Singh Punawal said on Friday that the Jaipur-Delhi Expressway will be blocked by December 12. This comes after the sixth round of talks between the government and farm union leaders, which was scheduled for Wednesday morning, was cancelled. The farmer leaders have been adamant on their demand to scrap the laws, which they say will lead to dismantling of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism and mandis that ensure earning. The government has been defending these laws, saying they will benefit the farmers in the long run and raise their incomes. Meanwhile, agriculture minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Friday said some “anti-social elements” were conspiring to spoil the atmosphere of the peasant’s agitation under the guise of farmers and appealed the protesting farming community to be vigilant against their platform being misused. He also said the government was sensitive towards farmers and is in discussion with them and their representatives to resolve their concerns. “A proposal to resolve the farmers’ objection has also been sent to the farmers union and the government is ready for further discussion,” Tomar tweeted. Tagging a media report about posters coming up at farmers’ Tikri Border protest site demanding release of some activists arrested under various charges, Tomar said, “Anti-social elements are conspiring to spoil the atmosphere of the peasant movement under the guise of farmers.” “I appeal to the peasant brothers to be vigilant and not provide their platform to such anti-social elements,” he added. Thousands of farmers have been staying put at Delhi border points- Singhu, Tikri, Ghazipur and Chilla (Delhi-Noida) — for nearly two weeks against the Centre’s new farm laws. At least five rounds of formal talks have taken place between the central government and representatives of thousands of farmers, mainly from Punjab and Haryana, but the deadlock has continued with the unions sticking to their main demand for the repeal of the three contentious laws and repeatedly rejecting the centre’s offer to make some changes in law and give written assurances or clarifications on few issues such as MSP and mandi systems. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi attacked the government, alleging that it wants the income of farmers in the country to be as low as that earned by those in Bihar. The former party chief cited a media report that claimed that an agricultural household in Punjab earns the highest in a year, while it was lowest in Bihar. “The farmer wants his income to be as much as that of farmers of Punjab. The Modi government wants the income of all farmers of the country to be as much as that of Bihar farmers,” Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi. In a related development, the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab will hold separate state level protests on December 14 to express solidarity with the farmers. Both the parties said they stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the protesting farmers and will leave no stone unturned in getting their voices heard. Punjab Congress president Sunil Jakhar said on Friday that his party will hold a large demonstration at Shambu (inter-state) border on December 14 in support of the farmers. AAP state unit president and Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann also announced his party’s whole-hearted support to the call given by the protesting farmers to intensify their agitation and escalate it to a nationwide protest on December 14. In a fresh development, Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait said if the government wanted to talk to farmer leaders that should be formally conveyed like in previous occasions, said, asserting that anything less than scrapping of the new agri-laws would not be accepted. “They (government) should first tell us when and where they want to meet us as they did for previous formal talks. If they invite us for talks, we will discuss that with our coordination committee and then take a decision,” Tikait said. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of adopting a “heartless attitude” towards the demands of farmers and said the global response to their protest has “deeply” hurt the image of India worldwide. His party has been backing the farmers’ protest against the Centre’s three new farm laws. “The BJP government is ignoring farmers by adopting a heartless attitude towards the justified demands of the agitators shivering on the streets. The global response that is coming to this has deeply hurt the democratic image of India worldwide. The BJP government should stop exploiting those who feed us,” Yadav said in a tweet. The Samajwadi Party (SP) president has asked party workers to organise peaceful sit-ins at district headquarters on December 14 in support of the farmers’ agitation, a party statement said. On the other hand, the BJP has decided to hold nationwide programmes to highlight the benefits of the three farm laws. With some farmer unions intensifying their protest against the central government over the recent agri reforms, the BJP has decided to hold nationwide programmes, including ‘chaupal’ in rural areas, to highlight the benefits of three farm laws. Party sources said events, including press conferences and public programmes, will be held in most of the over 700 districts of the country in this regard. The development comes amid opposition parties’ united support to the farmers’ protest and attack on the Narendra Modi government over the issue. The BJP has accused its rivals of misleading the farmers over the farm reforms and has alleged that opposition parties have been inciting them for selfish political interests.

BFAR-Bicol issues red tide alert in Sorsogon Bay, Masbate
#PHnews: BFAR-Bicol issues red tide alert in Sorsogon Bay, Masbate
LEGAZPI CITY – The gathering, selling, and transport of all types of shellfish from the Sorsogon Bay and the municipal waters of Mandaon and Milagros in Masbate have been banned after samples taken from these bodies of water turned positive for the red tide-causing planktons called pyrodinium bahamense, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) in Bicol announced on Monday.
BFAR-Bicol spokesperson Nonie Enolva, in an interview, said their office issued a local red tide warning advisory because the Nov. 27 red tide bulletin by their central office did not include the Sorsogon Bay and Masbate yet on the list of bodies of water that are positive for red tide organisms.
“Based on the latest sampling from Sorsogon Bay, it was found out that the said area is now positive for red tide. We earnestly advise fishers not to gather and sell shellfishes such as green mussel (tahong), carpet shell (baduy), pen shell (baloko), blood cockle (piyong and takal), and other shellfishes (surusalapi, kagot, punaw, etc.) in the area,” BFAR-Bicol said in its advisory.
The bureau said it will issue another advisory by Tuesday.
“The sampling that we conducted last week confirmed that red tide causing planktons are present in Sorsogon Bay and Milagros and Mandaon waters. Though we are still waiting for the confirmatory result on Monday or Tuesday, we decided to issue already this local red tide advisory. We do not want to take chances,” Enolva told the Philippine News Agency.
She said resurfacing of red tide-causing planktons is suspected to have been triggered by the presence of agricultural waste and other waste sources, and the remobilization of the sea beds in these areas due to strong currents spawned by the typhoons that hit Bicol in the past weeks.
She explained that a red tide phenomenon occurs when there is a harmful algal bloom in a particular body of water.
“These wastes serve as nutrients for the red tide causing planktons that result to the blooming off harmful algae,” Enolva added.
She said that their office received unconfirmed reports of possible red tide poisoning in Milagros and Mandaon that resulted in the death of a resident.
“Some residents in Milagros, Masbate had suffered food poisoning and led to the eventual demise of one. As of posting, we are still waiting for the official report from our Provincial Fisheries Office,” Enolva said.
Due to this report, she said they included the municipal waters of Milagros and Mandaon in the red tide warning.
Enolva said intake of shellfish contaminated with red tide could result in numbness of the face particularly around the mouth, dizziness, pricking pain, weakness of the body, faster heart rate, difficulty in swallowing and breathing, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. (PNA)

#PHinfo: BFAR Bicol raises red tide warning in Sorsogon, Masbate bays
LEGAZPI CITY, December 7 (PIA) – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Bicol warned the public to avoid consumption, gathering and selling of shellfishes from Sorsogon Bay and Mandaon Bay in Masbate province due to red tide.
Ms. Nonie Enolva, BFAR-Bicol spokesperson said that based from the latest sampling from Sorsogon Bay, it was found out that the area is positive from paralytic shellfish toxin, mostly known as red tide.
“We earnestly advise fishers not to gather and sell shellfishes such as green mussel (tahong), carpet shell (baduy), pen shell (baloko), blood cockle (piyong and takal), oyster (talaba) and other shellfishes (surusalapi, kagot, tikhan, bukawel, ugpan, punaw, etc.) in the area, Enolva narrated.
Some residents also in Milagros town in Masbate province have suffered food poisoning after eating shellfish, causing one resident to demise, Enolva disclosed.
“Some residents in Milagros, Masbate had suffered food poisoning and led to eventual demise of one. As of posting, we are still awaiting for the official report from our Provincial Fisheries Office. The BFAR 5 thru regional director Nelson Bien issued local advisories for Sorsogon Bay and the Municipal Waters of Mandaon, Masbate,” she said.
Enolva also warned the public to refrain from gathering, selling and eating of “alamang” or krill from areas contaminated with red tide. “Fish, crab and squid can be eaten but all entrails must be removed and washed thoroughly before cooking. The BFAR and LGU continuously monitor these areas to safeguard public health and protect the shellfish industry,” she said. (PIA5-NNLuces)
