The Origin Of Some Spooky Halloween Traditions
Trick or Treat
This Halloween tradition is atributted to the Roman Soul's Day Holiday, where residents would knock on the doors of the wealthy and offer a prayer for their dead, in exchange for a round, spiced treat called soul cake. This took twist in Ireland and Scotland, when kids in costumes started to get treats in exchange for singing, reciting poems, or performing tricks. Ireland and Scotland peaople in US introduce the tradition to America.
Jack-o’-lanterns
This tradition started in Irish who used the pumpskins to scare people.
Black and Orange Decorations
The custom can be traced back to the 2000-year-old Celtic festival Samhain. Every November 1 in what is now modern-day Ireland, it marked the end of the harvest season and the start of winter. Black represented the "death" of summer, while orange symbolized the autumn harvest season.
FUN FACT: Most given candy in the USA is M and M's, and less given candy is Sour patch kids
