Secondary Research: Lesbian Pulp Fiction
Covers of Lesbian Pulp fiction (popularised during the cold war) the books were targeted at men and are just one example of fetishisation of lesbians throughout history. During my research I found the word "Sin" to be frequent in many of the titles, only pushing the idea that homosexuality was wrong and shameful.
Despite the negative connections of lesbian pulp fiction, I love the vintage art style and I want to take inspiration from this and use it in a satirical piece
Images from https://pulpcovers.com/tag/lesbians/
During the 1950s, during the cold war, the concept of a nuclear family was heavily promoted to fight against communism. During this time american society saw a rise in anxieties regarting gender norms and sexuality, homosexuality was demonised and seen as a threat.
At this time there was a rise of erotic lesbian fiction aimed at straight men. "The lesbian" was an immediate danger to society and lesbianism was framed to be a disease, but crucially, one that could be cured by a good time with the right man
‘the lesbian’ was constructed as an opportunity for men to prove themselves.
Stories of lesbian orgies, threesomes and lesbian nymphomaniacs were extremely popular amongst heterosexual men during this period. Within these novels, lesbians are presented as deviants, yet deviants who are often regained by heterosexual, familial norms after experiencing life-changing heterosexual sex.
None of these books ended with the women being both happy and homosexual, either they chose to return to the heteronormative idea and end up with a man, or if they remained a lesbian they suffered a tragic ending of suicide, insanity etc

100 Pulp Cover Redraws #1: Women of Shadows
Starting a new side-series where I redraw old pulp novel and magazine covers in my style. Starting off here with a VERY simple one.
Albeit, I couldnt get the fonts right for the text, so I ended up just going for a similar vibe and doing my own thing with it. From the original by Enoch Bolles, as sourced here: https://pulpcovers.com/women-of-shadows/

Found a great web page for old pulp covers. This is one of the funniest. The worst depiction of Tarzan I have ever seen. Must have come straight off photo ref of the artist or a model friend. Tarzan with semi bulgey forearms and ample loin cloth. https://pulpcovers.com/tag/robertmaguire/
