Day 15 in New Zealand: Taieri Gorge Scenic Railway
Despite the rain, we still had gorge-ous (see what I did there?) scenery! Today was our final day; tomorrow we fly home.
This morning I did a little shopping and then met Wife at the old train station from the gold rush days. It’s a beautiful building--a little like a gingerbread house--and only serves tourist trains run by a private company: the Taieri Gorge line (no longer needed commercially, but scenic enough to attract sightseers) and a line that goes up the coast a bit.
Most of the cars of the train are basically antiques from the 1930s, with wooden walls and low-tech windows that can slide down a few inches to allow for photography of the landscape. There’s also an open car without glass on the sides, though it still has a roof (helpful, given the rain), and little outdoor platforms at the end of each car that you walk across to go from car to car but that you can also stand on for fresh air and photography purposes.
Our seats were assigned in one of the old cars, which was nicely atmospheric, and the commentator (who may have also been driving the train?) was pretty funny. The train passed through some farmland first (we saw livestock and pukekos!), but eventually went through a tunnel and emerged in Taieri Gorge. The track went over several viaducts and bridges and through several tunnels, most of which had been dug by hand and were barely any bigger than the train. One of the bridges was a shared rail-and-road bridge, without separate lanes for the two types of vehicle. The train always has the right of way!
We had beautiful views of rivers and hills covered with pines (introduced for timber) or native trees and shrubs, with an occasional sheep or goat and, once in a while, a building. There were some larches at one point, which are very odd looking trees at this time of year. It’s autumn in New Zealand, and larches are deciduous conifers--so they were all yellow! There was one spectacular section near the end with steep walls of rock on the other side of the river.
The final stop was at Pukerangi, where they brought the locomotive around to the other end of the train so we could return on the same track, facing the other way. The round trip took about 4-4.5 hours.
We walked home in the rain (VERY steep uphill), working up such a sweat I had to change my clothes. We drove back into town for dinner.
I have packed most of my dirty laundry but not many of my clean clothes yet. Wife’s luggage was over the weight limit on the way here and she bought a bottle of wine to bring home, so I’m taking it in my luggage, in exchange for which she is taking a bunch of bulky but light things of mine, which will hopefully make enough space for me to fit everything in. I’ve only thrown away 2 pairs of socks, and the suitcases were pretty much stuffed full on the way here, and I’ve bought several things! I will also wear my [new] hiking shoes on the plane, as packing my little sneakers instead should free up a little space, and the hiking shoes will need to be washed at Customs.
Tomorrow we have to leave at 7:15am to drive to the airport, fuel up the rental car, return it, and get on our flight. So I’d better finish packing and head to bed.

Train, Steep Road & Penguins - 3 April 2019
We drove into Dunedin this morning to take a scenic train ride: the Taieri Gorge Railway. The return journey took 4 hours from the main railway station in Dunedin. The journey goes to Pukerangi and back. The engine and rolling stock for us was old but comfortable and provided a good view. We were blessed with a glorious day of sunshine today, even though there was a chill in the air first thing. Here is the train:
The train journey took us through the town and then outskirts of Dunedin and then we travelled north-east. The scenery became more dramatic the further into the gorge we travelled. Much of the area is only accessible by train and of course being a gorge, the track followed the river.
The scenery was lovely and the line has some great engineering and we crossed more than one viaduct as shown below.
On return to Dunedin, we had a late lunch before driving to a specific road: Baldwin Street in Dunedin. We were visiting the steepest road in the world! It gets steeper and steeper! At its steepest it is under 1 in 3. We walked up the road which is very challenging but manageable as they have put steps in on one pavement. Coming down is fun too as you have to stop yourself going too fast. Apparently there are event races up the hill during the year! Here is Baldwin Road from the base:
While in that specific part of the city we drove up to the Signal Hill lookout. This gave a great view of the city of Dunedin.
We returned to our lodge for a short time after this to ensure we got dressed in thermal layers and waterproof clothing. We had booked an evening wildlife experience from the Albatross Centre which is the end point on the Otago Peninsular. This time it was to see Little Blue Penguins which are only 25cm tall. After a short introductory talk we went in a huge group down to the nearby beach within a conservation area where they have built a wooden platform for viewing which has soft lighting underneath on to the surrounding beach and grass banks. We had to wait until it was completely dark until eventually a penguin emerged from the sea and then rushed across the beach to go into the grassy banks. We saw around 9 penguins come ashore and we were able to observe their journey. It was really fantastic. The penguins are returning to land after a day feeding out at sea. The highlight was when four emerged from the sea as a group and stayed together up the beach and into the grassy banks. Here they are:
The drive back from the penguins to the castle was challenging as there are no street lights and on the Otago Peninsular the roads are narrow and either along the water’s edge or at the top of the cliff. But we got back fine.
