Buck/Eddie - PGish - six years after Eddie moves to texas

They’re sitting on the beach, cooler between them, an umbrella buried in the sand, both of them staring out at the ocean. They’d brought Christopher to Puerto Peñasco so he could meet up with some friends for a last of summer hurrah. Buck shows up in El Paso to visit three or so times a year and one of those trips always includes an extended weekend here. It’s a long drive from El Paso, but it’s worth it. Six years they’ve been doing this now, six years since he’d moved to El Paso to fight his parents for custody of his own son.

“Do you ever think about it?” He can feel Buck’s eyes on him as he waits for an answer.

Eddie knows what he’s talking about without having to ask. It’s always on his mind, he relives it - and the what ifs - at least once a day, but he’s not sure if Buck really wants that truth. Instead he takes a long sip of the beer in his hand to stall and lets his mind drift. 

It had been a near miss between them, during a time they’d both been single back in LA and things had started to look like maybe the time was right for them. It had been an accident really, he'd tripped, Buck had tried to steady him.

They’d been so close, barely an inch of space between them, close enough to feel Buck's breath against his cheek. If Hen hadn’t come around the rig at the exact right–or wrong depending on how you looked at it– second he would have had Buck pressed up against the side of the engine kissing the ever loving hell out of him. But she had, and he hadn't, and later in the bunkroom, in the harsh fluorescent light, they’d laughed it off and moved on.

Eddie hadn't pushed, had figured they still had time to get it right one day. But just a week later Chris had called Eddie in a panic. He had figured out his grandparents were trying to wrench custody of him away from Eddie by insinuating he was an absentee father. It had led to Eddie leaving Los Angeles permanently. It had meant leaving behind what could have been with Buck. 

“All the time.” Eddie finally says, his eyes never leaving the rolling waves as they come in and then recede. The choppy tide feels a lot like the beer currently sloshing around in his stomach as it turns over with nerves. He figures if it’s time to have this conversation he might as well be honest about it. There’s no sense in hiding the fact that he actively mourns the missed opportunity of them.

“Do you ever wonder if…if maybe we gave up too easily?”

And again Eddie thinks, all the fucking time. They definitely gave up too easily, but at the same time he’s not sure how it could have possibly worked with him here and Buck there. Long distance relationships generally never end well, and he would have never asked Buck to leave LA, to leave the only real family he had, to join what had turned into a bitter two year battle with his parents over Christopher. 

Those two years had been brutal, filled with ugly words and even uglier deeds, he’d never thought his mother could be so underhanded. There had been so many accusations thrown at Eddie that he was sure he was going to lose Christopher. Every night when he’d call Buck, he’d close his eyes, and he’d let himself believe for just a moment that Buck’s voice in his ear wasn't eight hundred miles away.

He had pretended that Buck was right there with him, lying next to him in bed, letting Eddie drape himself all over Buck's warmth, he’d imagine the feel of Buck’s fingers sliding up and down his spine as he reassured Eddie that no judge was going to believe all those lies.

Buck’s faith in him, and his love for Christopher, were what kept Eddie sane, kept him in the fight until he finally won. Eddie can’t remember now if he ever thanked Buck for all the unwavering support. Can’t remember if he ever told him how much it really meant to him.

“I know we did.” And maybe that’s not the truth Buck was expecting because when Eddie turns to look at him, there’s shock written in every line of Buck’s face.

“Do you ever wish–”

“Every fucking day, Buck. Where are we going with this? Is this just so we can torture each other with what might have been?” He doesn’t mean to sound so angry but god damnit he regrets not pushing harder every fucking day of his life but it doesn’t matter now. Buck’s with someone else and it’s serious, so that's that.

“No, that's not...I–I want to move. I want to move here.”

“To Mexico?”

“No, you asshole, to El Paso, to you.”

Eddie whips his head around to look at Buck so fast he gets dizzy, “What about Brian?”

Buck ducks his head, red staining his cheeks, “Yeah that didn’t really work out.”

Eddie raises a brow and waits. This is news to him, Buck hasn't said one word about it in the week and half he's already been here.

With a sigh he says, “It’s never a good sign when you wake up out of a wet dream moaning another guy’s name.”

“He was cheating?” Anger fills him at the idea that Brian was just one more in a long line of assholes who took advantage of Buck’s goodness.

“No, uh, not, not him. Me.” Buck squints at him, a full on blush staining his face, and then he shrugs his shoulders a little, Eddie can hear him swallow, "Your name."

Eddie lets the words sink in realizing that maybe Buck is still holding onto that hope too. He thinks about how it could be. Buck in his bed, in his shower, in his life. He thinks about waking up next to him, making coffee together, making dinner together, fighting about the trashy reality TV that Eddie is addicted to that Buck hates but watches anyway just for him. Mostly he thinks about being able to finally touch him, kiss him, whenever he wants to without having to hold back and wonder if it’s the right time or not.

Eddie feels a smile forming, “I don’t know, what if you’re a bad kisser?”

“Oh fuck you.”

Buck gets up and maneuvers himself so that he’s on his knees between Eddie’s legs. Their low slung beach chairs make it easy for Buck to invade his space. He shuffles forward until they’re only inches apart. Buck's board shorts are scratchy against the skin of his inner thighs, it makes the hair stand on end as anticipation swells within him.

“Only one way to find out.” Buck smirks at him before leaning forward to press their lips together in a soft, sweet kiss that Eddie feels all the way down to his toes. After a second he shifts forward, the tip of his tongue pressing against the middle of Buck’s full bottom lip, asking to be let in. Buck sighs, his mouth opening for Eddie without hesitation.

The kiss turns deeper, his tongue sweeping into Buck’s mouth, licking behind his teeth as heat slowly moves through him setting his nerve endings alight. He presses his thumb to the hinge of Buck's jaw, feels it move as the kiss gets wetter, their tongues playing tag. Buck presses him back, his body coming to rest heavily over Eddie's, their bare chests press together, the contact makes Eddie groan softly, his arms draping over Buck's shoulders to pull him closer, his fingers stroking at the back of Buck's neck, fingers playing in the soft, downy hair at his nape, it makes Buck shiver against him.

A high pitched shriek startles them apart and they both swivel their heads to see a little girl running down the beach giggling, her mother hot on her heels calling her name in that exasperated, filled with love way that only a parent understands.

Eddie kisses the corner of Buck's mouth, “I guess that was okay.”

Buck’s smile is wide as he disentangles himself and moves back to his own chair, “Are we finally going to do this?”

Eddie reaches an open hand out to Buck. Buck’s fingers slot through his, their palms pressing together, “Yeah, I think it’s time, don’t you?”

Bringing the back of Eddie’s hand to his mouth so he can kiss it, Buck nods, “Past time.”
