Faeriekit's big fat library post: what is a public library for?

Things almost any public library will do:

Let you borrow books. (Specialty libraries and archives may not permit you to borrow delicate materials. You may be able to look at them nevertheless, but you dont know until you ask.)

Allow you to put items on hold! (Want us to pull a book or hold it for you? We'll set it aside under your name as soon as it's available!)

Allow you to join in for programming (may be as simple as kids storytimes, or as complicated as academic lectures. It's usually cooking classes and knitting sessions though when the budget gets short. We love outside presenters though, especially locals.)

Inter-library loans (don't have a rare book? We'll try to get it from another library!)

Things your library will PROBABLY let you do:

Let you borrow other forms of physical media, such as DVDs, Video Games, audiobooks, CDs, etc. (This may cost you extra depending on library policy.)

Let you borrow magazines! (It's not like you're paying for a subscription, unless you're me and you like mail. Let us get them for you.)

Print/fax/scan (depends on the tech available in your library; for instance, it costs your library money to maintain a fax-specific phone line, so they may not do fax. Again, price may vary.)

Access online databases! (Ah, Ebsco. We meet again.) (But sometimes there's some cool stuff. Genealogy databases, kids' encyclopedias, all kinds of cool stuff)

Borrow ebooks and eaudiobooks! And maybe even emagazines! (Despite what people say, Libby is NOT the only service that allows your library to share ebooks with your device. There's like five I can think of off the top of my head, and your library has to pay to play. Ask which service your library offers directly so you can get the good stuff)

Put up/look at flyers. (Good for sharing public information! I just used one of our advertised services to apply for low income housing. Love library wages...woo...)

Let you volunteer! Need something to add to your resume? Need wo build up some real world work skills in a low pressure environment?Spend some time with us!

Let you use public computers! Check your email or watch yt vids or apply for jobs. Up to you.

Play with board games or puzzles as long as you're there. They may even have a swap for people to trade!

Things your library MAY have to offer you:

Makerspace (cool tech that lives at the library you can use/pay to use, such as tools, 3d printers, etc.)

Borrowing cooler tech to take home (WiFi hotspots, single-use tablets, and other cool tech)

English courses! Learn with peers!

Borrowing actual tools! (I had one library card that let me borrow hiking stuff like tents and navigational tools and sewing machines and other cool stuff and they will not renew my card because policy changed and no I'm not crying—)

Museum passes (hey! Sometimes you can get into a museum for free or for cheap!)

Book requests (hey. If you tell the library to buy a book, we may just straight up buy it! Why not? It's a guaranteed circ!)

Social worker/social work help (depends on if your library can cut a deal with an organization that has social workers)

Paperwork help for seniors (I don't know how this works because our town handles this one.)

Notary public services! (This one's just straight up like. My boss.)

Tutoring services! (We have kid volunteers AND a paid online service subscription to a tutoring site. Not bad.)

Certain streaming options! (Movies and television right as your fingertips! Or. Well. You know.)

Home delivery for housebound folks! (This one again depends on staffing, resources, money, etc etc.)

Book purchase! (No, really. Sometimes there's old books for sale, or donor books for sale, to help keep libraries running.)

And, of course, sometimes your local librarians are geniuses and come up with things I haven't even thought of. The moral of the story is, libraries do a lot of things, but the majority of them, as you can probably tell, depend on size, budget, physical resources, and local support. If you are interested in any of these services, please reach out to your local library; even if they don't offer these services specifically, making your interest known tells the library what sort of things people are looking for in the community, and may even affect financial decisions down the road. The thing I would like to emphasize the most, however, is that you are likely already paying for these services in the form of tax dollars; if you do not physically go and find out what services you are entitled to, you will never be able to take advantage of them.

Hey if you ever need more info on how to make zines on a budget I can hook you up!!! I don't have a printer so I use a lot of public places to get mine done. Also if you want to use thicker paper but don't have a printer you can bring your own paper to fedex and feed it through the printer :] as long as the paper is 100# (thickness) or less and laser/copier compatible you can print there!! Costs wayy more for color but even just a black and white little book of ur art can be so slay. Could also potentially work at libraries but idk their printer situations for sure.

i dont think we have any of the copy and print fedex centers here and my public library only lets you do B&W T_T which is smthng i could still look into but i wanted to play wit limited color....sucks that everything i wanna do is like impeded by my environment, but ill keep dis all in mind regardless (as i keep looking for Somewhere i cld print stuff on my own paper lolll) ^_^

Also for anyone registering in Texas: YOU DONT NEED A STAMP!!!!!! I can’t emphasize this enough!!!! The postage is already paid for by the government—the only thing u need to do is fill it out, fold it/seal it (it’ll have a little part for u to lick/tape/wtv and a folding line) and put in the mailbox! That’s it!!! If you’re 17 and 10 months go grab one, fill it out, and toss it in the mailbox!!

High schoolers: if u don’t have a printer/money to print/a car to drive, don’t worry!!!! Sometimes the county office is far, but there are other places that will have these. If you go to your local library, librarians will usually either have some out to take or have a few behind the counter already bc it’s a frequently needed public government resource in election season.

If you’re too far from libraries, you can also head over to a younger liberal teacher or even your school librarian and ask them to print it for you. You can also check with ur high school’s government teacher(s)!! They’ll also tend to have stacks already ready since they’re totally free to get and class relevant!

FILL IT OUT AS SOON AS YOU GET IT

The deadline to register is always getting moved up down south, so send ur form in ASAP and double check online if u can. It takes 2-3 weeks for a mailed in form to be counted and about a day for an in person turned-in form to be counted. If you’re worried about it getting lost in the mail and you’re 18, u can check ur registration status online! If you’re under 18, the registration will go in the day that u turn 18 as long as u sent it in on time and u can check then.

DONT HESITATE

DON’T PUT IT OFF

TLDR: If you’re 17 yrs and 10 months (or older) then:

1. Get your registration form (library, teacher, home printer, etc)

2. Fill out all ur info correctly and with fully clear handwriting (in pen! Black or blue ink, not pencil)

3. Follow the instructions (it has a line to fold it and a spot to seal it, no need to buy an envelope)

4. Put it in the mailbox (no need for stamps!! It’ll say right there that the postage is already paid for if it’s a full proper government registration form)

Optional: 5. Check your registration online (when you’re at least 18)

speaking as a literal librarian nothing frustrates me more than people on this site using the existence of libraries to shame people for downloading movies or books or w/e for free like a lot of stuff is available at libraries but not everything, instend of spending your energy scolding poor people just make educational posts about libraries or better yet advocate on behalf of your local to help it get more funds so it can grow its collection or even reach out directly to your local library to see if there is any need for volunteers (probably not lol) or any ways for you to donate money. first let me preface this by saying you don’t ever have to be sorry to ask a question and even though i’m having an internal crisis about my age it is absolutely not your fault for not knowing and i am happy to answer and happy to help and i am not in any way trying to embarrass or poke fun at anyone but myself and also good thing you asked this this year when i actually have access to my trusty old scanner again lol.

Using it for doodles is a great motivator.

Step One: Draw a Drawing

i’m using scrap paper because i’m lazy and because sometimes fitting a sketchbook in a scanner is a hassle because you might have to hold it in place. (There are sketchbooks like grumbacher which come with removable tabs that i’d recommend for stuff you want to scan but dont want to tear out of your sketchbook.)

Step Two: Pop it in your All in One Printer/Scanner that you totally definitely maybe have (or borrow someone else’s, you can do this for free at your local library and tbh their scanners are probably bigger) And Make Sure It’s Facing the Right Way Please

Step Three: Find the cables for your all in one printer/scanner that has been in storage for 3 years and actually hasn’t met your computer and needs to be introduced to it and thus you need to download the scanner app and oh my god this took slightly longer than expected aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

(a newer printer/scanner would be easier but mine is an oldboi and my computer has had some issues in the past so it’s a few apps short of a brain) (Oldboi scanner connects to laptop-kun via a USB cable because it pre-dates wireless printers that are much more common these days)

There is a button on the scanner I could press, but it’s probably actually better and easier to do it by opening the scanner app on the computer because you should preview your scan first in order to crop it and make sure it all fits and isn’t at a weird angle etc etc.

Step Four: Preview your image and make any adjustments necessary. I’ve cropped it but I’m not messing with the settings (the resolution would be important if you plan to print the image later and you might want to change it from colour to greyscale, but if you forget you can still do this in your editing program of choice really easily.

Step 5: Hit that scan button

and voila, your scanner has created an image that you can save, put on a usb stick, email to yourself, print, or whatever.

The scanner did a pretty good job of ignoring the big smudge i’d made by accident near his face, but I will want to open this up in an editing program like CSP to make my sketch easier to see. Scanning tends to wash things out a little (and with reflective material it doesn’t always show up well)

My guess is that fewer people have printer/scanners these days because so much “scanning” can be done with a phone - there are scanner apps you can download to your phone that are a little more precise than just using the camera app and can take scans of things larger than would fit in a printer/scanner, I just don’t have patience for them and haven’t really used them.

Step 6: drink and contemplate your own antiquity

Step 7: Editing your drawing

I won’t go into this because it depends on what program you use to edit but It usually helps to adjust the brightness/contrast of the lineart layer (I have this under Edit > Tonal Correction but it might be in a different spot in other programs)

and if your program also has level correction that’s really helpful with cleaning up lineart

as you can see it’s picked up all the gross smudges - so i move around these arrows to try to get them as clear as possible : ) I think the arrows are for white, grey and black respectively (or at least, bright, midtone, and dark).

in csp what I would do is hit “convert brightness to opacity” which should make all the white areas transparent so you can colour under the line art. You can usually achieve something similar by changing the layer to “Multiply” in other programs.

voila! Now you can use the sketch as is, draw over it or under it, make copies, whatever you want.

Visiting my brother lmfaaaooo i like visiting him! He lives in the country and i see cows every time i go but every time we go, my mom finds time to give me the classic what are you doing with your life lecture so ahh the beautiful absence of not getting that :)

You know who i miss? The librarians who are so sweet and never show any judgement i order 3-5 dvds a week, i miss their kindness... And their dvds. I miss seeing humans.

god okay so it all started sunday morning i wake up and my mom and i try to go to our local bakery because i’m going to a philosophy meeting and i thought it’d be nice to bring cookies or something. we both forget the bakery has been recently renovated and since it’s a famous local thing it’s crowded as fuck. there is a line out the door. so i don’t want to wait b/c it’s stupid to wait that long for cookies so we leave. then i go back up to my school campus, get back just in time for the philosophy thing, and that’s fine and great and i had a good time. then i have to go to work at the library until midnight with a woman who prattles on without stopping for breath (and who’s a trump supporter so i never want to talk to her but i can’t just say that b/c she’s my supervisor and blah blah blah) ANYWAYS i get back to my dorm at midnight and stay up watching - get this - the green inferno for whatever reason. go to bed at 2am. which is. my fault. but then i wake up at 5am this morning because i’m so stressed about this form i gotta submit for my internship and idk what i’m really supposed to do so i gotta wait until they place is open to call and ask. but then i fall back asleep and when i wake up i gotta run to class. then i get out of class and decided to do my homework for the afternoon and then do this fucking form b/c i don’t want hw hanging over my head while i’m trying to fiddle with printers and bureaucracy and all that shit. but then i get done w/ my hw and i still gotta call this place so i do that. by the time i get done on the phone it’s time to go to my afternoon class okay. and then i get out of that class and my one friend wants to talk dnd for a while (which didn’t bother me! i miss talking about dnd it was nice.) but then it’s almost 6pm by the time i’m done talking to her so i go to the library bc i gotta use their scanner bc i dont have one. but then i’m fillin out this form and i need info off documents that are back in my room. so i gotta run tf back to my room to fill this form out. run back to the library. and then i try to use the one xerox machine (because the other one is out of order bc fucking education majors keep running off like 300 pages at a time) but the one machine that’s working doesn’t scan to e-mail so i’m like. oh fuck. but then the cda comes over and is like. you can just scan it to a flashdrive. i say great!! so we do that and then i take it to one of the public computers to try and e-mail it to myself that way. and the flash drive won’t pull up on that computer! so i take it to the cda. she pulls it up on her computer. e-mails the pdf to me. (god bless her for doing all this 4real). then i gotta run back to my room to use my laptop because i left it there to charge and i didn’t want to submit this form on a public computer. i finally send this fucking this at 7pm. and now i gotta go to work in an hour and a half and i haven’t worked on my thesis at all today even though i told myself i would but i!!! didn’t!! have! time!!!!!

so let me preface with this: i work at the front desk in the main branch of a library in a small town in northwest florida. we get some wild people and situations.

one regular comes in and asks one question, says sorry about 20 times in a row, squirts some hand sanitizer into her palm and cups it. does not rub it into her hands. then leaves, hands still cupped.

“im looking for a book” do you know the name? “no” author? “no. but i remember it was red.”

one of my coworker’s ex-husband’s ex-wife comes in frequently in work out clothes and always tells us about who she’s suing this week. in the last few months, it’s been the police department, a church (for not fixing her car?), and someone for stalking her.

“i returned a book from my church’s library here yesterday. why didnt you catch it and give it back to me?”

a man screamed at the adult services department head for being gay and announced to everyone that he was god and we were all going to hell if we went to church. adult services banned god from the library.

one regular is banned from the college campus and is trying to sue the college. tried to steal a book and called it harassment when we asked for it back
