Then we have Callie AdamsFoster of The Fosters. She is an accurate depiction of a real human female if I’ve ever seen one. Her relationship with Mariana was so integral that the two now star in their own spin-off together. What is she like? Callie is messy, loyal, damaged (not just by a man btw), creative, guarded, passionate, lost, supportive, smart, imperfect. She’s a survivor. She puts herself in danger the very first episode in order to rescue her little brother from an abusive foster house. Is she “strong”? Yes, but not for any of the reasons SFCs™ are strong.

Despite all the horrors Callie has been through (the foster system, a rape, legal injustices) she pursued a law degree and is working with a judge as a social justice fighter to change the system through policies. She is not violent, instead her strength comes from her very real humanity, intelligence and perseverance.

Callie’s agency is one thing that truly stands out about her character. If we compare her to McDougall’s analysis of Richard II’s agency, we see how a female character can be integral in the plot of a story. McDougall writes, “The plot of [Richard II] is shaped around his (often extremely bad) decisions. In narrative terms, agency is far more important than “strength” – it’s what determines whether a character is truly part of the story, or a detachable accessory.”

Callie is one character who makes a series of bad decisions, with the best intentions, but must eventually learn to correct her mistakes. Much of the plot develops because of her autonomy and decisions. There would be no show without her. She is not replaceable. Additionally, she is allowed the chance to learn, grow and develop as a character, which is what makes her so three-dimensional, relatable and truly strong.
