Can I request the Fanihi (Mariana fruit bat)? Saw one at a wildlife conservation presentation at school when I lived on Guam and have been enamored with them ever since.

Mariana Fruit Bat (Pteropus mariannus) There are several subspecies of this species, the individual above is more precisely a member of the subspecies called the Guam Mariana Fruit Bat (Pteropus mariannus mariannus*). The other subspecies of Mariana Fruit Bat are the Pagan Mariana Fruit Bat (P. m. paganensis) and the Ulithi Mariana Fruit Bat (P. m. ulthiensis).
*That scientific name is quite the mouthful, isn't it? It can be abbreviated in scientific writing and on wikipedia once the genus and species have been established within a particular document (or wikipedia page) by using just the first letter of the genus and the species name like this: P. m. mariannus. You can also do this with species names, which can be a life saver with the more difficult to pronounce and spell genus names. That would look like this: P. mariannus.

The fog comes / on little bat feet 🐾
Fog the gray-headed flying fox, March 2023
I usually go for realism, but this time I tried making them as cute as I could... I just want people to like bats!!
~planning sketch below the cut~

These body proportions were a lot more normal.... ^^; I struggled with the crochet for a while because their face didn't go quite how I planned and the rest seemed to follow suit... but when I added hair and a face they kind of became their own thing! I'd still like to attempt the original plan sometime though :P

The grey-headed flying fox (pteropus poliocephalus) is the largest bat in Australia - their wingspan may reach up to 1 meter (around 3ft 3in).
They feed on nectar and pollen, as well as a variety of fruit, and play an important role in the propogation of these fruit species by distributing their seeds.
They are classified as Vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
Bonus fact: the grey-headed flying fox seems to be very faithful to the location in which they build their camp, some fox camps having been used for over a century!
Wildcare Australia is a not-for-profit organisation devoted to the care, rescue and rebilitation the wildlife of Australia.
