Tong Ling Fei (Psychic Princess) is now back with season 2 but as 3DCG animation!

One of my first shoujo-ish donghua. Its hard adjust when they pass the series to different studio because its hard to get use. Especially if the animation difference is like heaven and earth. I don't have problem with 3DCG but I wish the vibe is more similar to Liang Bu Yi (No Doubt in Us) and Cheng He Ti Tong (How Dare You). I think its closer to Jian Wang 3: Xia Gan Yi Dan Shen Jianxin (JX Online 3: Adventure of Hero Shen Jianxin). Unfortunately, I feel they overdid the movements. I like the character designs though. Very cute. I put the season 1 opening after it so you'll know how different it is.

Watch out for Bilibili international yt or app, they might upload the season 2 there!

Prince Ye Youming's Character & Personality

Youming is the eldest son of the Emperor. Despite this, he's the second prince because he denounced his claim as Crown Prince over to his second brother. Unfortunately, Youming was forced into an arranged marriage to Lady Qian by the Emperor as punishment. He's quite the capable and stern man. Youming is also formal and traditional. Thus, he dislikes those who challenge him, tease him, or disregard the rules. If either is done, Youming will dominate and control others to demonstrate his authority. While he's forever faithful to those who have helped him, his enemies and rulebreakers face no mercy. As such, Youming has quite a temper and will hold grudges, which is something he regrets at times. Beyond this, although he has many concubines, he has never slept with any of them. This is because the Empress forced these women onto Youming, but he's loyal to the woman he loves.

BNAP review: Psychic Princess (2018)!

I had a weirdly good time with this one.

Genre: romance/comedy/historical

Content rating: I'd probably say 14+ just for the double entendres... And how the idea of sex is sort of an undercurrent driving several different relationships. This show also has an iffy relationship with the idea of consent. I'll get to that

Length: 16 episodes for some reason

Psychic Princess is a Chinese show with a pretty straightforward "arranged marriage to lovers" plot. Our main girl (I had a really hard time with names in this one) gets married off to the purportedly mean and cruel Prince Ye in a political union. Luckily for her, Prince Ye is busy with Politics and wants nothing to do with her, so she decides to keep living her life however she wants.

Trying to keep it light on the spoilers but I do get a bit more detailed below with content warnings and feminist analysis etc below. Proceed at your own risk :)

The twists and turns in this were so fun. Not in a "plot twist" way but in a "??? Well I guess that might as well happen" way. Just weird stuff happening all the time. Random Goku-lookin dude appears out of thin air? Ok! Butterflies show up out of nowhere? Sure! Main character mentions a QR code?? Why not! It was fun and goofy in a way that sort of reminded me of old Shojo anime.

From a feminist standpoint, I felt overall pretty positive towards the show. The heroine is independent, resourceful and strong-willed. She goes around finding creative solutions to her problems, and she's not above playing a little dirty (lying, punching etc) to get what she wants, which makes her more interesting too. She has actual goals outside of her marriage that she works towards actively. She has terrible manners and complains loudly all the time, and none of these characteristics go away the minute a man gives her positive attention. It's really fun and refreshing to see a female character with so much personality.

Something that did feel weird to me was that our main character was sort of frequently put in situations where her consent wasn't being honored. She's fought over, discussed like a possession, tied to a bed, picked up, held, spanked and kissed against her will. At the end of the day, I feel that most of this was painted by the show as Bad (rather than funny, excusable or sexy), which I appreciate, although one character's creepy obsession with her is played for laughs. There were a couple of moments where I didn't fully know if the show was letting a moment of non-consent slide or not, which did make me squirm, but in the end that relationship came to a place that felt (overall) more comfortable to me.

Conclusion: I had a really really fun time with it and will probably go back and watch it again. Despite its shortcomings (iffy translation, weird plot moments, noncon-ish moments etc) it was a great time and surprisingly rewarding. Everybody watch it so they will make more please!!! (A guy can dream right??)
