My Vision for the Ominous Babysitters Club

Kristy Thomas makes a decisive move in founding the Babysitters Club, then continues to amass power, assets, and allies for most of the series (as well as sworn enemies). In #100: Kristy’s Downfall, she overplays her hand and is toppled from her position of power. She spends the last thirty-one books clawing her way back to the top, embittered and more tyrannical than ever.

Mary Anne Spier is a sensitive soul, more vulnerable than the rest of the club to demonic possession, life-changing encounters with eldritch beings, and the accidental acquisition of psychic abilities. Her false lover, low-level wizard Logan Bruno, senses her potential powers and jealously tries to keep her down through gaslighting. (Notable examples include his kidnapping of her cat, Tigger, and an incident where he swapped out two of her babysitting charges with eggs enchanted to look like real children.) Even when dealing with malevolent clones or a cursed book, the true horror of a Mallory book is always being Mallory. In #126: Never Look Back, Mallory, however, she breaks away from the oppressive environs of Stoneybrook to attend boarding school. Although she is terrorized and vilified by a duplicitous roommate, her problems are solved fairly quickly with the help of sympathetic classmates and reasonable adults. In her final scene, Mallory sits on her bed, beginning to question her long-held assumption that she is both destined for greatness and bound for hell.

Jessi Ramsey is a Faustian figure, always thirsting after glory and forbidden knowledge. Already a talented ballet dancer, she makes deals with various gods, demons, and other supernatural creatures to learn how to decipher runes, talk to animals, turn base metals into gold, commune with spirits, revenge herself upon her enemies, and fly. Her powers come in handy at her dance school in New York City, which is extremely cursed and haunted. Despite her towering ambitions, she is fairly easygoing, even managing to make friends with her sinister doppelgänger Jenni in #68: Jessi and the Shadow-Self. Towards the end of the series, she is faced with the choice of becoming a professional ballet dancer or obtaining the ability to turn herself into a beautiful Arabian horse at will (she is also a horse girl). She makes the mature decision to turn down both opportunities for the time being, instead opting to be a kid and experiment with necromancy, time-travel, fun doppelgänger pranks, and discussing equine literature with her best friend Mallory. In the short-lived Ominous Friends Forever series, though, she becomes a ballerina and (it is heavily implied) a were-horse, in part due to Mallory’s defection.

Abby Stevenson was introduced as an eleventh-hour interloper who switches between unhinged, corny-joke-filled attempts to turn Kristy’s life into chaos (much like the Joker in The Dark Knight) and unhinged, corny-joke-filled attempts to charm Kristy into being her girlfriend so they can be a terrifying power couple. Unlike with Dawn, her dual nature was a deliberate narrative choice; many later Ominous BSC books contain subplots that are just other club members wondering aloud what Abby’s deal is. Abby’s own books don’t shed much light on her motivations; she seems more preoccupied with ordinary adolescent concerns, like her upcoming bat mitzvah and her fraught relationship with her cryptic twin Anna (who only speaks in palindrome). Her last book, #127: The Twilight of Abby Stevenson, is a surprisingly sweet coming-of-age romance in which she and Kristy drop their hostilities and go to the movies on Valentine’s Day. Their relationship ultimately falls apart, though, thanks to Kristy’s unquenchable thirst for revenge on her enemies. Abby breaks up with her and gets really into David Lynch.

Logan Bruno is a low-level wizard who comes from the swamp and hates his father. As an alternate officer for the club, he sometimes babysits.

Shannon Kilbourne, the other alternate officer, is something of a blank, but she’s heavily implied to be a lost Dollanganger of some sort.

hello !! i think i might swap naeva in for somebody else just b/c i’m having trouble getting inside naeva’s head, probably b/c she tries to be rly responsible n like...............i am not responsible. i am nowhere near the realm of responsible. my idea of a good time is trash-diving with possums and running from cops. she drinks tea daily and naps like twice a day. i love her a lot but go crazy aaa go stupid, y’know

absolutely am not dropping amos as he is my lifeline. his chaotic energy is what fuels me. if he goes i would probably cease to exist. i may go on a semi-hiatus for this week just so i can sort out what i’m doing with naeva but amos will be pretty solid just b/c he’s always verging on nonsensical.

hi I have a big problem with how Anzu is written in yugioh and I wonder how much you agree. She is so weak and helpless and i wish the anime gave her more important and more mature nature and more complicated personalty. She is even worse in fanfiction! Everyone writes like they hate her or she is like really girly and damsel in distress. How would you write her different? have you seen anyone write her better. Hello anon. I don’t believe I have this type of question before, so no worries.

I strongly disagree on Anzu is weak and helpless. She has a badass, take no shit attitude in season 0 yugioh (both anime and manga). Not only she defended Yugi from bullies, she also bashed the globe on a brainwashed professor so they can escape from Shadi’s control, guided the group in Death T to avoid falling blocks. Oh, it happen offscreen but she even punched a man for touching her butt at work and got fired from it (manga based). Her badass attitude got really toned down and got reduced into a love interest role, which I have to admit as an Anzu fan, I’m disappointed on Anzu’s wasted potential. I can see why some people aren’t fond of Anzu and seeing her as a non action girl if people are not familiar with season 0 Yugioh in both anime and manga. The creators were more focused on Joey, Yugi, and Seto’s character development more so than female characters. Shounen anime (at least back in the 90’s), are more focused on male characters since their intended main audience are young boys. Female characters were used by creators as as eye candy and have limited roles that are stereotypical. For example, love interest, clingy jealous girl, the nagging wife, etc.

Despite that her badass attitude is toned down from season 0, she is strong. I just wish that the creators expand more of her character and have more complicated personality. She’s certain of her future as a dancer for a 16 yer old which is impressive. How many 16 years old already knew what they want in the future? Many adults don’t know what they want in their 20’s. She’s adventurous, headstrong, and confident. Season 0 Yugioh revealed that she’s the type of person that believe one can make one’s future rather than passively get through life. She rejected the fake psychic’s services and said something like “That I can make my own future and see it for myself.”

She helped both Yugi and Atem open up more, find Atem’s past by suggesting to go to the museum, supported her friends to go on when they want to give up, doesn’t take Seto’s attitude, and discover Atem’s name. If it weren’t for Anzu discovering Atem’s name, Atem would lost to Zorc.

I saw people wrote Anzu pretty well as a well rounded person and doesn’t fall into the homophobic girl/slut shaming for the fan’s shipping, damsel in distress, or make her a villain. I have some fanfic recs that has Anzu as a well rounded person. Some fanfics have shipping and I tagged them.

If I were to write Anzu for a story, I would expand Anzu’s backstory on how she and Yugi became friends. I would expand more on how she is independent & adaptive from the traveling due her family’s work. I would write her as a headstrong woman, while trying to avoid making her short tempered. She’s an expressive person and is not afraid to show her emotions. However, she is not easily flustered unless it’s someone she likes or in extreme situations. Once she’s more comfortable with someone she likes, she’s not easily flustered. Being emotional does not make a person weak. She’s emotional, but as a dancer, she is able to express her emotions as well staying calm in stressful situations considering that she has to do dance auditions for scholarships. In the manga, Anzu is the one in charge for leading the group to avoid the falling blocks at Death T. I would write her as a strong person yet have insecurities when it comes to love.  She can be naive with trusting people too much, but she’s not taking shit from someone who mess with her. If a man cat calls her or say something sexist, Anzu would respond back with a sassy atttitude or call him out for cat calling.

Cloud-Watching in The Afternoon!

It was the simple things that moved her to tears of utter joy, and she hardly even knew why she was thinking of such a thing. This was not until Velma realized this was one of the moods the new year seemed to bring as the days passed. It was rather beautiful, as it was a pleasant breath of fresh air from what became the wasteland of last year. It hardly even mattered now, as she noticed the fluffy clouds moving upon a peaceful sky. This was a very nice alternative to stargazing, in which wouldn't really end so well from the last few times she had tried doing it. Maybe today, she would finally, just finally muster up the courage to show Mayor Kat the wonderful thing they call "cloud-watching". Just what would the mayor think of something quite like this? There was just so much to pique her curiosity, as she noticed clouds of varying types, and one that really caught her eye was one that had a slight resemblance to a cat, and that really made her happy. She had heard a sound of crunching snow in the distance, and that meant footsteps. She looked to her right, as that was where the sound had came from, and she saw purple hair and immediately could tell that it was Mayor Kat. She could tell that the mayor was looking past the clouds and walking towards the bulletin board, but maybe, with all of this mustered-up courage and through all of the hesitation and nervousness, one of her dreams will come true right before her very eyes.

She walked towards Kat, and she quietly yet nervously said to herself, "Y-you can d-do this, V-Velma.. d-don't be s-scared.. y-you've come a-all this w-way.. y-you have t-the courage n-now, blih.." From those words she was saying, she was trying to put herself at ease, and she was hoping that the mayor wouldn't notice her talking to herself like this, it may seem crazy to some, but to her, it seemed enjoyable and put her at ease sometimes when she just needed to think out loud. She saw the mayor look towards her, and she could only hope she only heard her footsteps and not her nervous words. "Oh, hello there! I was just about to check the bulletin board, but.. we can do it together if you want! Or, were you trying to speak before me..? I heard some things, and you seemed a little nervous, I could hear a soft voice and I could tell it was yours!" Mayor Kat said, waving hello to the goat. She was caught. Caught talking to herself in front of Kat. She could only hope that this would end well. "U-umm.. y-yes... i-it was m-me.. I-I hope y-you don't m-mind that, blih.." Velma said, blushing a little in embarrassment that Kat had heard her.

"Aww, don't be embarrassed! It's not that bad to talk to yourself! Actually, I've heard it helps you remember things more!" Mayor Kat said, smiling. Velma breathed a sigh of relief when she heard the mayor said such a thing. But she had to make sure that it wouldn't happen again. Finally, she had enough courage mustered up to ask the mayor the very question she had come to ask her about. "...D-do you... w-want to go c-cloud-watching with m-me, blih...?" She said, rather nervously yet with a pinch of courage. "Cloud watching? Sure! It's great for me to try something new every once in a while." Mayor Kat said back. Velma felt as if she could fly, but she could only wish that she could have wings and literally fly, as it was all yet another one of her daydreams. But instead, she twirled around happily as if she were like a ballerina, and then she led the mayor to the perfect cloud viewing spot. It was just right, with almost little-to-no trees in the way or any bulidings at all blocking the clouds. Plus, there was a bench they could both sit on as well to watch the clouds!

She sat on the modern bench, and she saw the mayor doing the same. It was the perfect view and it was really peaceful too, with the sounds of the ocean within hearing distance. When she had found this spot to view the clouds, she just knew it was meant to be when she saw the sky seem so close to her. The sounds of the ocean were just an added bonus. "I-isn't it w-wonderful, blih...?" Velma said happily as she saw the mayor actually looking up at the pretty clouds. "It might not be as pretty as stargazing is, but I find this rather pleasant, hehe!" Mayor Kat said back. She didn't seem to mind it at all that the mayor said that, after all, it is something she knew made Kat happy, and that was that. Maybe she could find the cloud that slightly resembled a cat again, but time had passed and clouds could possibly be harder to pinpoint because of the passed time. 

After a few minutes of looking, she had finally found it, and it was just as cute as it was when she had saw it the first time around. She just had to show Mayor Kat this cute little cloud! "M-Mayor Kat..? L-look at t-this cloud, blih..!" Velma exclaimed happily. "Which cloud is it? Hehe! I don't know which one it is until you tell me." Mayor Kat asked with a smile. "T-this one r-right here, blih..! I-It has a-a cute r-resemblance to a-a cat, blih..!" Velma said, as she pointed to the cloud. She felt rather happy as she pointed to it. It felt as if everything seemed right in the world for once, as it truly brought her happiness to see that the mayor sort of enjoyed cloud-watching also. "Ah! It's so cute!! I would have never seen it before until you pointed it out to me. You know.." Mayor Kat said back. She wondered what exactly the mayor meant when the last two words came.out of her mouth and so she asked, "W-what, blih..?" It really piqued her curiosity and she really wanted to know why the mayor had said that.

"You know.. I know I had said it once, but I'll say it again. You never cease to amaze me. There is just something about you that really makes me happy to be your friend! You mustered up all of this courage just to see me and let me go cloud-watching with you and that really makes me happy! You've made me grow fonder of the wonders in this world, and it really gives me something to look forward to each day here." the mayor said. The look on her face turned to astonishment as she heard those words come out from her mouth just like that. Just what did she do to amaze the mayor? It might be one of those questions left unanswered, but it really made her happy in a way that was unexplained. As the afternoon passed, it made her realize just how far they had come since they had met when she had first moved to Camelot. It made her wonder, just what would come next? She wasn't a psychic, but she was sure it was going to be something good.
