Honestly doing a lot of Psycheducation about OCD on this blog is vital otherwise Rory seems kinda Mary Sue ish/not fun to interact with / knows too much
There's a big misconception that OCD impacts just behaviors and thought. By writing Rory I hope to expose more folks in the rp community to other aspects of OCD. Like how it influences us socially and our hyper awareness of everything, so when they interact with a person who has OCD there's an easier grasp for empathy and understanding.
Rory is never going to know the full details or full truth. The true OCD detective isn't someone who knows all, rather its an everyday detective who happens to have OCD and notices strange things in their environment or hyperfixates on aspects of their research.
The real tragedy in Rorys character is her metahuman ability combined with her moral belief that she MUST at all times do the right thing.

Hi! This may be outside of your expertise, but I'm having a very difficult time drawing distinctions between orthorexia and low-carb eating for a type 1 diabetic. I do not have access to psycheducation or a knowledgeable Dr at the moment, unfort. If I eat intuitively, I risk highly unpredictable blood sugars for as long as 2 months after just one meal, presenting many serious health dangers, but I also have an unrecorded history of EDs! Do you know of any resources that could be useful?? TYIA!
My partner, the other mod, is a type 1 diabetic in recovery and will probably have some things to add, but I’ll give my perspective for now.
1. What insulins are you using? Some of them don’t work very well at all and make everyone I know of who’s tried them pass out on a regular basis. Some of them work okay for some people and make other people very unstable. It sounds like the insulins you’re using don’t work very well for you.
Your doctor might not be knowledgeable, but you may be able to ask them to try different insulins to see if they work better for you. My partner is on Tresiba once a day and Novolog sliding scale, and that seems to work pretty well.
(Warning: the doctors with credentials in diabetes are almost always thoroughly steeped in diet culture, and talking to them, or even looking at the posters on their walls, can be extremely triggering. Same with dietitians. If you can, make sure you have support going into any appointment with them.)
2. This advice comes from Ellyn Satter and is about getting kids to eat a greater variety of food, but I think it applies to people with problems regulating their blood sugar as well. Add, don’t subtract.
Carbs are not bad. People with diabetes have trouble processing a lot of carbs at once, even on the right insulins - but that trouble is greatly lessened if you eat them with enough protein and fat at the same time. Meat seems to work the best for this for my partner (e.g. eating spaghetti with fatty ground beef). Deep-frying foods helps. The diabetes professionals will likely not approve of this advice, but I’ve seen it play out in my partner’s A1c.
It helps to have access to a variety of snacks that are mostly protein and fat so you always have something to balance out carbs with, or to eat if you don’t want to bother taking more insulin (of course, this gets a lot harder if you’re poor and/or have food allergies). Nuts/nut butter, jerky, and hard-boiled eggs are some things that might work for you.
Good luck, and please write back to us with any questions you have.

Light therapy is a familiar treatment for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), but research is showing it to be pretty useful to folks with Bipolar Disorder as well!
While it’s still somewhat preliminary, exposure to a “happy light” can help with depression symptoms and even bring about a remission. It can also trigger a switch into mania or hypomania, though---the time of the day seems to matter quite a lot.
Read the abstract here. Heads-up, this trial was performed exclusively with female participants.
On a similar note, folks looking to recover from manic or hypomanic episodes may find blue-blocking glasses useful! You can learn more at LowBlueLights.com---this info features a couple of studies.
Overall, the research strongly suggests melatonin involvement in mood regulation (which makes sense!). FYI, though, these studies either contradict each other on when light should be introduced, or indicate that it’s a matter of introducing the light gradually.
Be sure to do your research and try this out under doctor supervision, or at least with risk awareness!

There is manic depression (often clinically termed as an agitated depression state) and also melancholy depression, and both go with bipolar.  It is not one or the other.  New research shows that the three primary "chemical" or "neuron sets" are Intellect, Energy, and Mood.  If intellect and mood are down and energy is up, you are manically depressed.  If all three are down, you are melancholy depressed.  If you already suffer from mixed episodes it is even more complicated.  These three sets of criteria moves in uneven waves.  If all three are UP, you are manic AF.  They are finding there are many types of depression and mania.  This is a complex illness.

We overthink, we stress, we waste time worrying about things we can't control. We focus on the negative things that might never happen, and we end up suffering in our heads.
