An influential text on the study and practical application of psychedelic substances for entheogenic or consciousness expanding purposes. It was one of few books that provided the detailed first hand experience of working with these allies beyond mere speculation. It was written in 1994 and there had been a new revised edition. I recommend reading both, especially the first edition because that is where all of the practical information is. The first half of the book is some shamanic philosophy and first hand entheogenic experience from various sources including the author’s. Newman specializes in the historical and current use of entheogenic compounds in magical and initiatory settings. Ritual magic and alchemy are teeming with obscure mentions of miraculous substances and entheogenic experience. In this well-research volume, Newman explored the obscure history of the Spirit molecule, DMT, through alchemical allegory and the symbol acacia branch, one of the plant sources for the compound. The presentation is based on the topic of his new book Angels in Vermillion: The Philosophers Stone from Dee to DMT.
