and i go back to december all the time
when: sunday 08/25
where: the lima bean
who: stacey evans & mila holliday @milaholliday
triggers: none
summary:
stacey bumps into mila at the lima bean, after not seeing her for months since they broke up, and they talk more about themselves and where they stand
Stacey Evans It had been a long day and The Bean had been so busy, and Stacey was honestly so glad that her shift was ending. She grabbed her stuff, much quicker than normal and headed around the counter and through the coffee shop. All she wanted to do when she got home was take a nice hot bath and read some more of her new book. But as she opened door to leave, too preoccupied by her phone, she bumped into someone. "Oh my god I am so sorry, are you okay?" She quickly asked the person who she had knocked into, before she took a good look at them and paused. It was Mila. Her ex. "Oh… Hi…" God this was awkward, they'd hadn't seen each other since Mila had broke things off just before the summer. "So you're back on campus?"
Mila Holliday
Mila had been lost in thought as she headed inside The Bean, the familiar hum of the coffee shop in the background bringing back memories she wasn’t sure she wanted to revisit, but they did have her favorite wrap and she was starving.
She barely registered Stacey coming through the door until they collided. Instinctively, Mila took a step back, adjusting her bag on her shoulder.
"Yeah, I’m fine," she replied, brushing off the bump. But when she looked up and saw Stacey’s face, her heart sank. She hadn’t expected to run into her and certainly not like this. "Hi…" she echoed softly, her voice carrying a hint of hesitation.
"Your shift changed," Mila stated, her tone as uncertain as she looked. She glanced away, trying to find the right words. "But um yeah, I'm back," she added, finally meeting Stacey’s eyes again. "Second year of my master’s. Can't really believe I made it through last year." She offered a small, awkward smile, unsure how to handle the sudden flood of emotions seeing Stacey brought back.
Stacey Evans Stacey had been looking at Mila for as long as she could, but as soon as their was eye contact she looked away. There was a blush growing on her cheeks and she looked down at her feet. "I work Sunday mornings now. Now that I…" She doesn't finish her sentence. Sunday's were always their day together so she never worked the morning shift, spending most the time at Mila's, laying in bed all day.
She looked back up as Mila carried on speaking. There was a small smile on her face that she couldn't help. Hearing that her ex was still doing her master's made her happy, she deserved good things. "Well you're very smart that's why. And you worked very hard last year." Her usual sunshine persona had snuck into her response, and realising what she said she looked away again.
What was she doing? She was so awkward. And now her mouth was going to run away with her. "I've just finished actually. You were coming in for something? Can I buy you a coffee to say sorry for bumping into you?"
Mila Holliday Mila’s heart softened at the sight of Stacey’s blush, and a small, genuine smile tugged at her lips. For a fleeting moment, she wanted to reach out, to close the space between them and pull Stacey closer. She wanted to strip away all the awkwardness, to dive into an honest conversation about their feelings, no walls, no pretense. But she knew better. She had been down this road before and life had taught her that not everyone navigates emotions the way she does.
“Oh, yeah, right.” The mention of Sunday mornings stirred something deep within her, a familiar ache that she quickly pushed aside. No point lingering on it now.
“Thanks,” she said, her voice softening, touched by Stacey’s words in a way she hadn’t expected. “I guess hard work does pay off.” Despite the awkwardness hanging between them, Stacey made Mila feel more at ease than she had in months just by being close like that.
Still, the tension of having been avoided all summer remained. And now here was Stacey, offering coffee. Mila didn’t know how to interpret it, so she simply nodded, trying to make sense of the moment. “You don’t have to, really. Unless… you actually want to catch up and stuff.” She cringed inwardly at how the words came out, the uncertainty thick in her voice. God, it was awkward.
Stacey Evans Her eyes roamed all over her ex's form. She still looked good, so so good. And everything was just coming flooding back to her. Stacey had spent the summer trying to forget about Mila, trying to take her siblings' advice and move on, but now that she was here in front of her and still so beautiful, she was finding it very hard to forget.
Stacey's heart was beating so fast as her mind flashed to them together on the mornings they'd spend together, tangled together under the sheets after they'd… okay no, this wasn't the time to think about that, and her blush turned even darker. Stacey just offered a small smile and nodded. "It's good to hear that you're doing okay."
This was probably a terrible idea, but she'd already put it out into the universe, she couldn't take it back now. "It's the least I can do." She replied in a slightly squeaky voice. Did she want to catch up? Of course she did. And it's not like there was any bad blood between them right? It was just awkward as hell. Looking over her shoulder, she saw an empty table. "Last chance."
Mila Holliday The weight of their past hung between them, unspoken but heavy. Mila could feel her heart tighten in response but she kept her composure, holding onto the delicate balance between what was said and what wasn’t. “Yeah… thanks,” she said, her tone soft. It was comforting to know Stacey still cared, even if it felt complicated.
A faint laugh escaped her lips at Stacey's squeaky tone. There had always been something endearing about how easily she got flustered. Mila's gaze followed Stacey’s to the empty table nearby and every instinct of self-preservation she had urged her to turn around and walk away but she couldn’t bring herself to leave Stacey like that. Well, not again.
“Alright,” Mila said, her smile small, uncertain. “It's just coffee,” she murmured, almost as if reassuring herself.
Stacey Evans There was a brief moment where Stacey was really worried that Mila was going to say no, and her jaw clenched as she waited for the rejection. But then the older woman is saying yes and she blinks a few times in surprise. "Yeah? Yeah. Alright." She responded and turned around to head to the empty table and place her purse on it. "Take a seat. I'll be right back." And she hurried off to the counter.
This was insane honestly and although Stacey wasn't regretting it, she could certainly feel the weight of the decision in her chest and she almost slumped against the counter, ignoring the look off her co-worker who was waiting for her order. She paused for a moment as she thought, realising that she hadn't asked Mila exactly what she wanted to drink, but then she just reeled off what her ex normally got and hoped it was right. And not a coffee drinker she ordered lemonade for herself.
Once the drinks were done she headed back over to the table and sat down opposite her ex-girlfriend. This was surreal. "So… how long have you been back on campus?" She asked quitely as she passed the coffee over. "And what have you been doing all summer?"
Mila Holliday As Stacey hurried off to the counter, Mila exhaled slowly, letting her guard down for just a moment and trying to make sense of Stacey's behavior. She could still hear the faint hum of the coffee shop, grounding her in the present, though the flood of emotions swirling in her chest made it hard to focus.
She took a seat at the table, her fingers lightly tracing the edge of the napkin as she waited. When Stacey returned, setting the coffee down in front of her, Mila noticed it was her usual order. She lifted it to her lips, taking a small sip before glancing up. "Thanks," she said softly, feeling a flicker of warmth at the thoughtful gesture. "Uh, I got back a couple of weeks ago," Mila answered, her voice quiet but steady. "Just been settling back in and trying to get a head start on things. You know how it is." She shrugged, trying to sound casual, though her mind was still swirling.
"Summer was…" She hesitated, her eyes dropping to the coffee for a moment before meeting Stacey’s again. "I went to the Hamptons for a while. Spent most of it with my family but uh some friends came to visit. But yeah, it was fine, I guess." She wasn’t sure how much she wanted to share, so she shifted the focus back to Stacey. "What about you?"
Stacey Evans Stacey nodded in response and gave another soft smile. "You're welcome." She muttered, watching carefully as Mila drank her coffee. It seemed that the order was right and she could feel her heart flutter in her chest, the feeling of making Mila happy made her happy. Stacey took a moment to listen to her ex talk, sipping her lemonade as she did. "Yeah, I totally get it." She had been very determined to get a head start of everything for the new semester too. "Lot's of things going on. And you're always such a busy person with everything that you do."
She brightened up slightly at the mention of what Mila did with her summer. "Oh really? That's incredible. I've never been myself but I've heard it's a lovely place." Was there talk of them going together once? Maybe? Or maybe Stacey had just made that up in her head right then. But there was hesitation on her ex's part, so maybe that wasn't the full story.
Feeling a bit like she had been prying, she forced a smile and looked down at the table. "It was fine." Stacey shrugged, trying to act casual. "I moved in with Ali and Jake so that's cool. It's nice to not feel so lonely at home now." Her head picked back up and she gazed at Mila opened mouthed. "That wasn't a dig at you I…" She looked away again. "You knew how I hated being on my own anyway." Her voice was small.
Mila Holliday Mila's heart clenched a little at Stacey's words, even though they weren't meant as an accusation. She shifted uncomfortably in her seat, her fingers tightening slightly around her cup. "I know," she said softly, her eyes lowering to the coffee in front of her. The guilt was there, lurking beneath the surface, and Stacey's small voice only made it worse. She let out a quiet breath, trying to shake the feeling. "And you know I'll never relate because I love being alone. Having big families had a totally different impact on us," she added, her small laugh never quite reaching her eyes."It’s… really great that you’re not alone anymore, though. Living with friends sounds like it'll be a lot better for you. You deserve that." Mila hadn’t meant to make her feel like she was leaving her alone. Things had just gotten too intense, and she needed a break. Her fingers tapped lightly against the side of her coffee cup as she fought the urge to apologize, unsure if she wanted to address the elephant in the room even though Stacey kind of already had. "I’m really glad you’re doing okay, though," she added, her voice quieter, almost as if she was convincing herself.
Stacey Evans Great, now look at what she'd done. It wasn't just awkward, now it was just hard. But Stacey's lips twitched up into a small smile as Mila spoke. "Yeah, your family is a little bigger than mine. And your parents are still together, so big busy family." She didn't really know Mila's siblings or parents but there was never any jealousy of her family, just admiration. The tension in her body started to come back, the news of her father's upcoming marriage on her mind. "It's going to be fun." She answered, now finally looking at Mila again. "And yeah, better for me. Ali and Jake have been good friends." Stacey smiled her thanks and sipped some more of her lemonade. As she watched Mila for a moment she decided that she needed to stop being so timid with a person that less than two months ago she felt very comfortable with. Sitting up a little straighter, she casually placed a hand onto the table. "I just want to say again that I'm not mad at you, at all. I get why we ended things. And honestly I just still want to be your friend because you're really awesome and I do still care about you." Exhaling slowly, Stacey managed a small grjn. That felt a bit better.
Mila Holliday Mila’s gaze softened as Stacey spoke, her fingers absently tracing the edge of the napkin in front of her. "Yeah, it can get a bit crazy, but that’s just how it is. Big, loud, and always in each other's business." She gave a small, genuine smile before taking another sip of her coffee. As Stacey mentioned Ali again, a flicker of realization passed through Mila. She had been so caught up in the moment that when Stacey brought up her roommates earlier, the names hadn’t fully registered. Well, it was a relief Stacey wanted to stay friends; it would’ve been awkward otherwise, considering how close Mila was with Ali.
"I’d really like that, being friends," she said, meeting Stacey’s gaze, hoping her sincerity was clear. "I still care about you, you know. You were such a big part of my life last year. Even when things got intense… I never wanted to lose that."
She paused, letting out a slow breath. "So yeah, I think staying in each other’s lives as friends will be good for both of us." Mila offered a small grin, feeling the tension in her chest start to ease.
Stacey Evans Stacey's smile was tight. Her family used to be like that, but it had seemed that they had grown apart, she wished they would go back to that dynamic though. "Always sounds fun." And then she let the conversation of families drop.
Then her eyes were looking back up at Mila and her grin was growing. "Yeah?" There was hope, that their friendship could be salvaged and they could be back to how they were before they starting dating at least. "I want to be there for you, like you're always there for me." Her shoulder slumped slightly as Mila described them as intense, that mainly being Stacey's fault, but was still happy that they were on the mend.
Her tension was nearly all gone now. "Thank you. I'd like that." She smiled softly. "And thank you for agreeing to sit and talk with me. I hope I haven't kept you from your day or from doing anything important. I should have asked before we sat down."
Mila Holliday Mila’s eyes softened as she set down her coffee cup. "It's ok, Stace. Honestly, any excuse to avoid working on my thesis is a win right now," she said with a light laugh. There was a lightness in her voice, but it carried more weight, more sincerity. "Besides, I wouldn’t pass up the chance to catch up… especially if it comes with coffee."
She winked and leaned forward slightly. "Look, things got intense and maybe we both fumbled a bit, but you’re still… someone I care about." Mila hesitated before adding, "I don’t want you thinking you ever pushed me away or made things harder. I was just… overwhelmed. But sitting here now I realize I missed this. I missed you."
Her lips curved into a small, genuine smile. "Will you still binge watch shows with me, even though I always fall asleep halfway through?"
Stacey Evans Stacey's eyes brightened. "Oh, you're working on it still? That's so exciting! How's it going?" Then she giggled and brushed some hair behind her ear. "Don't worry, it'll always come with coffee. I still don't understand how you drink it, but I will always be here to pour it."
As Mila winked at her, Stacey's cheeks turned bright red and she bit her lip and looked away. "I care about you… a lot." But obviously Mila knew that. She didn't regret that she told Mila that she was in love with her, even if it had ended their relationship, because she was. There was still those thoughts in the back of her mind that she had pushed Mila away, but she just smiled and tried to push it away. "And I do miss you, a lot."
But then as the other woman spoke, her smile got more genuine too and she nodded. "Yeah. I will. I'd like that." Then she's chuckling. "You were always so cute, you'd bury your head in my shoulder or lay on my chest and just nap away as I cried at whatever we were watching on Netflix." Her heart ached, she just wanted all those memories back.
Mila Holliday "Slowly," Mila chuckled softly, trying to downplay the stress. "I was supposed to write around thirty pages during the break, but I wrote zero. Now I'm so worried I’m behind that I can’t seem to write anything. It's a whole thing." She ran a hand through her hair, the weight of the unspoken pressure visible in the slight tension in her shoulders. "But hey If God ever drank something, it’d be this, Stacey, I'm telling you," she added with a grin, raising her cup for emphasis.
As she caught the blush on Stacey's cheeks, Mila's heart softened a little more. The warmth in Stacey’s voice, the way she talked about missing her… it tugged at Mila in a way she wasn’t expecting. She swallowed gently, her smile still there but a bit more wistful now.
"Yeah, I was never great at watching stuff, was I?" She laughed lightly. "I guess your chest was just too comfy. Perfect for naps." Her eyes flickered with something deeper, but she kept her tone light. "Maybe we could do that again sometime, you know." Her gaze held Stacey’s for a moment longer, feeling like she was walking a delicate line between what she wanted and what was the right thing to do.
Stacey Evans Stacey frowned as Mila spoke about her thesis. "Hey." She started, reaching across the table to place her hand on Mila's arm. "You can do this, okay? I know you're probably a little stressed out about it, but you've got this. Just take it a bit at a time and soon the words will come to you." Realising what she was doing, she quickly took back her hand. "If you say so. It's so bitter I can barely stomach it, but it's keeping me in a job."
She shook her head. "No, not really. But it was cute." Stacey chuckled lightly. "You were always so quick to fall asleep, but you always looked so peaceful so I never had the heart to wake you up." Their eyes locked and she still felt the sparks between them. "Yeah. We could." She replied, very eagerly. "I'd like that." Was it the right thing to do? Probably not. But Stacey's heart took over from her brain and she'd already spoke her answer. "Do you still have my number? Then you can text me when you want to hang out."
Mila Holliday Mila felt the warmth of Stacey's hand on her arm and though the touch was brief, it left a lingering sense of comfort. She smiled softly, appreciating the encouragement more than she could express. "Thanks," she said, her voice softer now, "When dad called yesterday we spoke for like an hour about it so really I'm just annoyed I'm still feeling this overwhelmed." She tried to laugh off the stress but there was a deeper gratitude in her eyes.
When Stacey pulled her hand back and joked about coffee, Mila grinned. "It’s an acquired taste. One day you’ll join the dark side," she teased, lifting her cup in a mock salute.
The mention of their old Netflix nights brought back a wave of nostalgia. Her heart tugged at the memory of falling asleep on Stacey’s shoulder, feeling safe and at ease. Mila's eyes softened as they locked with Stacey’s, and for a moment, everything else faded. "You never woke me up, huh?" she said, her smile turning a little wistful. "Guess I owe you for being so patient with me," she said, reaching across the table and gently placing her hand over Stacey’s. Her heart raced a little, the urge to pull Stacey into a hug almost overwhelming. But instead, Mila squeezed her hand lightly, her thumb brushing against Stacey's skin.
Stacey Evans Stacey's smile was soft and she nodded. "Please don't feel overwhelmed. You're going to get your thesis done and then once it's all over and done with it'll be totally worth it right?" She could see how stressed Mila was and she just wanted to gather her into her arms and make all her fears go away. Giggling at her ex's joke, she reached up to brush some hair behind her ear. This felt a little flirty. Were they flirting? Or was she just overthinking things?
She had to look away, them staring at each other was so intense and Stacey had to move her head, her cheeks flushing bright. "No. I couldn't, you needed your sleep and I was just glad that you were." Mila's hand touched her and she had to hold back a gasp and also the urge to tangle their fingers together. "I'll always be patient with you." Her voice was quiet and she looked back over at her. "Just call me any time okay?"
Mila Holliday "Yeah, it’ll be worth it." Mila agreed, glancing down at her coffee cup. “It’s just hard to see the finish line when you’re drowning in research and caffeine.” She tried to downplay the tension with a smile, but it was still there, lingering between them. As Stacey looked away, Mila’s gaze softened, noticing the way her cheeks flushed.
Stacey was so sweet and caring, Mila loved it about her. “You always were too good to me. Anyone else would’ve kicked me off their lap or shoved me to the other side of the couch, but not you.” Mila’s voice was almost a murmur, but she held Stacey’s eyes when she looked back up. “I’m gonna hold you to that, though. I’ll call you. Even if it’s just… you know, to talk about life or something.”
Her fingers brushed lightly against Stacey’s, testing, but she didn’t pull away. “Thanks, Stacey. I really missed talking to you.” And she should leave before she did something stupid. It wouldn't be fair to Stacey if she tried something now, while she was still uncertain about them. "So where exactly do you live now? It just occurred to me I don't if it's too far from me and Ellie."
Stacey Evans "But that finish line is there." Stacey insisted, as she leaned more forward over the table. "Okay you can't see it right now, but it's there and it exists." Her lips formed a big smile. "This isn't a race, not a sprint, it's a marathon. Okay there's a deadline, but you can still take your time with this. And all good athletes have a good support system and so do you." And she booped her ex on the nose.
She shook her head, a small amused smile on her face. "I'd never do that to you. Because I lo-" She cut herself off and swallowed hard, but her eyes stayed locked to Mila's. "Yeah… call me. Any time." Stacey let out a little laugh. "And we can talk about whatever you want." Which brought back so many memories of when they first got together and they'd stay up all night talking about everything and nothing.
Their fingers didn't tangle together, but Stacey still left her hand there. "I missed talking to you too." They shouldn't be doing this, they really really shouldn't. It was too dangerous. But it seemed neither of them wanted to stop. "Oh well I moved in with Ali and Jake like less than a week ago, I'm sure you know where that is because you hang out with Ali a lot." Which meant she would still be seeing Mila, a lot.
Mila Holliday Mila’s heart stuttered at Stacey’s almost-confession, the words leaving a faint echo in her mind. A small, genuine smile tugged at her lips, her gaze dropping briefly before meeting Stacey’s again. “Oh, yeah I know where they live. I just thought you guys got a new apartment together,” she shrugged lightly, a hint of something unspoken in her eyes. “It's near my place so I’m not complaining.”
Her eyes flickered to where their hands almost touched, fingers so close yet still apart. It was such a subtle, yet electrifying feeling and she had to remind herself not to lean into it.
“I’ll call. Not just for thesis rants either— I promise,” she added softly, voice genuine. “You’re right, the finish line’s there. And… thanks for sticking around, for all of it.” She gave a small chuckle, trying to lighten the moment. “But uh, we’ll see about the support system thing when I call you at 3 a.m. complaining about not getting the reference pages right.”
She tilted her head, smile softening. “Ali and Jake are cool, good people to be around. I’m glad you’ve got them.” Mila’s phone buzzed on the table and she glanced down at the screen. A look of reluctance crossed her face as she saw the name flashing. “Ah, I’ve got to take this,” she said, a tinge of regret in her voice as she looked back up at Stacey.
Standing up, she gave Stacey an apologetic smile and picked up her bag. "I'll text you later, ba- ok?"With one last look, she turned away, already lifting the phone to her ear as she headed for the door. “Hey, yeah… I’m on my way,” she said into the receiver, voice fading as she disappeared through the door.

ABOUT MILA
Mila Belle Holliday grew up surrounded by creativity, intellect, and love. Her mother, Holly Holliday, was once a shining star on the big screen, landing her breakout role in a blockbuster film at just 20. The world quickly fell in love with Holly’s charm, and two years later, she was cast in a high-stakes fantasy TV series that became a cultural phenomenon. However, after the show concluded, Holly chose a different path. Over the years, she found herself disliking how rarely she saw her first child. By the time Mila was born, Holly had become a professor at Pacific State University (PSU) to allow more time for her family, ensuring she was present for dinners, weekends, and any important moments in their lives.
Mila's father, a renowned director, was busier, but he made the effort to be present as much as he could. He provided a world steeped in culture, literature, and music. He played records for Mila and her siblings as they sat together and discussed poetry or the craft of film. When he was shooting a film out of town, he would take them with him as much as possible so he wouldn’t go too many weeks without seeing his children. His influence, alongside her mother’s, nurtured a deep intellectual curiosity in Mila, a love for the arts, and a sense of independence. Chess and checkers were their bonding activities, but it was her father’s storytelling and poetry recitations that truly captivated her imagination. Mila found solace in these quiet moments, away from the public eye, shaping her into someone who values depth, introspection, and meaningful connections.
After completing her undergraduate studies in architecture with a focus on sustainability, Mila chose to further her education by enrolling in a master’s program. Recognizing that her financial security made it unnecessary for her to work, Mila decided to volunteer part-time at ShelterBuild, a nonprofit organization dedicated to building homes for the homeless and promoting sustainable living. She chose this path because she felt that not having a reason to get out of bed in the morning could deepen her tendency toward depression. Mila’s sensitivity allows her to perceive the world in all its complexity and it can be pretty overwelming. She finds that engaging in meaningful work helps her navigate these overwhelming feelings and maintain a sense of purpose.
In her personal life, Mila is known for her thoughtful and introspective nature. She approaches relationships with the same depth and care that she applies to her work, valuing genuine connections and meaningful conversations. Her friends and family appreciate her ability to listen attentively and offer insightful perspectives. Mila prefers quality over quantity in her relationships, often forming close-knit bonds with a few trusted individuals. Her quiet strength and compassion make her a reliable and supportive partner and friend, qualities that enhance both her personal and professional life. As she navigates her career and personal relationships, Mila remains grounded by her values and the nurturing influence of her family.

FAMILY BACKGROUND
The Holliday family is one of Hollywood's most recognizable names, but their fame isn’t just a product of their success—it’s also a reflection of their values. Holly Holliday, the matriarch, shot to stardom when she was just 20, thanks to a blockbuster film that became a cultural phenomenon. A few years later, she secured a role in a highly acclaimed TV show, which solidified her place in the entertainment world. However, at the height of her career, Holly made the rare decision to step away from the spotlight. After her show ended, she retired to focus on raising her children, choosing motherhood over further fame. This decision shaped the family dynamic. Holly continued to stay involved in the arts by becoming a drama professor at Pacific State University. Meanwhile, Henry, a famous director known for his poetic and artistic sensibilities, provided a rich cultural environment at home. His love for poetry, literature, cinema, and timeless music was a key aspect of the family's life. Though he was frequently busy with film projects, he made it a point to involve his family in his work. From taking his children to filming locations to teaching them about storytelling and creativity, his influence on their lives was as profound as his cinematic work. The Holliday home was filled with vinyl records, bookshelves brimming with poetry, and conversations about the nuances of art, leaving a lasting impact on his children. The family’s fame, coupled with their deliberate efforts to create a grounded home life, set them apart from most Hollywood families. They managed to stay away from the chaos of the tabloids while still being public figures. With both parents leading by example—Holly through her dedication to both family and her career in education, and Henry through his dedication to both his craft and his family—the Holliday family is known for balancing glamour and intellect.
