A brilliantly-colored parakeet; males have a plum-colored head while females have grayish-blue head. Endemic to the Indian subcontinent where it can occur in any well-wooded area outside NE India and the high Himalayas. The plum-headed parakeet (Psittacula cyanocephala) is a parakeet in the family Psittacidae. Photo of the Day – The Plum-headed Parakeet (Psittacula cyanocephala) is a mainly green parrot endemic to the Indian subcontinent. This gregarious and noisy species is most often found in flocks – the males sporting the “plum” head seen here, while the female’s is grey.
The awesome photo was taken by Adam Riley in India.

July 2, 2014 - Plum-headed Parakeet (Psittacula cyanocephala)
Requested by: thesassybirder
Plum-headed Parakeets are found in forests and open woodlands of Sri Lanka and parts of India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bhutan. They roost communally and travel in small groups. Their diet is made up of fruits, flower petals, and grains. The females have a gray head without the black stripe seen on the males. These birds nest in tree cavities, where the female incubates the eggs and cares for the chicks. They are kept as pets and can learn to mimic human speech fairly well.
