i begged God, i was willing to suffer the mortifying ordeal of being seen for the wonderful experience of being known. God sent me someone to see and know me. it is horrifying; it is wonderful. you cannot return to God with your ego intact; you cannot be intimate with another person either. a friend holds my hand and tells me it's okay and i think, 'these are the literal hands of Jesus.'
i am grateful to be uncomfortable; i am grateful to bare my soul to the cold wind. i reach my hands out; i touch the world ungloved. my hands and my lips are instruments of the Divine and i can touch people with them. so i will, i will, i will.

i read a quite interesting book in my undergrad by a Jewish scholar on how the binding of isaac is a subversion of pagan myths about sacrificing children for the prosperity of your nation, in proving quite definitively that this is something God doesnt and will never want. and he went on to talk about how by reading this story as foreshadowing of Jesus' crucifixion, Christians actually revert back to the pagan myth of blood sacrifice being skewered in the first place!
which i think is entirely true - unless we understand Jesus to be God, in which case it's fundamentally flipping the script all over again. it's no longer 'humans scramble to kill their children to appease an angry God', it's 'God is willing to be vulnerable and die for the sake of reconciling with wayward humans'. it smashes the idea we need human sacrifice to appease an angry God because that angry God does not exist; he's too busy being found in human form and dying miserably to reach out to his children. the crucifixion is not an offering to God; it's an offering by God. God is the subject, not the object. anyway that's just Reason #43784 why a robust understanding of the Trinity is good and helpful and not just abstract theology
#now tbf many people do understand Jesus to be God and still push penal substitutionary atonement constantly#which i dont even think is an inherently bad or useless lens for looking at it (in the same way that say even tho we dont#believe God ever truly abandons someone there is something emotionally true in the psalmist's cry of dereliction etc)#but i think generally it's not helpful bc it divides the Father against the Son and makes God seem a bit incoherently two-faced#christianity#christian#religion#theology

Revisiting the Psalmist
How to read the psalms by Tremper Longman III (2nd edition) The first edition of this book was published in 1988 and it was one of the books I dipped into when I was studying the psalms at bible college. I have been therefore intrigued to read this edition. Tremper says he wants this book will “encourage the next generation of readers to understand and love this book of songs, poems and…

In the Corridors of My Mind
When you look at me, what do you see? What thoughts linger in your mind? Do I matter in your world, truly? Why am I so hard to find?
Stuck inside my own small space, No one knows how deep I go, They see only what I let them face, Not the depths I dare not show.
Life feels unbearably heavy, hard, I lift others while I fall apart, Believing God will heal and guard, My fractured mind and aching heart.
I want to be what I'm called to be, But fear grips tight and won't let go, Why am I here? Do I bring you glee? Or am I just a fleeting shadow?
Why do I care so much, so deep? I wish to let this burden fly, Hurt and broken, I barely sleep, Yearning for my soul to sigh.
Can I quit, just stop the fight? Curl up, cry, and drift away, The healing journey's blinding light, Hurts more than trauma's darkest day.
A tangled mess, unworthy, lost, Love's touch feels so far and cold, Done with battles, at what cost? I want to clock out, let go, fold.
Disappear, fade, and be forgotten, Is that a wish too far to dream? To leave behind this heart so rotten, And find peace in a tranquil stream.

The Lines by James R. Coggins
I remember reading Psalm 16 many years ago, probably in the King James Version, and wondering what the phrase meant that “the lines” had fallen to the psalmist “in pleasant places” (Psalm 16:6). What lies behind this phrase is some history dating back several hundred years. When the Israelites had gained control of the Promised Land, the land was divided up among families by lot. That is, a…
