Holy Land Retrospective - Day 9

PHOTO 40: The last morning in the Holy Land, and already the group was dispersed. Some left to go to Petra and Jordan, and others were going to Haifa for the day before catching flights. I had two places I wanted to visit before setting off for the ordeal of Tel Aviv airport: my Dominican brothers at their priory and church of St Stephen, and the Holy Sepulchre of course. 

At 6 a.m., I arrived at the church of the Holy Sepulchre, and walking through the doors, I looked at the ancient graffiti engraved on the door frame. This part of the church dates to the 12th-century; the Crusaders had regained the city of Jerusalem on 15 July 1099. In the bottom left, there is a medieval heraldic shield carved into the stone, and all over the stone surface there are crosses and inscriptions; each a signature and a prayer of sorts.

On my last day in the Holy City, I empathised with this impulse to leave one’s mark behind. Because the holy sites and especially this church of the Holy Sepulchre had made such an impression on my heart – I had even briefly considered getting one of those ancient tattoos that medieval pilgrims would get! – one felt the desire to reciprocate. But I knew better than to deface the ancient surfaces! So, I just ran my fingers over the stone, and took some detailed photos of the church. Every time I look at these photos now the memories and impressions return, but so does the yearning to go back to Jerusalem.  

PHOTO 41: The Empty Tomb of Christ draws pilgrims from all over the world, and the flagstones of this courtyard are worn smooth by the countless feet who have crossed this threshold. Like the three women who came to the tomb that first Easter morning, these sisters had also come early this morning for Holy Mass. Having encountered the Risen Lord in the Eucharist, they are now leaving the church of Holy Sepulchre, sent out to preach the risen Christ.

“Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise."And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest.” – Luke 24:6-9

The sight of these Missionaries of Charity in their familiar and distinctive habits – sisters whose congregation I have worked with in every city where I’ve ministered and lived – was a happy sight. As a relatively new religious congregation in the Church (established in 1950) their presence in this ancient historical place that is at the centre of our Faith spoke to me of the vitality of Christ’s holy Church.

They also reminded me that we do not come to the Holy Land, nor to the Empty Tomb in order to stay and linger here in Jerusalem. Rather, this is just the beginning. It is right and fitting and proper that we are sent away from this place, and that we should disperse to every corner of the world, so that the presence of the risen Lord and his divine mercy should fill the world. 

"Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem.” You are witnesses of these things.” – Luke 24:46-48

PHOTO 42: These lamps are among the first things one sees upon entering the church of the Holy Sepulchre. Eight of them hang above the stone of anointing, the place where Jesus’s body was anointed after he was taken down from the Cross, and before he was laid in the tomb. Like all the lamps that are kept alight in this church, they are a sign of the prayers and hopes of so many people offered up to God constantly in this holy place. However, the lamps also make me think of the light of faith. 

For many pilgrims, coming to the Empty Tomb, and seeing the holy sites of the Holy Land revives our faith. Like the first disciples, perhaps we too are afraid and despondent. Perhaps, we too need to go and see the place where they had laid him: “Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.” (Mt 28:5-6) 

But for others it is enough to have the witness of Scripture for God’s Word is “a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” (Ps 119:105) Hence St John says: “the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not know the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.” (Jn 20:8-9) This suggests that those who know the Scriptures do not need to go and see for themselves. Christians who cannot travel all the way to the Holy Land are not disadvantaged because we can and should receive the light of faith wherever we are, in our own homes and in our local churches. 

Therefore, we can pray God that the light of faith should be kindled by the Holy Spirit, and kept burning in the lamps of our hearts. Like these lamps that burn constantly in the Holy Sepulchre church over the stone of anointing, may the Holy Spirit anoint us and fill us with the light of faith. As Pope Francis said:  

“Faith, received from God as a supernatural gift, becomes a light for our way, guiding our journey through time. On the one hand, it is a light coming from the past, the light of the foundational memory of the life of Jesus which revealed his perfectly trustworthy love, a love capable of triumphing over death. Yet since Christ has risen and draws us beyond death, faith is also a light coming from the future and opening before us vast horizons which guide us beyond our isolated selves towards the breadth of communion. We come to see that faith does not dwell in shadow and gloom; it is a light for our darkness.” – Lumen Fidei, 4.

PHOTO 43: It was time to go and meet my fellow Dominicans, who have a priory and school close to the Damascus Gate where St Stephen the protomartyr of the Church was stoned to death for preaching the Gospel.

“And as they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he knelt down and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them." And when he had said this, he fell asleep. And Saul was consenting to his death. And on that day a great persecution arose against the church in Jerusalem; and they were all scattered throughout the region of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. Devout men buried Stephen, and made great lamentation over him.” (Acts 7:59–8:2)

The Scriptures mention, then, that St Stephen was buried, and the site was outside the walls of Jerusalem, on the north side where there was an ancient cemetery. Amazingly, this site is now home to the Dominican friars in Jerusalem. 

For the Friars Preachers (as Dominicans are formally known) returned to Jerusalem in 1890, and they fittingly established themselves in the burial place of the first martyred preacher of the Resurrection, St Stephen! The French Dominicans set up the French School of the Bible and Archaeology on this site where, in 439, a great basilica had been built in honour of St Stephen by the Empress Eudoxia. The complex as it now stands is known as the Ecole Biblique and at its heart is this basilica church built in 1900 on the same ground plan as the 5th-century basilica that had once stood here. Large swathes of the original mosaic floor still survives in this new church of St Stephen along with some relics of the protomartyr – the major relics were taken to Rome. 

I was warmly welcomed by the friars and given a quick tour of the complex, which included a quick look at the archival photographs of 19th-century Jerusalem; the library and archaeological collection of the school; the ancient mosaics of the 5th-century basilica; and, most astonishingly, a complex of underground stone-hewn tombs that pre-date the time of Christ! 

But time was running out, so I made my way back to the hotel, bypassing the church of the Holy Sepulchre one final time. 

PHOTO 44: Returning to the church of the Holy Sepulchre just after midday, the church was full of people. This was my first time here at the height of the day, and there was no time to join the line of people waiting to go up to Calvary. So I knelt at the stone of anointing, placing my Rosary on it, particularly a new silver medal of the Jerusalem Cross that I had added to my Rosary; I have a custom of adding medals from my pilgrimages to my Rosary. 

Walking to the Rotunda where the Aedicule is, I saw this wonderful sight: beams of light shone through the oculus into this most holy place where the Empty Tomb of Christ is. I recalled these words from the Easter Vigil:

“May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds!”

With some sadness, I tore myself away from this sight, from this place redolent with the smell of incense, and thronging with people from diverse cultures, languages, and nations. And we were all here separated and dispersed in many ways but fundamentally united by one living and indivisible faith: Christ is risen!

"This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this which you see and hear.” – Acts 2:32-33.

PHOTO 45: Walking back to the hotel, I looked down at the ancient stones that paved the street, taking in the antiquity of this city, and wondering again how many had come here before me; how many more would tread this path to the Holy Sepulchre. As I walked through the Jaffa Gate for the last time, I saw this man sitting in the shade in a nook against the city wall. 

Something about his look seemed timeless and classic, and the stones around him spoke to me of permanence and endurance. Somehow, I became aware of my own transience and little place in history. I was humbled before all that Jerusalem stood for. 

And yet, the Lord astonished his disciples with these words, sobering words but full of hope for our times: 

"You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another, that will not be thrown down." As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, "Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?" And Jesus answered them, "Take heed that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, `I am the Christ,' and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars; see that you are not alarmed; for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places: all this is but the beginning of the birth-pangs. "Then they will deliver you up to tribulation, and put you to death; and you will be hated by all nations for my name's sake. And then many will fall away, and betray one another, and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because wickedness is multiplied, most men's love will grow cold. But he who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all nations; and then the end will come.” – Mt 24:2-14

Lord, grant by your grace that I shall endure in faith unto the end!

·         SWMRS geared up to release a live video of “Too Much Coffee,” recorded at Orange Vélodrom in France. The world premiere was last Wednesday, and the band also held a live Q&A leading up to its release.

·         Halsey took to Instagram to finally reveal the tracklisting for her upcoming album Manic. She also opened up on why her anticipated collab with Bring Me the Horizon was missing, and dropped two new singles, “Finally // beautiful stranger” and a track with BTS’ Suga.

·         Motionless in White dropped a tear-jerking new music video for their track “Another Life,” taken off their latest album Disguise. Directed by Max Moore, the imagery follows a broken love story as a gentleman replays sweet memories he and his partner shared together.

·         Fall Out Boy dropped a new animated music video for “Bob Dylan,” taken from their most recent album endeavor Believers Never Die – Volume Two. According to Billboard, the track was originally a B-side for American Beauty/American Psycho.

·         Waterparks’ hit track “Dream Boy” got an EDM retouching courtesy of producer and DJ, JVNA. The band praised the remix on their social media accounts last Wednesday, with the producer also sharing her hype for the new remix.

·         Machine Gun Kelly announced a rock album for 2020 and said a new song would release by the end of this year. Collaborations with Goody Grace, Blink-182’s Travis Barker, blackbear and Attila‘s Chris Fronzak also seem to be on the horizon.

·         Billie Eilish made her directorial debut on the much-anticipated music video for her hit “Xanny.” As per usual, the video has a few jarring visuals and some disturbing movements, but is overall pretty straightforward.

·         Pure Noise Records released Keep Shining On last Friday, a tribute album featuring the songs of Tim Landers, the late guitarist/vocalist of Transit. The six-song mini-LP features Landers’ songs performed by Man Overboard, the Story So Far, Elder Brother, Casa Loma and Misser.

·         Scene veterans The Used returned with a new single and video, “Blow Me”. The song and video both feature Jason Aalon Butler of Fever 333, and the band is currently working on their eighth full-length album.

·         Blink-182 dropped a new Christmas track, “Not Another Christmas Song,” highlighting the downsides of the holiday season and causing a raucous on the North Pole. The accompanying music video is a claymation of the band performing the song for elves.

·         Selfish Things dropped the music video for their song “Torn,” which also features Spencer Chamberlain of Underoath. The video takes inspiration from the old silent films, with slides describing the action.

·         Blink-182 and the Chainsmokers’ official collab release came nearly an entire year after it was initially teased by the latter group. The song, “PS I Hope You’re Happy,” was announced on the Chainsmokers’ social media pages.

TOUR ANNOUNCEMENTS:    

·         5 Seconds of Summer recently announced a U.K. and European tour, and also launched an album pre-order for a release that hasn’t been revealed yet. The band took to Twitter to remind fans of the new package, which comes with early access to the No Shame 2020 Tour dates.

·         Coheed and Cambria announced on Instagram even more bands joining them for their 2020 cruise aboard the S.S. Neverender. Thrice, Power Trip, Sheer Mag, Radkey, Hail the Sun, and Peelander-Z were also announced.

·         Hayley Williams of Paramore is bringing back the Sanctuary of Self Love to the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival next summer. This is the second year the iconic Williams will be curating the plaza, which was a mega-hit last year.

·         Scary Kids Scaring Kids revealed they will be bringing along Secrets and Push Over on their upcoming reunion tour. The tour kicks off in January, with tickets and VIP packages available for purchase now.

·         Third Eye Blind announced they are going to be joined by Saves the Day on the second leg of their headlining tour in support of their latest album, Screamer. The tour kicks off March 11th in Seattle, and its announcement arrives alongside the news they’re also launching a new podcast.

·         Twenty One Pilots’ Bandito Tour secured a spot on Billboard’s year-end lists as one of the top-grossing tours of 2019. The top spot went to pop singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran, who grossed $223.6 million with 2,587,445 fans attending 54 total shows on his Divide Tour.

·         Knuckle Puck announced an intimate U.S. club tour that will run in spring 2012. The tour kicks off at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago on February 21st and ends at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis on March 22nd.

·         The latest My Chemical Romance show to be revealed is one with Thursday in Osaka, Japan. MCR previously revealed the band will support them on their forthcoming reunion in Los Angeles on December 20th.

OTHER NEWS:  

·         Musician Juliet Simms revealed her casting in the upcoming American Satan TV spin-off, Paradise City. With news of Sleeping with Sirens frontman Kellin Quinn joining the cast over the summer, the spinoff was first announced in June 2018 with the film’s cast teasing their return.

·         Fever 333 announced the first signing to their own label, 333 Wreckords Crew. They introduced the Nova Twins, the London-based duo of vocalist/guitarist Amy Love and bassist Georgia South, who are two black women in rock music twisting the convention of a genre.

·         My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way announced he is dropping the final issue of his brother Mikey Way‘s first comic, Collapser. The final issue ends the series, which began back in April and marked the first comic book collab between the two MCR brothers.

·         Angels & Airwaves frontman Tom DeLonge revealed that an older solo track of his titled “Suburban Kings” is about his former band Blink-182. In 2015, just a month after departing the band, DeLonge dropped his first studio album titled To the Stars…Demos, Odds and Ends.

·         Former Lostprophets bassist Stuart Richardson opened up about his time working with ex-vocalist Ian Watkins, who has been convicted of several child-related sex crimes. On a recent episode of ‘Sappenin’ Podcast with Sean Smith, he revealed what happened while in the band.

·         Some Spotify users noticed that Brand New have been removed from their #spotifywrapped lists. Many current and former fans speculated that the band have been blacklisted from the site’s stats following their sexual misconduct issues that surfaced in 2017.

·         Rapper Juice WRLD, aka Jarad Anthony Higgins, passed away at the age of 21 after suffering a seizure in a Chicago airport, TMZ reported. In a statement from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office, an autopsy conducted has come up inconclusive regarding Higgins’ death.

Depressed passing guide

I see a lot of passing guides around, and they’re great, but they usually assume you have 100% of your energy to put into passing. For those of us who have like 24 other mental illnesses that make gender dysphoria take the backseat, that’s not always realistic. So here’s some shit I’ve noticed can help you pass that doesn’t take much effort. I’m pre-t FTM so most of these tips will mainly be applicable if you are too.  Ps, you’re not required to pass in order to be “”valid””. Most of us want to and it can be important to stay safe, but remember you’re doing this for you, not the rest of the world.  General : Most pre-t guys will naturally look closest to 12-15 years old if they do pass. I know most of us hate not being treated our age but embracing this will make passing 100x easier. Match your mannerisms to those of teenage boys, and when looking for clothes/hairstyles try to match your perceived age rather than your actual age.  Clothing:  General rule for all clothes: don’t underestimate the kids’ section, and shop online if you can’t find your size. If both of those fail you, you can try to order internationally. Asian men have much smaller frames so clothes from China work great, just be careful not to order from dodgy sites. Tailors are also a good option if you can afford them.  Never get your jeans in the women’s section. They’ll be cut to accentuate your hips 99% of the time. If you can find men’s or boys’ jeans that fit your hips, straight leg is best. If you can’t, don’t sweat it you have other options. 

Sweatpants/joggers are great. They’ll go past your hips without issue because of the elastic, and if you don’t already pass nobody will look at you weird for going into the mens section to buy what’s widely recognised as very fucking comfortable clothing. Get a pair that’s looser on top and tighter on the bottom if you can, it keeps you from looking like a total slob. Stick to dark colours as they’ll slim down your hips.  For t-shirts, get something slim fit/athletic fit, and get it as close to your size as possible. Aside from your chest, your arms are the most obvious sign you’re not cis on your upper half. Getting shirts with tighter arm holes will give the illusion that you’re muscly, or at least not a total string bean. Once again, stick to dark colours. Large colour differences between your top and bottom half will draw a line across your body, making you look shorter. Graphic tees are a hit or miss. They can help conceal your chest and they fit the teenage boy look, but since they’re unisex they could end up making you look like a tomboy.    Avoid flannel, it’s associated with butch lesbians and could make people think you are one too.

Hoodies are a lifesaver. They’re easy to layer with (especially the zip-up kind) which will help conceal your chest. Rolling up the sleeves to your elbows makes them hug your arms tightly, making them look more muscular. Putting up the hood will make you look masculine, or at least hide feminine features somewhat. If you’re too small for men’s jackets, layering a zip-up hoodie with a (faux) leather jacket will look masculine and mimic the style a lot of men’s jackets have.  Binding: 

First of all, if you’re going to bind, be as safe as possible (there’s always risks, keep that in mind). 8 hours a day MAXIMUM (and maximum does not mean that that’s an allowance you need to use up every day), take it off as often as possible, and don’t ever sleep or exercise in your binder. Listen to your body, take a break when it hurts. Don’t bind with ace bandages or tape, just generally avoid homemade binders. And for the love of god, don’t get a cheap amazon/aliexpress/wish/ebay binder. If you bind unsafely, you can break your ribs, permanently deform your rib cage/collarbones, damage your soft tissues (which seriously reduces your chances of getting good top surgery results), permanently reduce your lung capacity, and just generally damage your body so much that you will never be able to bind again. Don’t be stupid.  Gc2b and underworks are the most popular and safest binder brands. Generally speaking, gc2b is better for smaller chests and underworks is better for larger chests.  There are two main styles of binders, tri-top and full tank. Tri-top does everything you need, full tank binders just add more (non-compressive) fabric to the bottom. Tri-top tends to be more comfortable as there’s no extra fabric to bunch up, but if you want your binder to be subtle if you have to change in front of people/are wearing a tight shirt, getting something that looks like a tank top is your best bet.  Gc2b binders are available in a range of colours, while underworks offers black, white and beige binders. I decided to get a binder that matched my skin colour since I could only afford one and I didn’t want it to show through any clothing. I HIGHLY regret it. Cis men do not wear skin coloured garments under their shirts. If your collar slips up in the slightest, there’s an obvious sign that you’re trans. Cis men DO wear undershirts though, so get a binder that’s the same colour as an undershirt (usually white but black works too).  Some trans men use kt tape to bind, and transtape is a product made specifically to improve upon kt tape binding. Mind you, putting tape on your skin is very fucking bad for it and you will likely get blisters, as well as risk losing skin elasticity (something that’s important to retain if you want top surgery). Only do this as a last resort if you’re in a situation where regular binders are even more unsafe or would out you, such as while traveling. Look up how to apply it properly first and remove it VERY carefully.  Hair: If you want long hair that’s your choice, and some trans men do pass with long hair. But keep in mind even square-jawed cis men will get misgendered from the back if they have long hair. If you’re not okay with regularly getting she’d, keep it short until you’re on t for a while. 

If you have yet to get your hair cut short, a barber may refuse to cut you. Some of them really do only work with men/boys and if you don’t pass, you’ll be turned away. Just go to a unisex salon, if you don’t want to out yourself then find a picture of a woman with a masculine haircut. Show them that, then get them to make it even more masculine (ask for your sideburns or “the bits on the side” squared, it makes a world of difference). You’ll be able to go to a barber for your next haircut after that.  Resist the urge to get a buzzcut. It’s very low maintenance but it makes your face shape extremely apparent, you will look feminine.  Get your hair as short as you can stand on the sides and leave some length on top. If you get the sides really short, you should only have to brave your social anxiety every two months orso to get a new cut. Style the top upwards with some product (wax, gel, whatever). Your face will look less round if you do this.  To avoid talking to your barber and possibly outing yourself, just find a picture of the haircut you want and show it to them. I’ve found barbers are far less chatty than people at unisex salons so you’ll probably be okay just not speaking.  Wash your hair as little as possible. Don’t let it get greasy, but allow it to build up some texture. Cis men’s hair is a lot rougher and less silky than cis women’s, so you want to mimic that. Throw your conditioner in the trash.  For body hair, leave it alone as much as possible. Don’t touch your eyebrows, either. Let them get bushy, don’t pluck any stray hairs. You can fill in your eyebrows to make them look thicker but I’d recommend against using makeup in any form as a trans man, it’s hard to make it look subtle and people will instantly think you’re a woman if they notice you’re wearing it.  You can shave your face if you want to, but it’s honestly a waste of time. Your skin will look softer without the peach fuzz, which is the opposite of what you want to achieve. Hair doesn’t grow back thicker after you shave it, so don’t bother doing it for that reason. Body composition: Dysphoria TW for mention of biological sex.  A lot of guides make a major point of this. Work out 5 days a week, eat as little as possible, get your body fat percentage down. One of the most popular guides there is for FTMs even suggests you get down below 20% body fat, acknowledging that that’d be an unacceptable advice for cis women but going on to say it’s okay because we aren’t cis women.  My advice on this is to do your best to shut THAT advice out. Our bodies are (unfortunately) female, they play by female rules. The notion that we can (and should!) starve and exercise our way into a male body is harmful and wrong. Having a female looking body isn’t a personal failure or a sign that you’re not working hard enough, it’s an unavoidable consequence of BEING physically female.  Building muscle helps. Lower bodyfat helps. If you’re overweight and can manage to go on a diet, go for it. If you can start working out, go for it! Just don’t sweat it if you can’t for whatever reason. I promise it’s still possible to pass.  Mannerisms

Sit with your legs open. Manspread a little. You want to be sitting in a way that would get old ladies tutting if a lady in a dress did it, but don’t go so far that you’re doing the splits.  If you want to cross your legs, do it with your ankle on your leg. Crossing your legs too tightly will crush the dick you want people to think you have.  Walk with your legs slightly apart, and try not to sway your hips. Visualise having something between your legs that you’re trying not to crush (because cis men do).  Put your hands in your pockets as much as possible. Standing with your hands in your pockets basically draws a straight line down your body, minimising the appearance of your hips. It also makes you look like a bored teenager so it’s perfect.  Don’t smile too much, especially not in pictures. If you do smile, smirk. Try to look cocky.  Cis men have stronger brow bones and eyebrows closer to their eyes. You can mimic this by frowning mildly.  There are tons of voice training techniques you can look up to get your voice to go deeper, but to be honest it’s a lot of effort. You need to actually put force behind your voice to get it to come from your chest, and god knows I’m too depressed to do that 90% of the time. I’m fond of the “never fucking speak to anyone” technique and it works out just fine.  Confidence is absolutely the most important part. If you’re showing that you’re sure of yourself and act like you being a man is the most natural, obvious thing ever, people are unlikely to doubt you. If they do doubt you, just laugh it off. Act like the notion of you being anything but male is ridiculous. I don’t even do all the things in this guide. SENRAN KAGURA Peach Beach Splash Localization Blog #2

Peach Beach Splash, being what looks like the girls' last lighthearted adventure before the looming events of the next big game in the series, is a good place to stop and look back at the series as a whole. For me, that means looking back at my own experiences in working on the series, and what I've learned along the way.

I started at XSEED a few weeks before SENRAN KAGURA Burst launched in North America. Despite being only a T-rated game (no, really, Burst was rated T!), it was easily the raunchiest title we'd ever published, and none of us knew how Western audiences would react. We had an office betting pool over how many copies would sell in its opening week, and I bet on the highest number and won lunch at Yogurtland. (Come to think of it, I don't think I ever cashed that in. I'll have to talk to Ken about that later.)

Fans of series creator Takaki-san might know that he didn't originally plan on Burst having a sequel — in fact, while developing the original story, he considered killing all the characters off. Thankfully, the final draft let the Hanzō and Hebijo girls live to fight another day, and before long, he and his team started work on SENRAN KAGURA Shinovi Versus.

By the time Burst launched, we were already looking forward to publishing Shinovi Versus in North America, especially after seeing the success of the first game. About half the office worked on localizing Shinovi Versus in one capacity or another, with Jason and Junpei on translation, Tom and myself taking care of the editing (Tom on the Crimson Squad storyline, me on most of the rest), and Brittany as our go-to continuity consultant.

Shinovi Versus wasn't just my first XSEED localization project, but also my first project where every line of dialogue was voiced over in another language. That, among other factors, gradually changed the way I approached localization in general.

When I worked on my very first localization project overall, all the way back in 2005 for a different publisher, the general directive from up above was to be accurate to the story and the characterization (the localization test I took included the line, "Don't add a reference to a giant ogre if there isn't one in the original text"), but also to make the text as enjoyable to read in English as possible. Of course, since Japanese and English have markedly different styles and cadences, there often comes a point where accuracy and enjoyability diverge, and an editor has to bite the bullet and prioritize one over the other. At the time, the decisions more often came down on the side of enjoyability, as long as it didn't outright contradict the original text.

For that project in particular, since there was a huge amount of text in the first several hours of gameplay, we were encouraged to add more humor in the early going (when possible, and when reasonably appropriate within the context of the scene). If a line flat-out didn't make sense — which does happen sometimes, when a lengthy, sprawling script gets written long before the game gets made — we were more or less free to replace it with a line of our own invention (again, as long as it fit the context).

That sort of approach, where the Japanese text was considered more of a guideline than a baseline, was common at the time, and it stuck with me through many other projects over the next eight years. When writing for a wide audience, who usually just wanted to enjoy the game in English, that worked out fine most of the time. When writing for anyone who knew the Japanese...not so much.

For those who know the language, even a little bit, it's immersion-breaking to hear one line and read another, and of course, if an editor takes too many liberties with a voiced-over script, that comes up all the time. The first draft of my work on Shinovi Versus was as compelling as I could make it, but didn't always pay as much attention to the Japanese as it should have, and while the finished draft usually conveyed the same sentiment as the original, there were more than a few differences bilingual players would've found jarring. (The "Shiki speaking French" stuff is a whole other topic. She speaks English in PBS. Let's leave it at that for now. :p)

A few weeks before turning in the final draft, we sat down as a team, discussed whether we wanted to prioritize accuracy or English flavor moving forward, settled on the side of accuracy, and gave the script a polish, paring down some of the excess liberties. While I missed some of the lines I'd come up with, I remembered that sometimes, writing collaboratively means letting go of your darlings for the overall good of the project. The resulting dialogue stuck much closer to the voiceovers than before, and since then, I've done the best I can to apply the lessons I've learned.

That's not to say that writing "within the lines" can't be fun, of course. We've mentioned this a few times before, but SENRAN KAGURA'S characters are all bursting with personality, and their lines are full of opportunities to bring those personalities out in distinctive and memorable ways — usually by taking what's already there and, when appropriate for the scene, just running with it. Every time Mirai freaks out, Homura gets fired up, Ryōbi curses up a storm, or Shiki cuts loose, it feels a lot like cutting loose ourselves, and that's one of the reasons I've loved working on the series, from Shinovi Versus to Bon Appétit, Deep Crimson, Estival Versus, and now Peach Beach Splash.

If you're as nostalgic about the series as I am (has it really been five years already?), you'll like the retrospective Blu-Ray disc we've put together for the physical "No Shoes, No Shirt, All Service" limited edition of Peach Beach Splash. The disc features the animated intros from Skirting Shadows (the very first game, which was released by itself in Japan before later being expanded and rereleased as part of Burst), Burst, Shinovi Versus, and so on up to Peach Beach Splash. (For licensing reasons, we couldn't get the original song from the Skirting Shadows intro, but there's another track from Burst's OST that ended up fitting with it well, so the disc version of the intro uses that track instead.) The game's physical edition also includes an artbook — twice as long as the Japanese artbook, with many more pictures to enjoy — as well as a soundtrack CD. We also have a digital limited edition, the "Sexy Soaker" edition, up for pre-order now on the PS Store; no Blu-Ray with that one, but if you pre-order, there're a couple of exclusive themes in it for you. I know there are other factors such as smokers/obese people, lawsuits, and people who don't pay their bills. Unlike if someone was actually paying out of pocket and would actually say your out of your mind for charging that much, you won't get my business . I mean, seriously, even if doctors charged $70 per hour, thats still a high wage for them, and it wouldn't be too unreasonable for an hour of medical work, yet I hear of doctors performing various simple procedures that take like 5-15 minutes and charging hundreds or possibly thousands of dollars. Same thing with medical equipment. It seems any device classified as a piece of medical equipment sells for 10 times what it should reasonably cost to make it. Any level headed person would say they are insane for charging that much. But insurance companies simply pay it, and pass the cost on to the people. Making it so the people are basically getting ripped off through no choice of their own. And making it so people who don't have insurance simply cannot afford to have any care. PS: Another example of medical equipment. Just look at a hoverround wheelchair I've seen the retail price on those be over $9000, just for a middle class one. I am unemployed at this time due to several psychological issues I will not get into. Medication is too expensive. I need medication in order to be mentally balanced. I started taking Valium & Adderall and both help me feel sane. The only problem is I don't know how much longer I can even afford it!! Anti biotics are so costly as well!    I have a family history of cervical Cancer and I NEED to see a gynecologist for a pap test but cannot afford it! I need dental insurance cause I have cavities but can't afford that either!   I feel hopeless! Can someone give me some hope?

I came to north Carolina at the beginning of August from FL to stay with my aunt while I got my finances in order and she recovered from her back surgery. I plan to stay here until a bit after the new year. When I moved, I arranged to have my mail forwarded while i am here. Also around this time, I started searching for a new insurance provider because my rate had gone up with geico. I decided on progressive. When signing up for progressive, I signed up with my Florida drivers license number and my new nc mailing address. A couple of months later I received a letter from the state of Florida saying that they were notified my geico insurance policy was cancelled and to provide new proof of coverage. I went online and provided the information but apparently made an error when selecting the insurance company name. I accidentally selected protective insurance company instead of progressive. I was made aware of this error when I received a license suspension letter yesterday. Since then I have notified the state of Florida Of the error. I then received notice that my insurance was still not acceptable because Florida requires that if I have a florida registration, i must have a Florida policy. I called my insurance who confirmed that although they provide Florida coverage, I was under a nc policy even though I provided them with a Florida drivers license number since my mailing address was currently nc. I have had no lapse in coverage, but my insurance company cannot switch it back to florida until I am living there again at the beginning of the new year and can provide a valid address of where I will be living. I do not know where I will be living when I get back yet because I will have to find a new place to move into. Does anyone have any advice as to what to do in this situation? We are getting ready to add my stepson to our auto insurance. He does not have a car yet, but when he does get one it will be in his father's name. His mother as far as I know has no auto insurance. Some background first, i was hit from behind whilst stationary in traffic the other week by a works van. the damage was not too sever that i couldn't limp back home (sore and car bashed but still alive) got the other drivers details at the scene and reported the incident to my insurance company. As the accident was not my fault my insurer passed this to their dedicated Non-Fault (NF) accident claim company (i'll not name them at the moment) who in turn provided me with a hire car and collected my car to have it assessed for REPAIR. At no point was writing off the car mentioned. Then i got a call from the garage dealing with my car (NF appointed) a week later telling me of the damage and repair value and that the engineers working for the NF, different company again, were going to deem the car a write off, CAT D as i later found out. Now the fun part - the engineers have made an offer for settlement and to write off of my car, which is a good 500 below what is would cost to replace it with a like-for-like car in my local area (replace cost circa 2.8k-3k) they are adamant they will not repair my car even though the repairs would cost LESS than the write off - because the repair is too close to the market value and they can make a killing on salvage apparently. so fighting this out at the moment. NOW FOR THE QUESTION: They have advised me that should i wish to keep the car after they write it off (which i want to avoid if at all possible) i can accept the settlement and pay them a salvage fee to retain my car. This i understand as technically they buy my car when they write it off and then i have to buy it back. The problem is that they have a flat 30% !!! salvage fee which on their offer would almost negate me being able to get the repairs covered. What i really need to know is if anyone else has been in this position and if there is a maximum salvage fee they can charge - bearing in mind that this is my car to start with - and if there is any way i can make them drop this percentage. Forcing them to drop the percentage might not only let me repair the car after retaining but might also swing in favour of repair instead of write off if they cannot justify such a big payout for themselves. Any help here would be appreciated fast as i'm still bouncing between the parties here to get this resolved. In case your wondering the damage constitutes a bumper rear panel and a kink in the boot floor - VERY repairable.""

Long story short (hopefully)...My 17 yr old step-son got his license just after his b-day last yr and my husband stupidly bought him an undeserved car (we have had nonstop issues with him for over 2 yrs with his disrespectful and insulting/criticizing attitude, refusing to follow house rules, his very poor, negative and selfish behavior on top of his constant lies and his drug and alcohol use and continues to bring it around my 4 yr old son). He completely trashed the car, it reeked of cigarettes and pot, we found empty beer cans and other cans used to smoke his pot. We took the car away and cleaned it the best we could and after a few months of him still continuing his behavior and habits we sold the car. He bullies his mom and sister (always has) and took his moms keys and her car from her and will not return it. I know we are legally responsible for him until he turns 18 which isn't too much longer BUT he is getting worse with everything, my husband has given up on him and just lets him come and go as he pleases and do what he wants (he claims he will kick him out on his bday but no one believes him b/c of many past threats not followed through and his kids know it so they continue to play him), I'm told to stay out of it because he isn't my son yet he is still on MY insurance and driving his mom's car while drinking and smoking pot and continuing not to follow the law with his restrictions either. I can't wait for this ungrateful punk to be out of my house. He constantly badmouths all of us with lies to everyone and blames us when things don't go his way. Forest Paradise

Some say Center Parcs is a middle-class Butlins but that’s not really fair

Ten years ago I visited the Sherwood Forest Center Parcs sans enfants, and my memories were hazy at best. It was bitter February, and I remember my then boyfriend Duncan and myself getting a bit bored as we lounged around the Subtropical Swimming Paradise and tried to navigate riding (read crashing) our bikes through the ice and snow. 

Last weekend we made the trek to Nottinghamshire again – this time with three kids in tow. What I would have given for a little boredom! 

Josie, five, and Tilly, three, could have spent 12 hours a day splashing in the swimming pool, and would have loved an extra week sliding down the new Grand Cascade Raft Ride. Even 18-month-old Clementine took full advantage of the baby water-slides. 

All I wanted was a break – and I got one. Center Parcs really does have something for everyone. Our children are still little, yet they still managed to swim, bowl, do arts and crafts, ride a bike (or be pulled behind one in a tiny trailer), play in the soft play areas, jump around the adventure playground and make enormous DIY ice cream sundaes in one of the many restaurants.

I did what they did – yet still had time to myself in the Aqua Sana and Spa, enjoying a deep tissue massage and an afternoon going from steam room to sauna – thanks to my now husband Duncan. Actually, he was the one who missed out on time alone, but give him a few beers and a good football game (or factual documentary, to give him credit) on telly and he’s one happy man. 

We spent Friday until Monday at Sherwood Forest, and the time flew by. Our executive three-bedroom villa came equipped with its own sauna and three bathtubs, one of which had Jacuzzi jets. Add a bottle of shower gel and presto – the bath is magically transformed into a cauldron of bubbles. 

The girls loved the bathtub, loved having their own bathroom and bedroom suite, loved eating the Coco-pops (which are forbidden at home) which were delivered in our pre-ordered grocery pack. What could be better? 

When they get a bit older we plan to take advantage of activities for older children, such as parasailing, wind-surfing and horse riding. For the moment, though, there was still plenty for them to do and lots for us to enjoy as well. 

Our only real complaint was the weather – a hail shower turned into sleet and then snow, which didn’t stick but made the ground muddy and all the ducks in our garden scurry away. 

Some say that Center Parcs is just a middle-class Butlins, but I think that’s unfair. Sure, the swimming area gets a bit crowded – especially on change-over days – and the food isn’t all that great. But there are no forced activities, no smelly caravans and, remarkably, no lager louts making the evenings hellish for everyone else. 

What you get is a tiny slice of tranquility in a serene forest paradise, with enough to do to keep the kids from climbing out of their skins. The girls are desperate to go back. I reckon that has to be worth something. 

What is it? Center Parcs

Where? We went to the Sherwood Forest Parc in Nottinghamshire but the other Parcs are Longleat Forest near Warminster, the Oasis Whinfell in Cumbria and Elveden Forest in the Brecklands.

On-site activities: Calling it a middle-class Butlins doesn’t really do it justice. Center Parcs has something for everyone.Living in a well-appointed villa in a secluded forest and travelling everywhere by bicycle is my family’s idea of heaven – even in the ice and snow! 

The best bit is you can do as much – or as little – as you want – and you really feel that you are far, far away from it all. Our kids loved the Subtropical Swimming Paradise, a fantastic Balinese-style swimming oasis inside a large bubble – great all year round. Older kids – and adults – can take advantage of everything from rock-climbing to horse-riding, sailing and computer workshops.

The children’s disco is a all-time favourite, and for the more adventurous there’s an adult one as well. The cinema is open in the evenings as is the bowling alley, you can swim until late and visit one of the many restaurants or sports bars. Or just relax by the fire or in your own sauna, as we did…

Fantastic kid’s clubs are available for children aged three months to seven years – Josie and Tilly adored the Christa’s Colourful Creations arts and crafts session. Book in advance!

The Aqua Sana and Spa is truly a place to wind down – especially as nobody under age 14 is admitted. I had a fantastic deep tissue massage and lounged about the many steam rooms and saunas – three hours of pure, unadulterated bliss.

Local activities: Don’t think you’ll want to leave the Parc and venture outside during your stay because you won’t. There is so much to do and the natural area is unspoiled and beautiful. For once, take advantage of your surroundings and just relax.Wish we had known: …that the restaurants aren’t great. 

The food in Luciano’s was passable but it was very crowded and the service was slow, we ate at Huckleberry’s because of the excellent kid’s play area but my sandwich was a bit soggy and unexciting. So we took advantage of the well-stocked food shop and, luckily, had brought a lot of food with us from London. 

The girls loved the bakery counter in the marketplace – and so did I – as well as the free samples of homemade fudge in the Treats shop (and so did I). PS from Kirsty – the restaurants at Longleat are fantastic.

Our top tip: Pack a bag with all your swimming gear and leave it on top of your luggage in the car. That way, it will be easily accessible if you arrive before your villa is ready (normally 3pm). Don’t waste time dragging things out of suitcases and backpacks in the car park.
