Rewatched Pacific Rim Uprising the other day with my sister and god. Just. What a masterpiece of funnybad cinema. Mako’s never-mentioned-before brother is the main character alongside a girlboss teenager whose homemade jaeger curls up in a ball and rolls like Sonic. Mako dresses like a flight attendant now. Drift compatibility is no longer a measure of your connection to another person, instead it’s something you’re ‘good at’ or not. Raleigh died offscreen of cancer years before the movie but this is only addressed in the novels so when you’re watching pru you’re just wondering why no one even mentions him. (There’s a moment after Mako’s death (she died bc her never-mentioned-before brother’s jaeger fumbled the pass on her helicopter lmaooo) where you see a memorial with her, Stacker, and… one of the Russians? Not Raleigh? Why did they not put Raleigh’s face there to at least communicate that he’s dead?) The Jaeger program inexplicably still exists even though there are no kaiju. The government was trying to defund Jaegers in favor of the sea wall even when the kaiju were still around and tearing through the wall like tissue paper on a weekly basis, why are they still funding them when the only demonstrated use case is as oversized cops that can barely navigate a city street. Anathema Device is there just to be the pivot in the world’s blandest love triangle (semi resolved by a winky implication of a polycule? Okay sure I guess). There’s an evil black Jaeger which exists for no reason conceivable outside of Doylist apologia. One of the Cool New Toys Jaegers is just a normal big robot with a spike ball on one arm it looks so fucking stupid. Charlie Day is eating up every scene he’s in and Burn Gorman is having the time of his life elbow deep in kaiju guts. (The two of them and their scenes are genuinely great zero complaints but they’re living in a different movie than the rest of the characters.) (Okay for real I have to address it Newt and Hermann are genuinely so good in this movie 1) for what and 2) fucking how? Why is Hermann mucking around in kaiju entrails He Would Not Fucking Do That but Burn is having so much fun it works somehow. Newt’s wretched fashion sense bad mandarin and shitty plastic sunglasses have bewitched me utterly I need to study him. Elevator cane beatdown. Hermann they’re in my head. The breathless little smile on Newt’s face when he sees Kaiju Voltron (yeah three kaiju turn into one bigger kaiju. Like Voltron. Don’t worry about it).) The monster is trying to blow up the earth by throwing itself into Mount Fuji???

RIP Timothy West (20.10.1934 - 12.11.2024)
"We met when we were cast with small parts in that really boring play, so had both brought the crossword to stop us going mad. We saw each other across the rehearsal room doing it, so decided to sit together. Then we couldn’t record because of the strike one day so we went to the cinema, Pru and I, to see The Grass is Greener with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. The show was cancelled, but a bit later Pru sent me a card saying ‘they’re reviving that terrible play, are you in it?’ I wasn’t but we started writing to each other then."
"Humour is vital, and respect for what people do and what people think. Kindness is important, and we’ve always had the same humour, laughed at the same things, been interested in the same things, got cross about the same things. And been in the same business. We have often been away from each other work-wise and therefore we’re always very glad to see each other again."

Third, and last part of purely book photo session.
Next ones I’ll do tomorrow. There will be some books, but mainly *looks over to a box full of photographs* amateur nude women photography?????? and other stuff I guess.
Here is link to first and second part of this endeavour, and now to books!
Bunch of books:
Tumblr media
This is full trilogy of Władysław Tatarkiewicz “History of Philosophy”, very well known philosophy coursebooks , which is neat and I’m considering keeping it:
Tumblr media
Then we have small portion of book from “Style-Directions-Trends” series from Art and Film Publishers from about 1986:
Tumblr media
This book with cool typography about postmodernism by Marcin Giżycki:
Tumblr media
Another few books from bigger series about art movements:
Tumblr media
Some pamphlet about polish tennis auditions from bbc news radio station, some photographs made by polish youth and history course book for first class of high school. I’m considering doing meme comparison with current most controversial polish history course book “HiT”:
Tumblr media
Now we move to maps, this instance to topographic map of High Tatras, in good condition:
Tumblr media
Moreeeee maps, whole ass map series about Polish Tatras and most popular places:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some books. First one from higher row from left is about Warsaw Uprising, next one about Cinema and revolution of feature films from 1950 to 1959. Then book about America, and last one from higher row eeeee idk, something I’m not interested in. Then in lower row from left: Faraon by Bolesław Prus, well know author and book. I think it was read in high school in those times. Next to it chemistry worksheet for high school and later textbook for economic geography of Poland also for high school, next to it also geography for candidates for higher education:
Tumblr media
As done before, I’ll post rest in reblog.
I hope this adventure through 80s with me is interesting :)))

Now exactly the same (it's a comic about a paramedic) and might be a little hard to find, but:
Code Pru by Garth Ennis and Raulo Caceres (featured in the anthology series Cinema Purgatorio by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill) is a comic series about a paramedic who gets assigned to a special unit that tends to the monsters that live in New York
Tumblr media
The urban fantasy show I actually want to see is a hospital drama with a dedicated wing for supernatural illnesses.
Vampirism. Lycanthropy. Cheap spells gone wrong. A woman brought in for her prenatal has to be told her baby is a lindworm. Someone is literally being followed by the anthropomorphic personification of the Black Death.
Someone somewhere out there is having their perception of the world irreparably shattered by the knowledge that magic is real, and at the other side is a team of doctors who have to roll their eyes and pull out Grimm’s Complete Fairy Tales because some high school kid tried to go Carrie with a cheap spellbook and turn all the kids at prom into frogs, and the doctors have to wrangle a couple dozen teenagers into admitting if they have a true love who can break the spell.

ten faves
Rules: name ten favorite characters from ten different things (tv, movies, books, etc.)
This came from @thegirlwholied nearly...3 weeks...ago now, but I am slow, and indecisive, and time basically has no meaning at the moment anyway, so.
1.       Sally Lockhart (the Sally Lockhart quartet)
First name I wrote down.  I met Sally in my early teens and I’ve never quite given up on wanting to grow up to be her. I love each and every member of Garland and Lockhart a ridiculous amount (and my love of the found family trope can probably be traced back to their door), but Sally, with her grit and her stubbornness and her fierce indepenance, captured me in something special from that moment in the first paragraph of the first book when all I knew was her name and that she was about to kill a man.
2.       Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice)
I considered shying away from the stereotypical here, but that would just be lying to myself as well as anyone else.  I relate more to Jane, or Charlotte Lucas, or even Mr Darcy – at least in terms of social awkwardness, not finances, sadly – but, like him, I can’t remember the first time I fell in love with Lizzy Bennet, I was in the middle of it before I even knew I had begun.
(Jennifer Ehle probably had something to do with it though.)
3.       Hermione Granger (Harry Potter)
Look, I was an introverted, bookish, rule-abiding adolescent, and Hermione was suddenly someone I could recognise myself in.  I wanted to be Ginny (and Sally, and Lizzy, and several others on this list); I already was Hermione, in a lot of ways, and she made that a bit more ok.
4.      Carrot Ironfoundersson (Discworld)
I wanted to put a Discworld character in here, and I’m a little bit sad at myself for not picking a woman – especially since this is inadvertently turning out to be a very female-heavy list.  I even started the process of trying to choose between Sybil Ramkin, Tiffany Aching, Adora Belle Dearheart, and Angua, to name but a few.
But the thing is, I made the fatel error of first trying to read the Discworld in publication order, and it took me years to venture any further than the first 50 pages of Colour of Magic.  Even in later books the Wizards just.  Aren’t my thing.
And then, at some point – and I’m a bit hazy on the when, to be honest – I picked up Guards Guards and spent the entire book blinking at Carrot, reading and re-reading; I kept wanting to turn to someone else and nudge and point, because is this guy for real?! And then, again, a page later, for completely different reasons and in completely different tones, is this guy for real AGAIN?!  Terry Pratchett’s books are richly populated with wonderfully rounded, flawed, individual characters, and at first glance Carrot is comparatively straightforward. I hope I never lose that quiet moment of glee I feel at realising that, of course, he really, really isn’t.
5.       Titty Walker (Swallows and Amazons)
Consider Titty a bit of a catch-all for the tomboy girls who filled my childhood reading – George Kirrin, Maia Fielding, Kit Russell and the rest – but she’s the one I thought of first.   I was not an adventurous child - I am not an adventurous adult, for that matter – but these were the books that meant I could be.  I think Titty’s adventures always felt the most tangible, somehow, and the image of her tacking up the field home to read her father’s telegram cemented something in me at an impressionable age that I don’t think I’ve ever quite shaken off.
6.       Leslie Knope (Parks and Recreation)
Again, I love each and every character on this show, but Leslie Knope; annoying, overbearing, forthright Leslie Knope, who cares so damn much about everything that she makes everyone else care more too, who never once considers being anyone other than who she is, who makes mistakes and faces up to fixing them, who will always, always use a favour to help other people…Leslie Knope, folks.  I love her and I like her.
7.       Rose Tyler (Doctor Who)
It’s a pretty close call between Rose and Donna Noble, to be honest, but Rose got there first.   Unapologetically, unashamedly working class Rose, from the council estate, with no A-levels and no prospects and no expectations that anyone will ever give a damn about her, who saves the world in so many different ways, who grows up and laughs and loves and changes but never in the fundamentals of who she is – brilliant, compassionate, brave.   Her life is fantastic because she marches through it punching literal holes in the universe to make it so.
8.       Lyra Silvertongue (His Dark Materials)
Lyra, who loved her world of Oxford rooftops, and ran from it.  Lyra who loved Roger, and killed him.  Lyra who loved Pan, and left him.  Lyra who loved Will, and lost him.  Lyra who lies.  Lyra who left home and came back different, and that was only just the start of her growing up. I’ve been reading Lyra for 20 years and I read her a little bit different every time, but I never love her any less.
9.       Phil Coulson (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
I’m probably stretching things a bit here, because when I say I love Phil Coulson, I’m referring to Phil Coulson of the MCU up to and including 2012, and the subsequent fanon interpretations of him.  I tried Agents of Shield early on and it didn’t stick.  But I saw Avengers Assemble in the cinema with no prior Marvel knowledge (comic or film) and spent the next three days watching the rest of Phase One (hilariously, at the time, five films felt like a lot).  I was in my very early days on Tumblr when #Coulsonlives was a thing, and I still remember the absolute explosion of joy that was.  Every now and again (like right now, actually) I go through a phase of re-reading an unhealthy volume of Clint/Coulson fic – and I do love Clint, and I love Gamora, I love Sam Wilson and Natasha Romanoff and Pepper Potts - and it’s dry, snarky, utterly unflappable who Coulson hooks me every time.
10.       Georgiana Lestrade (The Least of All Possible Mistakes)
Look, I have a lot of feelings about every person on this list and quite a few who aren’t, but if I had to pick the one who felt the most…real, I suppose…then Georgiana Lestrade is my easy answer.  She’s the person I would always want fighting my corner.  George has no false ideals, no delusions about either herself or her world; she is completely grounded in herself and her London – which is almost a character in its own right, one of my very favourite things about Pru’s writing.
Competent, practical, fiercely unphased George, who carries a taser and throws stationary at her underlings; who is gloriously, unashamedly pragmatic; nearing forty and glad of it; as honest and self-aware of her own nature as I think a person can be; and above all else who is damn good at her job.  She might give one hoot about what other people think of her, but she’s certainly not going to waste a second.  That she is surrounded by wild, dangerously intelligent men is almost incidental, but she is, and that is a part of her story – though far from the whole of it - and she takes no more shit from them, never doubts her own right or ability to stand beside them, than she does any other person.
One of the saddest truths of my fandom life is that Pru will never finish the Regency spy AU of this AU, and I mourn this far more often than is healthy XD
***
This was fun and hard in equal measure, and there are so many more I could have listed - Jack Robinson, Violet Baudelaire, Brienne of Tarth, Leia Organa, Theo Hart, to name but a few - but I’m as happy with it as I’ll ever be.
Tagging @firesign23, @kiraziwrites, @angel-deux-writes and @ajoblotofjunk, and also anyone else who wants to give this a go, because I would love to read more of them.

REPLIES TO NANETTE NOT GETTING UPSET

Tumblr media
@simcatcher
She's the most awesomest like hey wow mom of the year *clap clap clap*

@mysimsloveaffair
I'm too distracted by how amazing these shots are to fully grasp the seriousness of this situation.
Tumblr media
@stsciurussimblr
Oh dear. . .
Tumblr media
@shhhushhh
I'm impressed by her ❤ You made this step back in time so masterfully, Pru! And I don't need to know about Mia's dad anymore, not necessarily. This chapter answers many of my questions re Mia ❤
I’m so happy it worked, thank you so much as always for the support, dear Mirena. It seemed to fit that Nanette might have been a political activist in her youth...she has a definite bohemian streak, as evidenced by the way she has raised Mia (and the fact that she is very tolerant of Mia’s wild behaviour), and there’s also the fact that she never married, (and we’ve also been afforded little glimpses into her psyche like how she embraced the fact that Joël lived on a houseboat, because it made him seem like a free spirit. Not kowtowing to society’s rules has always been something dear to Nanette’s heart, which is another reason the idea of being a money smuggler appeals to her). And of course in her student days she would also have learnt to cultivate a healthy disrespect for authority, something that has stayed with her all her life and which made her a force to be reckoned with when the gendarmes came knocking. And it’s obviously a very useful trait to have when dealing with customs officers!
@sweetnovember77
I suppose that the Australian law is the same as UK law.
She was probably only bluffing about the laws, but evidently it worked.
@mochasims
well go on nanette! she handled that impeccably. i was scared she'd crumble. maybe she is about that life. lol although she took a hell of chance assuming french laws are the same as her hometown.
Nanette has hidden depths! Maybe she is ;=). And like I said to Char above, she was probably only bluffing about the laws, but it appears to have paid off. I’m very proud of the old girl!
@shhhushhh
Also, I don't know if you are acquainted with French cinema, but there are several old movies called The Troops from St. Tropez I was raised with and I will never be able to take the French police seriously (or any police tbh) 😂😂
I haven’t, but I can just imagine. Like a whole team of bumbling Inspector Clouseaus?? 😂😂

Loki 1x04
a child? really? the tva really aren't the good guys, then :/
oh, it's the backstory of a character i forgot to care about. anyways ...
the timekeepers really did not look menacing
"full scale calamity" - oooooh, so they're definitely gaslighting everyone then
c20 knew too much and they killed her then, huh. they're really going balls to the wall in establishing who is evil here, huh
loki in near-death situations has kinda lost its jeopardy at this point tbh. marvel has become the studio that cried resurrection
they tried to kill her for being a girl? wtf, that's so freaking dumb. i'm also not feeling remotely inclined to care about her tbh
i have 0 interest in this romantic subplot. it's pissing me off, actually, if anything
loki and mobius bickering like an old married couple. love that for them
SIF! yessss! the show is worth watching for her presence alone! come back, hit him some more! oh yaah this is what i'm here for
"your loki" - <3
this whiny, sad version of loki is actually really boring. not much chaos for the god of mischief
mobius waking in after her saying he'll always be alone. poetic cinema.
also, how is torture supposed to warm him to the tva?
mobius is so snarky. i love him so much. something terrible is definitely about to happen to him, i can feel it
"sick, twisted relationship" "seismic narcissism" - yes, this is what i'm saying
he might have had a jet ski!
oof, B-15 my beloved
the boss lady is manipulating him now. there's not a single 'good' person on the show. who am i even meant to be rooting for here?
how come mobius gets a name but B15 doesn't? like ,, who decides the hierarchy?
B15, breaking my heaRTTT!
tom hiddleston’s ass is a gift in those slacks tho ,,,
ohhhhh. i love them i love them i love them
noooooooo! ffs. i knew it was coming and it still hurt! loki looks distraught and i for one am gutted
damn, just can't get the brainwashed staff these days
oh that's cruel. that's like, next level evil. the apathy. damn, i almost felt sorry for sylvie
the timekeepers are pretty much the least convincing cgi people i've ever seen
B15!!!!!!
why not just touch them with the pruing end? wtf? how dumb
i'm not even getting fun battle couple vibes from them
oh, that explains why they looked so bad
“it never ends” - how i’m feeling, bro
i really, really don't need this weird love story. like, thank god for the boss lady tbh
