Prozzak AU

This is a response to @moringmark​ to help create an AU. This is an AU I’ve been sitting on a while now, so let’s get started.

First a bit of background. Prozzäk was a animated Canadian pop duo that was active between 1998 to 2008, then again in 2015 to 2019. Prozzak told the tale of two friends Simon and Milo as they searched the globe for true love. They released four albums before disbanding in 2019. I’m going to setting the AU using roughly the same story, but with Star and Marco replacing Simon and Milo.

The Legend of Star and Marco:

In another world, there was a large battle for between the kingdoms of Mewni and Monsters. In the Kingdom of Mewni, the next princess received the royal magic wand in order to lead her people to victory. One day, the princess was chosen to lead a sea mission. So she boarded a large warship as a part of her kingdom’s grand invasion strategy. As her ship turned the corner, there were dozens of enemy ships waiting for her.

In a distant time, there was a young man who had just reached the age to become a warrior in his tribe. He had completed his training and earned the name Red Dragonfly. His tribe was locked in battles for territory and power. He set off across the plains to conquer the neighboring tribe. But just as his band had turned the corner, they were ambushed by the enemy.

At the same time, both the princess and the young tribal warrior were locked in combat against well matched opponents. It appeared they were locked in a dead heat. The only question was how dead and how hot.

All at once there was a thunderous noise from the sky. The battles and the sea were plunged into the darkness. Out of this darkness, a huge vortex opened in the sky and a brilliant light ripped apart the dark clouds. It settled on the princess and the warrior and their struggles. 

The great unseen voice called from the sky, “You two have been chosen, chosen to live in a time and place that is not your own, sentenced to walk the earth in search of true love. Only true love holds the key to your destiny.”

And all at once, the princess and the warrior were transported from the blood, sweat and salt water of their battle and sent into the present. Through the princess’s magic, they learned to understand each other and their strange new world. Red Dragonfly adopted a new name for his new life, Marco Diaz. They settled in an abandoned castle as their studio slash compound. 

The duo began to document their worldly travels in song. This is the story of the musician Star and singer Marco as they travel the modern world in search of true love. Only their friendship keeps them going from port to port, city to city, from love to loss, with the hope that the right person will capture their restless hearts. How long will they search the world? How long until they realize that the keys to their hearts lie in each other?

tl;dr version

Star and Marco are taken from time and place to find true love (it’s each other) and they document their travels through music and become a pop duo.

The only warning I have to give you is that while I love Prozzak’s music, I know it’s not for everyone. They have their animated music videos on YouTube, but if you don’t like their music, I guess just plug in your own. If you want, you could even called this Pop Duo AU.

Buckle up, Beybladers.

In 2003, I was 11 years old.

I was Beyblade addicted.

I walked around alone at recess and talked to myself, imagining that it was *I* becoming world champion, solidifying myself with my own pheonix-ish bit beast (her name was Metallia, and she was sometimes purple, but also sometimes green) and imagined myself in a white Old Navy t-shirt with glittery, puffy lettering, wind in my hair, cargo pants rivaling Kai Hiwatari’s. 

I’d bring my mom’s biggest metal mixing bowl to school and act as the Beyblade goddess. Who needed one of those cheap, flimsy plastic dishes when I rolled up to grade 5 with my 4 litre mixing bowl? Who needed Jazzman to call the shots when you had me? Well, probably everyone....I was a terrible commentator.

All that was missing was the sound track. 

The English dub is notorious for early 2000s rock bops, and as a Canadian living in the glory of our national exports of Billy Talent, Sum 41, and Avril Lavigne, I was there for it. 

So, colour me surprised when I rolled up to HMV with my mom, who was in the market for a Diana Ross CD, when on my hunt for the Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone OST, that I found the divider with: BEYBLADE OST 

Excuse me? 

THE WHAT? 

I needed it. 

It was gone.

Fate is cruel.

I scoured the OSTs. Surely, there had to be  one hiding in there. Even in 2003, when Beyblade was the toy of toys, I knew that no one was listening to the OST. I was the only one who knew the dub songs in my class. My escapades mumbling to myself in the school yard were interspersed with “LET’S GO BEYBLADERS” being semi-screamed to high heaven.

In what I can only describe as my  first episode “Dear God Don’t Make Me Talk to The Person Who Works Here” anxiety, my mother made me ask the teenager at the cash if there were any in the back .

He said no. 

I had accepted my fate until he asked if I would like to place an order for one. They’d call me when it arrived. 

Uhhhh.....Yes, sir!

The call came in 14 days later. I was home from school watching the Maury Show on daytime TV. Why was I allowed to do such a thing? Who knows. What it ended up doing was adding more fuel to my AU where I was single handedly bringing the BBA to the mainstream with my sick moves and did interviews with Maury Povich (I never said it was a good, AU.)

As you can probably tell from the track list, this thing was a bop. If you’ve ever heard the songs that rolled up in the dub, then you’ll know that the songs seeped into your pre-teen soul.  I AM going to feel your thunder. I AM the underdog.  Let’s go, Beybladers, LET’S RIP IT THROUGH THE SKY, AM I RIGHT?

Powerful stuff, if you know what I mean.

Well, in the words of Nelvana’s VP at the time, Tracy Ewing, “Music is a key element of the Beyblade brand and a medium able to perfectly capture the adrenaline and excitement of this sports entertainment phenomenon.”

This is from the official announcement for this OST, where Nelvana announces a partnership with Sony Wonder, hoping to capitalize on the Bey-craze.

The weirdest part about this OST, though, was that while there were all of my absolute faves (which I could now listen to in FULL), more than half the tracks were songs that weren’t even in the show. Turns out that the licensing rights expanded past music that was already in the show, and allowed Nelvana to develop new music for potential future albums and to feature songs and artists not in the show.

Why were they on there? 

Well, it could be because....

“We are excited about our relationship with Nelvana as it extends beyond typical licensing agreements with the development of new music to not only support subsequent soundtracks, but the series as well” says Therese Garnett, Vice President Partnership Marketing.

The OST of course contains the tracks that English dub fans (and perhaps others!) know and love, as well as  non-show tracks from Canadian music sensation Prozzak, as well as an at the time up and coming rock band from the Northern Ontario city of Subury (not to far from where I grew up, and known for breeding such sensations as Jeopardy!’s Alex Trebek) called Far From Heroes.

The CD was released on May 20, 2003 along with 2 VHS Tapes (The Blade Raider – Triple Feature and The Qualifier – Triple Feature (couldn’t find a link to this one, sorry) ) and 1 DVD ( Beyblade Battle Series – Volume 1).

To my knowledge, I am the only person I know who every had the OST, and as far as I can see, the CD itself only had a Canadian release. 

Also, despite the name, unfortunately only one volume of this gem was released.
