I guess I'll grow used to the new me, horns and all. The people will see a curiosity, maybe even a beast hungry for their souls. But I will slay their monsters, keep them safe, and one day they will see The Blade of Frontier again!

the blade of frontiers!wyll + professor!gale epilogue though:
Tumblr media
Gale: Teaching at Blackstaff Academy has proven such an unexpected pleasure. Sometimes I find it hard to tear myself away. Just one of the myriad unexpected ways life has delighted me in recent months. Wyll: I can serve the Coast from Waterdeep - and I can keep an eye on you while I'm at it. Gale: Protective as ever, but fear not - my ambition now stretches only as far as getting my marking done in time for us to share a glass of zzar in the Yawning Portal. Devnote: Loving, likes that Wyll is so protective of him

Heard some people calling Davrin boring already…
Literally everything we know about him is that he’s a Dalish elf, a grey warden, has a pet griffin, and is charming. Sounds super interesting to me. Are we gonna start calling Alistair boring too?
Wyll Ravengard got the same treatment. Gee, I wonder why?

Of all the companion pairings, I hadn’t expected Wyll/Karlach being my favorite but I just love the dynamic
Because obviously you’ve got the whole thing of him wanting to kill her because he thought she was evil and then realized she was also a victim and was willing to be turned into a demon because he wasn’t willing to sacrifice an innocent person for himself, and her then being willing to stand up to the devils who want her dead on his behalf
But I also feel like as far as a relationship dynamic they would be a Prince Charming/damsel thing except they both think they’re the Prince Charming and the other is the damsel
Wyll lamenting how his endlessly kind wife who only wants to live a simple life where she is treated equally kindly was tricked, sold, had her heart replaced with an infernal engine that keeps her trapped in basically hell, and was forced to be the first line of attack for the devil who did this to her. Meanwhile behind him Karlach is looking at a locked metal gate and just decides to open it by bending the bars with her bare hands, melting the iron as she does because she has flames inside of her body
Karlach talking about her poor husband Wyll who gave up a comfortable life as the son of a duke to be entered into a devil’s pact and made into a homeless hero who would always protect people but never really get to exist as his own person outside of his pact and his folk hero perception. Meanwhile Wyll is eldritch blasting a demon in the face behind her with an entirely casual and unbothered look on his face
They fix Karlach to the point where she can leave Avernus and Wyll goes to his family and friends to prepare them for meeting her, telling them that she can be very sensitive and has gone through some rough times and grew up on the streets so she’s going to be more rough around the edges than they’re used to and it would probably upset her to come back home only to be made fun of, so please be kind. And in walks his 7 foot tall wife who is as wide as the door with her big giant muscles, battle ax strapped to her back, slapping Duke Ravengard on the shoulder and asking “How the hell are ya?”
Karlach goes to her old Baldur’s Gate friends and says she wants them to meet her husband but he’s the son of nobility and spent a long time living in that more polished world so he talks very formal and polite and isn’t really used to how they talk and interact so please don’t make fun of him if you think he speaks funny. And in walks the Blade of the Frontiers with a suspicious amount of not quite dried blood on his pants
They both think they’re the “They said no pickles” part of the relationship but actually if they asked for no pickles and were given pickles they would make eye contact with the person who did it while using their biggest two handed weapon to scrape the pickles off onto the floor

It’s important to me that Astarion is a huge cunt on Wyll’s behalf. Wyll might be too kind and sweet to people who don’t deserve his good heart, but his husband is not.
He’s also the son-in-law of Ulder Ravengard’s nightmares.

How to kill Mizora in act 3 without damning Wyll
A few months ago I made a reddit post on this matter. Thought I should share this tutorial with Tumblr folks too and add a few more notes plus an alternative method to it.
Players have discovered Flesh to Stone can turn Mizora into a statue, but this tutorial helps you erase Mizora's presence on the material plane. Both methods involves the use of illithid powers, meaning you have to absorb a few tadpoles. But, to quote Wyll, that's "a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things".
Method 1. Drain Intelligence -> Absorb Intellect
You need: A character who has gone through partial ceremorphosis and unlocked illithid power Absorb Intellect,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A wizard/fighter/rogue (classes that use Intelligence for spell casting) who has unlocked illithid power Ability Drain, and a cleric/druid who is at least level 9. One character may satisfy more than one roles. If you're short on tadpoles, please refer to this page for the locations to find them.
Step 1. Let the wizard/fighter/rogue attack Mizora with any attack roll spells (e.g. Firebolt) to drain her Intelligence. Alternatively, equip Infernal Rapier and melee attack Mizora. Repeat until her Intelligence is drained to 1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 2. (IMPORTANT!) Let the cleric/druid prepare the spell Contagion. Cast the Contagion: Mindfire variant of it on Mizora. Wait for her to fail the saving throws 3 times. (She needs to succeed the saves 3 times to nullify this spell.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After 3 failed saves, Mizora will turn hostile due to the spell effect and a battle commences. This step is to make sure that you can safely kill her. Otherwise, your entire camp would turn hostile, and Wyll and Ulder would no longer be your allies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 3. Let the character who has gone through partial ceremorphosis use Absorb Intellect on Mizora. It is recommended that this character has a high initiative to act first. Once you successfully hit Mizora, the combat ends, your party gain 1 XP, Mizora teleports away but leaves a pool of blood on the ground.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then she teleports back - as a disintegrating corpse that turns into a pile of ash after 1 round. No loot from her. What a shame!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Playing flute on her ash XD
Method 2. Drain Strength -> Summon Shadow -> Strength Drain
This method is very similar to the first one. You still need a cleric/druid and a character who has unlocked Ability Drain (preferably someone with high Strength), but no one needs to go through partial ceremorphosis. Instead, back in act 2 you need Gale to craft a Shadow Lantern in Moonrise Towers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 1. Equip Shadow Lantern and cast Conjure Shadow Lantern Wraith to summon a Shadow.
Step 2. Let the character who has unlocked Ability Drain to drain Mizora's Strength. You have many options like melee attacking her, or throwing rotten food, boots, underwear, or anything in your inventory at her. Repeat until her Strength is drained to no higher than 3.
Step 3 is same as step 2 in method 1 - Cast Contagion: Mindfire on Mizora and wait for her to turn hostile.
Step 4. Let the summoned Shadow use Strength Drain on Mizora. She shall die in the same way.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Babygirl you do need a good rest after 7 years of abuse and torment!
So far, in my testings, dead Mizora doesn't affect Wyll's quest, nor does he have a reaction to it. However, it makes saving Ulder a bit easier: when Ulder steps outside of his cell room, the cutscene where Mizora shows up will be skipped. The spiders will still be summoned, but Ulder won't waste a turn forced to kneel.
PS. You may notice My origin Wyll here doesn't have horns but Karlach is also in my party. Some players have also discovered this way to trick Mizora in act 1, by knocking out Wyll every night until the party have entered Mountain Pass. I will post details about this after I get a reliable way to achieve it.

No but Astarion wanting to be valued for more than sex and seen for something that's not just sex regardless of who romances him and Wyll wanting a chaste and genuine romance with sincere and committed courtship with no sex regardless of who romances him is insaneeeeee. I know everyone's talked about this before but everytime I stop to think about it I lose my mind. They couldn't be more narratively bound I'm clawing at the bars of my cage
#I put my lengthy tags in a reblog if you want.#And yes ofc Wyll teaching Astarion compassion and Astarion teaching Wyll to value himself and advocate for himself#Make them perfect for each other#But THIS to me is the nail in the coffin (pun intended) of why they are meant for each other#Wyll would not fall for Astarion's seduction attempts he is the only companion who would not give in to having meaningless sex w him#Or if not meaningless sex then immediate sex ykwim#Likewise Wyll's identity as a monster hunter and a chivalrous champion of the people would make him the prime target of Astarion's whims#Because who better to protect a monster but the monster hunter TURNED INTO A MONSTER himself.#Astarion would jump on the chance to use Wyll's devil transformation to his advantage and Wyll is THE ONLY ONE it wouldn't work on.#Wyll may have fallen first but Astarion fell harder than Elturel when he finally realised Wyll is GENUINELY good#And that he GENUINELY does not want sex and does not love Astarion for the possibility of sex#He asks for a fucking dance. He asks for a fucking dance before he ever even entertains the idea of sex. And he is steadfast about it#And astarion would play along with the romance just until he can get Wyll to help him kill Cazador#But would inevitably fall in love with Wyll along the way no matter what because Wyll is just genuine and chaste no matter what#“Wyll is the type of man I used to dream of marrying. When I was 13” he is doomed to fall for Wyll no matter what and he hates it#wyllstarion#Wyll Ravengard#astarion ancunin#bg3 astarion#bg3 wyll#Bloodpact#Coolest fucking ship name ever also. No one does it like them

...I have my preferred ships in BG3, but I love the fact that all ships are technically canon because any origin character can technically romance any origin character which means that there's a universe where Wyll/Lae'zel is the "They put onions on my burger again. 😔"/"Wyll Requested No. Onions.😡" couple & I think that's beautiful.

The thing that really gets me about Wyll and Karlach is just how their bond is allowed to have the importance in their narratives that it has
I mean, in games like these the cast is always going to be centered around the pc. Sure, the relationships between other companions can be developed through party banter, commentary, or even cinematics, but at the end of the day everyone's most significant relationship is always going to be the player. That's the person who most affects them and where their story is going
With these two, it's not even that Tav isn't vitally important to them both, but it's meeting Karlach that changes Wyll's life one way or another. It's Wyll that's the first person to stick out his neck for Karlach, and sends her reeling. Their bond alone is enough to convince Karlach to go to Avernus and stay alive
It's a very bold choice to risk limiting the player's importance in order to drive home the connection between two characters, and I really appreciate Larian for going there

Thinkin about the idea of Astarion being protective over Wyll, especially when it comes to Mizora. Mizora shows up to talk to Wyll and the whole time Astarion is glaring at her like he's trying to burn a hole through her head with his eyes, all the while slowly drifting closer to Wyll. The first time it happens Wyll is a little bit bewildered, he doesn't hate it certainly but he's so used to being the protector, he's not used to being protected, he doesn't quite know what to do with himself. Eventually Astarion is slowly drifting his way into Wyll's personal space and Wyll doesn't pull away. After the first few times this happens he even starts to lean into it when Astarion starts inching into his personal space.
It's quite comforting, knowing he's got Astarion by his side, that he doesn't have to face this alone - he's not facing it alone - just the fact that Astarion there is a comfort to him. It's also quite validating, seeing Astarion so angry on his behalf. And maybe, perhaps, it's a little bit endearing. Certainly Astarion cuts a pretty intimidating figure, it's hard to deny that, though there's part of Wyll that can't help but be reminded of an angry stray cat, puffing up and growling at whoever got too close. More than once he has to stifle a grin at the mental image.

yknow i didn't necessarily start my wyll origin run with the intent of romancing astarion in mind but the more i play the more i find their similarities amusing when it comes to like, the surface level personality they present to strangers in act 1.
wyll is a compulsive flirt. you see it in dialogue with shadowheart and lae'zel - he just tosses out a couple lines that clearly aren't supposed to go anywhere (asking lae'zel if she believes in love at first sight, blatantly reusing the same flirtation attempts with shadowheart) and i see this as part of his Blade of Frontiers persona. obviously a traveling vigilante would have no time for romance or relationships, but he's socially aware enough to have learned that people respond well to a certain level of rogueish charm. especially if his reputation precedes him. he can safely and positively engage in surface level flirtations with the people he interacts with because the person doing the flirting isn't real - at least not to him. he often says the Blade is his best self, but to him its an ideal he strives to achieve, not the person he really is. and i imagine that includes the ability to give discouraged people positive attention in a nonthreatening way. its safe. its superficial. he doesn't have to follow through.
this is overshadowed somewhat by astarion's tendency to flirt with anything that has a pulse, but the perspective they both have on it is pretty similar. theyre both coming from a place of not actually being interested in the recipient of their attention - whether that be through astarion's ulterior motives or wyll's lack of capacity for a relationship - but they both still put on this front because it's habitual. it's worked for them and it's gotten them through the varying degrees of social contracts they find themselves in. so they wind up trading lines easily because they've studied from the same script.
anyway what im getting at is bumping these two personalities against each other can definitely result in wyll and astarion committing to the bit so hard they accidentally wind up in a relationship. like, you're safe, you know the rules, you're speaking in a language i'm familiar with but we both understand that neither of us expect anything back on an emotional level. wait when did we start confiding our deepest secrets with one another. what do you mean you trust me.

BloodPact nation I come with a concept.
Pretty soon after Wyll officially becomes grand duke, he and Astarion decide to go on a trip. Possibly to go visit Karlach or maybe a little romantic getaway.
And Ulder who's just settled into retirement and is pretty pissy about suddenly having to fill in for something that seems frivolous starts getting pissy about it. And Wyll is on the verge of caving and putting the trip off because he does have a responsibility now so maybe he should put that first and Astarion just makes a comment of something like "Yes maybe he's right. It would be rather shitty to leave someone else in charge right after being crowned. Though you father is at least an experienced adult so I'm sure that he would be capable of handling any emergencies, the city has been left in less experienced hands before," while staring Ulder right in the eye and DARING him to say no or give him an excuse to stab him.
Ulder shuts up and they go on the trip

sorry to bring it up again but I'm still fuckifn off kilter from learning that wyll is twenty four years old
he's the baby of the group
this. this changes everything. he's been in a pact for seven years because he sacrificed everything for his city at 17 then got kicked from his home over it. he's been in mizora's "warlock menagerie" since he was a teenager. where is this party's protective instinct toward him. I need to SEE IT
