God Eater 3 Character Novel | Beginning of a Vow: Chapter 6
[image id: A novel cover. Hugo Pennywort from God Eater 3 is leaning against the bars of a prison cell. He is holding up his hand and looking at one of his armlets as if reminiscing. On the other side of the bars is a faded image of a young Hugo looking off into the distance. The text, when translated into English, reads “God Eater 3 Character Novel | Chapter 1: Hugo Edition | Beginning of a Vow”. /end id]
This is a fan translation. Original text here.

After that, Luca and I remained at Pennywort, the aces up their sleeve.
The phenomenon of light that had occurred between me and Luca came to be known as Engage. It was discovered to be a power that could occur between all AGEs and connect their wills.
Their sensory capability was greatly enhanced, allowing for the release of further latent abilities, as well as the sharing of each other's consciousnesses, which temporarily improved their fighting ability.
Because AGEs in different regions were becoming more and more defiant, many Ports began to restrict us even more firmly, judging that it would be dangerous to let this power go unchecked.
At Pennywort, the use of Engage was banned on principle. Our freedom became more restricted than ever. As a result, we were forced to abandon our plans for a rebellion.
I had thought it would be a special power, something only AGEs could use to open the way to the future. Ironically, its discovery only served to eliminate that possibility.
But even so, the light of our wish for freedom was not so easily extinguished in our hearts.
Because what the two heroes left behind connected the bonds between the AGEs of Pennywort.
They had left behind those hidden radios, allowing us to communicate with each other, even across the prison.
They had been friends who died while plotting a rebellion, wishing for the liberation of all AGEs.
It was truly immeasurable how much courage they had planted in our hearts.
No matter how constrained we were. Until the day we would eat away at the chains that took away our freedom and break them to pieces.
Those two had always been protecting our dream.
Our long-enduring dream...
"Hugo... Hugo!"
Slowly, I was jolted back into reality from a long dream, retracing my old memories.
I awoke lying in a soft bed aboard the Chrysanthemum.
Luca stared at my face, a worried expression on his own.
"Luca...? Oh, shoot! Sorry, did I oversleep?!"
Realizing what had happened, I rushed to jump out of bed.
"About ten minutes. It's pretty rare for you to sleep in, so everyone was starting to worry."
"Sorry! Today's job is starting soon, huh?"
"It's fine, you've still got time. Zeke laughed and said you could treat him to something later to make up for it."
"Heh... That guy never misses a beat, does he?"
With a wry smile, I opened my locker.
My voice trailed off as I spotted the bundle of chokers.
"Hugo? What's wrong?"
"...No, it's nothing."
Wrapping my arm with the bundle of feelings entrusted to me, I turned back to Luca.
"Let's go, Luca! To open the way to our future!"
"Yeah!"
Bright sunlight poured in through the skylight on the Chrysanthemum.
The sky resembled the one I looked up at that day in the satellite base.
I held up my arm, filled with so many wishes, to my friends waiting under the light.
For the sake of the many wishes entrusted to our hands.
A path to the future, cutting through despair.
We would continue to move forward on that path.

"What Archetypes Are Your OCs?" Quiz, Top Four Fictional Crushes and The Worst Ship Chart Ever

Three results for OC archetypes, a listing of four of my fictional crushes (oh fuck-) and two worst ship charts ever. You can find the quiz here. You can find these and the template for the chart below.
Three results for Archetypes for OCs from The UnTitledverse, The Silver Chronicles and A Radioactive Calamity Of Love, Bombs & Gore.
ALFRED "JEFF" HOPPER (THE UNTITLEDVERSE)
I don't this is necessarily correct. Throughout the first two sagas (The Pefect Storm and The Omniscient Rule sagas), Jeff has been nothing more than a supporting and often times tertiary protagonist. Maybe not a main but definitely important. He has moments of selfishness, sure, but that's not often. The only really selfish "messed shit up for everyone" moment was when he took the opportunity to change course of events which worsened the space-time continuum while he had been helping the Time Guard chase after a time-travelling mass serial killer fugitive who had been making Time unstable in the first place, which wasn't even out of malicious intent, rather he just wanted his bestest friend back from non-existence, that being Lena Elliot. So yeah, he screwed up, but not to a villainous extent.
ALEXANDER KHAOS (THE SILVER CHRONICLES)
Oh god another villain result. Which... is more accurate for Alexander than it is for Jeff. He's more of an antagonist to Silva, that's for sure (being the right-hand man and Chosen Extraordinaire, which is basically Jacob's top elite Chosen, of Jacob Seed). He has unresolved trauma in regards to his time in Wellington Wells and has embraced his role in Hope County in Eden's Gate, though if a stronger or more ideological compatible person came around, he'd take his loyalists (which includes Hannah McCalkin) and leave Jacob behind.
ALPH DOLEN (A RADIOACTIVE CALAMITY OF LOVE, BOMBS & GORE)
Link to Minecraft Poem for anyone interested. Oh good, I worried it wasn't going to be different. And OH WOW! Alph got read to filth here. Kind of ironic that he craves love and wants to be surrounded by love but is the "Lone Wanderer". Doubly ironic when he's ghoulified... something that should be where he is rejected by everyone and everything, but ends up with more than he could ever ask for, especially with Ress and Amata... until Arcane Urias ruins everything, as he does.
Here's the list of my top four fictional crushes:
Maki Zen'in - Jujutsu Kaisen (Specifically post-Shibuya Arc)
(I want to be lifted up and carried bridal-style in her arms)
2. Soundwave - Transformers Prime (when I was young and both completely blind without glasses I didn't know I required and literacy blind to whatever I was watching, I thought this Soundwave (the only one I had been introduced to at the time) was female... he's still pretty aesthetically pleasing though, cool AF, and a caring parent to Laserbeak so...)
3. Faith Seed - Far Cry 5 (daydreaming-about-frollicking-in-green-flower-fields-and-living-in-cozy-cottages lesbians UNITE!)
(however fair warning she might get you high enough to talk to God and try to convince you to join her older adoptive brother's cult)
4. GLaDOS - Portal
(...her soothing condescending voice that belittles and tries to get you killed and her smooth + robust curves in her awesome design enchant me...)
Honourable Mention goes to (look'em up):
5. Sea Empress - Subnautica
Two of the worst ship charts for The Silver Chronicles and Life, Despair & Monsters.
Translation for the unreadable:
What draws them together? Initially the mystery surrounding each other as no one except a very specific few know much about their former lives, and their opposing factions forces them to interact a lot, and thanks to the Bliss, that's what they mostly end up doing. Plus they mostly fit each others preferences.
What stands in the way? They are at war in two opposing factions, one that wants to kill/detain (Resistance) and the other that will kill but will try to indoctrinate Silva (Eden's Gate). Opposing morality, beliefs and trust issues also get in the way.
What are their good traits? Silva and Faith find companionship with another due to their similar past/current circumstances, and Silva's compassion and unexpected kindness is bizarre and appealing to Faith, as her cunning and passions are appealing to Silva. Both are willing to sabotage their own factions to keep the other around a bit longer, plus their determination to find a peaceful resolution.
What makes them hopeless at romance? Trust, or lack there of. Silva is weary that Faith will report anything she says to Joseph to better get her into Eden's Gate, while Faith is weary that Silva is trying to get close to manipulate her into coming out into the open to better take her down. Both are correct in the beginning but later down the line it gets muddied. Silva also refuses to speak of her past (understandable) except for the vaguest of truths while Faith doesn't fully open herself up in fear of being scorned. Not to mention it's been a long while since Silva had been in a romantic relationship and Faith is very inexperienced.
Describe them with one trope: Toxic Toxic "I can fix her" & "I can make her worse/better" Enemies-To-Lovers Yuri.
Translation for the unreadable (Also note that when Jennifer is talking about her partner, it's mostly complaining about Sonya, and Sonya's image is more a reference to what I closely envision her as):
What draws them together? They both fail to kill each other and have a bone to pick with both Dicko and Sir Enigma Malvolio and they're also considered "non-human" now.
What stands in their way? Sonya is unstable to the point she's agitated enough to kill others on instinct which Jennifer is trying to control much to Sonya's distaste. There's also the fact Sonya is like a 12-foot something mecha-beastie which she doesn't think Jennifer finds attractive. Jennifer is in denial of her feelings and believes if she loses control of Sonya then it will be right back to square-one like it was with Dicko or she'd die, either one.
What are their good traits? They both have a common interest revenge against Dicko (successful) and Malvolio (work-in-progress), and Sonya acts as Jennifer's trump card and intimidation factor in their illegal business. Both also have an appreciation for their brutal honesty and openness with one another and relatability (with Jennifer as a synthetic human and Sonya's brain transferred to a mecha-beastie). They have no problems committing murder together.
What makes them hopeless at romance? Jennifer is used to being treated as an object of lust and since her freedom from Dicko and take over of his business has pushed to be in control of everything (including Sonya) and is trying to ensure she doesn't lose that control and denying all romantic/sexual feelings, while Sonya is a victim of Malvolio and his treatment of her has left a lot of psychological scars where she dehumanizes herself and does everything in her power to prove it correct too.
Describe them with one trope: Toxic "I can make you so-so-so worse baby" bloody murder Yuri situationship/partnership on a mission of revenge with a pinch of monsterfucking and goes from "I want to kill you" to "I'd kill for you" pipeline.

Introducing the Writer Tag Game
Ty @iloveyou-writers for making this and to @thewriteflame for tagging me <3
Rules: fill in the blanks with as much or little detail as you would like and tag some writer friends to play too. (blank version)
Hello, there. My name is award-winning speculative fiction author Natalie H. Ironside and I won a writing contest in high school one time that I'm gonna milk harder than Pabst milks their one blue ribbon. I'm a writer of the dark sci-fi and dark fantasy genre(s) and I love to write about sad gay ppl in horrible situations. Also, hope. The hope is very important, and my stories can get pretty dark but they always have happy endings.
I cover a broad enough range that I think I can just reject the dichotomy of SFW/NSFW (everything is adequately tagged and described so the rest is in God's hands). I write about some pretty dark themes and a lot of my work deals with the aftermath of stuff like sexual violence and child abuse, so just be aware of that, as well as the "entrails, lovingly described" throughout. Tropes you will never find in my writing include any salacious depictions of sexual violence (the word "aftermath" in the above is an important one) or...Well, I'm not sure how to put this. Most of my protags are racial, religious, sexual, or some other sort of minority, and obviously there's some darkness in the world et cetera, but there's a certain way of framing bigotry in fiction as though it's cinematic action violence which I find uniquely distasteful and I will not be doing any of that. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this in a way that makes any sense at all but I promise to never try to be the Kojima of sexism.
In my humble opinion, my best work I've posted is The Scruggsdale Organizer #4: Local Woman About Tired of All This Mess because I think it's very funny. Maybe I'm just being precious, but comedy is really really hard and I very rarely even bother trying at it but I'm pretty proud of The Scruggsdale Organizer and this installment in particular. For y'all who don't know, which I'm sure is a lot of y'all since I haven't posted about it in forever, The Scruggsdale Organizer is an epistolary horror-comedy serial about a little town in rural Mississippi where strange supernatural things happen, but instead of blog posts or letters the story is being told through articles in a weekly anarchist zine. Yeah, I guess I've written some "novels" and some "short stories" and some "poetry" or whatever, but I look at Scruggsdale Organizer #4 as a time I set out to do a specific thing and just really nailed it; it's the literary equivalent of parking the car in the spot just right.
My all-time favorite character I've made is Freydis Gothi Thorkilsdottir, daughter of Thorkil Gothi Swordbreaker, Matron of War Witches, Matron of War Matrons, High Field Marshal, Eater of Cities, Mother of Abominations, and Chief Royal Consort. She's a recurring protagonist in my Nameless Queen dark fantasy universe and I am love her very much. Freydis is an enormous ginger transsexual, a sword-and-board fighter who can cast wicked spells, and a rough-and-tumble freebooting adventurer type who suddenly found herself part of the royal court and fast-tracked into becoming a monstrous demigod. It's super weird for her and she's dealing with a whole "to become a god is to lose everything that made life worth living" situation but she's also having a rip-roaring good time while she does it.
Something I'd love for you to know about my writing that isn't listed in this game is, well, I feel like we got kinda dark in the middle there, so I wanted to end back where we began and talk about hope. What really does it for me when it comes to the dark stuff is recovery; I like telling stories about recovery. My characters sometimes have very very bad days, but tomorrow can always be better than yesterday and there's always a reason to keep trying.
Thank you for reading and now I challenge the following people to fill this out: I seem to have misplaced my list of people who said they liked participating in tag games so I'm leaving this one open. I tag each and every one of you.

started playing god eater 3 since it was on sale, supports coop multiplayer, and it looks like some incredibly chuuni bullshit which i'm into
so it's pretty damn monster hunter, but it's got a whole story to chew on inbetween monster killing. it's in that genre of anime scifi that's sort of... grimdark but somehow soft about it: yes you're a disposable prisoner sent from your jail cell to fight monsters until you die, but then a rich lady with a severe shortage of buttons comes and rescues you with her cool land ship and from that day forth, it's all cozy found family vibes on the ship. you even get to adopt a psychic kid (being proclaimed 'mommy' is about where I got to tonight).
i am strongly reminded of Arknights, although if there is a link between them it must surely go the other way; this goes as far as a silent protagonist who is constantly praised by the other characters but is still basically a nonentity as far as moving the plot along, beyond occasionally jumping to save someone in a cutscene. this is i think the weakest aspect of the story, but it's a perrenial problem in game writing so i won't go on and on about it.
so far the mechanics... well, i came to this after Nine Sols, so expecting that level of readability and rhythm to the combat is perhaps unwise. still, I've so far found the game very easy (though I'm sure, like Monster Hunter, they just ease you in gradually) - that said, the boss attacks are quite hard to read and if they hit harder I'm sure I'd be toast. there's an impressive variety of systems and items just like in monster hunter; the weapon mechanics don't feel nearly so varied sadly, but also it may be that it's hard to figure out how to use them to greatest effect.
so far i've figured out... most weapons seem to have a light string, a heavy string, an aerial light string, and an aerial heavy string that grounds you? there may be exceptions to that, I haven't tried every weapon. for all weapons there's a long range dash move that damages enemies if you hit them, a move that takes a big bite out of the enemy and activates your upgraded state, and you have a secondary weapon that's a gun with a variety of bullet types, plus you have a special boost state that has a specific trigger depending on which one you have equipped, and another special boost state that links you to your companions, and weapons have elements and damage types and can inflict status effects. plus bosses have hit locations which can be broken to stun the monster
in short it's complicated in most of the ways monster hunter is complicated. there's already quite a bit of tutorial and I wouldn't want more so I just have to hope I'll pick the rest up through practice, but I could definitely do with a practice dummy to try out movesets...
so far there really hasn't been much need to pay attention to all of the intricacies of it, since you can pretty safely button mash your way through, but i'm quite sure that will change. if I have one big complaint it's that the missions and especially maps are quite repetitive, but the story seems to be picking up the pace a bit finally so I'm encountering more bosses and more maps to fight them in. but... that's also monster hunter isn't it.
anyway it's a fun game and i enjoy the chuuni-ass anime bullshit about evil human experiments, even if it's no NieR. def worth £4...

15 years of Revya
Next on my tour of appreciating favorite characters, it's Revya from Soul Nomad and the World Eaters.
Specifically the female version.
February 2008
I started playing SN in early 2008, February, I think. If this isn't my first Revya, it's one of the earliest, and it's still one of my favorites. I see Revya as a very strong but very quiet, even passive person. She often lets people walk all over her – Danette, Virtuous, and then Gig – and she puts up with it because she knows someone's going to have to be the hero and take care of things. She doesn't much want to be that hero, but she takes the responsibility. And this sketch catches her during a quick break, tired but sword still in hand.
May 2008
Soul Nomad just delighted me. It's weird and goofy in that familiar Nippon Ichi way, but also darker and more complex than Disgaea or Phantom Brave. I played it many times over the next few years, most often on the normal route, getting different secret characters and endings, but also enjoying all the sinister swerves of the Demon Path.
June 2008
I also wrote a lot of SN fanfic, most of it centered on Revya. Writing and drawing are both excellent ways to figure out a character.
September 2009
Silent protagonists cut both ways. On one hand, they’re basic and boring. On the other, they give you a lot of freedom as a writer and fanartist.
August 2010
And Revya gives you some fun to work with. Through her different dialogue options, you can see someone who's brave and good-hearted, but often extremely unimpressed by all the bombastic personalities around her.
April 2011
The fact that, aside from a few situational changes, she's written identically to the male protagonist means she avoids a lot of stereotypical female anime character tropes.
March 2012
Actually, the game goes a little too far in that direction, and there are some dialogue choices that just assume of course you're playing as male Revya. But on the other hand female Revya is the version that appears in Disgaea 3. And I think in general the American fandom prefers her.
June 2012
She has a very cute design with her big red eyes and ahoge, but it's also shaggy, mismatched, rough – she looks like a scruffy, seasoned warrior, not a shining knight or an elegant sorceress or even a typical young anime girl about to start her life.
February 2013
And to go back to her character, while I see her as fairly calm, uncomplaining, carrying others' quests and burdens, I think when it comes down to it, she holds her own line.
January 2015 (pictured with Hakuno from Fate and Minako from Persona, two other female protagonists with weird relationships with people who talk into their brains)
She's not going to let an evil death god hijack her body. She's not going to back down from towering four-story monsters. She may save it for special occasions, but she's not scared to assert herself. And when she and the evil death god do get on the same page and actually support each other, they're magnificently powerful.
March 2020
The Demon Path shows us just how far she's willing to take her own power. And even there, she doesn't entirely lose her humanity, even in the final battles. Though once she makes the darkest choice possible, perhaps it's too late for even her to come back.
July 2020
I haven't gone over the numbers, but I feel like in general there are fewer female protagonists in JRPGs nowadays, even merely as female options. Or maybe it's that the ones that do exist are for smaller games and feel less visible. Companies seem less risk-taking in that regard. And while the gender of the protagonist has never determined whether or not I like a game, seeing a girl at the forefront does make a difference to me.
February 2023
I still think Revya's a good protagonist, default silence notwithstanding. She doesn't talk much, but I still love talking about her.

Recommendation Request Hours!!
Hey friends, I am on an anime kick and have finished or caught up with several shows, I want something new, and nothing else currently on my list fits the mood I'm in, so I invite you all to yell recommendations at me. A couple guidelines:
I'm in the mood for fantasy. High/alt world fantasy would be my preference, but I'll also take recs for modern/urban/period fantasy. I'm wary of isekai as a rule but I'll consider it
I do mean fantasy, not sci-fi. Obviously this is a very blurry line (and I like SF! just not the current mood) but please no mecha or otherwise primarily tech-based settings or premises
I'm looking for something action heavy -- big battles or otherwise exciting animation sequences. I want the eye candy and adrenaline.
I desperately do not want to watch anything in which the protagonist is a man who spends half his time thinking about getting into Literally Any Woman's pants. Romance is fine it's the specific brand of "any woman will do I'm just obsessed with getting laid" that I want to avoid
Swords are not a requirement but they are an automatic bonus

Intro Post. Welcome to my twinsted mind
Hi I'm Rex. He/Its, 18, Scottish, trans guy, autistic, disabled and a myriad of other issues
I do: Art, Music, Photography, Videography, Writing, Poetry, Sewing (I can't but I've been trying for 7 years so I think it counts)
One thing you should know. If you are here after seeing fanart I am sorry I am an oc artist first and foremost those fuckers own me
My art is under #my art, oc stuff is under #my ocs, music is under #music
Oc specific tags:
#Chaos Reigns [CR] - My longest running story which I currently have no idea what to do with. It's mostly vibes I think.
#Angelic Rehabilitation Project - An angel hears God claim he will start Armageddon early if humans continue to repeat their mistakes and refuse to change. This angel, taking pity on mankind, decides to round up a group of some of the worst humans on earth to help them redeem themselves. To then use them as a way to prove god wrong. The group of humans is insane and the angel's idea of redemption is warped. Humanity is fucked.
#you are what you eat [yawye] - Split up between 3 different protagonist, this is a petri dish of unhealthy coping mechanisms and fucked up dynamics. It's what I do best.
#Project: Sin-Eater - Super new and still very in development. The head of the NYC mafia dies and his underlings are left trying to figure out what happened.
TTRPG Character tags:
#camp psyonyx - I fixed the tag you motherfuckers
#ada sonata - My VtM character. Tremere/Bagger. 50/50 chance she will be dead in a session. I love her she has broken the masquerade twice and killed 8 people i am not good at VtM.
#Dolly Auclair - Character for my friend's Candela campaign. Face/Magician. She's owns a cafe, has a daughter and is completely fucking insane.
#Dante Quin - My VtM backup. Lasombra/Extortionist. For the 50/50 scenario where Ada dies and eats shit.
#neo miu nova - World's number 1 idol! In some universe anyway. Went from DND character to my mascot. She's also got a dead body inside her.

The Character Customization Files
The God Eater Series + Code Vein
Genre: Anime Style Hack and Slash/RPG
Customization: Yes
Romance: Haha. No. But we can dream.
I am biased. I love this series with a passion and I'm excited to see what the next entry will bring in terms of lore. Lore that was expanded upon slightly with Code Vein offering new questions. With that said here's what can be said about the games in terms of customization/gameplay.
God Eater 1/Resurrection:
Hoh boy. The game shows its age now. But it's a classic. In the facial category, it's lackluster. Giving you a set of faces to work with and few hairstyles, but for me the clothes were always something I loved. There's a good plenty to be unlocked as you play. The story is a bit rushed; I wish it was more fleshed out and drawn out. But what is there is enough, the characters are iconic and absolutely lovable. As for romance, ha-ha I wish. But we have Alisa, who seems to have a crush on the player. That's a plus. Also, background romances? Yes.
God Eater 2/Rage Burst:
This game also shows its age. It lacks polish, like really lacks it. Translation errors and dialogue not matching what was said. I may have to go back but I swear in a cutscene that was meant to be heart felt my character was nowhere to be seen. Instead, there was the generic male protag. When I played as a girl. I laughed because it was hilarious. This time around in the customization the clothes are still plentiful, more so in fact. I... like to collect them all.
The characters this time around are a bit more extra. Whether that's good or bad, depends on who plays it. Because I loved some but loathed others. Just one. But even he grew on me to some degree. Romance? Not you there's not. Implied? Maybe. If you squint.
God Eater 3:
I miss the clothing from its predecessors, the variety isn't there in this one. But the overall aesthetic and look of your protagonist is good. The model itself is good. I just don't like the hair shine, but that's a small thing.
There isn't romance, but oh boy. You play the game and tell me there isn't love. Platonic or romantic whatever is going on between your protagonist and Hugo. I love it. Found family. I live for it. While the game could do with more fleshing out of relationships and in general being longer it does have DLC that's free that expands a bit further.
Code Vein:
Hello, good looking! The character customization is off the charts in terms of options. Not clothes, which is a bummer. But hair, accessories and make up galore! The options to make an absolutely unique character are there. The characters still suffer a bit from the same issue I had with God Eater. Lack of overall interaction with the characters. I wanted more. Still, I enjoyed it very much. There's no romance. But that's fine. There are characters who's romances I enjoyed to see.
Code Vein is special since you don't have to play the God Eater series to enjoy the game. I believe it was said it was not in the same universe as the God Eater series. But that's only a half truth. It does, but it requires no knowledge of the God Eater lore to play. It exists somewhere alongside it, a side story existing in its own bubble.
With the God Eater games I like to say the story carries on from each one. Almost like a cause and effect. God Eater 3 can be played alone as it's not as tight knit as the other two but is a delight to play when you see a certain character appear again having been there from the beginning.
If you want to start with this series start the old ones first. Here's my reasons why.
First. The older games are clunkier. If you start with the more recent titles going back will psyche you out. They'll feel heavy and it's a relief when you get to the more recent titles.
Second. Lore wise. I liked getting to see the story progress throughout the series. You get to know them and get attached to them.
Third. I feel like the older ones are more likely to go on sale. Don't get them full price.
Counter point:
If you'd like. Play the newer ones first. God Eater 3 and Code Vein make good introductions on their own. They're smoother to play and you don't need to play the others unless you'd like to.
Ratings:
God Eater Series
Overall: 7/10
Would I recommend? Yes and no. Yes, because I am biased. No, if it's not to your taste.
Code Vein
Overall: 8/10
Yes, I would recommend. Like I said. This game can be played alone without the others, offers a good introduction to the world via a teaser. The customization is amazing too.

I wouldn't expect anyone to feel as strongly as I do about "A House of many Doors"
But I love this game.
Arcanum and Pillars of Eternity also gave me a lil bit of a crisis, Pillars of Eternity making me overthink my perspective on Religion (I actually sympathized with the villian), Arcanum made me contemplate Life and Death (also, the villian had a point).
God Eater 3 just made me rethink my stance of silent Protagonists because that game just did it SO RIGHT. Protag may have been mute but still had a very clear personality, it was so well done.
In my opinion, the best media (in my case, only games) are the ones that make you rethink your current opinions. That make you think in general. Because even if your opinion doesn't change, it makes you see a different perspective, and that is also valuable.
it's a weird emotion when somebody goes "doesn't this just shake you to your core and rewrite your dna and change who you are as a person" and your honest experience of it was that it was ok

I looked up from my medical book and turned to Luca, who had been listening to me the whole time in the Chrysanthemum's infirmary.
"After that, I met the owner and came aboard the Chrysanthemum. And that's how I met you and the others."
Luca stared at the medical book I was holding, then quietly spoke.
"Then, what happened to Eir? Was she..."
"She was spared from execution. I was told Governor-General Gadolin made the decision. I guess he saw through my ruse after all."
But there had been no way to acquit her.
"Eir was banished from Gleipnir, and an investigation was launched into House Albert's affairs. It was discovered that Eir and her parents had been leaking insider information from Gleipnir. ...As a result, House Albert was completely dismantled."
"I see... So, where's Eir now?"
In response to Luca's anxious question, I smiled and shook my head.
I had taken everything from her.
All her hard work, all her efforts—everything had gone to waste.
I constantly asked myself if it had been the right thing to do.
"After the Fenrir HQ Reclamation Initiative, I returned to Arrowhead for a time, remember? That was when I received this."
I took out a photo from my bag.
It was a picture of Eir smiling in her hometown, surrounded by children.
At their feet were colorful flowers in full bloom.
When I returned the handkerchief, I had secretly wrapped up some seeds for my favorite flower in it.
It seemed Eir had been able to make those seeds sprout in her hometown.
The letter that had come with the photo had just one sentence: May your dream come true.
"...She looks happy."
I wanted to believe she had finally started walking her own path.
"Luca. I know there are people out there who just can't understand each other because of differences in birth or status. I want to help everyone I can, alongside all of you, but... I..."
I wondered if I could truly be close to their hearts.
The words I almost said, but hesitated.
"We're all glad to have met you, Claire."
Luca smiled, as if he had sensed something.
"Back at Pennywort, everyone with just one armlet was an enemy. So, when I met you, I was surprised... and relieved."
Luca's pure eyes were fixated on me as I sat there, stunned.
"I'm sure there are lots of people in this world who feel the same way as you. Maybe someday, we'll find each other."
"Luca..."
"There's no need to worry. You've always been our hope."
His words made my eyes well up with tears.
Eir. At the end of the path you gave me, there were many friends waiting for me.
"I'd like to meet Eir someday, too. Let's find our way there together."
"...Right! Thank you. I'm sure she'll be excited."
Here, everyone supported each other's hopes.
Because of that, I, too, wanted to support this gentle light and be a source of hope for someone else.
Until one day, I could hold my head high and meet her again.

Idea for a “Dark Pictures Anthology” future installment:
1) TITLE
The Dark Pictures Anthology Presents: The Ortolan Songbird
2) PROLOGUE
1616, Scotland. A merchant named Callum McDonald and his wife, Shirley McDonald, are on their way to the town of Girvan when their wagon breaks down. As Callum attempts to repair the wagon, the couple are approached by a strange man who offers to help them out.
When Callum asks for the man’s name, the man says his name is Alexander “Sawney” Bean.
At some point, Sawney invites Callum and Shirley to spend the night at his clan’s home in Bennane Head. The couple agrees and follows Sawney back to his clan…where they are ambushed, killed, and cannibalized by Sawney and his entire family.
3) MAIN STORY
Present day, Edinburgh, Scotland. Famous American horror author Matthew Chen and his wife, Gale Chen, are visiting Scotland for vacation. The couple meets with their friends who live in Scotland; the reckless partygoer Samuel Campbell and the popular social media influencer Quinn Anderson. Together, the four decide that the first thing they should do for fun is eat dinner at “The Hairy Tree”, a restaurant in Edinburgh that has earned 3 Michelin stars.
Separate from this group of friends is private investigator Fiona Henderson. She is hired by a family to find their daughter Mary, who went missing several months ago. Despite the fact she had very little clues to work with, Fiona gets a break in the case that leads her to The Hairy Tree.
At The Hairy Tree, the special dish being served that night is the infamous Ortolan songbird. A dish so heinous that, according to French tradition, the eater must drape themselves with a linen napkin to hide from God. (brief history lesson: the birds are forced to grow in size and then thrown into a container of Armagnac, which drowns them)
The lead chef is Arnold Bean, who runs the restaurant with his entire family. Despite Matthew, Gale, Samuel, Quinn, and Fiona being slightly disturbed by what was being served, they mainly brush off their nerves. It isn’t until after dinner when the five realize something is…off about the restaurant. The meat and wine don’t taste normal, Matthew notices one guest who went to the bathroom hasn’t returned, and the lead chef is eerily obsessed with upholding “family tradition”.
When the five protagonists start asking questions about the establishment, that’s when the night takes a massive turn. The Bean family takes the five protagonists hostage and throws them into the meat locker, along with all the other people they’ve captured recently. Much to the group’s horror, they realize that the Hairy Tree isn’t just a restaurant…it’s a butcher shop.
Depending on the players’ choices, Matthew, Gale, Samuel, Quinn and Fiona can survive the night and take the Bean family down once and for all…or become the family’s next meal.
4) INFLUENCES/INSPIRATIONS
There are two real-life inspirations here; the Sawney Bean legend and the Ortolan songbird. Sawney Bean and his family were a clan of cannibals who apparently killed over 1000 people. Fun fact, Wes Craven said the Sawney Bean legend inspired him to make “The Hills Have Eyes”. As for the Ortolan, that one I included simply because it’s the one fine dining dish that disturbs me.
As for movies and TV inspirations, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” is an obvious one since this is about a family of cannibals. “House of 1000 Corpses” is another one. The Terminus/Hunters arc from “The Walking Dead” is also another good point of reference.
And, of course, Hannibal Lecter. If you know your B-movies, “Cannibal Holocaust” and “The Green Inferno” also come to mind.
5) MAIN PLAYABLE CAST
a. Quinn Anderson (INTELLIGENT, RESOURCEFUL, PERSUASIVE): A popular Scottish social media influencer who is friends with Matthew, Gale, and Samuel. She is played by the celebrity guest, Rose Leslie (you may recognize her as Ygritte from “Game of Thrones).
b. Matthew Chen (RATIONAL, OVERBEARING, COMMANDING): A famous American author who was on vacation with his wife, Gale. His face model is Jozef Aoki, whose face was also used for Cpl. Merwin and Danny (Man of Medan).
c. Gale Chen (RELAXED, KIND, FORTHRIGHT): Matthew’s wife. Her face model is Ashley Voom, whose face was also used for Felicity Graves (Hidden Agenda) and Suzanne Daniels (The Inpatient).
d. Samuel Campbell (FOOLHARDY, INSECURE, IMPULSIVE): A reckless partygoer who is friends with Matthew, Gale, and Quinn. His face model is Leonardo Patane, whose face was also used for Jeff Whitman, Simon Carver and Leonard Carson.
e. Fiona Henderson (INQUISITIVE, STOIC, CHARMING): A private investigator who has come to the Hairy Tree to follow up on a lead about a missing girl. Her face model is Zara Sparkes, whose face was also used for Julia (Man of Medan) and Marie Whitman.
6) PROLOGUE/FALSE PROTAGONISTS
a. Callum McDonald: Merchant who was killed by Sawney Bean and his family. His face model is Sukesh Khosla, whose face was also used for John (Little Hope), Dar Basri, and Granthem Du'Met.
b. Shirley McDonald: Callum’s wife, who was killed by Sawney Bean and his family. Her face model is Rachel Dobell, whose face was also used for Angela (Little Hope).
7) THE MAIN VILLAINS
Sawney Bean / Arnold Bean: Sawney is the legendary historical figure who, along with his clan, cannibalized over 1000 people. Arnold Bean is Sawney’s direct descendant who decides to continue the “family tradition” by serving humans in his restaurant, The Hairy Tree.
As a side note, Arnold and his entire family are the overall main villains of this game. So, the players will have to deal with an entire clan of cannibals. You can think of this game as a take on the cannibal tribe genre of horror movies.
The face model for both Sawney and Arnold is Dawid Kocieda, whose face was also used for Eric King.
8) SURVIVABILITY OF EACH PROTAGONIST
a. Callum and Shirley will die no matter what. How they die and the order in which they die is determined by the players’ choices.
b. Gale Chen is the first protagonist who can possibly be killed off (the end of Act 1)
c. Samuel Campbell or Matthew Chen can be the second protagonist who can possibly be killed off (the middle of Act 2). There’s a sequence where, if the players make bad choices, at least one will die.
d. Quinn Anderson or Fiona Henderson can be the third protagonist who can possibly be killed off (the end of Act 2). Just as before, there’s a sequence where, if the players make bad choices, at least one will die.
e. If the players have killed off all the possible characters they can before Act 3, then you can end up with the following pairs in the final act -
Samuel and Quinn / Samuel and Fiona / Matthew and Quinn / Matthew and Fiona
Of course, you can still make choices that kill off the last two survivors. All that being said, just like all the other Dark Pictures games, every character has a chance to survive at the end or be killed off. You can have a Gale sole survivor ending, everyone survives, no one survives, Matthew and Samuel survive, Fiona and Quinn survive, and so on.
