Feeling a distinct "please clap" emotion after doing over 100 pages of reading today along with helping Scribe complete a thick packet of surprise disability paperwork, attending class earlier this morning, and renewing various prescriptions, all on maybe 4 or 5 hours of actual sleep and while only partially medicated.

what’s a very petty and/or specific beef you have in your field of study?

The Piezoresistive effect - not to be confusted with the "Piezoelectric" effect - is basically what we call it when we stretch something and it's resistance changes. Officially its like "the change in resistance with respect to the change in deformation", and that deformation is what we call "strain" for math purposes. When an object is under "strain" it's been loaded by forces so much that the SOLID body is Changing Shape. It's impressive. And it matters for machine and manufacturing and transport, but also like medicine and health sensors and shit. And so we have "Strain Sensors" (or "Strain Gauges"), which work through -- GET THIS: The Piezoresistive effect.

"But Nagi! We've had Strain Gauges since the 1930's! But the Pizoresistive effect was only studied in the 1950's! Explain yourself!!" And I hear you my friend. And I'm impressed with your knowledge of the history of Strain Sensors! But I hear you and I understand. The explanation is that time is nonlinear! No wait I mean that date's aren't always reliable!

In FACT! We've known about the phenomenon relating deformation and change in resistance for OVER 100 YEARS!

It was a person called Walter Thomson, and his paper "On the Electro-Dynamic Qualities of Metals:--Effects of Magnetization on the Electric Conductivity of Nickel and of Iron" Published in 1857. That's right, None Other Than The Illustrius LORD KELVIN Himself!

What part of "Effects of Magnetization" Implies Resistance and Deformation? AND YOU'D BE RIGHT TO ASK!!

In FACT! Having read this 166 year old paper myself! It is In Fact NOT The Paper that discusses what would later become known as the Piezoresistive effect!

The REAL CULPRIT Was Herbert Tomlinson, A fellow member of the British Royal Society and contemporary of Lord Kelvin. Tomlinson published his work, "On Resistance to the Passage of an Electric Current" in 1876, almost 20 Years After the commonly attrubuted Kelvin publication.

Which can only mean...

THE ORIGINAL PEOPLE WHO WROTE ON PIEZORESISTANCE DIDN'T READ THE ARTICLES THEMSELVES!

But I want to graduate with my PhD in tact, and to bring academic attention to what at most generously is a 60 year old mistake by bleary-eyed researchers in a pre-computer age would be more drama than I want associated with my career, so I just find sidelong ways to attribute it correctly while not correcting the previous researchers in daylight.
