1989 australian grand prix 

idk where to start with this one:

the race was just two weeks after ~that~ japanese grand prix where prost and senna had collided, senna had been dsq’d and prost became wdc

so tensions at mclaren were... high

prost was the champion, but mclaren were appealing the result of the japanese grand prix (awkward)

so, if senna won the australian gp, he could still become champion if his dsq from japan was overturned

however on race day the weather conditions in adelaide were atrocious

prost, gerhard berger, n*lson p*quet, thierry boutsen, riccardo patrese and alessandro nannini wanted the race start to be delayed over safety concerns at the heavy rain

senna did not agree and stayed sat in his car on the grid. in the rain.

the race started, senna and prost nearly crashed at the first corner AGAIN and the race was immediately red flagged for several crashes further down the field

there was a lengthy delay where barry sheene (ex motorcycle racer and for some reason f1 presenter for australian tv) ran up and down the pitlane trying to find out what was going on like a proto-ted kravitz

prost refused to restart and pulled into the pits, leaving the way clear for senna to win the race and potentially the championship

when the race started again senna quickly built a massive lead

he then crashed into martin brundle while trying to lap him in the spray and retired. goodbye wdc.

the race was stopped early, after only 70 laps were completed. the podium was boutsen, nannini and patrese (y’know, the guys who wanted the race delayed)
