Artists of Tumblr, I know almost none of you will read this, but I implore each and every one of you to reconsider using proprietary software (that is, "closed source" software you can't modify) such as Abdobe products, Apple products or Microsoft products for your work, if you can help it. I know, a lot of open source alternatives are jankier, or different enough that you will have to re-learn a lot, but you can't stop a company run by face eating pumas to put puma compartments into their products. They WILL use your art for AI training. They WILL randomly try to claim ownership over your livelihood and IPs. They WILL, at every opportunity, and without warning, use you and your work for NFTs, targeted ads, marketing, finger printing, and whatever hot new techbro memes will await all of us in the future. They will quietly add a patch or change their ToS and vendor-locked in you will only be able to opt-out as long as they let you. They have done all of the above, repeatedly, openly, legally. And the closest thing you can expect from backlash is a solemn apology jpeg on twitter before they try it again a few years later.

Free aka open source software has always been about more than tech enthusiasts being able to tweak their playthings. It has always been about more than establishing a right to repair for software. It has always been about being able to protect people from products that were broken purposefully and maliciously for profit. The free software movement started over a fucking printer company handing out broken drivers and refusing to give out the source to fix them.

I cannot warn you people enough. I am sorry if this is preachy. But it will happen again. I'm sorry but it's the only way out.

Weird question maybe but what laptop do you have? Mine finally stopped turning on and I need a new one for work and writing and I don't want to just give in and buy a mac

I decided to try a Samsung bc I like my phones a lot and went "let's see how this goes!" Bad idea. The touchpad/mouse can be activated just by grabbing the base. I have clicked into things just by putting pressure *around* the touchpad. The speakers, for some reason, are on the bottom, so everything is weirdly low and muffled if you use it on anything that isn't a hard surface. You know, like a lap. Or my bed, where I watch videos at night. It sucks. 2/10 do not buy. The only thing that's kept me from buying a new one is that I just got it. Although looking back, it's been almost 2 years... But still, I can't bring myself to buy a new one when it *technically* works fine

I will never buy a Mac tbh. Apple and their proprietary bullshit can go to hell

And this, kids, is why when you want to buy new hardware for your company, you buy standard stuff! For real though, who's the genius at QNAP that decided they were gonna make an enterprise grade NAS with a single board computer based on ARM v7? Fuck you. When the server reaches your pathetic EOSL, what happens? It stops being maintained and it has to be decommissioned. What happens then if someone wants to buy it back? Do they have to plug a security vulnerability on the network? All of that because you decided that using the cheapest components was a better idea? "But Yuka, you can hack the firmware to install Linux on it so you still have security updates" Debian isn't compiled for ARM Marvell anymore. The only version of Debian that is ready to install for this machine is Debian 10 which reached it's EOL only 2 years later! And that's not even taking into account the fact that you have to work around the system to flash the installer to the poor 16MB of unupgradable flash memory on board! "But further updates are too heavy on the system. It's just not powerful enough" Which is why it should have been made with standard components! So you can upgrade and maintain it! And then again, I'm not the one who decided that *an enterprise grade storage server* only needed 1GB of RAM! Tell me, oh great defender of garbage ideas, why do I have in my room a laptop from 2008 running ArchLinux in glorious 64bits with a desktop environment and everything if the system if just not powerful enough to get further updates? Tell me how the system is not powerful enough for updates when I used TrueNas Scale on my main storage server built on a Core2Duo from 2006! Not to even get into the default software of this thing which by itself is a crime but this isn't about that

Jfc Windows, forced updates are one thing but unannounced forced updates that automatically install and reboot my computer overnight are something else entirely, like actively hostile to the user. I frequently leave calculations running overnight when I leave the office so that they're done when I get back in the morning, but now I can't trust my computer to not shut itself down and kill the calculation. Clown shoes operating system.
