So, let's delve a bit into the Spanish dub of Supernatural.
I'm going to go through a lot of terms here, and a lot of basics, in order to increase people's level of understanding as to how the dub may possibly have come about the way it did.
This post will provide information and, I hope, allow some members of the fandom to move forward with their own theories with more reassurance. Information is power. I will define and clarify industry terms to the best of my novice ability to make it easier for others who wish to do their own research.
This post was inspired by the fact that I've been part of multiple fandoms in which queerbaiting has played an enormous part: I am tired of seeing fandom friends left devastated and without answers, no emotional resolution in sight. So this post is, in spirit if not content, largely dedicated to my fellow Johnlockers and Queliot shippers. And most of all, for Quentin Coldwater, who deserved not just better but the very best.
Disclaimer: This is my own research and there is a bit of speculation involved; I can't guarantee 100% that I will get everything right (I hit some very frustrating walls looking up what should be easy-to-find facts), but I did a *lot* of work for this. Other people will doubtless be able to clarify points/give better specifics/correct what I've gotten wrong. I am not promising a concrete answer to “SPN gate” here, as without more information than we currently have that is impossible to declare with certainty.
More under the cut.
All that having been said, onwards (see end for sources):
First, who airs the Spanish dub of Supernatural?
Answer: the Warner Channel.
Why? It goes back to who owns The CW.
From Wikipedia (2): "The CW Network, LLC, a limited liability joint venture between the CBS Entertainment Group unit of ViacomCBS; and the Studios and Networks division of AT&T's WarnerMedia, the parent company of Warner Bros., former majority owner of The WB. The network's name is an abbreviation derived from the first letters of the names of its two parent corporations (CBS and Warner Media)."
Warner Bros apparently is the side that handles the delegation of dubbing to outside studios. So, who does Warner use for their dubbing? Perhaps multiple studios, but the two I found in the course of my research were SPGStudios(5) (who specifically handle localization for Latin American Spanish productions) and Iyuno Media Group (formerly BTI Studios)(3).
What is localization?
Simply put, it refers to the translation of the home language of the show in question to the language of the new market it's entering. So, Supernatural 15x18 is translated from its native English to Spanish for Latin American viewers.
And what exactly *is* dubbing (actually called revoicing within the industry; dubbing is a widely-recognized term, however, and it's pretty well understood what is meant by it)?
Here is the Merriam-Webster definition:
"1 : to add (sound effects or new dialogue) to a film or to a radio or television production —usually used with "in"
They dubbed in the music.
2 : to provide (a motion-picture film) with a new soundtrack and especially dialogue in a different language
The film was dubbed in French and Spanish.
3 : to make a new recording of (sound or videotape already recorded) also : to mix (recorded sound or videotape from different sources) into a single recording"
There is a slang term, "dubby," which refers to any overdub that is comically jarring and obviously a dub. The history of dubbing has been such that this has become a way to think of and recognize it: by how awful and ineffective it used to be when it came to foreign films sloppily overlaid with English dubbing.
However, we are in the midst of an age of networks and companies scrambling to play catch-up, eager to use modern technology to create more effective, convincing dubs. In short, they see the moneymaking potential of presenting finished works that viewers may not even realize *are* dubbed without careful inspection. It's true that a good dub is about 10x more costly than subtitling, but it's hard to satisfy the viewer's desire for escapism if they can't suspend disbelief because they're busy reading.
The truth of that is reflected in internal statistics Netflix (for instance, but not just them) parses to gauge viewer interaction and retention with their various shows: when comparing subtitled vs. dubbed shows, it's easy to see which is the winner.(1)
So to be sure there is no nefarious intent here, we would need to be able to identify the following:
A.) What exactly was the process for this dub?
B.) Who decides what changes to make during a dubbing process?
C.) Who approves those changes?
*Can* there be such a thing as a "rogue translator," as Misha Collins put it? (I am going to clarify here that I think Misha is an upstanding person who believed the best of the show he was involved in and all the people who made it, so his assumption of a rogue translator makes sense in the context of that emotion-based reasoning).
I'm not sure which studio did the dub for the Latin American Spanish version of Supernatural; if I had access to that episode perhaps it's mentioned in the credits. You'd think that would be simple enough to figure out anyway, but I was unable. So maybe someone can take a look and let me know. But, as an example, here is how SPGStudios outlines their localization (dubbing) process:
1.) They make a digital or analog transcription of a show/movie.
2.) The translation, or localization, is done by their staff (in any of 40 available languages their staff can speak). When translating, they translate for meaning and then adapt for time, tempo, and style. They say that "extensive experience is required to capture the essence of the language dialog while accounting for variances in speaking time between the source and destination languages." i.e., wording/word choice will be kept as true as possible to the original intention of the native language, but at the same time the translation will need to use its chosen wording in a way that fits what is being shown on-screen. To produce a convincing/pleasing dub, they won't replace a word like "looked" with a longer phrase like "scanned the horizon" because it's not going to match what's onscreen. That would be venturing into "dubby" territory.
3.) They perform the ADR process: the voice actors (in this case it would normally be Guillermo Rojas performing for Dean Winchester, though it appears things may have been different in 15x18, possibly due to covid) record the new dialogue to replace the original actor's performance.
4.) The newly recorded dialogue goes to the sound editorial department "to ensure that lip-synch is optimized and technical aspects of the vocal performance match the original."
5.) All of the new audio--including dialogue, music, and sound effects--is mixed together to emulate the quality of the original production as closely as possible despite the changes in rhythm that resulted from the dialog having been translated.
6.) Designers, animators, and VFX editors assist with the localization or enhancement of graphics, if needed.
7.) Localized Master: SPG has a 'traffic team' who 'ensures that all client delivery and storage specifications are met, including file formatting, labeling, and uploading." So in other words, the files are heavily encrypted (or that's how I read this).
Presumably, after all steps are performed, SPGStudios transfers the show back to Warner, who then distributes it. The other studio, Iyuno, makes it very clear that *they* can coordinate and handle all distribution themselves to a vast number of networks. That means that if the client desires, Iyuno can send the finished product directly out into the world.
There seem to be two types of scripts that can be given to the dubbing company:
1.) "In-Production Dubbing indicates that dubbing production is active in tandem with post production. In-Production Dubbing fulfillment partners should expect potential changes to source materials."(4)
2.) "Final Asset Dubbing indicates that dubbing production takes place after final delivery of the show. All source assets will be in a final state. The dubbing fulfillment partner should not expect any changes to the source materials."(4)
Without knowing which of these was agreed upon for SPN 15x18, it is very hard to say exactly where or if additional edits may have been performed on the original material that weren't performed on the translated material (in other words, earlier draft).
If the studio was given the episode as an In-Production Dubbing project, this could explain why the title of the Spanish translation reflected the original script title, "The Truth," rather than the final title in English, "Despair".
Assuming this difference was unintentional, rather than a calculated marketing ploy re: audience enticement (which seems admittedly unlikely), then yes, it could indicate a screw-up on someone's part. The question is, was the dub company given the task of generating the title card, or did some other graphics department handle that before the project made it to them? If the latter is the case, the choice to add "Me too" instead of "Don't do this, Cas" could be either a conscious choice on the dub studio's part as sort of a nod to what they thought "the truth" was, or could just be them going with what they were given and making their translation choices based on something else, such as rhythm/timing.
SO, could there have been an original script that had Dean say "me too" in response to Cas, which then went through translation and made it out into the world? Teeechnically yes, but one would assume that the original script and original *footage* would have to have arrived at the dub studio together if the script is being transcribed in-house as SPGSTudios outlines in their process. I'm going to reason that the odds of them using a later edit of the visual--one that contained what in this instance we would be assuming was Warner's preferred dialogue ("Don't do this, Cas") yet choosing to stick with their own audio revoicing of the (supposed) original script/visual's "Me too, Cas" with its now subsequently poor timing, seems unlikely.
So either they would likely have to redo the exact same "Me too" audio again (having made the choice to keep the original dialogue, while also having to work under pandemic restrictions re: travel and talent availability) to make everything match the visual footage time-wise, OR, it was simply a matter that the English scene always was just as we saw it, but that the studio chose to interpret the script the way they did and were able to do their timing the first time around to match accordingly.
This still leaves a question in the air regarding the origin and fate of certain clips of Dean's more visually emotive reaction to Castiel's confession that have been floating around the internet. I've only seen very very brief glimpses of them, myself, and I'm not certain that they're really evidence of anything other than more than one take having been done of that scene, which wouldn't be uncommon and doesn't necessarily point to a conspiracy.
I also want to state that in the wake of 15x18, I opted to protect my mental health rather than follow every development/rumor/speculation that cropped up in the aftermath, so there’s probably a lot that I’m leaving out of this post that may be pertinent. Do me a favor and do assume that I know nothing of it. lol
I will also add this about the other studio, Iyuno: they are very careful to state on their site, repeatedly and with great pride, that they are committed to presenting the world with the smoothest, most true-to-the-original localized version of a film or show possible. Quote: "...our entire team of staff wants nothing more than to make every single one of our partner's content feel as if it were never translated." They are not fucking around. They want to please the client. Would they have done something like the translation in question without any direct go-ahead from Warner? It seems unlikely, though they don't outline their process on their site the way SPG does.
Notice that in the SPGStudios process outlined above, there is no mention made of a review step in which the studio presents the translated dialogue to the client for approval re: the new wording. That doesn't mean there isn't a review step; however, without seeing the contractual agreement that was made between Warner and whatever dub studio they used, or knowing Warner's preferred process by some other means, it's difficult to be certain whether or not there was a review process for the translated script. I did find evidence that Netflix reserves the right to review such translated scripts before air.
Speaking of Netflix, I will include here what their translation requirements are, as I did find those. They, like Warner, also use Iyuno Media Group much of the time for dubbing (voiceover style dubbing in which they apparently like to leave the original language audible underneath, so that's slightly different from revoicing, but I'm working on an assumption that the general expectations are the same for both):(4)
"1. Translation Requirements
1.1 Main Dialogue
All main dialogue in the source (original) language should be translated unless specifically noted.
Due to timing limitations, some of the dialogue may be condensed/truncated as long as it retains all essential elements of the plot.
Please refrain from dubbing redundant words such as character names and repetitions.
Additionally, do not recreate laughs, hesitations, reaction noises, etc."
I'm looking at that bit: "Due to timing limitations, some of the dialogue may be condensed/truncated as long as it retains all essential elements of the plot."
So let's say just for argument's sake that this is pretty standard language provided to the dubbing studios. Netflix is a giant, so I'll proceed with that assumption given the lack of more concrete information:
Does it really change essential elements of the remaining plot to have Dean return Castiel's declaration of love? Forgetting about the outside, emotional ripple effect such a declaration was bound to set off in the viewing audience, no. The two characters have no further scenes together, nor does Dean go on in the next episode to immediately embark on a new relationship, or tell anyone that Cas said he was in love with him but he couldn't return it because he didn't feel the same. So technically, no rule was broken. And that is what it comes down to, if you're thinking like a lawyer reading a contract: specifics, not theoretical implications or consequences.
So, possibly what we have is something that was simple to add and easy to get away with/argue for: translated dialog that fit a dub better due to its length, and didn't actually change anything plot-wise (or at least, the argument for that could easily be made). This points to the painful crux of the matter: why would the Spanish version of Supernatural which aired in Latin America allow Dean Winchester to return Castiel's declaration of love with a "Me too, Cas"? Could it *really* be as insulting as the fact that "Yo a ti, Cas" would be a quicker, smoother dub than "No hagas esto, Cas"? ("Don't do this, Cas" in English.) Or did they see something they could get away with, and a reasonable argument to provide for it, so they went ahead and claimed a small LGBT+ victory?
Is someone, somewhere, getting in trouble for all this? Maybe. But could action be taken against them? That would look pretty bad, public-relations-wise, for the party expressing condemnation if that got out. Could Iyuno, or whatever other studio (again, I don't actually know which one handled the dub) theoretically feel a ripple effect from the fallout of this? Could they quietly suffer a drop in acquisitions/revenue for "reasons unclear"? Sure. That sort of thing happens all the time, so theoretically yeah.
Whatever the reasoning behind the decision to have Dean return Cas' declaration of love, surely they didn't have to do it. Surely they could have chosen some other phrase that fit. But they chose to do exactly what they did. I don't know what went down, in the end, or whether censorship was indeed involved, but I will certainly say that I think it was a brave and admirable choice that was made with the Spanish dub. It doesn't undo the "bury your gays" trope of course, but for some LGBT+ audience members it surely provides a sense of validation and maybe even lends a little hope for better representation--which is long, long overdue.
Thanks if you read this far. I hope that even though it’s not perfect it will be helpful in some way.

Eva. Matthew Oladipupo Ogunsola
💎
All adorations are due to Almighty God for His preserving grace. Hallelujah !
Let us pray! Heavenly Father, the giver of life, thank you immensely for sparing our lives till today. It's my utmost prayer that grace to fulfill the very essence of our living and purpose of existence you give to us, impact us by your word in Jesus name amen !
Today's message is titled 'When You Run Out Of Strength'.
Our text is taken from the book of Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”
When we seemingly run out of strength, there is absolute need to renew our strength by waiting upon the Lord through reading His word, prayer, worship etc
Restoration in the Bible is synonymous with healing, repairing, returning to a previous state of being. Psalm 51:12 says "Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit." Although we may stray from steadfast faith and obedience, there are numerous Bible verses about restoration we can look to for inspiration for renewal in our lives.
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the verb "restore" as to bring back to or put back something to a former or original state (Restore, n.d.). The promise of restoration, “I will restore you to health and heal your wounds, declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 30:17, New International Version), is a repeated theme throughout the Bible, offering hope when all else seems to contradict it. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible is filled with rich images of healing and restoration—it is a consistent and persistent theme in both the Old and New Testaments. This theme of restoration provides a foundation for correctly understanding sin and suffering, God’s plan for His creation, and His unstoppable quest to save His people and restore them to His image.
In several Old and New Testament passages and stories, we encounter the God who intends for His people to be well and who works constantly to save and restore a creation so deeply wounded by sin. It was Christ’s mission to bring to men complete restoration. He came to give them health and peace and perfection of character.
Therefore, when we run out of strength ; we need Jesus Christ - the Master strength restorer.
The prophet Elijah had just gone from one of the greatest victories of his life to running away in defeat at the death threat of Queen Jezebel. He was sitting under a tree so depressed that he didn’t want to live. He said, “GOD, I’m done. It’s over.” He’d just seen a great miracle, but now he was tired of standing strong in faith.
May be you have been doing the right thing, praying and believing, but you have lost your drive. You may not have given up on life but given up on your dreams. Here is the good news: GOD doesn’t condemn us or disqualify us or write us off when we get tired. GOD sent an angel to cook and feed Elijah once, and then a second time to strengthen him. That is what He will do for you. He is going to cause blessings to chase you down. He is coming a second time to push you into the fullness of your destiny.
We are further instructed in the book of Romans 12:2 that "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."
Let us close with prayer ! Father, thank You for Your provisions all along our lives' journeys. Thank You for Your promise of coming to us a second time to renew us with strength and breathe new life into our dreams. I believe that You are coming again to cause blessings to chase us down in Jesus name, amen.

Promise
[JASON]
Promise: Webster's defines promise as a declaration that something will or will not be done.
[IVY]
Where have you been?
Is this some stupid game?
I meant it when I said I need to talk to you!
[JASON]
I understand, but Ivy, nothing's changed
[IVY]
You have no idea what I'm going through
[JASON]
I'll say it one more time
I'm sorry I don't feel the same
We had ourselves a moment, but it's gone
My head's in thirty different places
Please, just try to understand
Let's leave things at that and just move on
[IVY, spoken]
That night, we weren't safe. So tell me how we move on!
[JASON]
I don't know what it is you want from me!
I don't have time to hear whatever tale you've spun
I have to write this speech before tonight
Plus, there are all these scenes I have to run
[IVY]
You know what I am saying
I would never make this up
You're a winner. Pat your perfect back
Way to go, you got me pregnant:
Put that in your fucking speech
They wanted real:
Well, God, you'll give them that!
[JASON, spoken]
Shit! Why are you doing this to me? Shit.
[IVY]
But we're in this together
[JASON]
I've got to pull together
[IVY]
We'll take it one step at a time
[JASON]
Is this what I wanted?
Tell me, tell me what to do
[IVY]
Somehow we'll get through
And Jason, I still love you.
Someday, maybe...
[JASON]
Love me?
[IVY]
Someday maybe you can learn
Maybe you can
[JASON]
Maybe I can
[IVY]
Maybe you can
JASON and IVY]
Learn to love you too Learn to love me too
[IVY]
Maybe... please
[MATT]
Maybe he would love you
Maybe if he weren't that way
He wouldn't treat your feelings like his toy
Maybe he'd make you feel real special
Like I always wanted to
But he's already in love with a boy
[IVY, spoken]
What?
[PETER, spoken]
Am I late? What's going on?
[NADIA]
Jason, have you seen Ivy?
I guess you have
[JASON]
You knew?
[NADIA]
Only since this afternoon
[PETER]
Knew what?
[MATT]
Ivy's pregnant and your boyfriend's a dad
So what does that make you?
[PETER, spoken]
She's what? What the fuck are you talking about, 'my boyfriend'?
[MATT]
Don't play dumb with me, Peter
[JASON, spoken]
Get the fuck outta here, Matt.
[MATT]
Should I tell them what I saw at the rave?
Look, I'm not here to judge, just keep everyone on the same page
And, hey, I think I found that strong opening
You were looking for in your speech
[JASON, spoken]
Whatever, Matt, whatever you saw, it was a rave!
[MATT]
Are you gonna stand there and deny it?
I know
[JASON, spoken]
Oh, you know, huh? You fucking know, huh? What the fuck do you know?
[PETER, spoken]
He knows, Jason.
He knows because I told him. It was after Ivy's birthday. We were drunk. I'm sorry.
No. You know what? I'm not.
[IVY]
What is going on, Peter? Jason, is he kidding? Jason?
[JASON, spoken]
Look... Let's just run this scene.
(sung)
If I profane with my unworthiest hand
This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this
[JASON, spoken]
Peter.
[PETER, spoken]
Don't...
[JASON, spoken]
Peter, I don't know understand what's happening. I don't know what to do. You have to help me.
[PETER, spoken]
I tried.
[JASON, spoken]
You know what, then? Fuck you Peter! Fuck you.
[NADIA]
Jason, I don't know what to tell you
Here's one idea: I'd rule out calling Dad
I've thought it through, and I confess
I can't see through this mess
Maybe being single's not so bad
But you can solve this
I know you can
Don't forget that
Take my hand
Tell me what to do
What to say
Somehow we'll get through
We'll find a way
[JASON, spoken]
Yeah, I — thanks. I know. Can you leave me alone? I — I don't mean to be —
I just, I can’t —
[NADIA, spoken]
Sure, call me tonight. Or tomorrow. Or whenever, just, just call me...

Whatever I Wish God... If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. John 15:7 NIV Let me start by saying, these words apply to Christians who have declared Jesus Christ as Lord, believe through faith that Christ died and was risen by God. This is His promise to us in His Word as followers; many claim to know Him, even the devil knows Him. There is a clear difference between knowing Christ in your head and accepting Him in your soul. The difference between knowledge of Christ, our own good works, living in sin and unshakeable faith in Christ Jesus as our own savior who gives you the Holy Spirit bringing you to a Christ-like walk in life not of the world which encourages you to speak in long-suffering love, with compassion and kindness. I challenge you to think about it and ask yourself if you understand the difference. Back to the Gospel of John in its original Greek translates to English as per Abrams: “my words” as “the utterances of me.” Merriam-Webster defines utterance as 1. Something uttered especially an oral or written statement: a stated or published expression 2. Vocal expression: Speech 3. Power, style or manner of speaking So putting this together for clarity and understanding: if you remain in Jesus Christ and His words (or written statements; vocal expression; Jesus Christ’s power, style or manner of speaking) remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you. —— due to a lack of space please continue with this message in its entirety at https://www.nsagallery.co/blog/whatever-you-wish-god#/ https://www.instagram.com/p/BzBhH70Fax9/?igshid=1n8cb5j8weu4o

Is "Divine Providence" a Biblical Idea?

Clarence L. Haynes Jr.
Wednesday, June 17, 2020
Standing on trial today is divine providence. The case that is before you is designed to simply answer a question, really two questions. What is divine providence, and is it in the Bible?
We will build our case, present the evidence with the intention that by the time we are done you will see that divine providence is indeed a biblical concept. Let the trial begin.

What Does Divine Providence Mean?
Let’s begin by defining the term. Divine providence is all about God’s governance over the affairs of men and the destiny of humanity. He is carefully watching over and directing all things in the universe, ensuring that his will is accomplished in the earth. Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines it as such:
“God conceived as the power sustaining and guiding human destiny.”
Divine providence deals with God’s plan in the earth and God’s plan in your life. On a personal level, we see that it has to do with fulfillment of your destiny. God has a specific plan or destiny for your life and he works and orders things in your life to bring that destiny to fruition.
We also see that within the word providence is the word provide. When God moves you along, he supplies provision to help you reach the destination he has planned for you. To understand it fully, God has a specific purpose for your life and you trust him to bring to pass what he has purposed for you.
Another way of thinking about divine providence is entrusting our lives into his care. Where we trust that his plan, though we may not always understand it, is the best plan for our lives. A verse in Scripture that reminds us of this is Romans 8:28:
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
In this verse, we are the ones who love God and are called according to his purpose. Because of this we can trust that he is watching over our lives carefully to accomplish his plan and to work every situation in our lives for our good.
Pastor A.R. Bernard recently shared his experience in his battle with the coronavirus. He said at one point he was so sick he didn’t know if he was going to make it and he had to resign and trust in God’s providence. This is God’s plan and I am surrendering my life to it.
When you compare divine providence to regular providence here is the difference. According to Your Dictionary “regular” providence can mean:
1. A looking to, or preparation for, the future; provision
2. Skill or wisdom in management; prudence
Where they are similar is that they both involve carefully watching over something to help bring it to pass, to help plan for or achieve a desired end. Where they differ is simply who is the author of the plan.

Are There Bible Stories or Verses That Mention Divine Providence?
I mentioned at the outset that we are tackling two questions today, what is divine providence and is it in the Bible? Even though those two words don’t appear in Scripture together, (at least I haven’t found it yet, please let me know if you have), the concept is fairly evident all throughout Scripture.
One example of this is the life of Joseph. If you are unfamiliar with his story, here is the abbreviated version. He was sold by his brothers into slavery. He went to prison for a crime he didn’t commit. From prison, he was promoted to the palace and became the second highest in command in all of Egypt. You can read the full story starting in Genesis 37. When you get to the end of the story, (spoiler alert if you have never read it before) he is reconciled with his family and he made this statement:
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives” (Genesis 50:20).
Wrapped within this one verse of Scripture we see the full essence of God’s providence on display. God was carefully orchestrating and guiding Joseph’s destiny through his brother’s betrayal. Through the years he spent as a slave and a prisoner, God was working and guiding to bring Joseph to his destiny, so that through this one life he could save many.
I hope this sounds familiar, because this is exactly what Jesus did for us. This is probably the greatest example of divine providence. Jesus suffered through agony and torture, carrying the full weight of our sin, giving his life to save many.

How Does God Provide for His People?
We said before that at the root of this word providence is provide. All throughout the pages of Scripture you see evidence of God providing for his people. However, the ways he provides today may be different. For example, instead of having manna and quail rain down from heaven, he may provide you with a job that allows you to support your family.
Regardless of the type of society you live in, God will provide. If you live in an agricultural or farming society, he can send rain. If you live in an ocean society, he can send fish. If you live in a capitalist society, he can provide jobs and opportunities.
It doesn’t matter the circumstances, God will provide for his people.
Is God in Control of EVERYthing?
I know many times when chaos erupts in society, a question that pops into our minds is this – Is God still in control?
There are two laws at work simultaneously in the earth: God’s divine providence and the reality of man’s free will. Even though God is sovereign and his purpose will be established in the earth, he has never taken away man’s free will to choose. Consider what God told Noah after the flood:
“The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma and said in his heart: ‘Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done. As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease” (Genesis 8:21-22).
The evil condition of man’s heart does not negate God’s control over the earth. The evidence of evil in our society gives greater weight to the power of God’s divine providence because it often requires overcoming many of the realities and hurtful experiences we have in life. The reality of evil deeds does not weaken God’s providence, it actually strengthens it.
That’s what makes the story of Joseph so wonderful, that in spite of all the bad things that happened to him, God’s plan and destiny was still reached and accomplished in his life. Even the most arduous of circumstances can’t stop the fulfillment of God’s destiny for your life.

How Can We Have Faith in God's Plan?
To understand why we can have faith, I want to turn your attention to two Scriptures:
“’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
“But as the Scriptures say, ‘No one has ever seen, no one has ever heard, no one has ever imagined what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).
Here is why you can trust God’s plan – because it is the best thing going. If you truly believe that God loves you, then you must believe that he has nothing but the best planned for you. God’s plan for you is not limited to the number of years we live on this earth. God’s divine providence involves you spending your eternity with him, where you see and experience the fullness of God’s presence and the fullness of his joy. This is the destiny that God has prepared for you and he will carefully watch over it until it comes to pass.
“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ. And so through him the ‘Amen’ is spoken by us to the glory of God. Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come” (2 Corinthians 1:20-22).

The Conclusion?
Well jury, I have my presented my case as to what divine providence is and whether it is in the Bible. I hope I have done a good job of helping you understand its meaning and its relevance. At the heart of the matter is how much God loves you. Because of his great love, his divine providence is something that can be embraced and trusted. He has planned nothing but the best for you. Remember he is the Alpha, which means he has the first word, and the Omega, which means he has the last word. As I close my case here is the last word on the subject:
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.’ He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:3-4).
This is the divine providence that God has stored up for you.

Repeat after me: A better world starts with the best version of me.
Sounds a little self-centered, doesn’t it? Well, I want you to embrace that feeling for a moment. Let it settle into your body and make itself comfortable. Because I’m here to help you understand how focusing on your own health and wellness can lead to a better world.
Self-care. Say it out loud.
What Is Self-Care?
Self-care means asking yourself what you need and following through on the honest answer. Self-care can be as simple as getting to bed earlier on a work night, or as hard as taking a look at some of the habits you’ve created for yourself and their long-term effects.
Self-care is essential. It’s human work we all need. Not just the activists among us, but every one of us who’s been paying attention for the last few years and watching our communities come apart. We all feel the weight of this time we’re living in, and we are all being called to do our part to ensure a more perfect Union.
Self-care is essential. It’s human work we all need. Not just the activists among us, but every one of us who’s been paying attention for the last few years and watching our communities come apart.
If you’re a politically active, socially conscious individual, or simply someone whose awareness has been running on all cylinders for the last few years and have experienced burnout, secondary trauma, or compassion fatigue (yes, these are all real things!), it’s time for you to gather your sisters and brothers and declare that 2019 is the year that you will learn to be a self-care taker so that you can continue to be an effective caretaker of our democracy. Being whole and meeting our own emotional and physical needs first, is the only way we will build the world we want to see in the future—together!
Self-Care is a Radical Act of Love
As a community organizer and political and social justice activist, one of the ways I know I can contribute is by sharing some of the self-care tools I’ve learned over the past two years. This “Self-Care for Politically Charged Times” series was borne out of my own personal plight with burnout and compassion fatigue—riding high and fully charged in 2016, sputtering through most of 2017, and, finally, experiencing complete burnout in early 2018.
I had reached a point where I needed some serious self-care and a personal recharge if I was going to have any momentum in time for the 2018 primaries. This experience resulted in a promise to myself that I would never go back to a place of ineffectiveness, defeat and malfunction—and a promise to do whatever I could to ensure that no one is left behind, feeling depleted, exhausted, and hopeless.
We are creating the world we want to see by sowing seeds of love. And that can only be done if we include love for ourselves in the mix. Our rallying cry for 2019 is: Self-Care is a radical act of love.
For me, personally, I’d continue that sentence by saying “Self Care is a radical act of love that increases my capacity for impact!”
But self-care means something different to everyone. That’s one of it’s most transformational and unifying properties. What will focussing on self-care allow you to do this year? What will your impact be?
We know that self-care is good for us—it increases our emotional and physical health, it builds resilience, and paves the way for kind, compassionate engagement with the world around you.
Self-care is not always fun, sometimes it’s boring, guilt-inducing, and very heavy. By prioritizing self-care you’re making a choice to nourish the core of your being, tap into your sense of humanity, community, and responsibility for our path forward, and communicate with compassion across seeming political divides so we change our future for the better. Are you ready?
The Five Rules for Self-Care in Politically Charged Times
1) Your “Self” is Bigger Than You
We feel guilty about self-care because it goes against everything we’ve been taught about being a good human being, let alone an effective activist. Self-care means putting ourselves first and we’ve been conditioned to believe this is wrong and selfish. Real change-makers are meant to suffer and endure hardship; proper nutrition, healthy relationships, and exercise are frivolous, right? Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malala Yousafzai—these individuals are forever linked to self-sacrifice and suffering. Martin Luther King, Jr. didn’t have time for self-care!
The word “self” has a negative connotation in this context because it seems to be only about the individual. But we need to expand our view of the “self” beyond the individual to include everyone we touch: our families, our communities, the whole of the natural world. When we practice self-care, we hone our interactions with everything around us: we protect the world around us. Imagine the powerful transformation that would happen if everyone took care in this way.
Self-care is not a virtue. It’s the means by which you make your work consistent with what you want to create in this world.
2) Self-Care is Inclusive
One of the main issues with the way self-care is viewed today is that it’s mostly geared toward women who are white and of means. It’s become associated with the purchase of goods and services that are indulgent and frivolous. This is one of the reasons self-care is also seen as an “occasional” practice.
But let me be clear: self-care is for everyone—men, minorities, people of color, and individuals who are struggling to make ends meet.
Self-care is a collective goal, not a commodity good. In order for us to collectively be successful, this is an essential paradigm shift that needs to happen. Only when the organizations we support, run, and invest our time and money in start viewing self-care as a pillar rather than a luxury, will begin to see liberty and justice for all. Only when we each take responsibility for ourselves and our compassionate hearts, will we be able to achieve our unalienable rights of life, liberty, and happiness.
3) Self-care is Not Self-Indulgence.
Merriam Webster’s defines self-indulgence as the “excessive or unrestrained gratification of one’s own appetites, desires, or whims.” Self-indulgence is usually comprised of behaviors that alter our mood or provide us with a means of temporary escape.
How can you tell the difference between indulgence and true acts of self-care? Ask yourself if the act is a quick-fix or something that truly serves you. Does the quick-fix yield long-term benefits or is it potentially harmful? And then, once you figure out what will truly serve YOU, fight the urge to feel guilty about doing it. The truth is, doing what serves you is actually a selfless act—One that will make you a more engaged and impassioned person.
4) Self-Care is Difficult and Worth the Work
Self-care can be really hard because it’s a long-term play. Ironically, so is our political and social justice work. We all know that very rarely if ever, do landscapes change overnight, but we fail to understand that this also applies to well-being. It is much easier for us to make decisions that feel good right now (“quick-fixes”) than it is to have the discipline to make decisions that may suck now but feel really great later.
Here are some examples of how self-care takes prioritization and discipline:
Committing to only watching one episode of “Game of Thrones” and getting to bed at a decent hour so you get a full night’s rest.
Not always feeling the need to have a drink with dinner or saying no to that second drink at a party.
Learning to say “no” when you don’t want to or can’t do something.
Waking up early so you have time to meditate, journal, or work out.
5) Self-Care is Not One-Size Fits All
If you are thinking that you have to start giving up most of your vices in order to truly dedicate yourself to self-care and to larger causes in 2019, the answer to a large-degree is yes. If the work we are doing in the world is larger than ourselves, then we must define clear boundaries that help ensure our long-term physical, mental, and spiritual health. If you’ve been doing something that causes you to think to yourself “I really need to stop doing this,” then this is your invitation to take your own advice. (Remember, I told you that self-care can be difficult)
That’s not to say there aren’t healthy indulgences we can enjoy. These are defined by small actions we can take that help us restore balance in our lives, and bring us joy and happiness. It can be spending an evening reading a good book, not responding to texts or emails for a few hours, or having a meal with a friend while engaging in meaningful conversation. None of these things are frivolous.
The point is this: self-care is not one-size fits all. Ask yourself what you need and then listen.
If you’ve read this far, then please take the next steps with me and Mindful on this self-care journey. This Friday at 11:30 am Eastern I’ll be live in our private Facebook group, leading a guided meditation and answering any questions you have about self-care, activism, building a community of care together. We’ve created this space for us to get together over the next 8 weeks, to prime ourselves for what’s sure to be a crazy few years. I hope to see you there.

Resistance
What is authoritarianism and why is it unacceptable? As described by Webster dictionary, it can be defined as the enforcement or advocacy of strict obedience to authority at the expense of personal freedom. In short it is an authority figure restricting your rights as a citizen and as a human. It is not hard to see why this is a problem and why it needs to be stopped. Authoritarianism is unacceptable because your personal rights are limited and you really do not have any say in the government you are living in. This causes massive problems as some governments take full advantage of their power enforcing laws without the thought of how it will affect the community. Communities affected by authoritarianism are unsatisfied and feel they have no control. Nowadays it is not as big a problem as it once was, but there are still some places affected such as China, North Korea, and Egypt. Looking at these places from an outside perspective gives some insight into how negatively impacted authoritarianism has on the community. China is a good example of the government enacting wrongful laws to prevent growth or criticism. It is illegal to start political parties; you cannot lobby the government or present views that oppose the Chinese government. Another attack to limit civilian rights is the law put in place that has rid the internet of google, which was seen as a way to discourage the Chinese leader. These are just a few examples of the problems with authoritarianism, but there are ways to resist authoritarianism. Hope is not at all lost, with tons of courage and methodical thinking change can be obtained.
Ten ways to resist authoritarianism:
1. Form a group
Forming a group can be vital in unifying fellow citizens to seek change. Having people on your side can help support the change to resist authoritarianism by having the one thing that is more powerful than the government, the community. Think about it in order for the government to have power we have to believe that they have power. We submit ourselves to the law and the norms written out by the government. Without this submissiveness there is no power. Groups can be seen being used throughout history. Most the time a group of people or a coalition can be seen as the main opponent to the government.
Serbia is a prime example of people forming a group to oppose authoritarianism. During the late nineties and early two-thousands Serbia was under control of a ruthless leader, Slobodan Milosevic. Serbian citizens felt the need for change and formed a resistance group called, Otpor. Otpor at first was a civic protest group, then formed into a resistance movement. As they became more successful and could see actual change more and more people backed them up as much as 70,000 people backed Otpor. They sought to overthrow Milosevic, with constant persistence it happened. In October of 2000 Milosevic was thrown out of office due mainly to the efforts of Otpor. Not only did they help overthrow the leader they also kept the government in check after this monumental event. Otpor kept the government in check by making sure they kept the promises they made after Milosevic was out of office, pressing for reforms to be passed that put society back in equilibrium, and fighting government corruption. Change is possible, it will not be easy but with persistence and enough people behind you good will prevail.
2. Use Social Media
In today’s society social media and the internet in general can be a valuable asset in helping find support globally. We cannot go one day or even one hour without running into some form of social media or something that deals with the internet. We are millennials and know the internet better than anyone before us. So why not take advantage of our signature attribute. Societies that have been under authoritarian rule need to use this invaluable commodity.
In cases where the government has a strong grip over the community thus preventing access to the web results in hindrance of power. Social Media can be the friend that enacts change or brings attention to the problem that brings about change from an outside source. Social Media is a huge resource that some governments have realized bring power, thus restricting a community from access to it is a step closer to solidifying their rule. Situations where this is the case makes the road to resistance harder and it is vital for a community to gain access to use this huge resource. There are a couple of places that had to deal with this type of oppression. Places such as china, Egypt, and in more extreme cases North Korea. In a more recent example http://www.csmonitor.com/Technology/, discusses a Taiwan Student protest in which the younger generation stuck to the internet to express their dissatisfaction with recent government choices. Such as a controversial trading act partnered with China. The Taiwanese people felt going to the internet to protest was the best option due to fears that the Taiwanese government would put a restriction like the one China imposed on its civilians. The government instantaneously feeling pressure with the people came to terms with the people before things took a turn for the worst.
3. Find a significant place to protest
Going to an historic monument or location can help grab the attention needed for change. Think about an important place in your respective residence, imagine having a protest there. Would there be in immediate reaction or it would go by calmly with no opposition? Protest at such locations attract attention, especially if it is aiming at the government. The government cannot resist or overlook this because with the protest disruption is a counterpart. Disruption in a society is not what the government wants and an immediate response soon follows.
A clear example of this can be seen in Ukraine’s revolt, also known as the orange revolution. Where they occupied Maidan, which is a huge center of town. Many cannot get into the city or main areas without passing the Independence square in Maidan. Ukraine’s revolution came about because of a corrupt president wrongfully being elected into office. As soon as he was put in office he immediately began oppressing the people of Ukraine. So the people responded by taking over Independence square demanding change and not leaving until change happened. The government responded immediately by sending the army to help relieve the tension doing anything to prevent the protest. By anything as far as brutally beating the rioters and eventually using deadly force to restrain them. Maidan turned into a battleground. But the people were fed up and blew off any attempt of people trying to take back over the square. The takeover took some time to happen as it took almost a year to accomplish the goals wanted. But nonetheless with constant persistence and much support from the community. The corrupt president resigned office and left the country. It was a bloody victory but a victory nonetheless. Now Ukraine enjoys peace and a somewhat democratic society.
4. Having a Martyr
This does not sound like a good way to resist authoritarianism, but it can be the spark that enacts change. Having a martyr can help bring support needed from the community to overthrow authoritarianism because they see what was done is wrong. Often times there is no possible cover up from such events. The government if provoked to this form of action, attack the person usually seen in charge or leading the revolt. There is no hiding or hurting the one person courageous enough to confront authoritarianism, who will have massive amounts of supporters.
An example in the twenty first century involves the authoritarianism force oppressing the black community and people sought for a change. One man was the face for this change sadly being subject to the violent tactics used to prevent a change, a martyr. The very known martyr is none other than Martin Luther King Junior. In the fight for civil rights he was wrongfully shot to death by a man who thought otherwise. Kings ambition to oppose oppression to his people will never be forgotten and is a perfect example of a martyr. In reaction to this atrocious event the people fighting with King became even more motivated. Forming a bond that could not be broken despite the government’s attempt to prevent it. Kings death also help spark for immediate change within society. The government saw the repercussions of the murder of king and put in place laws to stop whatever problems there were. Though there was no immediate change progression was evident.
5. Peaceful means of change
Peaceful protest is usually not the most efficient form of resisting authoritarianism but is effective. As seen throughout history peaceful protest have been used to overthrow authoritarianism countless times. Usually the road is long and hard but with constant persistence change is inevitable. Reacting violently will get thee point across but puts you in the same category as the people you are trying to oust. Peaceful protest has been used for a long.
time. Gandhi used this tactic to overthrow British rule during his time. Despite being beaten and his campaign taking forever he did it. With Gandhi and his people not retaliating to the government oppression, further helped he image he intended to have. Such as by peaceful means you can accomplish what you need. Another point is that if you did retaliate violently then you are no better than the government who have no remorse for their actions. Violence only begets more violence. What the government does is to try to provoke you, to see if you will retaliate so war can be declared in essence. Once the government senses violence they are quick to take things a step further. When this occurs death is soon to follow, in does not fail. Either a main leader or a person supporting the movement. So it is vital to stay calm and stay peaceful.
6. Foster a common association
Citizens finding a common goal for trying to overthrow authoritarianism can significantly improve the strength of a community and help people realize what needs to be done. In finding common ground people will be more easily influenced in helping support the move to fight against authoritarianism. In successful resistance to authoritarianism in any case a common goal was established. When you stand for something it is much easier to input the energy needed to accomplish what it is that is desired.
Anything can help make people come together such as a slogan, common oppressive situations, even age. There are many examples of communities coming together for a common purpose. Japan is a good exemplar of people unifying in past experience to prevent the government from further doing damage or implementing their wants. In the article, https://www.democracynow.org describes the Japanese government attempting to begin starting back up nuclear plants. The people have a major problem with this idea as past experiences are a recurring thought. In 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami hit Japan, resulting in major failure of the Fukishima Daiichi Nuclear plant malfunctioning. Thousands of people had to be evacuated from their homes and many people will suffer from the effects of being exposed to radiation for many years to come. People can no longer go back to their homes and many have lost their jobs. It is apparent why people would have a problem with the government trying to start these plants back up. The main reason people banded together is because they all remember the effects the failure of the plants had on their lives. They have something in common and thus began protesting running off of the emotions from this incident, protesting for nuclear plants to no longer be active. This strength in community and strong unifying experience have helped prevent the nuclear plants from happening.
7. Acknowledge problem
Actually acknowledging the problem of unfair rights from authoritarianism and presenting this awareness can help to start change. Knowing that a change needs to happen is the first step in success of ousting authoritarianism. Also, realizing that your rights as a human are being restricted or neglected are fire starters for support. If one person is feeling this way more than likely they are not the only one. Though this is not a specific way to resist authoritarianism this is one of the first steps needed to take in order to move toward change. In situations where there is a form of authoritarianism most people use excuses to let the government continue their rule. It seems that people just accept their fate and believe that nothing can be done. More often times than not all they do is complain to fellow citizens and do nothing. But when someone finally demands for change and points out the problem things begin to change. The mentality of we can’t turns into we can. Excuses are no longer viable and change is the result.
In Germany one brave soul felt the need to let people know of a problem, Sophie Scholl. During the 1940s the peak of Nazism was everywhere in Germany. Many people did not resist the Nazi regime, with a going with the flow mentality. Sophie saw a problem and believed the Nazi regime was bad. She took control and released a pamphlet bashing the Nazi regime detailing the horrendous acts they did. After release of the pamphlet she was shortly apprehended and executed. What she did accomplish was getting people on her side and making them realize the regime was not doing all they said they were. Leaving out key information or not telling the people the truth. She acknowledged the problem and the people reacted.
8. Legal means of change
Resisting authoritarianism by legal means can be quite difficult because the government already has the upper hand but victory is achievable with persistence. Presenting evidence of oppression and the problems associated with the problem of authoritarianism can help provide support. In tackling the problem of authoritarianism head on in a legal way may take time but with insurmountable evidence and aid from the community victory would be imminent. Combining this tactic and any other form of resistance to authoritarianism may be the best way to have victory. One of the best ways to legally beat authoritarianism is to describe how the government is violating your human rights. As a human no other human should make you feel as if they are restricting what was given to you from the beginning. Such as taking your freedom of speech or your freedom of choice. In many authoritarianism governments one of the first things to be taken away is the freedom of voice, then the freedom of choice. The government limits the amount of choices you have and uses this to their advantage or in worst case scenarios gives you no choice. But with the legal system one of two things will happen. Presenting forth the issue will help change happen or the government is so corrupt that they will expose themselves. After attempting to utilize the legal system and you fail, one of the other nine ways to resist authoritarianism should be used. Using the legal system is a more peaceful way of accomplishing resisting authoritarianisms, like letting the government know this is their last chance before it gets ugly.
9. Find physical place that represents power
In most societies there is usually a place that has historic significance that is controlled by someone that signifies who has the power. That someone is usually the government and overtaking this place can be vital in change. These significant physical places are physical manifestations of power. Taking control of these locations is a huge victory against authoritarianism, who believe they have complete control. It is crazy to think that this is an effective tactic but it gets the job done. Forcing the government to actually listen to what you have to say. It is like stripping someone of their pride and telling them what needs to change.
Egypt went through such a situation in 2011, when they had a problem with the current president Hosni Mubarak who was seen as violent and restricting. A big reason people did not like him was for the fact that he was a convicted felon and still made presidency. Corruption was a big issue for the people. He immediately implemented a law that basically made whatever he wanted happen. With the passing of this law unfair trials were all too common and arrests were made daily. Often times people that were arrested were subject to torture. The people of Egypt began to move forward for change.
They went to the one place they knew they would be heard, Tahrir Square in Cairo. Tahrir Square could be seen as the heart of the government because it is essentially the gateway to the entire city. In the documentary, The Square http://www.imdb.com describes the protest in its entirety. As stated in the documentary The square is surrounded by some of the most important buildings in Cairo - the national museum, the colossal Mogamma administrative building, the former headquarters of the ruling NDP party (which was torched during the uprising by protesters), state TV and several glitzy international hotels. It is evident why the Square was such an important location. The people began a protest at the square refusing to leave until something changed. Over a span of 18 days the square was occupied by thousands of people demanding for the president to resign. After intense protest, Mubarak resigned and much of what the people demanded was implemented.
10. Resist authoritarianism before it becomes a bigger problem
When the government enacts laws that prohibit something from further developing, they are cutting it off before it becomes a problem. A community can use this tactic against the government. Which prevents the government from becoming a formidable foe that will take more effort in defeating. Whereas if they had dealt with it earlier it would not had been as bad. In attempting such a feat, there must be massive momentum in your favor and many numbers. Not many attempts in this solution are seen, because people usually succumb to the power of authoritarianism. It usually takes the central power abusing the people and stressing the community for a reaction to happen. Like blowing a balloon till it is to big then the balloon popping. Much is the same for people to react.
A recent example can be seen in Washington D.C. when anti trump protestors tried to block a checkpoint. The United States is not an authoritarianist society but people felt we were headed in that direction with the new election. Election for the 45th president was near and one candidate was seen as the sure winner. Donald Trump. When the election was over and the least liked candidate won people were outraged. As the future president was headed to swear in he was met with a surprise. There was a checkpoint Trump needed to pass in order to attend the inauguration and people tried preventing him from being in attendance. As can be read in the article by Mirror, http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/, describes the intent of the protestors preventing entry of the future president from entering into the inaugural location. The protestors believed that trump being elected into office would support white supremacy. As can be seen in the present day the protestors were not successful in their attempt but much focus was put on the protest. Major media attention was focused on the event. Even though the attempt to prevent trump from going into office failed, much can be gained from this situation. For one even the small scale attempt to protest resulted in their voices being heard causing a reaction. If the people would have had more numbers I feel they would have been more successful in preventing his inauguration. Bravery almost prevailed in preventing what the community saw as a problem from manifesting itself even more.

Resisting the Man
What is authoritarianism and why is it unacceptable?
Five ways to resist authoritarianism:
Where they occupied Kiev, which is a huge center of town. Many cannot get into the city or main areas without passing the Independence square in the middle of Kiev. Ukraine’s revolution came about because of a corrupt president wrongfully being elected into office. As soon as he was put in office he immediately began oppressing the people of Ukraine. So the people responded by taking over Independence square demanding change and not leaving until change happened. The government responded immediately by sending the army to help relieve the tension.
The government saw the repercussions of the murder of king and put in place laws to stop whatever problems there were
Peaceful protest has been used for a long time.
