Otoplasty (surgery of the ear) was developed in ancient India, in the 5th century BC, by the Sushruta , which he described in the medical compendium, the Sushruta samhita. It is derived from Greek word oto meaning ear.

The appearance of the ear is not something that most people spend a lot of worrying about. When your ears stick out however, it can become a preoccupation and a source of embarrassment. Choosing a haircut, hat or even whether to go swimming becomes a difficult, ear-centric decision. The most common ear “deformity” is prominent ears. When the ears stick out, they are often the target of ridicule and an area of concern for the patient. There are three anatomical changes that cause ear prominence. What is Otoplasty?

Otoplasty is a short, outpatient surgical procedure performed in an ambulatory surgical center that corrects common cosmetic ear deformities. It can correct common congenital ear fold defects like prominent ears, cup ears and Stahl (Spock) ears, as well as acquired deformities due to trauma like cauliflower ears.

What is Otoplasty Recovery?

Recovery takes a week or two. You can expect to be sore the first few days. A large head wrap is needed for the week after surgery to maintain the shape achieved with surgery. A headband is used at night for three months.
