@latchic said: Op I would love to hear about your thoughts on galo trying to save kray and all the details of his and lios psyches, you got some cool words to say and I’d like to hear more
Absolutely. Any time. I love thinking about this stupid movie.
So I forced a bunch of my friends to watch Promare with me and on the one hand the parts where Galo was like "Lio don't kill him!" all of my friends were like NO DO IT PLEASE END HIM which was really funny.
But. But but but. I do think it's super important that Galo refused to kill him.
Okay, so there's several parts to this. To start with I don't think that Kray being Kray was really an important factor in Galo trying to keep him alive. Like, we are WELL past Galo holding any respect for the man, and they did just spend the last like 15 minutes of the movie beating his ass. And yes, Galo absolutely has a lot of emotions to unpack about him, but none of those feelings have anything to do with the decision not to murder him.
So Galo tries to 'defend' Kray twice. The first one is when Kray starts taunting Lio after their robot battle and Lio fucking loses it. He tears himself out of Lio de Galon and Galo shouts out "Wait don't kill him!" And I think there's two reasons for this, at least for this first moment.
One: Galo does not think it's right to kill. That's just a given, he's a fire fighter, his whole job is to keep people alive, and I don't think any amount of anger is going to make him change his mind on that. But more than that, he doesn't think it'd be right to kill someone who 'can't fight back.' Because in that moment, they have no idea Kray still has an ace up his sleeve. He just knows that Lio is angry and not in his right mind.
Which leads me to Two: Galo doesn't want LIO to kill, because Lio thinks it's important not to kill. It's the same reason he stopped Dragon-Lio from destroying the city, and confronted him in Aina's helicopter instead of, I dunno, shooting him in the head with an ice gun. Lio doesn't want to be the monster everyone thinks he is. He doesn't want to be a murderer, no matter how much people deserve it. Lio said over and over again that the burnish would only hurt someone if forced.
And in this moment, Lio is being tormented and brought to the brink, but he's not acting in self defense. He's not doing it to protect anyone. They already won (quote unquote). And I think Galo knew intrinsically that Lio killing Kray would absolutely destroy Lio from the inside.
But the second time Galo saves Kray I think is way more interesting. This is right before the kiss of life scene, when he destroyed the engine and pulled Lio free. Again, his decision not to kill Kray had nothing to do with Kray.
And also, it kind of had everything to do with Kray.
Because Kray almost killed everyone. He truly and sincerely believed that the majority of humanity had to be sacrificed for the greater good. And sure, there was a good dose of megalomania in there, but he genuinely thought the Burnish and anyone he didn't invite on the ship needed to be killed to protect humanity as a whole. And isn't it worth it, to sacrifice the rest of humanity if it means a select few make it?
And Galo looked him in the eyes, said fuck that, and decked him in the jaw.
Because Galo didn't believe him. No amount of justification would make this right. There was no world for Galo in which people had to be killed for the greater good. Galo was going to save every last person on the fucking planet, and was not going to compromise his morals to do it just because Kray didn't think he could.
Kray told him he had to kill in order to save, and Galo said no, I don't even have to kill you. And I won't. And I love that.
I probably shouldn't keep going, because I still have a million and one thoughts about these little guys and this post is getting too long, but if you want to read 93,000 words dissecting Lio Fotia and his trauma I did write this fic about it.
#or if you have specific things you want me to talk about i have so many more thoughts#and headcanons#and fic ideas#promare#also oooooooo you wanna read my fic so bad oooooooo

Promare/Galolio Headcanons
I have Promare on the brain again so...
After losing his connection to the Promare, Lio gets cold all the time. Fortunately for him, Galo is a walking furnace!
They both have motorcycles of their own, and frequently go riding (and racing) together.
Although Lio assists with Burning Rescue, it's not how he spends most of his time. A lot of people need help getting back on their feet after the city was partially destroyed. Thanks to his experience as the Burnish leader, Lio becomes a community organizer, setting up shelters, food pantries, and much more.
Galo picks up a variety of hobbies and projects to keep him busy now that there aren't as many fires to fight. He fosters dogs, visits schools, and gets certified for mountain and coastal rescue missions. He tried to get a pilot's license, but failed the course 3 times already. "No Galo, I won't let you do just one barrel roll!"
Lio forgets that he isn't fireproof anymore, so he often burns himself on the job or while cooking.
Speaking of cooking, neither one of them can do it! Galo lives off of protein shakes and pizza, while Lio's sense of taste and smell were damaged by smoke. Asking him to season something is always going to end in disaster. So they end up eating out quite a bit!
Lio thought that they had been dating ever since the kiss CPR. But Galo thought they were just best friends. Because it's totally normal for best friends to live in the same apartment and kiss and shower together and - Wait a minute!
Once they figure it out, these two are a nightmare to be around. Constant PDA and flirting! They are also absolute freaks in the bedroom. Anything and everything is on the table and they have no shame bringing it up. Everyone is happy that they found each other, but please, PLEASE stop giving details!
Research continues into the Promare dimension. Ellis is the lead researcher and she often asks Lio for help due to his connection. Eventually, they're able to establish a way to communicate across the dimensions! There are no more Burnish, but the little fire sprites can sometimes manifest under the right conditions.
#promare#galolio#galo thymos#lio fotia#headcanons#this was fun!#I wish we had more about this world#I want to see the before and after!

i do think galo is just Masc and he would be masc whatever situation he was living in, i don’t think he was forcing himself to be masc when he’d rather be fem or something personally, he’s very much a masc4fem guy, but i think just due to the world he lived in galo LIKELY felt somewhat pressured within his presentation and he’s forced to use being typically read as gender conforming to keep himself safe and closeted (not deeply closeted imo just, low level not sharing it and not wanting to experience bullshit). but galos masculinity the context of his relationship w lio, galo’s gayness, it’s so drenched in his sexuality. hypermasculinity was i think a good word choice from that replier bcuz it evokes the ‘it’s so into masculinity it starts reading as Really gay’. and ofc his character as my bf said the other day is ‘masc trans guy to a T’
aina on the other hand i think requires a lot more playing within the scraps of narrative and ultimately just headcanons to choose what u want her deal to be bcuz her femininity doesn’t necessarily exist the same way w the same reasons in the narrative that galos masculinity does. trigger misogyny so in The Movie her character doesn’t rly exist much outside of what she represents to galo (tho ofc she has a lot going on u can pick up anyway).. when the implication is she doesn’t feel super psyched to be stuck in a situation like the lake scene w him either… personally i do find that a really interesting parallel could’ve made her attracted to women and closeted or not super aware of it like galo is attracted to men- giving her something to strongly relate to galo about feeling pressured to conform to this typical action movie romance (tho they don’t know that cuz they’re Characters in a Narrative) whether either of them recognize it or not. it wouldn’t have taken much to throw that in somewhere and recontextualize her a little. and then of course she is a trans woman as galo is a trans man. i don’t necessarily think she reads as hyper feminine she just seems like she’s meant by trigger to be A Woman, though on some level her being a relatively feminine woman probably was a thought w her bcuz the only character we see galo attracted to in the canon of the movie is lio a more feminine man so my instinct was that galo’s more into gender nonconformity..
anyway my tldr here is that when trigger paralleled aina w galo and then galo and lio r gay guys there’s some rly obvious tracks to take with her too
#this isn’t to say gnc galo art or headcanons r Wrong or something#just to me as a masc bi guy i relate strongly to his presentation as it exists now#and him feeling happy the way he is already#promare

Promare has recently consumed my life, so have some Promare character headcanons.
I think that Galo and Lio were actually born in the same year, with Lio only being a couple months older. They're both in their early twenties. Like, very early twenties. Just barely out of high school kind of early.
Galo and Lio are both orphans. Lio has been on the run since his Burnish awakening as a kid. He doesn't remember it very well, but he does remember his parents were wealthy, and impressed upon him the importance of appearances and propriety. He knows his parents died, but he doesn't remember the details of it. Since Lio went off the grid so young, he never got much in the way of a formal education. Lio is sharply intelligent, but he always draws a blank at school-related knowledge like math, history, science, etc. That sort of stuff is actually pretty boring to him. Lio does like to read, though, and has a surprisingly expansive vocabulary given his lack of a formal education.
Galo was raised in the foster system. He doesn't know what happened to his parents, but he never really cared to figure out. It was never something that really mattered to him. He was happy enough with his various foster families, and was lucky enough to have pretty good foster families all things considered. But all this does mean that Galo never really had much in the way of family. Galo also has a couple of learning disabilities, like ADHD and dyslexia, which made school more than a bit of a nightmare for him. He was held back a year in school before inevitably dropping out. Not too long after that, he entered into the firefighting academy, where Kray promptly placed him in Burning Rescue, despite having next to no former experience and very little training. By the time we see him in the movie, he's been working with Burning Rescue for a little under a year. He's the youngest member of Burning Rescue, with Lucia being only a year older than him, and Aina being two years older than him.
Galo and Lio are both hopeless in all areas of pop culture knowledge.
Lio is pansexual while Galo is gay.
Aina and Heris lost their parents when they were in their teens. Heris is about 7 years older than Aina, so when their parents passed away while Aina was still in high school, Heris stepped up to take care of her. They're the two most important people in the world to each other, as well as the only family they have left, so they cling to each other like no one else. Heris especially clings to Aina more than Aina clings to Heris. Aina was able to find family in Burning Rescue while Aina is all that Heris has left, and she would happily watch the world burn if it meant that she could still have Aina at the end of it all. There is a bit of a codependency issue between the two of them, an issue that Aina is slowly but surely growing out of, due to finding love and support in the other Burning Rescue members.
Aina was definitely a troubled, rebellious teenager. She listens to grunge and rock music and got into plenty of fistfights during her time in school. You cannot tell me this girl didn't have a punk phase in highschool. She gives Galo shit for not knowing when to hold his tongue, but she has just as much of a problem with talking back to authority figures if she thinks something is wrong.
Lucia has experience in coding and has a degree in engineering.
Remi is definitely a vegan. He's also half Malaysian, as well as trilingual. Galo calls him "blind" to tease him for how bad his vision is without his glasses.
Varys grew up in a big family with a small army of younger siblings that he helped his parents take care of. He's a seasoned caretaker, and by far the best babysitter. He's also an amazing cook.
Lio loves spicy food and could probably bite into a ghost pepper without breaking a sweat, while Galo has an almost pitiably weak heat tolerance and can barely stand too much pepper in his eggs.
Meis and Gueira are in their early thirties. They met up with Lio a couple years before the events of the movie, and Meis and Gueira have been with each other for basically their whole lives.

Lio debates putting away the hairdryer and acting like he isn’t having a crisis, but he quickly realizes how pointless that’d be once Galo sees the state of his hair, so he stays quiet and accepts his fate of being found. It isn’t long before a familiar head of blue hair peeks into the doorway with a wide grin. “There you are! I thought you were lost in another book—what are you doing, Lio?”
He shakes the hairdryer, “Wishing I could set this thing on fire.”

Hello there!! Can I request some headcanons / mini-scenarios for: Dan Heng, March, Welt, Himeko, Yanqing and Jing Yuan; with a normally soft-spoken Reader who has a wide vocal range (from contralto to hitting those high notes) and occasionally does song covers? Doesn't matter the genre, so long as Reader likes it.
So they might hear Reader singing something like a lullaby or a traditional Xianzhou song one day, to something that's still soft and sweet like a mainstream pop song on another day; to belting out something like "Kakusei" or "NEXUS" from the Promare OST. :D
★ A/N: I understood the request, I just hope I wrote it in a way you wanted! People with such a large vocal range are so talented istg, they gotta teach me. (I say as if I have ANY confidence to sing anyways)
☆ Genre/Trope: Platonic
★ Format: Bullet Pointed Head Cannons (And small scenario at the end :>)
☆ Warnings: None
★ Extra: Reader is a Nameless // Readers age is undisclosed so imagine them at whatever age you wish // Reader can play instruments! // Characters might be OOC I feel // Proof Read but I did it when it was 4am lmao
When you sing more soft songs, Dan Heng tends to enjoy listening. It helps him feel more relax and sometimes rids his mind of nightmares.
He's more used to hearing that kind of voice from you. So when one day, he walks in on you singing a song that's the exact opposite of how you usually sing, he's a bit surprised.
He never doubted you could have a big vocal range, however hearing you sing a song that's different to how he normally hears you sing is what surprised him.
He still enjoys listening, but more so when you sing in a softer voice, don't get him wrong. He still enjoys your singing voice and will support you. But he isn't one for a more loud song.
"[Name]...if you're going to sing more...on the loud side, could I request you do it else where?" Dan Heng sighs softly, being awoken up once again due to you. Despite his words hinting at annoyance, his facial expression was soft and kind. A soft sorry came from your voice as you quickly turned off the music you were using, switching to a more softer song. An old Xianzhou lullaby. "Here, I'll make it up to you. Sit on the couch and I'll sing a softer song" You smiled, Dan Heng chuckled as he obliged. He can't deny that your more softer voice doesn't help him fall asleep. He silently hums along to your voice, and in a sleepy voice he speaks to you before drifting to bed. "If you enjoy music like that so much, we can pay a visit to Serval okay?"
March 7th LOVES your singing voice. She would sing along to whatever song you were singing. She praises you every time she hears you and likely took photos of you singing.
She so supports you if you ever make a YouTube (StarTube?) account and posted covers, literally your number 1 fan.
When you post a cover of a song, she's always the first one to like, comment and listen!
When you post a cover of a song that's VERY different. (Let's say, Usseewa) and you hit ALL those high notes and, everything omg. She was surprised but immediately hyped you up.
She doesn't mind if you sing songs like that at all, your singing is amazing. Like I said, number 1 fan...she doesn't hid it either.
"I love you [Name]!" "Uh, the one with the blue camera and pink hair?" "OH. MY GOD. [NAME] YOU NOTICED ME, YOU NOTICED ME. I.LOVE.YOU" Serval laughed out loud seeing Marchs outburst, as if you two don't live with each other. You could only look away with a small smile, seeing March jump up and down and shaking whoever was beside her. Much to Welts "delight"
Welts very impressed with your vocal range. But he's also worried, he knows that if you were able too have a large vocal range, you likely know how to manage it.
Still, anytime he hears you singing songs like NEXUS or Kakusei he can't help but slide over a bottle of water for your throat.
If you ever join a concert with Serval then he IS buying tickets, though not everyone may go (Dan Heng) he and the rest of the Express will.
He also tends to buy any merch you may come out with if there is any. (Mainly for March but he does keep one or two for himself to support you)
He doesn't really have a preference when it comes too what songs you sing, just as long as your happy and it isn't really disturbing anyone.
If you ever start a StarTube channel, he might animate a few of your covers! Under a pen name though, he's not embarrassed, but I think he'd like it if you thought it was a different fan and not just him who's already liked your singing from the start. (If that makes sense)
"WELT! Weltweltwelt" You ran up to him, quickly showing him an animation someone did of one of your new songs. "ArahatosNumber1Fan animated one of my covers again" You said excitedly, bringing the phone screen back to your view as you scrolled through the comments. Many complimenting the animation but many also asking who sang the cover to which they were directed to your account. "This the guy that you said was helping boost your channel subs?" You nod happily, tapping your chin you thought for a bit. "Do you think they'd still animate my covers even if I sing a different genre? I want to go with something softer this time instead of a louder peice" "I'm sure they'll animate any song you wish to sing" He chuckles. And sure enough, a week after you posted a cover of Lost Umbrella, ArahatosNumber1Fan posted an animation to go along with it.
Himeko compliments you a lot for your vocal range. In fact, she got you a karaoke machine for your birthday! Of course, though. She doesn't let you use it during night time. She doesn't want to wake up because you decided to start singing Churira Churira Dadada at 3 in the morning.
I do think she prefers you to sing outside the train. While she does enjoying your singing and she has no problem if you were to sing in the train. However she also understands it may disturb many people so she does ask for you to sing in an area where you aren't disturbing anyone.
I feel like she also asks you to teach her how to sing or have a wider vocal range. She enjoys singing herself and would love to join in when you're out singing to keep you company!
Perhaps you two can make money by singing on the streets :> (Only if you're okay with it though!)
You strummed you guitar as the two of you reached the last note, Himeko took a small bow and looked up at the audience that had gathered around. All of them clapping and complimenting your voice. She laughed softly and gently packed up your things so the two of you could get going, checking to see if you were uncomfortable with the attention before she directs you back to the train. As you two entered, Himeko was quick to sit and count the amount of credits that were left in your guitar case, looking up to you she said with a smile. "A success, well done. They loved you" "It wasn't just me singing..." "Perhaps but...I'd say they have their favourites"
When Yanqing overhears you singing Xianzhou lullabys, he's quick to shower you with compliments. Your voice is so soothing! He could listen it for so long and it's effective too. You had to usher him out as he could wake the kids you just put to bed.
When he hears you singing a song like (man I'm running out of songs I know/hj) Noels Lament. He's impressed, how can you sing a song so softly and quietly and then sing something like this which needs a stronger voice??
He might skip a few of his training to find you and see what song you're singing, he makes it a guessing game! Will you be singing something so sweet and kind? Or something that might will make head turn??
"...Yanqing?" "Ha! I guessed right this time" "...Guessed...right?" Ah, you weren't meant to know the guessing game he had in his own head, quickly, he shuffled away. Scratching the back of his head. "Of where you were!" "I always walk in this area" "...I meant...what outfit you'd be wearing?" "I usually wear similar clothes?" ...Yeah, he's running off quickly, hopefully Jing Yuan won't scold him for skipping his training again right? Surely the general can understand he just has to see if his guess was right or not.
Surprisingly (or not surprisingly) Jing Yuan enjoys when you sing your heart out with songs like Candy Store or Mount Rageous. That's the type of sing he first heard you sing when he tried to find Yanqing when he skipped yet another training sessions.
Usually he would just sleep till Yanqing returned or just go on with his day if he never did. In either case, now he joins Yanqing to see what song you're singing before returning back to train.
When he hears you singing a less upbeat song like Sweet Dreams. He's slightly surprised but listens intently, it's different to what he often hears you sing but he enjoys it none the less, he sees your happy so he's fine.
He might even request to hear certain songs just to see how well you voice range can handle it. From the loudest song that could break glass, to a soothing song that can put even the mara struck to bed. And if you successfully sing them all, he congratulates you.
Overall, he's impressed as well as many others, likely talks to you and how well you sing to his friends.
You panted a bit as you finished a particularly long high note, Jing Yuan chuckles and slides over a cup of water which you accept quickly. Taking a drink to sooth your throat. "You voice really can do wonders, I'm more then impressed" He speaks, you nodded in response as he then offers a small treat for agreeing to sing a song for him. A song that made you go from high to low, soft to loud and all in all, tested how wide your voice range can be in a singular song. "I must apologies, I just wished to see how far your voice can go. I should've considered how tired your throat must be from singing that particular song" "No worries, it was fun to read and practice that song. I'm a bit surprised you know it though" "Oh? Are you now?" "Yeah...I mean...the song was released like a month ago and you're kinda a grandp-" "Alright I get it" He chuckled lightly, gently flicking your forehead.
I'm so smart writing Yanqings and JY sleep deprived right?/j Yeah uh they might be OOC, hopefully not thoughejfpgt.

Not sorry for putting Promare on your dash in 2025 anyway I realized that Lio is really a complete blank slate in terms of backstory, which is understandable for the movie since honestly it would have felt kind of awkward and clunky trying to fit it in somewhere, but even the prequel short was only about his past with Mad Burnish. What came before that? Where did he come from?
As such I've decided to make up a past for him. Headcanon that he awakened to being Burnish as a child and his parents hid him away to keep anything from happening to him before they died or perhaps were arrested for housing a Burnish or something like that. It was a lonely and suffocating childhood and Lio has a lot of complicated feelings about his parents having been both afraid for and of him.

Dungeon Meshi/Delicious in Dungeon Review
I first heard of Dungeon Meshi a bit before it started airing; my Twitter mutuals who had read the manga were very excited that not only was it being adapted, but it was being adapted by fan-favorite Studio Trigger, my personal favorite modern anime studio. Famous for their hyperactive Looney Tunes-esque visuals, thanks in large part due to the influence of founder and Gainax alumni Hiroyuki Imaishi, Studio Trigger's most famous works include Kill la Kill, Little Witch Academia, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and the film Promare. Finding out that Trigger was producing the series immediately put it on my to-watch list. But there were two other things that made it jump to the top of the list that the fandom had been discussing.

Fairly soon after the series started airing, I started seeing fellow yuri fans fangirling over the dynamic of Marcille the elf and Falin the human. There was so much fanfare over Farcille that I incorrectly assumed it was a canon pairing- on this front and this front alone I was sorely disappointed. Regardless, I did enjoy the dynamic between the two, despite my disappointment at the lack of canon yuri. However, Falin and Marcille ended up fairly low on the list of things that kept me watching the series, which turned out to be excellent beyond my expectations. One other headcanon-turned-fanon that also tricked me was that the fandom had been calling Laios, the protagonist, autistic for a while, and as an autistic person that's desperate for actual good autism representation, THAT'S what made me finally decide to watch it. As it turns out, it was also just fanon, which was a bit disappointing considering that Laios's autism-coding is so strong that it had me 50% convinced, against all odds, that it was canon. This scene in particular half of me truly believe that it was intentional.
However, it was unintentional, as is all good "autism representation." But can you blame me? He even has the same dead-inside stare that I do because of my autism!
Regardless, Dungeon Meshi has so much more to offer than simple representation. The plot, considering that it's a medieval Europe-based fantasy, something I generally find cliche, is very unique and keeps you guessing from one episode to the next. I definitely didn't start watching the series because the plot sounded good- the eating monsters part sounded gimmicky, but in practice it's excellent and really adds to the world's lore. The series is a bit of a bait-and-switch in that those who may have been lured in by the basic premise end up with more than they bargained for in terms of dark themes. Fans of the 2003 adaptation of Fullmetal Alchemist will appreciate the darker tone the series acquires mixed with themes of familial bonds and friendship. Both series have strong parallels to Frankenstein with their attempted resurrection plotlines, not to give too much away.
The chemistry of the main cast is fantastic. The way the colorful characters play off of each other, especially off of Laios's combination of monster infodumping and constant social faux pas, is consistently entertaining. Senshi is an interesting departure from the hot-headed dwarves of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, he has no interest in mining, and certainly no interest in "delving too deep" or "too greedily" into the dungeon the way the ill-fated dwarves of Moria did to their mine. Senshi is thoughtful in all his actions, always sure to take only the supplies he and the others need for food, nothing more, so as to not disrupt the dungeon's delicate ecosystem. That doesn't mean he's always rational, as we see from him attempting to ride the kelpie, but nonetheless it makes him the most mature and considerate of the party. Kui has confirmed that Laios wasn't written to be autistic, although she was sure to say she doesn't mind him being seen that way, but as an autistic person I love how each individual cast member has a unique reaction to his constant infodumping and social woes. Kabru is the most interesting in this regard, in that he sees Laios's encyclopedic knowledge of monsters as the strength that it is, not a flaw.
The worldbuilding in Dungeon Meshi is as rich as a fantasy series can have, with careful consideration from author Ryoko Kui about the lore of each individual monster, ingredient, and dish. I'm not one to care too deeply about lore, but Dungeon Meshi does it in such a clever, unique, and often funny way that I love to hear Laios's fun facts about monsters, or the specific properties of a herb used in one of Senshi's dishes.
Visually, all I can say is that Trigger was the perfect choice to adapt the series. While far from as over-the-top as Kill la Kill, fans of Trigger's innovative "sugar rush" animation style won't be disappointed. It's a perfect sprinkling of Trigger's famous stylization, just enough to properly adapt the manga's tone while making it still recognizably a Trigger anime.
The openings are very enjoyable, and while I've heard complaints about the second one, I love it. I've gotten it stuck in my head more times than I can remember, it's extremely catchy. The OST is perfect for the series and never distracts from the on-screen action.
All in all, I give the series a strong 9/10 rating. Highly recommended to all. I enjoyed the first 16 episodes so much that I immediately started buying the manga in physical form before I even finished the anime. I'm currently on volume 6, waiting for 7 to come in the mail. When I read the manga in full, I'll give it a full review as well.

Hyper specific promare headcanons? 👀
Gueira used to be the sort of punk who stole the younger kids’ lunch money in elementary and middle school until some tiny little first grader finally fought back and managed to break his leg.
Years later he figures out that was Galo Thymos age six and decides to take him out for drinks.
Gueira went burnish at age 15 after his gang got into a knife fight with another gang in an alley and he got stabbed. Immediately all his friends ditched him to be grabbed by the cops, so he ran home, only for his mom to kick him out as soon as she saw he was burnish.
I also have this headcanon he was an angry burnout with a much younger little brother who everyone loved. His family sort of gave up on Gueira and were very invested in getting the brother into college since he was very smart and sweet. Gueira always wonders how he turned out but has never gotten the courage to go check.
(Ask for more and I’ll do another character)

“PROMARE” Theory -Burnout Burnish: The strange case of Governor Kray Foresight.

Originally from my Wordpress site: DISCLAIMER: I would like to establish that nobody has to agree with or even like my theories, especially since this particular post is on a Canon character. These are purely my headcanons and my thoughts on this character, I am not about to force these ideas/headcanons onto anyone.
It’s no secret that Studio Trigger’s 2019 animated movie ‘Promare’ is a fun, emotional ride from start to finish, and is more than likely to leave you with both a headache and a lot of questions, for it’s also no secret that this fiery fun fest is filled with more plot holes than a fine Swiss cheese. But some – including myself – would argue that this presents an opportunity to theorise and fill in the gaps for ourselves.
So that’s what I’m going to do.
Throughout the film, we see various characters succumbing and becoming hosts to the vibrant, alien fire life forms known as the Promare and as a result, this group of people go on to become known as the Burnish. The biggest montage of this occurrence happens right at the very beginning of the film, as the audience is introduced to the basic premise of the story. Throughout this bright, colourful, yet pretty grim series of shots, the majority of the newly awakened Burnish all appear to manifest their new powers in very much the same way, it’s almost worth calling it a pattern.
The film shows us that a Burnish’s awakening is often intense, sudden, and destructive to the people and property that are unlucky enough to get into its way. The Promare manifesting in this manner is undoubtedly a big part of what caused the Great World Blaze to be as devastating as it was, with half of the human population being reportedly wiped out. However, after I’d watched the film through a few times, I started to realise that most of the people who became Burnish throughout the story follow this pattern. The pattern being that the colourful fire would come bursting out from either their eyes or mouth, sometimes both; but most of these awakenings are generally centred around the facial area, as seen below.
The only, tiny anomaly to this strange pattern appears to be poor Thyma – who in “Galo Hen/Side: Galo” is seen to have Burnish flames rise up from directly beneath her while she’s lying on the ground. However, this first burst of flame does still appear to have manifested in her upper body, and upon closer inspection; her eyes are blank and her mouth is open. I would count her as a slight oddity, and perhaps that this is all owing to the fact that she was on the ground when the Promare manifested, but in the grand scheme of things, her awakening doesn’t stand out terribly alongside every other Burnish in the film.

As for what causes the Promare to manifest in these specific areas the most – I’m honestly not sure – my best guess is that it’s a metaphor for their minds and possibly also their wills merging together with their hosts; as human and Promare. Professor Deus Prometh is heard to claim that the Promare sync with the humans it resonates with, so perhaps the brain is where this resonance happens the most. Lastly, it’s worth noting that Lio himself says that the Burnish can clearly hear the Promare, as they urge their human hosts to let them burn, the Promare are in their heads. So with all things considered, the fire life forms manifesting in this way makes sense.
However, like most things in the world, there’s always an exception, and that exception just might take the form of one character.
That being the villain of the film: Kray Foresight.
Kray’s awakening is drastically different from any other we see. Not only is his first ‘spasm’ – as he so delicately describes it – concentrated into his arm rather than his eyes or mouth, but the resulting blaze also amputates that arm completely, burning it away to nothing but ashes.

So what happened here?
My best guess is that – canonically at least – this is all metaphorical; simply put, Kray’s bitter resistance to the Promare messed up his own awakening. Most of the Burnish we see in the film are proud of the fact that they are Burnish in defiance of the oppression they face. This rings particularly and especially true for Lio and the rest of Mad Burnish, but Kray very obviously doesn’t share that sentiment. His disdain towards the Burnish has lead to him shunning this part of himself, which is most likely why his awakening was depicted in such a way. There’s also the fact that he’s the antagonist, and this radically different awakening was most likely done to portray that fact. But I like overthinking things, and I quite like the idea that this is beyond just being metaphorical, and that there’s something seriously, scarily wrong with the way Kray synced up with his Promare. To the point that I’d argue that they didn’t actually sync up at all.
I’d go further than just saying that Kray’s Burnish awakening got off to a rocky start, I would say that he never received the immunity to the Promare’s power in the first place. The protection that the rest of the Burnish obviously have against the heat of their flames is very much absent here, and his big reveal towards the end of the film just solidifies the theory – to me – that his flames actually hurt him as a result of this imperfect awakening. Actively using his flames cause him pain as a result of his resistance to becoming a host for the fire life forms, which would no doubt result in strengthening his hatred of the Burnish and of the Promare. Lets dive in.
-
I’ll start with the most obvious point; Kray wants and perhaps needs to keep his Promare subdued to the best of his ability, not just because he’s the Governor actively campaigning against the Burnish, but also possibly because slipping up has a painful price tag attached to it. Thanks to the technology he has at his disposal however, he has been able to keep it under wraps.
There are a few scenes in the film which suggest that his uniform is infused with freezing tech of some kind; maybe even the same kind used in the anti-burnish cuffs. Of course, there’s the scene atop the Foresight Foundation building where Lio’s destruction of Promepolis almost leads to Kray using his powers, but thanks to Galo, there ends up being no need for it. The scene ends without there being a Burnish reveal on Kray’s part, but not before we’re treated to a tiny wisp of steam rising up from his palm. Besides that, there’s the more obvious and yet somehow simultaneously more inconspicuous scene where his flames – now well and truly free – have to blast through what’s quite clearly a coating of ice to get to their target. It really puts me in mind of – again – the anti-Burnish handcuffs, as well as the weapons used by both Burning Rescue and Freeze Force. This kind of icy shield would keep his Promare locked in and deactivated, thus decreasing the risk of injury.

This either implies that Kray wilfully deactivated the cooling tech in his uniform because he knew it was Crunch Time, or his Promare simply burnt through the safety features he’d installed. I prefer to go with the latter option, just… Because it’s kind of scary to think about.
Towards the end of the film – where we see the most of Kray wielding his Burnish powers – he appears to prefer the use of his prosthetic arm throughout his fight with Lio and Galo. This could just be because he’s a lefty and he never truly got used to losing his dominant arm, but the fact that the majority of his attacks all come from his prosthetic arm, does point towards the theory that his flames cause him discomfort. Sending the flames down through this prosthetic limb would probably divert some of the pain, and judging by the way the arm is seen to warp and swell up in size – more so than the swelling in the rest of his body – tells me that this is where he’s concentrating most of his Burnish power in an attempt to keep his body safe. Though, considering what happened to the rest of his body anyway, it looks to me as if his efforts are mostly in vain; more on that later.

However, there is an instance of him using his organic arm for his powers – while his prosthetic is busy treating Lio like a squeaky toy. The flames from his organic arm are actually the ones seen blasting through the freezing tech in his uniform, pictured further above. Once burnt through that protective, cold layer though, he visibly strains and almost flinches before sending his flames to attack Galo for a second time, like he’s bracing himself for the pain, and this is the only part of the film where we see him using his Burnish powers with his remaining arm.
Even before his Burnish reveal, it’s clear that his body is slowly gearing up to let it all out, the choice of sound design used for Kray straining against his Promare after Heris overloads the Prometech engine is absolutely terrifying and uncomfortable to listen to. But the situation is dire, and with Starship Parnassus’ engine destroyed, Kray might not even be in a clear enough state of mind to fully process the fact that it’s going to hurt. The fact that it takes him this long to consider letting loose and using what is clearly his last resort to get what he wants, just puts across how desperate a situation has to be before he even entertains the idea of using his Promare. The same can be said with how he reacted to Lio’s rampage on Promepolis, he was ready to resort to using his own powers then, only after all of the anti-Burnish technology on the outside of the Foresight Foundation building had failed to stop the fiery dragon.

At the risk of sounding like I’m siding with him – I can’t really blame him for going this far to suppress it all, if using his Promare is going to do… This to him.
I’ve made the argument before about how Lio’s “Kakusei” form and whatever happened to Kray differ in a few ways. Lio’s overall physique stays the same while he’s laying waste to Promepolis – despite the drastic change in colours and the ‘horns’ he grows. To me it looks as if he’s merely adopted the appearance of his Mad Burnish mech in an attempt to make himself look more threatening, though he uses his great, flaming dragon to deal out most of the destruction. Kray meanwhile looks as if he’s properly going through it, just to allow his Promare to burn, his skin takes on a strange, pink hue almost like that of a first degree burn, and the less said about those fangs he sprouts, the better. (Though Kakusei Lio also grew his own set of chompers.)
The dark circles around Kray’s eyes also don’t sit right with me – while they’re almost definitely just there as a design choice to make him look more threatening and more unhinged – I can’t help but think back to the fact that the Promare often manifests itself in humans by rocketing out of their eyes and mouths. If we are to assume that this is the first time Kray has properly used his flames since his initial awakening, it could be that – out of a desperation to burn after being denied that for so long – his Promare once again attempted to sync up with him properly, to perhaps start anew. But of course, it’s too little too late, as Kray’s pent up flames ultimately do their host more harm than good; blistering his flesh, singeing the skin around his eyes and causing his whole body to swell up to the point where his epaulettes buckle and the metal insignia on his left breast splits apart. Whether his constant suppression of his own Promare has lead to the fire corrupting in some way or not, is a topic I’m hoping to touch on in a little more detail in the near future; because a few things could theoretically happen when you keep fire simmering away without release for a long period of time, and none of them bode well for Kray.

And I could understand such over the top measures on Kray’s part; like the freezing tech in his uniform, if his Promare were completely out of control, or corrupted in some way. Lio, Gueira, Meis and the rest of the Burnish in the film all appear to have a degree of control over when and where they use their flames. The Promare want to burn hotter and brighter, the Burnish hear them and as a result they fulfil their wishes, but – far from simply spewing out fire all of the time – the Burnish decide when and where to use their flames, often calling upon them to aid them in battle. After seeing the film through multiple times and watching how most of the Burnish use their powers, I certainly wouldn’t call them “controlled by the Promare” as Kray describes it. There’s an understanding between a Burnish and their flames, there is – certainly in Lio’s case – a trust and almost a love, but if Kray’s awakening was so botched, it’s possible that he may not be able to hear the Promare as well as the rest of the Burnish, and therefore he might not actually know how to get it to stop.
From his big reveal right up until Lio and Galo go off to save the world (with love!) he’s burning constantly. His hair is ablaze, his prosthetic is repeatedly warped into various shapes and sizes with the heat of the flames, it’s around his eyes, it’s there simmering away beneath his skin, still resolutely kept cooped up by the remaining cooling tech in his uniform. The uniform that – despite the various scraps and fights he gets himself into – stays stubbornly and completely in tact throughout all of his time on screen, in tact and doggedly doing its job of keeping those devastating flames at bay, even when its wearer is actively using them. The Burnish themselves may not be controlled by the Promare – but to an extent – Kray just might be. It’s only after he’s brought back to reality with a bang that it finally stops, and when it does stop, the disgraced Governor is incredibly subdued. Once the Promare leave, we see a very, very different character to the one we’ve seen throughout the film, even his faux charm and charisma as the beloved authority figure is gone, everything about him in those final scenes is muted and dulled.
I will say that isn’t just him, the very last scenes of the film use a slightly less saturated colour palette for everyone, but Kray takes looking pitiful to a whole other level. Now a far cry from the bright, in your face colours he had just minutes before, at the very end of the film, he looks nothing short of drained. If you’ve ever seen the gorgeously animated ‘Firebird’ short from Disney’s ‘Fantasia’ you’ll probably know where I’m going with this, the animation there puts me in mind of what we’re seeing here; the man truly does look like he’s about to be swept away, carried off on the wind like ash. He’s burnt out, a Burnout Burnish who refused to let his flames burn – so they burnt him up instead – and whether there are other Burnish in the world who took resisting their powers to the same extremes as he did, I doubt we’ll ever know. Though there does certainly seem to be a link between a person’s mindset and how well they’re able to control their flames, and yes – Thyma could certainly be a candidate for this.

On a final note; as I write, I’m thinking back to something Professor Deus Prometh was quoted as saying right at the start of the film: “The oppression of the Burnish may lead to concurrent blazes worldwide.”
In other words, the longer you keep it down, the longer you resist, the longer the destruction will continue and the bigger and more serious the consequences will be. This is most likely in reference to the magma at the centre of the Earth slowly growing hotter in response to the oppression of the Burnish, but it can absolutely be applied to Kray’s Burnish awakening too. Perhaps if he had listened to the late Professor, things may have turned out a little better for him, he still would have become a burnish, yes, but his flames would’ve been untainted, perhaps he’d still have his arm, and perhaps he wouldn’t have come as totally undone as he did at the end of the film.
But, even with Trigger’s messy timeline, it’s safe to assume that Kray was a child when the Great World Blaze first swept across the earth, and when half of the population was wiped out. And as uncomfortable as this may be to acknowledge, it’s quite hard for me to imagine someone who witnessed that level of destruction at such a young age, being particularly happy about then being advised against resisting should they ever feel a Burnish spasm. That they should just give in to it, let it sync, let themselves become one with the Promare.
Let it burn.
#Promare#Kray Foresight#repost woop#I endgamed my wordpress bc it was costing me money but I do still love this theory#I may or may not have thought up an entire universe/backstory for kray pre-film & what promepolis was like way back when since writing this#but that's another story for another time idk#people hate this guy so I'm inclined to scream @ my twitter friends about it and have done with it!#enjoy and godspeed
