Prologue: Feathering Hope in a Burning Field

Part 1: Forgetting Something Important

A dull noise. That’s all that rang in Subaru’s head. It felt like TV static, or the mindless noise of a washing machine. Something forgetful over the loudness of daily life. The schedule of waking up, going to school, getting home, doing chores, having dinner and going to sleep had been monotonous for a while. Doing that for so long can get so lackluster after a while. You can only wish for something shiny and new to appear. And after so long, his wish came true.

An acceptance letter to the Ultimate Course at Yumenosaki academy. A prestigious school, known for guaranteed success. Finally, a change in his life. He would be going to the course as the ultimate … ultimate … What was he going there as?

Subaru then woke up in the gym of an unknown school. The last thing he remembered was entering Yumenosaki so that he could attend the opening ceremony. So where was he now? He looked around, a hit of confusion struck his face when he noticed other students there as well. Who were they? Why are they here? A million questions rushed through his head and he was determined to get answers. He noticed a boy with beaujolais hair, fidgeting with a camera in his hands. He seemed to keep his head low, like he also has questions. Subaru then decided that since he was the first person he spotted that he could talk to him. As he walked up to the boy, he tried to appear more confident and friendly, pretending like he knew why he was here.

“Hello! I just woke up here and I think I'm supposed to be at the entrance ceremony for Yumenosaki Academy. Is this the right building or…?” Subaru decided to ask him. As the boy thought of a response, Subaru wondered if he made the wrong choice.

“No, this is Yumenosaki Academy. I'm also meant to be part of the entrance ceremony as a new student.” The other student added on, tilting his head up more.

Subaru’s eyes lit up as he heard that. At least he wasn’t alone. “Me too! Seems like we’ll be classmates! I'm Subaru Akehoshi! What's your name?”

“Mao Isara, i'm the ultimate photographer. Do you have an ultimate as well?” Mao asked Subaru, wondering what his could be. His cheery and determined demeanor could make him an ultimate with something like public speaking. Maybe Ultimate Motivational Speaker?

“Oh, I don’t remember mine.”

“You don’t remember?”

“Nope! Not at all!”

“How did you forget something as important as that!?”

“It just happened, I can’t remember anything else as well. Just my name and knowing I'm meant to be here.”

“That's … really unfortunate.” Mao felt bad for his classmate. Forgetting everything, that must be a terrible feeling. Like a burning picture, or an empty film. Something was meant to be there, but it’s gone.

“It should be fine! I’ll remember sooner or later! It seems like a lot of other people are here as well. Should we go meet them too?”

As Mao hesitated to respond to him, Subaru looked ahead at the crowd of people. He smiled at him and began to notice everyone. Colorful hair colors, shiny outfits, an exciting environment, this is exactly what he needed. A breath taken away from something old and taking in a new world.

The Firehouse AU spoilers // aka me breaking down over chapter 11

"He walks over, stepping in front of TK and lowering himself down to his knees on the hardwood. TK sniffs and won’t look at him. Carlos slides his hands down TK’s forearms, tugging his hands out from where they’re trapped so he can hold them. He brings them to his mouth to kiss TK’s knuckles one by one. On his left hand, Carlos places a kiss directly to the tattoo on his fourth finger. “You didn’t ruin me,” Carlos murmurs. “Losing you ruined me. I loved you so much I spent every day for a year trying to get back to you. I didn’t end up here because you fucked me up. I ended up here because for 14 years, I was alone too.”

“I met my soulmate when I was eight years old and then I had to live half my life without him. That’s what fucked me up. I had to leave, and my heart was still stuck up on that fire escape on West 77th Street and I didn’t know how to keep being me without it. Without you.”

them being flirty and playful. the stolen kisses behind closed doors, the winks and giggles and butterflies in stomach and smiles and memories and dozing off on the couch. them getting to have those private moments of sheer love amidst the heavy pain of the lost time and the impending doom of what's eventually coming. the contrast between tk wearing grey and yellow. carlos not trying to get info out of tk on his whereabouts and "instead, he kisses TK harder and drags him toward the bedroom" BECAUSE REUNITING WITH HIS FIRST AND THE ONLY LOVE OF HIS LIFE IS THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS. the achingly tender body worship. tk trying to cut down smoking, bc of carlos — because he now has something that makes him care. THEM ON THE FIRE ESCAPE and tk taking carlos' hands into his when he was silent for a minute to comfort him through getting vulnerable and carlos looking at their hands and thinking that they belong and complete each other. Carlos telling him how ruined and broken he was too all along. tk spiraling and breaking down and carlos kissing his knuckles and correcting him and comforting him with the truth. THEM AT TK'S PLACE. Carlos realising that tk's house is not a home because the reason that makes it so has been absent from tk's life when back then he used to have all of his favourite things all over the place. the BLUE MEMORY BOX and carlos seeing gwyn's face and how he once reassured his heartsick teenage heart that there was at least a gwyn back in new york loving her son fiercely when he can't do it himself anymore. and the only other memories in the box being JUST CARLOS and them sitting around reminders from their precious bitter-sweet history and carlos holding tk in his lap and carlos clasping his chain around tk's neck and wanting to tell him that he can keep all of him but he can't make a breakable promise. THE ARISTOCRATS and them talking about their first times and how it was all marked by each other’s absence. just like everything else......... I AM not FINE. i'm ruined!!!! beyond repair!!!! so so RUINED I'll never recover from this EVER

            “Warriors of Light… thank you for showing me the way…Zel, I’m sorry…”

            Y’zel whimpered a bit as Ysayle’s final words danced about the empty of his waking dreams. Startled awake, he looked up, pawing out from his place at the end of the sick bed until he found Zoissette’s ankle. As relief settled in, he rose, finding himself to be stiff from how he’d been curled up.

            He’d nary left the medical wing for days, save to freshen up and being forced to eat, refusing to leave the room longer than a bell. He couldn’t bare it, afraid she might simply slip back into the ether if left unwatched. Not that she didn’t have a revolving audience of Gage Acquisitions and allies there to in peek on her and offer aether. And of course, his cousin Shtola.

            His ears perked for a moment, then lowered slowly. With a nervous flit of his tail, he stood then spun about to see who was with them, finding the Boss leaned back in the side chair reading, sparing a glance over his sunglasses before returning his attention to the book. Meya slumped over the side of the bed, holding Zoissette’s hand, praying…or perhaps singing. He squirmed a bit and decided not to worry about it, feeling his stomach turn with hunger.

            Quietly, he made his leave from the infirmary, shutting the door behind him slowly. Free in the hall, he sighed then wandered toward his apartment in silence. A low hum graced his ears, then another. They’d been so frequent lately since the aftermath of the incident he’d almost grown accustomed to them. If only he could get used to the silence in between them.

            As he reached for his doorknob, his tail was pulled, forcing him to turn back to find a particularly cross looking Thancred staring at him, book under his arm. His lips moved, yet the words didn’t quite reach his ears, everything running together, though the glare was enough to tell he was being scolded. Concentrating on his mouth, his ears gave a little perk, focusing until his voice came through.

            “Well!?” the man asked indignantly.

            “I’m sorry…I didn’t catch what were you saying before,” Y’zel said softly, trying to think if he’d done anything to have had the other upset with him…or if they’d even ever had a single conversation together before.

            “Seven hells.  I was shouting for you all down the hall. I asked what possessed you to publish this tripe,” he asked, shoving the book into Y’zel’s arms.

            The Miqo’te looked down, finding a Sharlayan journal leafed with his recent entry: The Source, Its Reflections, and Soulmates.

            “My paper? What about it?”

            “It walks dangerously close to that of the Ascians’s ideas about Rejoining.”

            “That was not my intention. I only briefly mentioned the Rejoining in the context of everything else. The paper was more observations and positing questions about the implications of Rejoining or just how reliable those connections already are…”

            “If the wrong people read this Y’zel…”

            “They’d have to have the power to cross realms and orchestrate cataclysmic events the likes of a calamity. I do not think-“

            “It is only a matter of time with your coin researching the matter. No doubt when the knight is well enough to have her brain picked on more solutions. Scholar knows that her little incident will dissuade either of them from pressing forward.”

            “Still. I do not think-“

            “You didn’t think. Retract the paper. Have the Forum lock it away wherever they throw away their other dangerous texts.”

            Y’zel puffed up his cheeks then straightened up, “I’ve done nothing wrong except write about what I’ve observed to be true and made it clear that further information will have to be gathered over time with the help of Scions and the Warriors of Light. It is, at worst, a romantic lens on the situation. I do not advocate for an apocalypse anywhere!”    

            “There is a danger in how it is phrased. Someone is going to find this and use it as an excuse to make bad decisions. Did you not have anyone else take a look at this?

            Y’zel shook his head, “Then that is those are their bad decisions. It was seen fit to publish. If you wish to start a crusade on banning books, go join the Forum cronies!”

            With that, the Miqo’te turned heal, unable to parse what the other was saying in response as he slammed the door behind him. Tossing the book into his study, he moved on to find something to eat and wash up before his return to Zoissette’s side.

Meanwhile, In Sharlayan

A few days later...

I feel like the more we see the Ancients and Dark Enchantress Cookie, the more the prologue doesn’t make sense

Like, from what the prologue tells us, the Five Heroes fought against Dark Enchantress Cookie, then Dark Enchantress takes the five Soul Jams and they’re shattered, and in the wake of her and Pure Vanilla’s spell clashing, the five heroes, Dark Enchantress Cookie, and the Vanilla Kingdom all disappear (also the rest of their kingdoms are supposed to essentially crumble over time, but that’s less important)

And the game seems to go for the most part with this up until the reveal of Dark Enchantress Cookie’s true identity as White Lily Cookie. But honestly, I think that’s fine. Honestly I think it does work with what the prologue shows of her. Yes there’s now the confusion of why there’s essentially two White Lilies, but there’s also been evidence to show that there’s more to this story that we don’t know, and that there will be an explanation. Everything else however seems to be as we were told

In Pure Vanilla’s storyline, things seem to still line up. Now that Dark Enchantress Cookie has been freed, so have Pure Vanilla Cookie and the Vanilla Kingdom, and while we don’t see it, you could assume so have the others, but perhaps they were just scattered to other corders of Earthbread, hence why we don’t see them. Nothing contradicts that they disappeared too. Pomegranate also mentions how the Soul Jams are in shattered pieces across Earthbread, which we also know from the prologue. She also says that the spell going wrong between him and DE cursed the other Ancients, and yes, he calls it lies initially, the following dialogue implies that it’s true and that he was just telling himself that he didn’t

There is the question of how he suddenly has his whole Soul Jam back, but that’s like the only major contradiction, and it’s not one that’s really touched on. But overall things generally hold up

It’s at Hollyberry’s story that things start to get confusing. Now it does still use the “Soul Jam is shattered” thing (and is frankly the only one to keep that fact, aside from at the end where the Soul Jam suddenly becomes whole again but shush), with her shield’s pieces having been reconstructed over the years, but it’s the other things that start to contradict. For starters, Hollyberry didn’t seem to disappear as a result of the Dark Flour War, rather her disappearance seems to be that she left of her own accord, presumably sometime after the Dark Flour War, implying that she did not disappear. Also her memory problems aren’t like Pure Vanilla’s, since she seems to remember who she is, at least to some degree (I feel like it was very selective what she did and didn’t know, and the whole thing confuses me), but I suppose that doesn’t really matter as Pure Vanilla’s amnesia may just have been some sort of trauma defense thing, and thus just personal to him. I mean, Dark Enchantress remembers who she is

…I felt like I had more contradictions for her, but now I feel like the only major one here is that it’s implied that she didn’t disappear, but she stayed and went back to her kingdom

Oh wait, there’s also the fact that the Hollyberry Kingdom is fine and prospering, other than the whole dragon thing but no one seems too bothered by that. The whole idea that the world is suffering without the Ancients, specifically their own kingdoms, or that they were ever absent, just doesn’t feel like it’s there

But now let’s move on to Dark Cacao’s storyline, which I feel has the most contradictions

Hollyberry’s story feels a bit ambiguous whether the Ancients disappeared, but in Dark Cacao’s it outright says no they did not. Dark Cacao has been here and nothing implies he ever left, at least not for a significant period of time. Also, he has his whole Soul Jam, and again, nothing implies that he lost that or had to reconstruct it. He’s just had it the whole time. Both of these directly contradict the prologue

And while yes, his kingdom is suffering, and it’s partially because he lost his way, it wasn’t because of the Dark Flour War, rather this seems to have been a much more recent development with Affogato Cookie and particularly Dark Choco’s betrayal and exile. While some evidence may suggest things got worse for them after the Dark Flour War (in Dark Choco’s memories, his younger self seems to imply that the kingdom is isolating itself and is worse off for it), but things didn’t reach that breaking point until after Dark Choco’s banishment

Maybe that’s why the Dark Cacao storyline feels weird to me, because the conflict didn’t start because of things that happened in the Dark Flour War, nor does that seem to have had much effect on Dark Cacao or the kingdom, but rather it was because of something entirely separate

But yeah, going back to how things are presented to us now, the Ancients, other than Pure Vanilla alongside Dark Enchantress Cookie, never disappeared, their Soul Jams might have remained whole and with the heroes, and all the kingdoms seem to be doing fine (Dark Cacao’s not so much, but that’s due to external forces). So basically, pretty much all the points we see in the prologue don’t add up

Honestly at some point I start to feel like what happened in the prologue didn’t actually happen and rather that was just a fabricated story, and that we end up seeing what really happened

scott westerfeld's early novels are certainly Different and not always in a bad way, i actually think in some ways the writing is better and you can see the seeds of uglies and whatnot in those works, but also sometimes they're just so confusing to me, like that's part of why sci-fi and fantasy are hard for me to get into if i don't already know it because you're just thrown in and it's like hey is that a real science thing or a made up word and at least with popular series you can get info outside of the novel but not so with books barely anyone else has read
