I actually have zero clue if I've shared these before, I feel like I have but I can't tell if that's because I genuinely have or if I'm just having deja vu LMAO either way, these are some of my favorite chapter covers from the days of old when I was working on Time Gate: Reaper <3

One time, when I was bored, I killed a butterfly.

Unbeknownst to me, that butterfly had actually been the one that captivated Uzuki on a bright, summery afternoon. It was following this butterfly that led her to run into Mitsuhiro. They would then spend the day together, connecting on a level that they hadn't even considered possible before then; this day would turn into nights, adding up to weeks and eventually months of companionship and intimacy.

It was this relationship that gave them the strength to fight for one another so many times over the course of their lives. Had Uzuki not met him, she undoubtedly would have died separate from him. They would have never become Reapers together. Mitsuhiro would have been doomed to serve the Society as a demon vessel, and Uzuki would be left on her own, wondering what would have happened had she just showed mercy to a man who simply wanted to help her.

this is precisely why I find myself losing steam with Time Gate so much lol

like obviously where I am rn in the plot is still interesting and intense and it'll be awesome when it's done

but there are SO MANY BIG MOMENTS I'M EVEN MORE HYPED FOR

but the time it's taking me to get to them is like, making me less hyped? it's like watching a movie or listening to a song over and over again, when you live with these ideas in your head for so long eventually the excitement of getting to them wears off and that's when the burnout sets in (at least for me)

it also makes me worry i'm falling into the same trap of being like, "yeah rn i'm feeling like it's a drag but it'll be so much better once i get to this next part!!!" and i'm never just like, appreciating where i am rn because it's still way further than i was years ago, like i'm in the exact place I was hyped to be in back when I started and still feeling this way u.u always feels like this game of catch-up that I can never win 🥲

Thankfully I'm finding that grind not so bad with Rekindled but it's also just newer so it hasn't had that time to overcook in my brain LMAO

Early Reaction to Seahawks’ Draft Trades from the 12’s

As can be expected, reaction to the Seattle Seahawks trading down three times in the 2017 NFL Draft is mixed. Imagine that, human beings failing to have a monolithic response to a complex event for which they feel intense passion. Seahawks fans, the 12s, are nothing if not intense.

As is obvious, a bit more than half of the 12s who chimed in were happy with the trades. 39 of the 187 wanted Reuben Foster, and I’ll admit, I have some strong reservations about passing on him, despite that linebacker isn’t a top priority. AS I wrote previously, I’d rather not see this guy wreaking havoc versus the Seahawks twice a year for the next ten years.

43 wanted the Seahawks to draft another player with that 26th pick. I suspect many, as one 12 made clear, wanted cornerback Kevin King. I think that’s exactly who the Seahawks had targeted with the 34th overall pick, but when the Green Bay Packers snatched him away at 33, Schneider and Carroll addressed the defensive line needs. Okay, that last is a bit of a ringer, as it’s from our own Zach Peterson. He makes a great point though; it’s all about the hidden gems. Zach will have more to say on that topic quite soon.

So the draft isn’t complicated, you say? It’s just picking football players, it isn’t rocket science. Although if we needed help in that, there is a football player out there who could assist in interplanetary propulsion systems; yes, we’re looking at you, Joshua Dobbs. It might not be rocket science, but balancing the appeal of the “best athlete available” with the needs of your own team isn’t easy.

Add in that the needs of your team are two-fold. One must consider needs on the field – that’s Pete Carroll – and off the field – thank you John Schneider. Of course their areas of concern aren’t split that cleanly, but that’s a reasonable example for our purposes here.

So you need a defensive back. One that has the speed to cover deep routes, the agility to make cuts, the awareness to react at the last moment, and the power to level ball carriers. Sure. So Pete looks for the guy that comes closest to meeting those criteria, and might add a skill the current team lacks to some degree. Meanwhile, John reminds him that Player X will be an unrestricted free agent in 2019. Player X is Richard Sherman in this case. It’s always Richard Sherman, you guys know that.

So they hope to fill that possible hole with someone they can groom for the role. At the same time, they have impending free agents everywhere else, players with injury concerns, and players that simply could be replaced by someone better. Even for the Seahawks, yes.

The complications really set in knowing that 31 other teams are trying to do exactly the same thing you are with a very limited resource pool. You only get good draft picks if you have a bad year. Luckily for 12s, Seattle consistently chooses very late in the draft. The Seahawks have to figure out how to turn those late 20th round picks into early round talent. Based on the track record of Schneider and Carroll, they’re pretty darn good at that. And so far, I’d say they’re doing it again in 2017.

I've been going back into my folders and finishing old WIP's I never completed. I find myself doing this often when I'm experiencing burnout, it helps me create again without the experience of freezing in front of a blank canvas. Past me doesn't always screw me over ( ´･･)ﾉ(._.`)

How long do you usually take to plan for a really long story/comic? Do you do a rough plan or a fully detailed one? Any apps you use for planning?

It depends on the project. For my long-term series, it definitely takes me a good while to finalize everything from start to finish, but as a general rule, I try to keep my writing one step ahead of where I'm drawing, for two purposes: so I can have a goal in mind to propel the comic forward (I don't want to be writing or drawing on the fly more than I have to), and so I can have enough planned ahead for editing, because by the time I get to the thing I've planned, my writing has likely grown more and my perspective on it has shifted, so I'm not releasing "first takes", so to speak.

Usually I use LibreOffice and just sort of keep a few separate files for different purposes. I always have a "[story] shit" file of some kind where I just dump thoughts and notes that I don't wanna lose lmao but then I usually also have a file that's meant for outlining. I think Rekindled is the first comic where I haven't employed my spreadsheet method, which is when I'd use Excel/Spreadsheets to lay out panel descriptions and dialogue. So like this:

Rekindled is more just note-taking, what I want to happen in each episode, and if there's any dialogue I come up with that I definitely want to include, I write it down in there. I've done all of Rekindled's process through Scrivener, which I learned how to use shortly before starting it. IDK yet if I like Scrivener enough to use it for my bigger projects, but it's been helpful for organization and keeping my files all in one central "hub" area.

So right now I have up to about Episode 70 drafted out like that ^^^ but things do change during the actual production of the episodes. Sometimes I'll write something in my notes that doesn't flow well in actual comic form. Sometimes I'll write dialogue during the sketching stage that I don't like anymore by the time I get to the final rendering. It's all a stage-by-stage process from drafting to final release.

The question of "how long" really just comes down to the note-taking process. I tend to work in bursts, the last time I did any written episode layouts was a few weeks ago and that was because I got like, 40+ episodes done in a day LOL So I'm all set for the next little bit, but I'll have to get back to planning by Episode 50 if I haven't done any before then. I'd like to have the entirety of Rekindled plotted out by the end of the year so I can get a more exact answer of how long Rekindled will be :' )

When it comes to software/apps, keep it simple, use what you know. I've been using standard word editors and spreadsheets for years now because it works for me. Scrivener's been fun to learn but as I mentioned, IDK if I'm gonna be able to stick with it for bigger projects like Time Gate because it feels like I'm wearing different shoes that I'm not used to lol But that's just me, feeling "at home" with my software is just an important thing to me, for others it might not matter so much. Scrivener definitely has the most features for drafting/writing/editing, but it's also not very beginner-friendly and there's a huge learning curve to really understanding how the software is designed and what it fully offers.

There's also Plottr which I've been using for [AFTERBIRTH], it's really helpful for people who need visual aids because it allows you to lay out story timelines through imagery. But I really only use it for laying out story beats from end to end, I don't use it much beyond that, any extensive note taking or scripting happens in actual word documents.

(idk if this is how you're actually supposed to use Plottr but it's how I use it so w/e lolol)

Ultimately it's all up to you, what works for me might not work for others so don't be afraid to try things even if it ends up not working out for you. Obv that might be a bit more of a "nah" when it comes to paid software like Scrivener and Plottr, but there are loads of tutorials on Youtube that teach you how to use the software that you can hopefully use as a glimpse into how they work to see if they'd be up your alley before paying money for 'em.

other fun facts:

he's currently on his 9998th time running through the core timeline, also known as "looping"

he can shapeshift into any person he's formed a soul bond with, but tends to stick to his favorites, often the form of his apprentices

as overpowered as he is, he's found himself stuck with the curse of immortality - he's been searching for the 'perfect timeline' that will hopefully result in his death

he has seven apprentices, plus one former apprentice who he fired but keeps showing up to the meetings anyways. unfortunately that same apprentice is the only other person who's as powerful as he is so he can't really do anything about it LMAO

his weapon of choice is the scythe but considering he's an overpowered murder hobo who can turn people's molecular structure into oatmeal, it's really just for cool points

he has been successfully "killed" approximately 1 time at the same point on repeat across 9998 timelines by one person - a child with a kitchen knife. he's been chasing that feeling ever since.

i'm going to spoil a little bit of time gate but TRUST me, there's a reason for it

so there's this bit in one of the later books where one of our former main protagonists explains the concept of meta jumping through timelines

essentially, it's to answer the question, "can you keep jumping after a jump?"

and ofc the answer is, well, yes

but it comes with drawbacks

and he goes on to explain those drawbacks with a chessboard

the concept being that, if you (represented by the king or queen or whatever piece you so choose) jump to another chessboard in a similar or otherwise the same state as your ongoing game, you can have multiple outcomes play out

but if you want to go back to your original timeline, pre-jump, that will become more difficult the more meta jumps you've done, as your original timeline is left further and further behind

in this case, your original timeline is that original chess game, and the more you meta jump, the more your pathway back becomes more obfuscated and confused and you risk being detached from your original timeline forever

so anyways

i'm saying all this

because 5D Chess with Multiverse Time Travel exists now

and on the one hand, i'm screaming as i think about hale trying to explain exactly what the game is doing
