Our Denim Day 2019 Sexual Assault Awareness Campaign is launching this month and we want to thank all of the incredible advocates, young #HSFI designers and teaching staff, and a special thank you to our design instructors and co-designers Sergio Guadarrama and Kade Johnson. Thank you so much to @rialtojeanproject for donating all of the denim and paint to our @beautyforfreedom #ProjectGhana students from @challengingheights This is youth activism through fashion at a really exciting level with many layers. The students who are designing and the young survivors of labor trafficking and at-risk youth who have painted this denim and using their creative voices to advocate for victims and survivors of sexual violence around the globe!!! Here are a few stats: Sexual violence is a major public health issue. • 1 in 5 women (18.3%) in the United States have been raped at some time in their lives • 1 in 71 men (1.4%) in the United States have been raped at some time in their lives Sexual violence other than rape reveals the full scope of the problem. • Nearly 1 in 2 women (44.6%) experienced sexual violence victimization other than rape at some point in their lives • 1 in 5 men (22.2%) experienced sexual violence victimization other than rape at some point in their lives . . . . . So much love and appreciation our campaign model the #divine activist and artist @indyamoore “The future is restorative accountability”. #TheFutureIs #DenimDay2019 #SexualAssaultAwarenessMonth #SAAM @celestinocouture @beautyforfreedom @stepstoendfv @denimday @geremydubensky @aggie1202 @rialtojeanproject @challengingheights @fashionhighnyc @denimdaynyc #YouthActivismInAction #CelestinoMoments #WomenOfCelestino @hairbybklynwarhol @tommymakeup_ @viola_k_nyc @alchemicalstudios Video by @jerrydigital https://www.instagram.com/p/BvuDkxnl9q-/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ozo6npr5r4yc

https://bit.ly/3km7Wd8 Full Report on our FB Page Images and Video by @BeautyForFreedom via our #ProjectGhana 2017 Arts and Skills Training Empowerment Initiative. We were able to join the Rescue Team at Challenging Heights, an opportunity to learn more about the root causes of labor trafficking on Lake Volta so that we could better serve the survivors and at-risk youth we work with globally. To see the brutality, the inhumane conditions these children work under…no human being should be treated the way these children are treated. THIS…MUST…END #EndHumanTrafficking #JoinTheFight #ArtHeals #SupportSurvivors Around 20,000 children work on the lake, enslaved by the fishermen they call “master.” Most of the children come to the lake from hundreds of miles away. They are kidnapped, coerced and often sold to human traffickers, sometimes for as little as $20-$50 USD. While slavery may be as old as recorded history, the problem of children being used in the fishing industry on Lake Volta is not. The lake was only created in 1965, when Ghana constructed a hydro-electric dam downstream, using funds from the Word Bank, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The dam now supplies all of Ghana’s electricity, with the surplus sold to neighboring countries. A Common Story Kofi was six years old when a man appeared at his grandmother's house. He owned a fishing boat, he explained. He was looking for boys to come and work on the waters of Lake Volta, to learn the ways of the fishing boats. He promised a good job, a steady wage, enough food, a safe place to sleep. His promises were as empty as his smile. A decision made out of desperation Adwoa gathered fruit and vegetables to sell at the local markets for a few dollars at a time. "I [don't] have the financial means to provide for [my grandchildren] the way I really want, but God gives me the energy to labour to feed them and myself." So when the man, a relative, offered to take three of the children to work on his fishing boat, she was torn. But they would have something to eat and somewhere to sleep, and she would have a little more for the children who remained. She made her decision. She let them go. Our final week of @beautyforfreedom workshops have been the BEST DAYS EVER with the youth of @challengingheights We expanded out #ProjectGhana photojournalism workshops this year and the students delved deeper into developing their personal interviewing styles and portraiture photography. The youth chose their partners and each student had an opportunity to interview and photograph their subjects. They had amazing interviews with doctors and medical staff at a local prestigious hospital, Challenging Heights staff at their headquarters, shop owners, a local pharmacist, a natural health food store owner, a seamstress, shoemaker, and the wonderful community members in Winneba. Their interviews were engaging, so sincere and we want to thank all of the community who came out in support of these brilliant and bright youth. They were so patient and kind. Words can’t express how grateful we are to everyone involved and the time each person took to speak with our students! 🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭 Please continue to support our programming and donate! Investing in a child’s hopes and dreams is investing in a brighter tomorrow❤️❤️❤️(Link in bio) Follow the journey. #ArtHeals #EmpowerSurvivors #EndChildLabor #EndHumanTrafficking #BeautyForFreedom Photo Credit - @suwanaperry @jerrydigital (at Ghana) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2bJTdklKRD/?igshid=1bb9ehp1haiwz

Our @beautyforfreedom #ProjectGhana initiative expanded this year and we were able to offer an additional @challengingheights school our creative therapeutic programming. Many of these youth have never painted before. As we started the day, there was complete silence as the youth looked at all of the paints and brushes and paper with curiosity. Our curricula yesterday was based on freedom of expression and the fact that art is a way to create with 100% success. What any mind can conceive is always perfection...no matter what age, gender, background. We are all creators in one way or another❤️❤️❤️❤️ The Senya Vocational School offers training for young people in two vocations: sewing and catering. These vocations are traditionally dominated by women, and as such, the majority of the past and present students are women. The programme lasts for two years, at the end of which, each graduate writes standardized examinations and receives the nationally-recognized NVTI certificate. In addition to recognition, this certificate affords graduates the credentials necessary to pursue further levels of vocational education. 🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭 We are truly grateful for each member of our team and each and every youth in the program! Please continue to support our mission and donate.
