OKAY SINCE NOBODYS ASKING BUT AT THE SAME TIME EXPRESSING INTEREST I will give a barebones rundown on these 4 until i do the powerpoint. BE AWARE that each’s backstory is under heavy reconstruction due to the fact that theyre moving over from another wip entirely but their base personalities should be the same-
Dorian: hes from the UK. his hair is BLONDE, NOT WHITE. hes an arrogant spoiled loser whose family just took a beating down the social ladder so hes got all sorts of hubris and an unfounded sense of superiority. was sick a lot as a kid and so becuz of that was isolated from others…he can certainly be a jerk/bastard/ignoramus but he truly does experience empathy and cares abt people (cuz of certain Events in his Youth), he just doesnt really know how to…express that ig. hes currently stuck in america as the photographer for some storm chasers. germaphobe. afraid of homeless ppl
Raleigh: a 7 foot tall bioengineered supersoldier of sorts from Louisiana, where she spent half of her youth as an oil pirate in the gulf of mexico and the other half under the care of a catholic priest in deux orleans. shes super cool and chillax, loves helping people, has an interest in fungi, so why is she a storm chaser? i dunno yet but she does provide a pretty good layer of security for the team when theyre traveling through the southeast and the plains. has all the energy in the world and probs the most competent/trustworthy person to meet ever….umm she is also very blunt and reckless. she does not value her own life a lot so she is always getting injured. erm…tramsgender
formerly-osea: i am still figuring out his new name leabe me aloen…uh he is an aspiring revolutionary of sorts. hes def a stereotypical twitter leftist of sorts and likes to talk abt burning down police stations and walmarts but doesn’t do any of that. he reads a lot of theory but doesnt practice. he also has some anger issues and struggles a bit with his roots as the son of asian immigrants in america…hes very selfish and has an inferiority complex but hes super optimistic and charismatic so thats cool…he and raleigh r very mischievous. hes the radar tech
West, formerly Windsor: this guy is from the western US hence his name, but he never tells anyone where hes from exactly or what he used to do. as of rn im thinking like, former militant for some terrorist organization lol. hes done a ton of shady shit and war crimes…hes always bored and tired. always likes to listen in on what people r talking abt and what theyre doing. hes not very good at making friends but he is like, super reliable and down to earth. he does a lot of driving for the team and helps with navigation…also tramsgender 🙂↕️
AND THERES MORE PEOPLE ON THE TEAM BTW!! i just have to flesh them out…so theres like 8 or 9 peeps on the storm chaser team plus one pygmy goat. i will have a post for them as well hopefully

October 2024 Important Dates
AKA my notes on The Astrology Podcast's October Forecast, hosted by Chris Brennan and Austin Coppock.
Here's a graphic from honeycomb.co showing the exactness of planetary transits throughout the month as well:
September Recap: We're starting the month in the middle of eclipse season (there was a lunar eclipse in Pisces on September 17th). Chris talks about how the biggest intensity of events usually occurs within 10 days on either side of an eclipse. For example, on the 10th there was the US Presidential debate, which fell in Harris's 10th house/North Node and indeed represented an improvement in her public image. The Vice Presidential debate also takes place today, October 1st, right before the next eclipse. Another Pisces eclipse story is the second assassination attempt on Trump--Chris & Austin connect these to the close square of Uranus on his natal Mars and on top of his natal Midheaven. Using nativities, Chris points out that for the past 20 years the winning presidential candidate has had an eclipse in an angular house, which would point towards Harris winning. However, using zodiacal releasing, Trump is set to enter a new era of prominence in April of next year--whether from presidency or another set is unclear. There are a lot of factors indicating this year's election (and the time between then and the inauguration period!) will be confusing and full of surprises.
Another eclipse story is Israel's attack on Lebanon--the pagers were detonated on the day of the Pisces eclipse. The current war in Palestine began under last year's Libra eclipse, and escalation with Iran occurred along an eclipse as well. They predict October 2nd may very well be the date Israel starts a ground offensive into Lebanon, with implications of a regional war (A/N: this episode was recorded September 29th). There will be another eclipse in Aries before the nodes move off this axis, but the Pisces eclipse's coincidence with the electronics attacks and assassination of Nasrallah may be foreshadowing another 2 years of conflict.
The Pisces eclipse also highlighted Saturn's transit through Pisces: the OceanGate submarine wreck was finally found (crushed during Saturn rx), as well as the sunken wreck of the Erebus, a 19th-century polar exploration vessel. In other water disasters, Hurricane Helene ravaged much of the Appalachian US, the worst storm in a century for many cities and small towns. There were also devastating floods in Europe, Nigeria, and India and typhoons hitting much of East Asia.
October 2nd - Solar eclipse in Libra
Immediately afterwards, the Sun and Moon move towards a square with Mars, boding ill for world events with its significations of war, anger, and aggression. Eclipses on a particular axis often indicate a series of events over about a year and a half (this one began early October), so we know already know which stories are going to wrap up to make way for something new. In our personal lives changes may be for the better--for example, for one viewer this indicates the end of a relationship making room for a new one. Mercury has just separated from a cazimi with the Sun (11♎), and Mars is waiting at 15 Cancer to square all of these planets after they conjoin each other. The changes will take place abruptly, jarringly, and painfully for some. Eclipses shock us, even when they're positive. Mars-Mercury indicates arguments, fighting words, and foul language (goes direct at 17 Libra/Cancer on the 6th). Be careful with your words, as this may represent a longer conflict than you realize, as Mars enters its pre-retrograde shadow period soon after:
Like all retrogrades, Mars brings revisions, repeats, and unexpected delays. With Mars hanging out in the same few degrees of Cancer & Leo for awhile, we'll be spending a lot of time and energy in those areas of our chart. Mars retrograde can work well for those born under one, though--for Mars rx natives sometimes it's when big projects finally come to fruition with them.
During the Mars-Mercury conflict, we will have some support: Venus (14♏) will trine Saturn (14♓) on the 4th-5th, and on the 8th she'll (18♏) trine Mars (18♋) with reception. She comes in to offer a bit of a salve after the chafing of Mars contacts. Also on that day, soon-to-retrograde Jupiter (21♊) will trine Mercury (21♎) with reception, soothing some of the previous hard aspect to Mars. These are the kinds of situations where a terrible accident occurs, but you miraculously escape major injury. This can also represent extremes of good and bad happening at the same time.
October 6th - Mercury square Mars (discussed above)
October 9th - Jupiter stations retrograde He's going to hang out in the same few degrees of Gemini for a long time. See eclipse above for some details on transits leading up to this.
October 11th - Pluto stations direct From the 11th-13th Pluto, while slowing down and stationing, squares Mercury as the inner planet moves from Libra to Scorpio. We've been having Pluto stations in Capricorn since 2008-9, and this is the last he'll be in Capricorn for the rest of any of our lifetimes. Mercury brings the underworld planet's hidden matters to light: think investigative journalism, mystery stories, and exposés on dark scandals. Conversely, we can also see manipulation, control, and suppression of information by forces who prefer to remain in the shadows. Pluto is like a doorway to the underworld: it both plunges things into obscurity and brings up secrets from the depths. This is one last burst of intensity in late Capricorn/cardinal signs for those of us who've been feeling its effects--think of molting, with its vulnerabilities and benefits alike. This also marks the end of the United States' Pluto return--an uncertain evaluation of the next 250 years.
October 13th - Mercury enters Scorpio
October 14th - Sun square Mars While the Sun (21♎) squares Mars (21♋) with Jupiter (21♊) attempting to mediate by trining the Sun, Venus (26♏) opposes Uranus (26♉). With Uranus-Venus we may see some surprises in our relationships. (Chris notes Mercury is at 01Scorpio this day, same as Kamala Harris's natal chart, so the news will probably be about her.)
October 17th - Aries Full Moon, Venus enters Sagittarius
Normally we'd breathe a sigh of relief that eclipse season is over, but the luminaries (🌙:24♈,🌞:24♎) are coming right off a square to Mars (22♋), and are headed right into a square with Pluto (29♑). Thus, by the end of the month, Mars and Pluto begin to oppose each other, an intense configuration that will stay with us for the rest of the year thanks to Mars's retrograde. Don't ignore the little issues that Mars is highlighting in your life; nip things in the bud or keep an eye on them because the problems will only intensify over the next few months. The Mars-Pluto opposition will go exact right around election day in the US, or early November. Thus this full moon sets an ominous tone for the months ahead.
Mars signifies cutting, separation, and conflict, while Pluto takes themes to their utmost extremes, making the small massive and the massive small (think of a mushroom cloud explosion borne from mere atoms colliding). Combined, this indicates annihilation, survival responses, severe overreactions, power struggles, aggression & confrontations, manipulation and control. Other keywords are ruthlessness, forcefulness, and lashing out at perceived enemies, real or imagined. Pluto really enjoys hidden power as well--we may fall for decoys of where the real power lies. Unfortunately this strongly overshadows the US election. Overall, with Pluto involved we can't see clearly, so paranoia and conspiracies abound. It can also indicate horrific acts coming to light, like CBS News publishing the first photographs of torture at Abu Ghraib during the Mars-Pluto opposition of late April 2004, and financial developments like the 2008 bank crashes.
In our personal lives, this may be a period of extreme mental or physical exertion where you accomplish more than you thought possible. Austin cautions us not to react to negative things in a way that makes the situation worse, which is our impulse with Mars in Cancer. Sometimes we have to accept that events beyond our power--control what you can and accept what you can't. Uranus in Taurus will also get folded into this background tension via sextile with Pluto.
October 22nd - Sun enters Scorpio
October 25th - Auspicious electional date
This is a difficult month, but if you have to do something important, the 25th is a good time. A few different times will work; Chris likes around 3PM local time, adjusting until the Ascendant is at about 20 Aquarius. This makes the ruler Saturn in the 2nd house in a day chart, good for financial matters. The Leo Moon applies to a sextile with Jupiter, boding well for earthly events--as long as you can catch it when the moon is applying (at a lower degree; moving towards the aspect) rather than separating (at a higher degree, moving away). (Viewers on the West Coast of the US, for example, may have to move it back a day.) With 20Aquarius rising you get a nice, supportive trine from Jupiter in the 5th house, good for games and leisurely activities. Venus in the 11th house is also helpful, and in Denver they were able to get her near the Midheaven as well, though it's not a dealbreaker if you can't get that to line up. Venus in the 11th, ruled by Jupiter, does well with friends and alliances. Furthermore, though she is applying to a square with Saturn, in this chart it has her in contact with the Ascendant ruler, affirming and supporting you and the actions you take at this time. Not recommended for health or routine matters with a cranky day chart detriment Mars in the 6th house, and beware of Pluto in the 12th house of hidden enemies and self-undoing. Thus, it's not ideal, but we can get some things done.
October 28th - Venus square retrograde Saturn Venus would normally be happy to get out of her detriment Scorpio and into a neutral sign like Sagittarius, but she has to get past this square to Saturn before she can really party. However, this does put her in a whole-sign opposition to Jupiter while being received by him (in his domicile), giving a silver (copper) lining to everything else going on. When one benefic is setting, the other is rising for us.
October 30th - Mercury opposes Uranus (not pictured) At 25 of Scorpio and Taurus respectively, this may be an "October surprise" news scandal (or events in our personal lives).

Newscasters for the daily Spiralian TV program focused on the Archimedes Ward chuckle warmly to each other, following the happy conclusion of a news story about a rescued dog.
The next segment is announced to be the weather forecast, a simple transition leading it in. The friendly(?) face of Dr. Caelum stands at attention in front of a green screen, displaying a colorful display of the area. He gives a small clap in greeting.
“Good morning, citizens of Archimedes Ward. I’m Dr. Caelum, and this is your Very Typical forecast for the day. Ahem!
“Today is the 21st of July. The current conditions are fair, with partly-cloudy weather and moderate temperatures.”
He steps to the side with the aid of his cane, as though about to gesture toward the weekly forecast, but the visual projected beside him is that of something strange.
An distant ominous human figure, seemingly captured by a phone camera, crouches low to the ground at the edge of the Ward. He’s dressed in black; there’s also an huge, unholy, impossible jumble of a shape stretching out behind one shoulder. There’s something shining in one hand, kept close to his chest; the other hand can be seen braced against the ground, bearing the appearance of wicked black claws. The contrast of the colors makes him stand out easily from the architecture of Archimedes. Demon incarnate.
“A, quote, ‘Humanoid Typhoon’ is expected to make landfall imminently. Catastrophic loss of life will occur sometime within the next two hours, give or take.”
The visual changes once more: back to the colorful map of Archimedes. This time, instead of showing areas of precipitation or temperature, there is a thick line of purple that begins at the edge of the Ward, slowly moving right through it, until it reaches the edge of Point Zero. Anyone familiar with navigating the streets of Archimedes can identify that the animated trail is a common walking path down the main streets.
“Now, being nearby or within the highlighted area of effect will subject surroundings to the steady and unstoppable depletion of their lives. It may also subject surroundings to high-impact forces, equivalent to the speed of some high-speed trains.
“So take protective measures, hm? Calmly evacuate–staying indoors will not save you.”
The way he delivered such a statement so casually is a little unnerving…
“Incidentally, do note that while it is not recommended, and I do mean Not Recommended, it is indeed possible to put an end to the Humanoid Typhoon - our own Vash the Stampede - before he walks the full path of destruction. Upon his death or his reaching of Point Zero, reconstruction of any property damage will be compensated for and worked upon immediately. Wouldn’t want to dampen your summer plans, hm?~
“Well! That’s the forecast for today–good luck! Dr. Caelum, signing off; back to you, John.”
(The rest of the broadcast, for the next hour, has its newscasters behaving normally as ever. The news ticker crawling along the bottom of the screen reads HUMANOID TYPHOON IN ARCHIMEDES - LIVE COVERAGE TO FOLLOW.)

hi! this is a prelude to vash's giant challenge!
here's a rundown:
Vash has awakened on the very edge of Archimedes Ward, bearing his finale-episode appearance ( complete with wing, and dangerous purple cube! ). As predicted on the news' weather forecast, he will be attempting to walk directly through the main streets of Archimedes until he reaches Point Zero (the hole). For those without the context of the cube: it's incredibly volatile, and has the potential to wipe out the entire Ward in a blast of energy.
Here are some cube facts, unique to this Challenge:
This cube is hand-sized, a bit bigger than the size of a Rubik's cube. It constantly drains the life force of its surroundings in a 15m radius (that's about 20 walking steps, or 1 & 1/2 schoolbuses end-to-end).
If Vash dies, the cube detonates. Letting anyone else have sole hold of the cube detonates it.
Trying to drag or carry Vash's body around will detonate it. Attempts to teleport Vash or the cube will not work.
The following memories, powers, and detriments apply to Vash for this challenge:
Memories: Vash is given future memories of everything leading up to JuLai's explosion. This is bestowed to him by the Stars to remind him of his failure he's yet to make, and what's at stake for the Archimedes Ward should he learn nothing and fail again.
Powers: Vash is temporarily given his physical appearance from the bulk of the final episode of Trigun Stampede, and all other abilities unlocked. This includes his wing, which can help shield him from damage; however, he is completely unable to fly with it, and it still causes him constant pain to have. This is bestowed to him by the Stars, to supply him with the strength to prevent what happened to JuLai to happen to the Archimedes Ward.
Detriments: The Stars have induced in Vash constant total-body pain, forcing him to reduce his movement to walking speed at most. The cube he's carrying constantly drains the life forces of its surroundings in a 15m radius; Vash is a pacifist. The Archimedes Ward was chosen because Vash has been housed here for his entire stay; he's been making friends with NPCs and muses alike, here. I want him to have to see, face-to-face, everyone whose lives he threatens by simply existing nearby them as he is in this Challenge. This Challenge is an endurance test for Vash on many levels.
What this means for your muse:
If involved in Giant Challenge thread - Congratulations! Your muse has taken the opportunity to find themself on Vash's path of destruction. It's up to you on what you want them to do about it.
Do you want them to get in his way, and try to talk things out with him? Perhaps your muse's negotiation skills are more on the violent side, and they'd rather aim for the cube, or his head? You can even have your muse try to protect innocent bystanders who would've otherwise perished by Vash's actions. Given the nature of the cube, involving your muse in such close proximity to Vash puts them at incredible risk of injury and death.
Keep your muse's reasons and response in consideration - I'll message you when your character's next up to reply to the thread. Feel free to let me know if you'd rather opt out of your muse's involvement, in light of the detail of the Challenge here.
If uninvolved in Giant Challenge thread - Congratulations! Your muse has not taken the opportunity to find themself on Vash's path of destruction.
You're whole-heartedly encouraged to write minis, starters, drabbles, etc. depicting any sort of reaction to what's unfolding on television broadcast. Maybe your muse recognizes this edition of Vash the Stampede; if this is the first time they've ever heard of him, what do they think of the way he appears on the screen? Or perhaps your muse has ties to Archimedes and has evacuated safely, and is altogether focused on getting their loved ones to safety, as well.
...You're also not obligated to acknowledge what's going on, either! No need to write anything about this if you don't want to.
— — — — — —
the challenge thread will be posted in a couple hours; i wanna give people time to tell me they're opting out of the thread in light of this new information about it, and i also don't want to overload anyone lol
^(that being said, if you're still sticking around as a part of the interest check, know that i'm in contact with the first one up and the last one up / those spots are dedicated!)
also, i'm grateful for the mods in allowing me their permission to use their Star, Caelum, just for this drabble. thank you
if you have any questions, would like to inform me of your opting out of the thread, etc, please message me!

At least 126 dead and missing in massive flooding and landslides in Philippines
The number of dead and missing in massive flooding and landslides wrought by Tropical Storm Trami in the Philippines has reached nearly 130 and the president said Saturday that many areas remained isolated with people in need of rescue.
Trami blew away from the northwestern Philippines on Friday, leaving at least 85 people dead and 41 others missing in one of the Southeast Asian archipelago’s deadliest and most destructive storms so far this year, the government’s disaster-response agency said. The death toll was expected to rise as reports come in from previously isolated areas.
Dozens of police, firefighters and other emergency personnel, backed by three backhoes and sniffer dogs, dug up one of the last two missing villagers in the lakeside town of Talisay in Batangas province Saturday.
A father, who was waiting for word on his missing 14-year-old daughter, wept as rescuers placed the remains in a black body bag. Distraught, he followed police officers, who carried the body bag down a mud-strewn village alley to a police van when one weeping resident approaching him to express her sympathies.
The man said he was sure it was his daughter, but authorities needed to do checks to confirm the identity of the villager dug up in the mound.
In a nearby basketball gym at the town center, more than a dozen white coffins were laid side by side, bearing the remains of those found in the heaps of mud, boulders and trees that cascaded Thursday afternoon down the steep slope of a wooded ridge in Talisay’s Sampaloc village.
President Ferdinand Marcos, who inspected another hard-hit region southeast of Manila Saturday, said the unusually large volume of rainfall dumped by the storm — including in some areas that saw one to two months’ worth of rainfall in just 24 hours — overwhelmed flood controls in provinces lashed by Trami.
“We’re not done yet with our rescue work,” he said. “Our problem here, there are still many areas that remained flooded and could not be accessed even big trucks.”
His administration, Marcos said, would plan to start work on a major flood control project that can meet the unprecedented threats posed by climate change.
More than 5 million people were in the path of the storm, including nearly half a million who mostly fled to more than 6,300 emergency shelters in several provinces, the government agency said.
In an emergency Cabinet meeting, Marcos raised concerns over reports by government forecasters that the storm — the 11th to hit the Philippines this year — could make a U-turn next week as it is pushed back by high-pressure winds in the South China Sea.
The storm was forecast to batter Vietnam over the weekend if it would not veer off course.
The Philippine government shut down schools and government offices for the third day on Friday to keep millions of people safe on the main northern island of Luzon. Inter-island ferry services were also suspended, stranding thousands.
Weather has cleared in many areas on Saturday, allowing cleanup work in most areas.
Each year, about 20 storms and typhoons batter the Philippines, a Southeast Asian archipelago which lies between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan, one of the strongest recorded tropical cyclones, left more than 7,300 people dead or missing and flattened entire villages.

Spain Defense Market: A Comprehensive Overview
The Spain defense market has seen significant growth in recent years, driven by both domestic security concerns and Spain’s commitment to its international alliances, particularly NATO and the European Union. This article delves into the key factors shaping the defense industry in Spain, including market trends, major players, procurement strategies, and future forecasts.
Overview of Spain's Defense Market
Spain is among the leading defense spenders in Europe, reflecting its strategic position in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. As of 2023, Spain’s defense budget is estimated at €14.7 billion, representing a substantial increase over the past decade. The country's defense policy aims to modernize its military capabilities, ensuring that Spain can respond to both conventional and non-conventional threats.
Key areas of investment include air and missile defense systems, naval modernization, cybersecurity, and defense electronics. Spain is also heavily involved in European defense initiatives, participating in collaborative projects such as the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) alongside France and Germany.
Defense Spending and Procurement
Spain’s defense spending has been gradually increasing, largely due to international pressure from NATO to allocate 2% of its GDP to defense. While it has not yet reached this target, Spain has steadily raised its defense budget, with significant investments in research and development, personnel, and procurement programs.
Major procurement programs include:
Naval Expansion: The Spanish Navy continues to modernize its fleet with the acquisition of new frigates, submarines, and support vessels. The F-110 frigate project is one of the flagship programs, providing advanced combat and defense capabilities.
Air Force Modernization: Spain is upgrading its fighter fleet by participating in the FCAS program. Additionally, Spain has been updating its fleet of Eurofighter Typhoon jets and has procured transport aircraft like the Airbus A400M.
Cyber Defense: With the growing threat of cyberattacks, Spain has placed increased emphasis on cybersecurity and digital defense systems. The country has launched initiatives to strengthen its cyber resilience, particularly within military and governmental infrastructure.
Major Players in Spain's Defense Industry
Several key defense contractors dominate the Spanish market, both domestic and international. The most notable domestic players include Navantia, Indra Sistemas, and Expal Systems.
Navantia: One of the largest shipbuilders in Spain, specializing in military vessels and submarines. Navantia plays a crucial role in Spain's naval expansion and modernization efforts.
Indra Sistemas: A technology and consulting firm that provides advanced defense electronics, IT solutions, and cybersecurity services to both the military and civilian sectors.
Expal Systems: A leading company in the field of ammunition and explosives, supporting the Spanish Armed Forces and export markets.
International defense companies, such as Airbus, Lockheed Martin, and Thales, also have a strong presence in Spain, providing key systems and technologies for the Spanish military.
Spain’s Role in International Defense
Spain is a vital member of NATO and the European Union’s Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP). Its strategic location near the Strait of Gibraltar and its borders with North Africa make it a key player in regional security and counterterrorism operations.
Moreover, Spain actively participates in international peacekeeping missions, particularly in Africa and the Middle East, contributing both military personnel and resources to support stability and security in these regions. Spain’s involvement in multilateral organizations reinforces its commitment to collective defense and global security.
Challenges Facing Spain's Defense Market
While Spain’s defense market is growing, it faces several challenges:
Budgetary Constraints: Despite increasing defense spending, Spain faces economic pressures that could limit its ability to sustain high levels of defense investment in the long term.
Technological Gaps: While Spain is involved in cutting-edge programs like FCAS, it still relies on foreign technology for many critical defense capabilities, particularly in areas like missile defense and advanced avionics.
Geopolitical Risks: Spain’s proximity to North Africa and the Sahel region exposes it to geopolitical instability, including terrorism, illegal migration, and organized crime. Addressing these threats requires sustained investment in defense capabilities and international collaboration.
Future Outlook for Spain's Defense Market
The future of Spain’s defense market looks promising, with sustained growth expected over the next decade. The country’s commitment to NATO, its involvement in European defense projects, and the ongoing modernization of its armed forces will drive demand for advanced defense technologies and systems.
In the coming years, Spain is likely to focus on enhancing its cybersecurity capabilities, improving military mobility, and expanding its space defense capabilities. Additionally, Spain’s defense industry will likely seek to expand its footprint in the global market, particularly in Latin America and Africa, where Spanish companies are already well-positioned to offer defense solutions.

Francine Bears Down on Louisiana
After forming in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Francine set its sights on the coast of Louisiana in September 2024. Forecasters expected the storm to make landfall the evening of September 11, bringing dangerous storm surge to parts of the Louisiana coast and heavy rainfall along a large swath of the Gulf Coast, from western Louisiana to coastal Alabama. Francine will be the third hurricane to make landfall in the United States so far this season.
Francine developed into a tropical storm on September 9 off the eastern coast of Mexico. This image, acquired by the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) on the NOAA-21 satellite, shows the storm at 2:25 p.m. Central Time (19:25 Universal Time) on September 10. At the time, Francine remained a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds of about 65 miles (105 kilometers) per hour. Fueled by warm water in the Gulf, it strengthened to a Category 1 hurricane about five hours later.
Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are a fair predictor of the readiness of the ocean to fuel and sustain storms. Meteorologists generally agree that SSTs should be above 82 degrees Fahrenheit (27.8 degrees Celsius) to sustain and intensify hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons. During the time of Francine’s development on September 8 to 10, temperatures in the southwestern Gulf were several degrees above that threshold and slightly above the 2003-2014 average for those dates, according to data from the Multiscale Ultrahigh Resolution Sea Surface Temperature (MUR SST) project. The MUR SST project is a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory effort that blends measurements of sea surface temperatures from multiple NASA, NOAA, and international satellites, as well as ship and buoy observations.
In preparation for the storm, authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for all of Louisiana’s Cameron Parish, and urged residents outside the levee system in other southern parishes to evacuate. Forecasters expect a storm surge of 5 to 10 feet (1.5 to 3 meters) and major flooding along the Louisiana coast near Vermilion Bay. National Hurricane Center forecasts indicated a 36 percent chance of sustained hurricane-force winds of 74 miles (119 kilometers) per hour or higher in Morgan City. Heavy rains of 4 to 8 inches (100 to 200 millimeters) are expected along a large swath of the Gulf Coast.
NASA’s Disasters Program has been activated in response to Hurricane Francine, supporting stakeholders such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). As new information becomes available, the team will be posting maps and data products on its open-access mapping portal.

Storm Surge Barriers Market: Global Demand Analysis & Opportunity Outlook 2035
Research Nester’s recent market research analysis on “Storm Surge Barriers Market: Global Demand Analysis & Opportunity Outlook 2035” delivers a detailed competitors analysis and a detailed overview of the global storm surge barriers market in terms of market segmentation by system type, gate type, construction type, structure type, and by region.
Rising Prevalence in Severe Weather to Boost the Growth of the Global Storm Surge Barriers Market
The global storm surge barriers market is estimated to grow on account of rising prevalence in severe weather. A rise in the world's average temperature is associated with significant changes in weather patterns. Scientific research indicates that human-induced climate change may increase the frequency or intensity of extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, typhoons, and other large storms. Another aspect affecting storm surges is atmospheric pressure. Therefore, the likelihood of damage could be decreased by the installation of storm surge barriers.
Additionally, the number of tourists visiting coastal regions has increased. Along the shore, several of the popular tourist attractions are at risk of flooding and storm surges. Because protecting these areas may help to ensure visitor safety and maintain the destination's allure, the tourist industry presents a substantial market opportunity for storm surge barriers.
Request Report Sample@
Some of the major growth factors and challenges that are associated with the growth of the global storm surge barriers market are:
By keeping storm surges from entering low-lying estuarine areas, storm surge barriers and closure dams offer excellent protection against coastal flooding. Although employing a closure dam to permanently seal off the estuary mouth would produce the same result, using a mobile barrier allows rivers to remain open under normal circumstances. Moreover, when river levels are high or, in the case of movable barriers, if the defense is closed for a longer period of time, flooding may occur on the landward side of the barriers for both surge barriers and closure dams. Water collects there as the barrier restricts further river flow, causing flooding on the landward side of the barrier.
By gate type, the market for storm surge barriers is segmented into flap gates, sector gates, vertical lifting gates, inflatable rubber gates, barge gates, and rotary segment gates. Out of these segments, the vertical lifting gates are anticipated to generate the highest revenue by the end of 2035. However, the sector gates segment is also poised to grow. These gates are frequently employed for sea locks at marina entrances where passage through the lock is necessary under the broadest tidal range. Furthermore, with a complete differential head, these gates are capable of opening or closing. Additionally, it could work with water loads coming from either side. Therefore, this segment is also anticipated to grow.
By region, the Asia Pacific storm surge barriers market is estimated to grow over the forecast period. The market growth in this region could be attributed to the number of floods in countries such as Japan, Thailand, and China. Moreover, growing public knowledge of the major benefits of installing flood barriers among residents of coastal areas will expand the market's potential in this region. Additionally, the growth of the market in Asia Pacific will be facilitated by governments encouraging the spike in construction projects

Thousands evacuated as Philippines warns of possible flooding, landslides from Typhoon Mawar
Mawar tore through Guam last week as the strongest typhoon to hit the U.S. Pacific territory in over two decades, flipping cars, tearing off roofs and knocking down power.
MANILA: Philippine officials began evacuating thousands of villagers, shut down schools and offices and imposed a no-sail ban Monday as Typhoon Mawar approached the country’s northern provinces a week after battering the U.S. territory of Guam.
The typhoon is packing maximum sustained winds of 155 kpm (96 mph) and gusts of up to 190 kph (118 mph) but is forecast to spare the mountainous region a direct hit. Current projections show the typhoon veering northeast toward Taiwan or southern Japan.
Although it’s expected to slow down considerably, authorities warned of dangerous tidal surges, flash floods and landslides as it blows past the northernmost province of Batanes from Tuesday to Wednesday. Disaster-preparedness officials said the typhoon’s course could change abruptly and there was no room for complacency.
“Even if the sun is up, the weather is so unpredictable nowadays and could change anytime so we should always stay on the side of safety,” Assistant Secretary Raffy Alejandro of the Office of Civil Defense told The Associated Press. “We’re talking here of potential threats to lives.”
Mawar tore through Guam last week as the strongest typhoon to hit the U.S. Pacific territory in over two decades, flipping cars, tearing off roofs and knocking down power.
“These typhoons, earthquakes and natural calamities have been a part of our lives,” Batanes Vice Gov. Ignacio Villa told the AP by telephone. “We cannot afford not to prepare because that would potentially mean the loss of lives and major damage.”
Army troops, police, firefighters and volunteer groups were standing by for search and rescue operations in northern provinces and more than a million food packs have been prepared for any contingency, officials said.
More than 4,800 people have been evacuated to emergency shelters in Cagayan, Batanes and other provinces, Alejandro said. He added that the number of the displaced was expected to rise given the precautionary evacuations that were underway Monday in flood- and landslide-prone regions.
Classes and office work, except those involved in disaster-preparedness, have been suspended in most of Cagayan and Batanes provinces, where occasional downpours and gusty wind were reported Sunday night. Flights to and from the provinces have been canceled and fishing and passenger vessels prohibited from sailing.
In at least one province, officials imposed a liquor ban.
Villa said the local government lent ropes to villagers living in high-risk communities to strengthen their houses as the typhoon approached.
About 20 typhoons and storms each year batter the Philippine archipelago, which also lies on seismic faults where volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur, making the Southeast Asian nation one of the world’s most disaster-prone.
In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan left more than 7,300 people dead or missing, flattened entire villages, swept ships inland, demolished about a million shanties and houses and displaced more than 5 million in one of the country’s poorest regions in the central Philippines.
