Rating Project: Eden's Garden ships (spoilers for CH1)

Disclaimer: Ships are meant to be fun and I find the Eden's Garden cast to be very shippable, so any ship that does not involve Toshiko is fine in my books!

Damon x Eva (Evamon): I don't care as much for them romantically as I do platonically, but Damon's comments about Eva tear my soul apart. Perhaps under different circumstances, their relationship could have evolved. 6.5-7/10

Damon x Desmond (Maithall): Honestly I love these two! Damon sees Desmond as "the only other normal person here" and their interactions could be interperted as Damon having a little bit of a crush on him ("Desmond's remarkable charm", etc. etc.). Not my no. 1 ship for either of him, but it's my og ship and I hope their dynamic evolves more! 8.5/10

Diana x Eva (Diava/Evana): On one hand... toxic yuri. On the other... not a fan. Nope. 2/10

Wolfgang x Grace (Wolfgrace): I like them, I wish we could have seen more of them. I think they are the first pairing I shipped when I played the prologue. Their personalities were total opposites in a way that made them compatible. I'm probably going to ship them more in the next chapter tbh, when I see how Grace is dealing with it. 8/10

Desmond x Ulysses: I've seen the ship exclusively on tiktok. Whilst I personally aren't too crazy about it, I can't deny it's cute! 6.8/10

Damon x Kai (Kaimon): My OTP, it's one of the most popular ships in the fandom for a reason (though I do feel basic about it hehe). I love them so so much!!! 28/10

Mark x Jett (What's their ship name??): They are so silly, though I can't tell if Mark is enjoying the company or not... Hm. 7/10

Wenona x Ulysses (Wenysses? Ulynona?): Didn't expect them, but they are a welcome surprise none the less!! I'm glad to see Wenona interacting positively with another character. I don't know if I prefer them as romantic or platonic, but I enjoy their pairing nonetheless! 7.5/10

Desmond x Eloise (Desloise): My second favourite ship from the game!! I love these two so so much, their characters fit together so seamlessly, like a glove to a hand!! 10/10

do you think that, during her execution, when the Cara dummy's hand was extended to Eva, she saw Cara as Diana. like how Wolfgang saw Diana as his mother. do you think that she saw "Diana", the girl she framed, the girl who had only ever been kind to her, the girl who Eva pushed away as hard as she could, extend her hand out to her. and thought that Diana had given her a second chance despite everything .

I think I realized why the Project Eden's Garden execution affected me more than the Danganronpa executions.

It's the emotion.

Looking back, the Danganronpa executions don't have a lot of emotion. Sure, you're horrified but the expressions are kinda...

Leon is freaking out but you only get glimpses of his face once the execution starts going. I always thought that dizzy expression on Mondo's face was goofy. Celeste had a smile on her face and you don't see her when she actually dies. I can't tell what expression Alter Ego has cause the screen is too small and obscured by the carnage. Kyoko and Naegi are probably the most emotion we get in an execution cause the focus is on their expressions. Junko is... Junko.

Teruteru's expressions are goofy by default and the execution is no exception. Peko starts to cry before her execution but acts calm (for lack of a better word) during it. Mikan is... Mikan. Gundham faces his death head on with a smile. Chiaki tries to escape but ends up waiting quietly.

Kaede gets silly dizzy eyes. Kirumi lets out a scream (and she is actually my favorite execution to describe to people who don't know the series). Shinguuji is another one who gets a lot of focus on his expression. We do not talk about Gonta's execution. Kaito died with a smile on his face. Kiibo went out in a blaze of glory. And Tsumugi gave everyone a final wave goodbye.

What's one thing that didn't show up? Crying. We didn't see anyone cry as they died. But that's what we get in Eden's Garden. The culprit is crying as the execution continues. There's no determined expression, there's a scared teenaged crying, probably still begging to live. We just can't hear them over the music. There's no cutaway from their face. Instead we see the last look of horror on their face as they take the final fall.

The execution just feels so much more visceral than Danganronpa. This isn't an Ultimate trying to face death with dignity only to get that chance ripped away by a stuffed bear. This is a scared child (I'm 31 they're all children to me) who was never given a chance at dignity in the first place.

grace & eloise and instant versus delayed gratification

i would really love to chat about the eloise and grace parallels actually because i VERRYYYY strongly think something is gonna happen between those two at SOME point. something bad is gonna happen i know this in my heart and soul. here is my prediction/prologue and chapter 1 analysis :)

i think one of the biggest parallels between these two is their approach to "winning the game".

grace is very brash and outspoken. she is characterised as being a ruthless competitor who will cut ties with anybody in order to make it to the top. we see in the prologue she REPEATEDLY pushes boundaries in order to get out of this killing game, even when it hurts her (trying to get the tozu trinket off until it shocks her, not being compliant during trial until she again gets shocked, getting shot at for fighting, etc). grace has an initial advantage against many others-- her strength-- and throws it all out at the gate in an effort to establish herself as being on top.

golf is about winning in as little shots as possible, and while it is kinda funny that a sport typically associated with being quiet and boring has given us an extremely abrasive ultimate, it makes a LOT of sense in regards to grace's mentality. grace is not there to wait! she is there to gain the immediate lead-- she is very used to the SHORT game.

and i think we can all tell that this isn't working out for her LMFAO. the game is still GOING. grace is doing what she knows in order to protect herself, and it is repeatedly FAILING. rabbits symbolise innocence/VULNERABILITY, which i really think applies to grace in a way she would hate, because her method of attack has left her repeatedly more and more helpless. she isnt making friends (and when she sort of was he DIED), and her brashness from the very beginning has left her in a TERRIBLE position (theres damon parallels but that is a WHOLE other essay). she played for instant gratification and will have to reap the consequences of that failing for a while.

eloise is a patient, analytical player. she is able to discern that she is in this game for the long haul, not in it for a short, brief period, which means her approach to survival comes from a perspective of patience. i believe she tells damon how she is about to act in this killing game from the very beginning. in fact, she basically lays out how her AND grace are about to act:

she knows when to back down, she knows that even if she loses the battle she can still win the war. eloise is a very quiet person, but in no way does that make her defenceless-- she is VERY capable of taking others down, and even TELLS damon this during her first FTE, but she has the foresight to understand not to make the first move. she tells damon specifically that if he attacks first, she will fight back.

because of this, most of what we see from eloise is more reserved and timid. she hides from others when she gets emotional as to not reveal that weakness, as seen in her first introduction. she apologises often, even during trials when bringing up valid questions. she relents to grace and hands over her blackmail, even when she is being cornered and yelled at. i believe WHOLEHEARTEDLY that this blackmail has set the tone of their relationship moving forward (and desmond too, since he and eloise are being pushed together, and he was ready to jump to eloise's defence during the blackmail scene).

grace mentions that eloise had been "giving her the side-eye" ever since the blackmail was announced, and regardless of whether or not that was grace being paranoid or eloise reading something that damaged her opinion of grace, they antagonise each other. grace is very obvious with her antagonism, however. it is brash and open. she calls eloise names, uses intimidation, all tactics that again rely on her strength and that "short game" method she is so used to.

but i believe eloise's antagonism is overall the far more effective kind, and that it has already begun taking form in a very subtle way. she lets grace take her blackmail, and maintains her solid reputation with the others while making grace look mean and, worse, desperate. and because eloise has maintained her reputation she is able to very subtly undermine grace in a way grace just cant. eloise holds her ground during investigation when she needs to get into wolfgang's room, a conversation likely motivated by the fact she (and desmond, i strongly believe eloise told him) knows grace's blackmail and is able to hang that over her head. eloise lines up the shot, and desmond fires by telling grace how suspicious it is she is acting so defensive if there is nothing for her to hide.

and then, during the trial, eloise is the first person to accuse grace. she tells everybody how strangely she acted during the investigation and steers the conversation towards her in a very subtle manner, after which desmond primarily takes over to explain why the class shouldnt be trusting grace. again, eloise lines up the shot, and desmond fires.

eloise was unaware she had an alibi and knew when to back down, but the damage had already been done against grace, even if it's miniscule. it backed grace into an immediate corner, a very helpless position she is ALREADY proven to be very agitated by, and made her look untrustworthy. eloise is able to knock grace prone from the very beginning and comes out of the situation clean, because she chooses her words carefully and never comes across as vindictive. grace, who can only do so much, swears and spits at eloise for the accusation, ultimately making her look like the cruel one.

grace is used to winning in as little shots as possible, and eloise knows that winning requires patience. i really do think this blackmail is going to lead the dynamic between these two for the rest of the game. i think eloise is at the very least in it for the long haul in this killing game, and she is going to prove to be a capable and dangerous competitor. because eventually grace is going to run out of steam, have NO footing when it comes to the rest of the class, and will start losing the battles when it really matters. eloise has the hindsight to know grace will eventually wear herself out.

and even though this essay isnt as much about desmond as it is grace and eloise, i think he will have a very important part to play in this dynamic. i think this line:

might hold a bit more wait to it than what it seems. grace and eloise have ultimate talents that seemingly tie into their values and personalities quite well, it makes sense for this to also apply to desmond. eloise wears her competitors out by playing the long game, and once theyre stationary, that's when desmond fires.

While I feel this is a very surface level observation, not even really an analysis of any sort, I think what really draws me in either DianEva as a dynamic is how little there is to go off of in a sense? What’s so interesting is the fact it’s almost entirely one-sided on Diana’s part. Eva and Diana parallel Damon and Kai, but the thing whereas Damon is slowly beginning to be more trusting and value his fellow ultimates more, Eva is so preoccupied with her insecurity and the assumption that all her peers are against her. Diana so badly wanted to be there for Eva, to not be like everyone else and actually include her in the group, to be her friend, someone she can be herself around. And yet Eva was too closed off, the shell she hid herself behind was too thick, too dense to realize and accept Diana's earnest attempts at companionship. I think what's so interesting about it all is their dynamic is very much a what if, not even strictly because Eva is dead, because I feel even if she didn't die there would still be this distance between them, it's really interesting to think what if Diana finally broke that shell of hers, what if they actually got to have a reciprocated connection...

Here's my theory

Kai is going to be our investigation assistant going forward now that Eva is dead

"but he was resistant to investigating in both the prologue and chapter 1!" I hear you saying

But with how much Kai and Damon bonded in chapter 1 (no matter how unwillingly it happened, they still *bonded*), Damon is going to need someone he trusts, no matter how much he denies it, the first person he trusts *throws him under the bus for her murder and is then brutally executed herself*, humans are very social creatures, we will littrally go crazy if we don't trust people, I know Kai is no kyoko in the smarts department, but he isn't *dumb* (remember when he told Damon that the potential killer who ran by the closet took off their shoes so that they wouldn't be able to tell the killer because of everyone wearing different shoes? Damon didn't come up with that! Kai did! And you need *some* smarts to be a content creator)

It's like he's going to be the Watson to Damon's Sherlock Holmes, someone who Damon can tell his thought process to, to explain it to the audience how he reached his conclusion, but smart by themselves

Kai was WAY too prevalent in chapter one for him to go back to a background character

I'll tell you what I think: I think great minds think alike because this is *exactly* what I think will happen (as you'll see in my analysis).

Describing the relationship between Damon and Kai in regards to the cases as Sherlock and Watson is literally perfect.

The first part of my analysis is actually about every instance something Kai has said has contradicted the information we've been given about him!! I saw his FTE and was so surprised at how casually that was revealed because it feels so important?!

The second part thus far has been about his contribution in the trials, so you can bet I took notice of the shoe thing!!

Overall I'm hoping we're both on the right track because I would love for Kai to be the support (and from a writing standpoint it does make sense). I also hope that you'll enjoy my analysis on him, when it does come out (hopefully soon!!).
