Happy WBW! I know it's summer, but we're going back to school! What does the education system look like in your world? Is it standardized or trade based? Required or for certain people only?
Public school is available, however, time is seen as a privilege to have an excess of. Going to school for a whole day is a huge investment of time. Most kids are home schooled or only go for half days because of this.
In cities where there are libraries, librarians will travel with a bag of books to different central areas of the city and read allowed for hours. Children who are too young for school and parents might stay for the whole reading, but school age children and workers will stop by for fifteen minutes to two hours for entertainment.
Stories are seen as a community event because of this, so even in towns with no libraries, those who know how to read will often spend evenings reading what few books they have aloud.

Finally have things in order, looking forward to the next few months.
Once I finish my queue, It’s gonna be three months of ME art and that just feels good. It feels good, man.
Anyways, prepare to see more of this dour girl. This is Shree. Silly name right? Well, you’ll eventually find out why folks call her that, but for now I’ll suffice by saying she’s one of the Tillamook tribe in a post apocalyptic world.
Current thundercaller, she’s what you could consider the main POV of a multiple POV character story/comic.
On a pilgrimage to The Great Divide to earn the blessing of her ancestors and receive the mantle of her calling, she comes across wreckage along the coastline and encounters what she comes to believe is her generation’s manifestation of mimlos-whale...
YOU WON’T BELIEVE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT-- lmao. I’m sorry. That got click-baity. At any rate. This is a vast improvement over the last time I designed her. God bless improvement.

Scientists estimate up to 14% of emissions from agriculture in 2050 could be avoided by managing food use and distribution better
Reducing food waste around the world would help curb emissions of planet-warming gases, lessening some of the impacts of climate change such as more extreme weather and rising seas, scientists said on Thursday.
Up to 14% of emissions from agriculture in 2050 could be avoided by managing food use and distribution better, according to a new study from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).
“Agriculture is a major driver of climate change, accounting for more than 20% of overall global greenhouse gas emissions in 2010,” said co-author Prajal Pradhan.
“Avoiding food loss and waste would therefore avoid unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions and help mitigate climate change.”
Between 30 and 40% of food produced around the world is never eaten, because it is spoiled after harvest and during transportation, or thrown away by shops and consumers.
The share of food wasted is expected to increase drastically if emerging economies like China and India adopt western food habits, including a shift to eating more meat, the researchers warned.
Richer countries tend to consume more food than is healthy or simply waste it, they noted.
As poorer countries develop and the world’s population grows, emissions associated with food waste could soar from 0.5 gigatonnes (GT) of carbon dioxide equivalent per year to between 1.9 and 2.5 GT annually by mid-century, showed the study published in the Environmental Science & Technology journal.
It is widely argued that cutting food waste and distributing the world’s surplus food where it is needed could help tackle hunger in places that do not have enough - especially given that land to expand farming is limited.
Almost half of the world's food thrown away, report finds

But Jürgen Kropp, another of the study’s co-authors and PIK’s head of climate change and development, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation the potential for food waste curbs to reduce emissions should be given more attention.
“It is not a strategy of governments at the moment,” he said.
The researchers analysed food requirements in the past and for different future scenarios.
They found that while global average food demand per person remains almost constant, in the last five decades food availability has rapidly increased - hiking the emissions related to growing surplus food by more than 300%.
The paper did not look at how food waste could be shrunk, but initiatives to tackle the problem are already on the rise in both developed and developing countries.

In January, for example, 30 company heads, government ministers, and executives with foundations, research groups and charities launched a coalition to work towards cutting food waste by half and reducing food loss significantly by 2030.
The aims are in line with the new global development goals that took effect this year.
“Champions 12.3” - named after the food-waste goal number - includes the bosses of Tesco, Nestle, Rabobank, Unilever, Oxfam America, WWF International and the Rockefeller Foundation.
Andrew Steer, another coalition member who heads the World Resources Institute, noted then that if food loss and waste were a country, it would be the third largest greenhouse gas emitter in the world.
“Food loss and waste hurts people, costs money and harms the planet,” he said in a statement. “Cutting (it) is a no-brainer.”

Happy STS! If you had to throw one of your characters into another world, which one would you choose? Would they thrive or hate it?
hmmm...
I think I'd send Jordan. I think it'd be cool to see her in a post apocalypse setting. Jordan is from a fantasy world so seeing her in post apocalypse would show off her skills while also being a new and weird challenge for her. She's good with a crossbow and is a good scavenger/finder. She'd hate it. She'd be miserable being alone in a place so empty. So while she'd be able to have a good enough life for herself, she wouldn't be happy until she ran into anyone else who was still around.

Locations Best Practices: Prep & Sensitive Landscapes
There are a number of ways to conserve resources and protect the environment when shooting on location. Here’s a list specifically related to preparing for the shoot:
Try to make all signage out of recycled or recyclable materials.
Use only elastic bands or string to hang signs on trees – never staples, thumbtacks or tape, all of which can severely damage trees.
Protect interior locations with corrugated cardboard made with post-consumer recycled content. When available, consider using reusable, cut-to-size, plastic mats.
When shooting in sensitive or pristine landscapes, it’s important to take extra measures to ensure minimal disruption to the natural environment.
Contain all vehicle and foot traffic within the production vicinity, and cordon off any areas with particularly sensitive vegetation or wildlife.
Ensure that all film-related activities are carefully managed to prevent damage to the landscape.
Reinstate any land or vegetation that are damaged as a result of production activities.
Scan the area thoroughly before leaving to ensure that nothing is left behind and that the area reflects its pre-production condition.
Stay tuned for more tips and hints on how to green your production, pre through post.

Project Green: Go Baby Grass, Go!
It has been an honor to sponsor The Home Depot Garden Club over the past two months. I feel truly blessed to have them finance and support my lawn project. As always, the words, pictures and video (!!!!) in this post are solely mine.
So, let's summarize what Alex and I have been up to in our front yard. Here goes it then....
PROJECT GREEN from Tina Byland on Vimeo.
Aw. That was fun, right? I will be suggesting Baci and Misha for best supporting actor and actress to The Academy this year. I told them to start learning English so they could give their acceptance speeches when the time comes.
This has been an education. We knew our lawn was bad. In fact, we knew it was terribly bad. The truth is, we had no clue where to start. We're still learning, for sure. I mean, you saw me using the seed spreader... that thing has a (very fun) learning curve.
So I thought I'd share with you the little things we know for certain on the other side of this project:
* Weed killer's are fantastic. We used this one. But you're still going to have to rake them out. And that still stinks. Bigtime.
* Fertilizer is also fantastic, but make sure not to overdo it. Many of you have been clued into our other lawn project via instagram. We dug up half of our front lawn last week and it got a bit muddy in the process. When went back to The Home Depot to pick up some more seed to lay down, we were wise enough to realize that this time we shouldn't get another bag that included fertilizer. Our lawn already had fertilizer in it. We actually ended up buying a bag of Scotts Turf Builder Sunny Mix. You guys. This seed is baby blue!!!
* If you're really nice to mother nature, she'll give you rain every day for two whole weeks. Or just about. We've been extremely lucky with the weather since planting our seed. Especially because our spicket sprung a leak last weekend. How do we know, you might ask? Well, when I went to water our lawn, Alex went inside to see water gushing through the drywall on the other side of the wall! So, since then, it's been either borrowing our neighbor's hose (thank goodness for living in a townhouse) or using my watering can to keep the grass wet. But, seriously, never underestimate keeping your soil and seed wet. This happens to be key. And, as a side note, the plumber is coming next week.
* Like everything else, growing grass requires patience. I peeked out our bedroom window to see if our grass was growing every single morning. People say it takes about ten days. And it does. Now we have baby sprouts. They're adorable.
So, there you have it. We've come a long way on this epic journey but it's not over yet. We're sort of at that point in The Lord of The Rings where Gollum falls into the Crack of Doom and you think the movie's about over and then it goes on for another hour. Yeah. We're like "done" but not really done. Once this week's grass starts sprouting up, we'll have a better idea of where our patches still lie and we're going to have to fix those up. But, overall, I'm confident in saying that we sure look better than before!
Thanks again to The Home Depot for providing us with this amazing opportunity. It's been fun.

Stuck
All my projects are vaguely terrifying at the moment. The one nicknamed "bubbles" (a series of pieces to which the one I gave my mom for Christmas belongs) has to be reconceptualised because riveting doesn't prevent inclusions of water and dust ; but putting the pieces in a setting doesn't work either, really. And those are the only two options I can think of. I'm not ready to abandon this idea - when it does work out, occasionally, it just looks too awesome - but I also don't know how to proceed.
And the project nicknamed "green" isn't really progressing as I wanted, either. Having problems finding pleasing colour combinations; also still don't know how to attach the metal/acrylic elements.
