I am currently in the first stages of a new writing project. It will be historical fiction set during WWII. Any advice you can offer on writing engaging and compelling fictional characters while staying true to that period of history would be greatly appreciated.
Creating Engaging Historical Characters
There's this tendency to think of people in the past as being completely foreign beings to us, but here's the thing... they weren't that different. Sure, their worlds were different. The societal rules, roles, and expectations were different. They had different technology and different opportunities, but so many of the things were the same. They still loved their families but fought with their siblings and pushed back against parental boundaries. They didn't want to do their chores or learn the things they were supposed to learn, but they did it anyway because they didn't want to get in trouble. They wanted to spend time with their friends, gossip about love interests, enjoy hobbies, and do the things they thought were fun. They wanted to tell stories and hear stories, and laugh, and try new things. They wanted to listen to music and dance and socialize. They wanted to dream about their future, and sometimes they stressed about it. They had their own "celebrity" role models, their own trends, their own versions of "social media" (even if it was writing letters or hanging out in a tavern), and they looked forward to a good party as much as most of us do. Except for the introverts. They preferred to stay home with their cats then just as we do now. You get my point, though. People in the past weren't that different from us.
So... writing engaging and compelling characters living during World War II is no different from writing engaging and compelling characters who live now, or in 1981, 1802, 1577, or 1112... Just write people. Research what their world was like... what societal rules governed their behavior, what their daily lives were like, what their love lives were like, what they did for fun, who and what captivated their interest, what they wore and how they styled their hair, what they liked to eat and drink, what social occasions looked like... and then remember that just as we push against the boundaries of our own world now, so did people in every point in history. If you asked someone to describe the fashion of the 2020s, they would describe specific clothing styles, but that doesn't mean people aren't wearing other things, too. If you asked someone to describe the popular music or dances of today, they'd name specific music styles, artists, or dance styles, but that doesn't mean everyone listens to that style of music, those artists, or dances in that style. There are always people on the fringe, always people doing other things. So just keep that in mind.
Happy researching and writing!

Finished another chapter in my "ZoSan Sexcapades across the Grand Line" huehuehue
This one's just short & sweet & smutty
Words: 1577
Warnings: Explicit content, consensual somnophilia
=============
While Zoro slept, Sanji took a moment to relax with one last cigarette for the evening. He opened the window and leaned against the frame, enjoying the cool night breeze on his bare skin. But as the cigarette burned down, the air began to feel more chilling than refreshing. Sanji took one last, long drag before snuffing the embers. He closed the window and made his way back to the bed and comfortably settled in beside his crewmate.

Writing progress: 1577 words into chapter 23 of my fanfiction project, Ashen Exile.
I've only been working on this chapter for just over a month.
Or, more accurately, I've had 200 words written for about a month, and I've done the rest of the progress today.
Why am I like this? Why can't I just write consistently, and not in fitful, feverish bursts while it feels like my neck is about to explode?

Las cárceles del Palacio Ducal
The Ducal Palace Prisons
Le prigioni di Palazzo Ducale

Photo: perspective view of the Prisons in the Doge's Palace in Venice by Angelo Gambini
The construction of the bridge took place in the early years of the XVII Century, at the same time as the renovation of the prisons of the Doge's Palace in Venice, which took place following the great fire that devastated the palace in 1577. The project envisaged the definitive removal of the prisons from the ground floor of the Doge's Palace, and their connection to the latter by means of a bridge. The structure was conceived as a hanging walkway, completely enclosed to prevent convicts from escaping.
From Bridge to Prison
Indoors the space consists of two narrow corridors separated by a thick wall, the first leading to the Magistrates' Room, while the second to the Avogadria Room and the Locutorio.
A Service staircase then led to the old prisons inside the Doge's Palace, which did not fall into disuse following the construction of the New Prisons, as evidenced by the story ''Storia della mia fuga dai Piombi'' by the famous writer Giacomo Casanova, who in 1756 was the only one to succeed in escaping from Venetian prisons.
The old detention cells - known as the Pozzi e Piombi - were in fact located in the attic and basement of the Doge's Palace floor in cramped and unlivable spaces, which is why it was decided to construct a new building of modern architectural conception located on the opposite bank of the Rio di Palazzo. It is one of the first buildings in the world designed with the specific function of prison.

I'm really interested in Cai's story, and I love whenever you post art of xem -- xe has a really cool design! Could you tell us more about the "unique living style" of Point Hibernation that xe's writing about?
I must thank you for asking a world building question, gave me something fun to think about on my morning walk~
The Point Hibernation plot idea and some doodles of it can be found via these links.
As a preface, I should say that all the various stories I come up with (culinary emissary, the bakery comic, etc.) all exist separate from each other. So instead of being a restaurant reviewer, in this story Cai is a well credited journalist!
The planet designated Brak-1577-b has been of some interest to researchers (in particular, intergalactic archaeologists) for a couple of centuries now. At some point in the planet’s history, it’s climate dropped to freezing temperatures, and in the process managed to preserve artefacts dating back thousands of years. Naturally, this gained Brak B a lot of intrigue in the form of excavations and research projects. Funding saw the establishment of several outposts for human habitation (the main outpost being known as ‘point hibernation’) with all the latest technology and equipment, which was essential for braving the frigid temperatures.
That was all about 100 years ago though. Brak B’s surface was explored, a few acclaimed papers were written on the findings, and interest moved on to other discoveries and projects. These days, funding for studies on Brak B is almost non existent. However, research does still continue on the planet, mostly by groups made up of particularly dedicated individuals who believe that Brak B still has knowledge to offer them.
Of course, these groups face the challenges posed by a lack of funding. Their equipment has barely been updated since the height of Brak B’s popularity decades ago, and as such, the team have come up with some… creative, work arounds.
The most prominent of these being the problem of Brak B’s famous freezing temperatures. Colloquially dubbed ‘Brak’s Bite’, the cold has a habit of… seeping into your bones. Heating for a sub zero outpost isn’t cheap, and neither is your modern day, high tech insulation suits. They do have a lot of food, though…
Eventually, researchers worked out a fairly reasonable plan for keeping themselves well insulated during a term on their outpost. They would make sure to have at least one dietician on staff at all times, whose job it would be to make sure that the crew were following a set diet and activity regime to keep them above a certain body fat threshold.
To put it bluntly, when you start a rotation on Brak B, you are required to get fat.
#I didn’t even talk about Cai I’m so sorry#I got pulled into the world building pit#the pit that makes me fabricate an overly complex explanation for why my characters need to gain weight#point hibernation#weight gain

A basic timeline is now live on the blog! It can be found at /MEMORIA . It is Gaius biased and Garlean heavy, ending at the conclusion of ARR. Some dates given are estimates. Since I do not think my theme is very mobile friendly, a text-only version will be below the cut. Timeline below contains spoilers for 1.0 and ARR's questline.
1513 - Solus zos Galvus establishes the Garlean Empire.
1521 - Gaius Baelsar is born. Garlemald conquers Othard and Ilsebard, and encounter their first primal threat.
1552 - Garlemald takes over Doma.
1557 - After seeding unrest, Gaius Baelsar, now a Legatus, takes Ala Mhigo. Sharlayans send ambassadors to Garlemald to forge a peace treaty after getting wind of the state of Ala Mhigo. The negotiations bear no fruit; Sharlay begin plans to evacuate their Dravanian settlement.
1562 - Garleans move to take over Mor Dhona, unaware of the dragon that slumbered there: Midgardsormr. Airships and Dravanian hordes clashed; Midgardsormr downed Agrius, sinking it into Silvertear Lake, shortly before the ship exploded, killing the dreadwyrm and causing irrepairable damage to the area.
The Bozja Citadel in Garlemald begins to experiment with the Allagan Lunar Transmitter. As the lesser moon, Dalamud, begins to glow, the Transmitter explodes, killing Midas nan Garlond. Cid nan Garlond defects Garlemald shortly after.
Shortly after, Emperor Solus grants Nael van Darnus approval to use Project Meteor on Eorzea against the rising Primal threat. Varis yae Galvus, Solus's grandson, and Gaius van Baelsar oppose the use of the plan, and both men work to undermine it's development.
Following Agrius's destruction, Gaius van Baelsar retreats to Ala Mhigo, and Garlemald at large postpones it's invasion of Eorzea. The decade is dubbed "The Age of Calm", from 1562 - 1572.
1562 - 1572: Age of Calm
The beginning of the Seventh Umbral Era: The Calamity
1572 - Nael van Darnus and her legion build Castrum Novum in Mor Dhona. It houses the Lunar Transmitter and intends to call Dalamud down from beside the greater moon. While adventurers are able to destroy the transmitter, Dalamud is still summoned via Meteor: Nael is slaughtered in the process.
Dalamud continues to fall. As the red moon grows in the sky, The Battle of Carteneau commences: the Grand Companies of Eorzea battle Nael van Darnus's Legion. During the crux of the battle, the moon splits, releasing it's captive: Bahamut.
Following a failed summon of the Twelve, an Archon known as Louisoix Levellieur teleports surviving adventurers five years into the future. Louisoix, aided by prayer and released aether, transforms into a primal: the Phoenix. The bird tears Bahamut into pieces and saves Eorzea from annihilation. Bahamut's heart sinks into the core of Hydaelyn and claims what is left of Louisoix's spirit.
1575 - Gaius van Baelsar, admist the chaos and rebuilding effort following the Calamity, constructs outposts throughout Eorzea for his XIVth Legion. He renamed Castrum Novum to Castrum Centri, and sets up Castrum Meridianum.
The Ultima Weapon is unveiled in Ala Mhigo by Lahabrea, an Ascian. After forging an alliance with the Ascians, Gaius sets his sights on a new route to conquer Eorzea.
A Realm Reborn
1577 - Livia sas Junius, tribunus of Gaius's XIV Legion, leads a surprise attack on the Waking Sands. She kills most within, kidnapping Minfilia Warde, Urianger Augurelt, Papalymo Totolymo, and Tataru Taru. Taken back to Castrum Centri, Minfilia is beaten and interrogated on the Echo's properties and their ability to resist tempering. All captives survive and are rescued by the remaining Scions and the newly titled Warrior of Light.
Gaius van Baelsar, upon Garuda's summoning, takes advantage of the primal's nature and taunts the Lady of the Vortex. Outraged, she calls forth both Ifrit and Titan by way of torturing their beastly followers. In one fell swoop, Gaius absorbs all three primal's aether, storing it within the Ultima Weapon. He offers the Alliance an ultimatium: surrender, or perish.
The Scions of the Seventh Dawn persuade the Grand Companies of Eorzea to stand against Gaius van Baelsar, much like they had Nael van Darnus five summers past. They prepare their attack, titled Operation Archon.
Gaius van Baelsar gives Rhitahtyn sas Arvina command of Cape Westwind. He is felled by the Warrior of Light shortly after, as Operation Archon saw Cape Westwind as an easy target to disrupt communications among the Imperial forces.
Livia sas Junis is slaughtered as the Eorzean Alliance pushes into Castrum Meridianum.
Gaius van Baelsar, piloting the Ultima Weapon, stations himself in the Praetorium. Despite multiple attempts to bring the Warrior of Light onto his side, they fail to see reason. As each primal's aether is ripped from the Weapon by the aid of Hydaelyn, the Ultima Weapon begins to break down. Lahabrea activates the core of the Ultima Weapon: the Heart of Sabik, unleashing a spell with the same devestating results as Meteor. Gaius is thrown fron the machina and killed as the Praetorium crumbles.
#ⅩⅣ tertius oculus ( hcs. )#this is entirely canon compliant with the exception of the year 1575. i picked a year between the age of calm + 2.0 for those events to hap#happen* since the timeline on the wiki wasn't specific#but. yes. this took. over an hour

Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) Germany
Self Portrait (1623) oil on canvas 91.3x70.8cm
National Gallery of Australia, Canberra
Lucina Ward, based on the writings of David Jaffé
In his Self-portrait, the 45-year-old Peter Paul Rubens portrays himself as a man of the world: he wears full court dress, emphasising his status as a successful painter, courtier, diplomat and gentleman of Antwerp. The painting is a triumph of naturalism. The development of oil paint in Northern Europe in the fifteenth century meant that artists were able to obtain greater control over colour and tone. Rubens fuses the realistic tradition of Flemish painting with the imaginative freedom and classical themes of the Italian Renaissance. In this Self-portrait, Rubens’ high-keyed skin tones are contrasted against a dramatic, almost theatrical backdrop – the artist’s quizzical stare seems to acknowledge the artifice of painting.
It was an ancient custom for humanists, scholars and poets to receive gold chains in recognition of their intellectual pursuits. During the sixteenth century, the chain became the supreme sign of the artist’s newly elevated status, a signal that painters had risen above craftsmen, and increasingly these coveted tokens of esteem were incorporated
into self-portraits. Throughout the seventeenth century artists continued to receive chains, mostly from noble patrons; Rubens was so honoured by Archduke Ferdinand and Archduchess Isabella in 1609 when he accepted their appointment as court painter.
Rubens painted two self-portraits in 1623. One, on panel, was sent on request to Charles, Prince of Wales (later Charles I of England), and is today at Windsor Castle. The second self-portrait, an almost identical composition, was sent to Rubens’ friend, the scholar and lawyer Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc (1580–1637). Rubens wears a chain in both portraits. The chain, along with his pose and many other details in the paintings, were reproduced in the 1630 engraving by Paulus Ponius to celebrate Rubens’ diplomatic success as a secretary to Philip IV’s Privy Council. While the Windsor Self-portrait can be at least partially explained by Rubens’ success in matters of state, it was also a tender for a commission that the artist hoped to receive, for the ceiling at Whitehall Palace. The motivation for – and the history of – the painting given to Peiresc is more personal and complex, revealing much about Rubens and his world.
Rubens and Peiresc probably met in Antwerp in the second decade of the century: their first recorded contact was in 1619, three years after Peiresc had taken up residence in Paris. They became fast friends and their correspondence, beginning in October 1621, ranged topics from the problems and dangers of politics, the negotiations for satisfactory subjects for the decorations in the galleries of the Royal Luxembourg Palace in Paris, to the identification of gems and cameos. They also planned an ambitious joint publication of the most important ancient engraved gemstones and vases, a project that foundered in 1627 due to the demands of Rubens’ diplomatic career.1
During the 1620s, when their exchange of news and scholarly information was almost weekly, Peiresc built on his collection of portraits of their erudite friends. This gallery included men such as English historian William Camden, James I’s botanist Ecluse and the poets John Barclay, Balthazar de Vries and François de Malherbe. Framed beside them, in one of Europe’s great private libraries, was the portrait of Roman poet and Pope Urban VIII alongside members of his humanist circle, including the archaeologist-diplomats Cardinal Francesco Barberini, Cassiano dal Pozzo, Girolamo Aleandro and Lucas Holstenius. Scientists, like the now-forgotten inventor of the telescope Jacob Metius and his more famous successors, Galileo and Gassendi, stared down from the walls. Rubens’ face joined those of his countrymen – royal physician Jean Chifflet, Antwerp burgomaster and antiquarian Nicolaas Rockox and Latin chronicler Jan Caspar Gevaerts (Gevartius). In entering Peiresc’s study Rubens’ Self-portrait was hung in the company of men who had helped shape the destiny of Europe.

▫️
Mir Sayyid Ali was born in Tabriz, Azerbaijan-Iran. He migrated to Kabul, Afghanistan in 1552 to work for the Mughal Emperor Humayun (r. 1530-1540 and 1555-1556) and accompanied him to Delhi in 1555 to become the director of the royal manuscript atelier. He oversaw the production of the Hamzanama (Adventures of Hamza) project consisting of 1400 large-scale paintings bound in fourteen volumes in 1562-1572, which was completed under Abd al-Samad in 1572-1577 (see M.78.9.1). Mir Sayyid Ali depicts himself dressed in South Asian garb. He wears a Deccani style white turban with a decorative band wrapped around it and a floral jigha (plume-like ornament similar to an aigrette). Kneeling on a rug in a landscape, he is intently reading a book supported by an elegant book stand (see M.73.5.118 and M.76.2.19). Beside him is an inkwell, a pen box (see M.73.5.340 and M.89.160a-b), a writing tablet with two inscriptions, and an unfurling paper scroll. The upper inscription on the tablet reads, ‘At the top of the writing tablet, it is written in gold: “The master’s tyranny is better than the father’s kindness.”’ The lower inscription furnishes the artist’s signature, ‘Depicted by Sayyid Ali, the rarity of the kingdom of Humayun Shah.’ The calligraphic panels on the rug are a poetic couplet, ‘My two eyes are the coverings in that abode so that you may ordain your bridal room, there. Wherever you trudge along, I want to become the dust on the road, there.’ (Translations by A.S. Melikian-Chirvani.)

CASTLES. CASTLE DAY.
Today, I checked out Cēsis Castle in northern Latvia.
The oldest part of the castle was built 800 years ago and was destroyed by Ivan the Terrible in 1577, where it stood in ruins until the 1700s when the gatehouse was rebuilt as a new castle. I scheduled a tour of the castle and I don't regret it one bit. The guide was dressed as a servant of the castle and told me all about the history and archeology of the ruins. When we went into one of the towers, they gave us candle lit lanterns to help us explore. Probably one of my favorite days of my trip so far!
The video is of a video they show in one of the rooms that summarizes the history of the castle projected on the walls- super cool!
Today was my last day in Latvia - tomorrow, I head up into Estonia!

CRIT #1
Pawned Narratives - Beatrice Cenci and Beyond
In this project, I am aiming to explore the art of storytelling as it relates to the feelings of being a pawn in a system for women. Despite this being the unifying factor in the body of work, I aim to explore intersectionality and the diverse aspects of feeling like a "pawn" in one way or another depending on experience. Participants are given 5 questions in which they can answer whichever and however they feel to be appropriate. These photographs exist as places for women and their stories to exist, as an ode to all of the lost history of women everywhere for so many reasons. I was reminded of these millions of lost histories when reading a story of a girl from 1577- Beatrice Cenci- who killed her father (helped by her stepmother and siblings) in self defense when she was 18. The Pope in Rome at the time wanted the Cenci family money to build a chapel, and also wanted to make an example out of them to reflect a strong roman government. Due to this, Beatrice and her stepmother and all but one of her siblings was beheaded publicly. Caravaggio painted a final portrait of her in her cell, awaiting death, and these photographs are inspired by her final moments. They are also inspired heavily by Saidiya Hartman's Venus in Two Acts and this idea of lost histories and critical fabulation. This project is for all of the lost histories, and holds space for them along with creating a space for women existing right now, today.
