self para // the burning of the snakeskin
The fiery orange glow danced across Gabriel’s face, casting shadows over his haunted eyes as he stood rooted in place, watching his gallery consumed by flames. Years. It had taken years to bring this dream to life. Art wasn’t just a hobby or an escape for him—it was everything. When words failed, when people dismissed him for being “too serious” or misunderstood his connection to his father’s legacy, art was his constant. A solace. A language that spoke to him when nothing else could. The Serpents had no interest in his venture; it wasn’t their style. And Gabriel liked it that way. This gallery wasn’t for them, wasn’t for anyone but himself. It didn’t matter if it made a profit. It was his space, funded by the inheritance his father had left him. Gabriel often wondered if that money was an unspoken apology, a way of making up for how things had ended. His father couldn’t give him his rightful place on the council, but maybe this was his way of giving Gabriel something better: the chance to pursue his dream. And it was more than just a dream. Gabriel wanted art to be accessible, to belong to everyone, not just the wealthy elite. That’s why his gallery had free admission days, discounts, and an open-door policy. No one should be shut out from experiencing the magic of art. But now it was gone. Decades of creative expression reduced to embers, their stories silenced. The work of artists long departed was annihilated in minutes, erased by vandals who had no understanding of the beauty they’d destroyed.
As the firefighters doused the last of the flames, something inside Gabriel was extinguished too. Whatever lingering loyalty or warmth he might have felt for the Serpents was obliterated, left to scatter as ash through the streets of New York. He felt hollow now, a shell of himself, driven by one singular thought: revenge. The Serpents didn’t know what they’d unleashed.
Gabriel turned to leave, but a sudden flash of light halted him. Shielding his eyes, he realized he was surrounded by reporters, their microphones thrust toward his face as their voices clamored over one another. “Mr. De La Cruz! Mr. De La Cruz!” they shouted. “What do you think happened? How much was lost? Do you suspect arson?”
The questions piled on, each one stoking the fire inside him. His voice was steady but cold, laced with bitterness. “All I know is that tonight, this city lost something priceless. The people responsible for this did it deliberately. They wanted to hurt, to destroy something beautiful and irreplaceable. It’s a senseless act, and the world is poorer for it. But I promise you—this isn’t the end. There will be rebirth.” He met the camera’s lens, his gaze hard and unyielding, his dark brown eyes glinting with restrained fury. His words were sharp, each syllable a warning.
“Encendiste la cerilla; ahora mira cómo se propaga el fuego.”

Notable First Novels of 2023
Bellies by Nicola Dinan
I wore a dress on the night I first met Ming.
It begins as your typical boy meets boy. While out with friends at their local university drag night, Tom buys Ming a drink. Confident and witty, a magnetic young playwright, Ming is the perfect antidote to Tom’s awkward energy, and their connection is instant. Tom finds himself deeply and desperately drawn into Ming’s orbit, and on the cusp of graduation, he’s already mapped out their future together. But shortly after they move to London to start their next chapter, Ming announces her intention to transition.
From London to Kuala Lumpur, New York to Cologne, we follow Tom and Ming as they face tectonic shifts in their relationship and friend circle in the wake of Ming’s transition. Through a spiral of unforeseen crises—some personal, some professional, some life-altering—Tom and Ming are forced to confront the vastly different shapes their lives have taken since graduating, and each must answer the essential question: Is it worth losing a part of yourself to become who you are?
Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah
Loretta Thurwar and Hamara "Hurricane Staxxx" Stacker are the stars of Chain-Gang All-Stars, the cornerstone of CAPE, or Criminal Action Penal Entertainment, a highly-popular, highly-controversial, profit-raising program in America's increasingly dominant private prison industry. It's the return of the gladiators and prisoners are competing for the ultimate prize: their freedom.
In CAPE, prisoners travel as Links in Chain-Gangs, competing in death-matches for packed arenas with righteous protestors at the gates. Thurwar and Staxxx, both teammates and lovers, are the fan favorites. And if all goes well, Thurwar will be free in just a few matches, a fact she carries as heavily as her lethal hammer. As she prepares to leave her fellow Links, she considers how she might help preserve their humanity, in defiance of these so-called games, but CAPE's corporate owners will stop at nothing to protect their status quo and the obstacles they lay in Thurwar's path have devastating consequences.
Natural Beauty by Ling Ling Huang
Our narrator produces a sound from the piano no one else at the Conservatory can. She employs a technique she learned from her parents—also talented musicians—who fled China in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. But when an accident leaves her parents debilitated, she abandons her future for a job at a high-end beauty and wellness store in New York City.
Holistik is known for its remarkable products and procedures—from remoras that suck out cheap Botox to eyelash extensions made of spider silk—and her new job affords her entry into a world of privilege and a long-awaited sense of belonging. She becomes transfixed by Helen, the niece of Holistik’s charismatic owner, and the two strike up a friendship that hazily veers into more. All the while, our narrator is plied with products that slim her thighs, smooth her skin, and lighten her hair. But beneath these creams and tinctures lies something sinister.
The Unfortunates by J.K. Chukwu
Sahara is Not Okay. Entering her sophomore year at Elite University, she feels like a failure: her body is too curvy, her love life is nonexistent, her family is disappointed in her, her grades are terrible, and, well, the few Black classmates she has just keep dying. Sahara is close to giving up, herself: her depression is, as she says, her only “Life Partner.”
And this narrative—taking the form of an irreverent, piercing “thesis” to the university committee that will judge her—is meant to be a final unfurling of her singular, unforgettable voice before her own inevitable disappearance and death. But over the course of this wild sophomore year, and supported by her eccentric community of BIPOC women, Sahara will eventually find hope, answers, and an unexpected redemption.

No Laughing Matter: The Clowns and the Turmoil that Changed Toronto
In the summer of 1855 the city of Toronto was a far cry from the bustling capital city that it is today. Much closer to resembling the Wild West, the city was filled to the brim with bars, liquor shops, and brothels catering to the rotating population of approximately 40,000 people. Mary Ann Armstrong ran one of Toronto’s many “clubs” on the corner of King and Jarvis Streets and the combination bar and brothel was always busy, especially when new faces were passing through town. The sights, sounds, and stories that originated there are incalculable, but on one July night Armstrong’s establishment was the setup for an incident that sounds like a joke but was unfortunately very real with a horrible punchline. “A clown and a fireman walk into a bar…”
On the morning of July 12th 1855 a large group of travelers made their way into Toronto, but these visitors were a little more unusual than the normal passers-by, this was the S.B. Howes' Star Troupe Menagerie & Circus. S.B. Howe was one of the first circus companies to bring their act on tour traveling to one city and taking up residency for a few days before packing up their tents and disappearing from the scene. The circus was only supposed to be in town for two days and after their first performance a group of clowns decided to take in the town, eventually ending up at Mary Ann Armstrong’s building.

The image might sound funny, a group of clowns walking into a rowdy, tough, and intimidating brothel and bar, but these clowns were not to be messed with. Their jobs went far beyond entertaining and included the physical labor of building, breaking down, packing up, and moving their entire community to each city on the tour. They were strong, bold, and did not back down from a fight, which was a recipe for disaster considering the other people visiting Armstrong’s that night.

At this point in time fire departments were not formally established and individual companies formed privately and functioned for profit, racing to fires and charging a price before putting them out. It was not uncommon for rival fire companies to clash in the streets, sometimes requiring local law enforcement to intervene. Only two weeks before the circus came to town one local company, the Hook and Ladder Firefighting Company, was involved in a violent street brawl with another fire company that became known as the Fireman’s Riot. They were an aggressive group, and tonight they were visiting Armstrong’s establishment at the same time as the clowns.
There has never been a singular cause identified for what happened next. One account says that the clowns cut the line to get into the building. Another says one of the firemen named Fraser knocked a hat off the head of a clown named Meyers and refused to pick it up when asked. Others simply say it was a case of someone getting loud with someone else who did not take kindly to their tone. The result was an all-out brawl and by the time the police arrived the firemen were all beaten to a bloody pulp with two of them requiring medical attention at a hospital. The band of clowns simply went back out into the night to continue partying.
The situation was bad enough as is, but the political climate of the area made the conflict cut deeper. Much of Toronto’s population was made up of Irish Catholics but the city government was deeply Irish Protestant and Tory elite, supported by the Orange Order, who were also firmly in the corner of the bloodied Hook and Ladder Firefighting Company. As far as the fire department was concerned the clowns had just declared war.
When the S.B. Howes' Star Troupe Menagerie & Circus came into town they pitched their tents along the waterfront at the site of Fair Green, near the St. Lawrence Market. On the day after the brothel brawl, Friday the 13th, the merchants in the market were few and far between, there was word that something bad was brewing. Slowly they began to arrive to the circus grounds, a large mob of Orangemen of the Orange Order, and before long the rocks began to fly. The circus performers were able to hold back the assault for a short amount of time but when the fire department arrived it was not to help the entertainers, it was to destroy them. The members of the Hook and Ladder Firefighting Company arrived carrying pikes, pipes, and axes. They tore apart the circus tents, beat anyone in their paths, set fires, and knocked over wagons with a bloodthirsty ferocity. Police Chief Samuel Sherwood, a former tavern owner with no formal training, arrived and brought in a handful of constables throughout the day but never put a focused effort into quelling the violence. How could he? He was a part of the Orange Order himself and when later questioned about the level of power he had in his position as Chief his answer was “A very small one indeed…I give orders and instructions to the force, but cannot get them obeyed. As soon as I am out of sight, the men do as they please.” When the Mayor arrived at the scene he took matters into his own hands, wrestling an ax from a fireman who was about to murder one of the clowns and calling in a militia to finally put a stop to the violence. The clowns and other performers took what was left of their belongings and fled the city as quickly as possible.

The aftermath of the riot was unfortunately familiar. When the Fireman’s Riot happened only weeks beforehand the memories of the police department and the firemen involved were suddenly and inexplicably fuzzy and they could not recall a single member of the Orange Order that was on the scene. One constable said it was too dark out to see any faces and another even said that the entire ordeal was carefully planned so that only people unfamiliar to the police would be involved. The exact same scenario played out again after the attack on the circus clowns and suddenly no one who advanced on the tents could recall anything that happened. Out of the entire mob only seventeen people were ever arrested and when they went to court every single person who attacked the circus that day was acquitted.

The official word on what happened may have been hazy but the public saw the corruption very clearly and while they could not create change overnight, the Toronto Clown Riot proved to be a fatal blow to the too-long accepted state of things. After the riot it became much more common to question the conveniently selective memories of the police force that was given absolute power with no form of training. The formerly iron-clad coverups for the actions of the fire departments corroded and began to lose strength. The voices against the Orange Order got louder and louder.
One of the biggest indicators that the public had had enough came with the next election when for the first time in twenty years a mayor was elected that was backed by the Irish Catholics despite the hardest efforts of the Orange Order to prevent it. Reform and organization was needed and in 1858 the first provincially approved board put a restructuring of the new city government and police force into motion. In February of 1859 the entire police force was fired (roughly half that were not part of the Toronto Clown Riot were reinstated), a new chief was brought on board, and finally Toronto had a police force that was out of private hands, nonpolitical, and under close watch by the newly established city government.
The fates of many of the S.B. Howes' Star Troupe Menagerie & Circus clowns are greatly unknown and the clown named Meyers has faded into time. Little could he or any of the clowns imagined on that July night that getting into a fist fight with a gang of firemen in a brothel would lay the foundation for the establishment of Toronto’s first formal police department.

i wonder how pluto in aquarius will see the upending and remaking of the digitally connected, physically backed archivist/private (as any such supposedly passive acts of cognitive synthesis are, in your own final realm, your apocalypse of having the say in aesthetic judgment) maniac/collector mindset from its last tenuous social fiber. especially in light of how new the digital landscape for this commercial and microculturally reformative experience of music is, the reselling ecosystem gaining a more sophisticated footing and becoming fully integrated with the background ambience of encounter, freed from the storefront, warehouse, or organization. too much decentralization of intelligence going on, without understanding its roots/how virtue in the act of sharing is implanted with the singularity of experience, a fleet dreaming of the eternal as it passes an opaque bay, dangling the diamonds of ecstatic understanding and communion from the sky, the second a sparkling shroud usurps the reality of night. how do you regard people and organizational bodies when they appear to treat music, whose nimbus challenges the monotony of culture industry even if born from its limb, as an opportunistic endeavor, a source of profit despite their glaring position of wealth (i suppose the early modern example of elite patronage doesn't count because there is no community around you if you are on the internet via smart phone and everyone in your social sprawl can say the same) and lack of contribution, whether toward cultural hermeneutic attuning and a real human feeling bridged across frequencies and electrical signals that remind us of our own electrochemical enunciation into sentience, the music making that leap, so necessary to nourish the soul, in holding and reaching the essential pulse of the body taken in through its history, as listening is time travel, or to the knowledge base outside the egoic affirmation made in the public display of closed distribution or the curation of mixes/ancillary compilations (in that, you didn’t directly rip or surface sides/cuts by your own efforts) tapping on the glass of a faraway milieu barred in language and a culture's common scope of intuitive relationally appendable and exchangeable signs, a net of bubbles that they could never have known without popping them from the future? i must humble myself and kiss the lash of my own ignorance. and yet! that is where the beauty rises, in that miraculous flash of feeling like you can get through, by that mystery of being so affected by art on the threshold of its knowability when its corners aren't fully illuminated yet, by our capacity for expressing and making out of the manifold of the self and its paths of pliability made arable, sown together, the boundaries of the ego melting and recasting, that is how you know and that is how you are made anew, when you are taken up by sound, by song, by rhythm, by the canon of the heartbeat.

The penthouse office overlooking Manhattan's glittering skyline should have felt like the ultimate victory. Yet as Katie Hansley gazed out at the city lights from behind her imposing desk, she felt...unsettled. Restless. Like there was still something vital missing despite checking off every accomplished box.
She was only 28 years old, but Katie had already conquered virtually every goal she'd set for herself emerging from her working-class Chicago roots. Valedictorian, elite university graduate, rising star at a top PR firm, her own wildly successful company acquired before 30 - she'd clawed her way to the top through sheer force of will.
So why did triumph taste so...hollow?
The jarring shrill of her phone broke Katie's turbulent reverie. It was her mother calling from Illinois, their weekly check-in ritual. Muscle memory kicked in as Katie plastered on her trademark poised smile.
"Hi Mom, it's me. Yeah, everything's great here..." She reflexively launched into her canned pep talk about landing another huge new client and profit records. Unconsciously, her free hand toyed with the delicate heart-shaped locket hanging around her neck - one of the few remnants from her youth she still clung to.
As Katie prattled on about "crushing it" at the office, her mind began to drift. She found herself pondering her high school boyfriend Jeff and the future they dreamed about as lovestruck teens before ambition consumed her. Or the priceless looks of awe and admiration her baby nephew Robbie used to get whenever she was around before her all-consuming career pulled her away.
There were so many meaningful human connections she'd sacrificed and missed out on over the years in her singular pursuit of success. But she convinced herself those could wait until she had it all figured out and settled...right?
"...Katie? Are you still there, honey?"
Her mother's concerned voice snapped Katie's consciousness back to the present moment. She blinked hard, forcing herself to refocus.
"Yeah, Mom, I'm here," she replied automatically, shutting down the uncharacteristic wave of wistful vulnerability threatening to break through. "Like I said - I'm great. Everything is perfect."
The words tasted like ashes in her mouth.

Role of Placemaking and Third Places: A Case Study on Cubao Expo
Before Metro Manila, there was just Manila. During the Spanish colonial period, Intramuros was the center and first gated community in the Philippines. Intramuros began formal urbanization in the metropolitan area consisting of schools, churches, hospitals, municipalities, global trades, and marketplaces. Such builds inside Intramuros were further developed beyond its walls and continued during the American colonization– towards what is Metro Manila now. A normal travel around the region would consist of car congested roads, long queues for public transports, and endless shuffle of high rise and low rise buildings. To add, remarks such as “Saan na tayo?” (Where are we?) is a common question while in transit. This is because of the absence of distinct boundaries between each city and the repetition of the same establishments. In order to distinguish one’s location, signifiers would be attached to the large mall, establishment branch, government tarpaulins, or formal green sign nearest to you.
The City Who Had Two Navels, Philippine Arts in Venice Biennale
Metro Manila is a salad of post-colonialism, political power, and big enterprises. The Philippine Pavilion during the 16th Venice Architecture Biennale presented The City Who Had Two Navels, curated by Edson Cabalfin. The ‘two navels’ in the art installation represented the two forces that shaped the metropolitan— a confrontation on the tension between the vicissitudes of the past and the challenges of constructing contemporary subjectivity (Cabalfin 1). The art and research discussed the impacts of colonialism on the formation of the built environment and how the process of neoliberalization reshaped the urban landscape of Metro Manila (Cabalfin 3). This study will only challenge the force of neoliberal urbanism in Metro Manila. Neoliberal urbanism is defined as the following:
“Neoliberal urbanism is a concept used to describe the progressive privatization and the commodification of our cities as profit making machines. The overarching goal of neoliberal urban development policies is to “mobilize city space as an arena both for market oriented economic growth and for elite consumption” (Brenner & Theodore 368)(Gonzales 2)
“The effect has become pervasive across the globe, often linked with the process of globalization, where public and private lives are placed under strict governmentality and control, despite the ideals of personal liberty” (Stiglitz)(Cabalfin 19).
The simple definition of neoliberal urbanism is its aim for modernisation and privatization of assets in a city, a global widespread pursuit initiated by people of power. Such prolific progression is not ideal because it leads to more layers of urban problems. The consequences of neoliberal urbanism are discussed in the paper of The City Who Had Two Navels and was categorized into seven factors. Homogenization of cities is a characteristic present when observing cities and is one of the collective outcomes of neoliberal urbanism (Cabalfin 25). This paper will only be covering the product of homogenization of cities. Homogenization can be interrelated with Marc Ague’s Non-places (25); the following are the :
They are the product of supermodernity such as motorways, shopping malls, airports and more.
“non-places are the real measure of our time; one that could be quantified - with the aid of a few conversions between area, volume and distance - by totaling all the air, rail and motorway routes, the mobile cabins called 'means of transport', the airports and railway stations, hotel chains...”(79)
It reflects time because it transforms and modernizes premodern figures. It does not totally erase the past but keeps premodern figures in the shadows.
“Modernity does not obliterate them [premodern figures] but pushes them into the background. They are like gauges indicating the passage and continuation of time” (Auge 77).
“non-place creates neither singular identity nor relations; only solitude, and only similitude (103).” “If a place can be defined as relational, historical and concerned with identity, then a space which can not
be defined as relational, or historical, or concerned with identity will be a non-place (77).”
The duplication of the same build whose sole purpose is in relation to certain ends are most likely seen as profitable or ‘successful’, yet these builds are clearly not economic workings that contribute to a
economically and culturally is the third place. The third place is where people spend time outside of their home (first place) and work (second place). It is a term coined by Ray Oldenburg in his book The Great Good Place. Oldenburg describes these places as informal public gatherings that foster community and relations. Examples of these third places are bars, restaurants, coffee shops, barbershops, and other public spaces where people meet, gather, and connect. It is a place where people go to ‘just to enjoy each other’(Jeffres, et al. 334).
“Third places, manifesting as a component of good public spaces, are argued to be vital ingredients of successful cities, enhancing civic identity, cultural identity, quality of life, social capital, economic development and community revitalization. Third places being centers and gathering spaces of a community, these places can contribute to creating a diverse and active neighborhood through placemaking.” (Cilliers 73)
Placemaking focuses on a community-based and people-centered approach. These are important in societies because of its social benefits of the development of a sense of belonging and participation. (Ellery 238) “Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they
lively urbanization or culture. (Jacobs)
Meanwhile, one of the anchors of a community that contributes
are created by everybody. (Jacobs 238) With this, it is important that communities are exposed to more than just non-places but spaces made by and for the community.
Back in the 1970s, Marikina Shoe Expo was built and located in General Romulo Street of Cubao (Baltazar) close to the Ali Mall, the first mall in the Philippines (Clement). This U-shaped compound was a quaint space for Marikina shoemakers to showcase and sell their leather products (Baltazar). The space closed down during 1997 and reopened again in 2000– as today’s Cubao Expo or Cubao X, as nicknamed by its frequent visitors and mainstayers (Baltazar). It was no longer a landmark for shoe retailers; it has adapted into a creative district that housed different kinds of third places– homegrown bars, shops, cafes, galleries, restaurants, and alike.
Amidst its location in a modern commercial estate, Cubao Expo retained its old shophouse build that kept its charm. When entering, the third places in the compound are abreast with one another and each displays its own unique identity and provides different needs to its community or visitors– may it be art, coffee, music, antiques, and other finds. Cubao Expo is a melting pot of subculture and this is sustained through the “community-driven effort” from its tenants (Aquino). Subcultures are social groups, or groups of individuals who share similar lifestyles, belief systems, or other commonalities... subculture refers to individuals who are a part of a group that is different from the dominant culture or dominant people in a particular part of society (Lennon, Johnson, & Rudd 292).
“Cubao X (or Cubao Expo) are prime examples of the community’s efforts to revitalize otherwise underutilized areas. Cubao X, originally known as the Marikina Shoe Expo in the 1970s, was transformed into rows of boutiques, second-hand stores, restaurants and artist-run spaces... Exhibitions, gigs and events are still held there, forging a specific lifestyle that caters to enthusiasts and the youth.” (British Council 8)
If Marc Auge’s Non-Place is a product of supermodernity and similitude, then Cubao Expo being a product of the local people and diversity is the opposite, an anthropological place– in a cesspool of supermodernity. This paper states that Cubao Expo is an anthropological place that fosters social cohesion and diversity through third places and placemaking.
This study intends to find evidence and support evidence on the importance of Cubao Expo and places alike in societies. In order to accomplish this study, the data gathering will be conducted in Cubao Expo through surveys and interviews. Interviews will be made with the current tenants in the area such as Bellini’s and My Breathing Space. The production of this paper will be a contribution to the study of placemaking for the reason of the lack of academic research published. (Legaspi 2) In economic literature, quality of life (QoL) is seen and measured as an ‘economic good’ that benefits intercity competitiveness, this paper gives evidence that the deployment of arts and cultural third places brings economic good (QoL) to a community.

[ image description: two screenshots of a section of the article linked, they reads:
For adherents of the Mindset, every crisis is a potential business opportunity. Rushkoff cites TED Talks as a prime example of this. The formula of a TED Talk is as follows: identify a problem, reframe it to get people to see the problem in a whole new way, develop a business plan that can scale, then deliver a short speech that inspires enough venture capitalists to invest in the idea. Platforms like TED serve to give venture capitalism its philanthropic veneer, in which the kinds of problems that demand collective action and coordination — such as education reform, world hunger, climate change, and urban development — can be referred upward to an entrepreneurial elite whose members want to believe that their investments are a way of making the world a better place.
Rushkoff notes how these projects have a way of undermining public and state initiatives by "divert [ing] limited funding to moonshot boondoggles — all while making the wealthiest even wealthier." For example, Singularity University has the XPRIZE competition, which offers as much as $100 million to the next great business idea that has the potential to "make a positive impact at planetary scale." These proposals often come in the form of novel and totalizing solutions, or "game changers." One of the traits of techno–solutionism, as Rushkoff rightly notes, is that it must necessarily reinvent the way we think about the problem in question. So rather than attempt to collectively reduce the possibility of extinction here on Earth, for instance, the answer becomes to leave Earth altogether. By extension, this outlook assumes that people can only be expected to act in their own interests if there are profitable incentives dangled before them, and any solution that is not lucrative should not be considered realistic.

Japanese Fashion and Society Glossary
Some words are universal. There's no need for me to explain what's a "fashion magazine" or a "trend." But, when it comes to Japanese fashion and societal trends, a few terms are specific to the country. Here's a quick look into some of them.
Dokusha moderu (dokumo)
Dokusha moderu, often abbreviated to "dokumo," are members of the public that appear as non-professional models and influencers on the pages of fashion magazines.
Despite decades of "dokumo" use in fashion magazines, the definition of the term can still be a bit blurred. Some girls represented by major entertainment agencies and with showbiz careers define themselves as "dokumo" for branding reasons. On the other hand, conventional wisdom is that a "dokumo" is a reader model that appears regularly in a magazine. But is a singular appearance in a fashion title enough to consider yourself a "dokumo"? What about several appearances, but all of them relegated to the "street snap" session? Some will say that's enough, others will disagree. The rules aren't clear.
But elite university students and fashionable OLs have been prominent characters in fashion magazines since their inception. However, many point out Mieko Hamada's popularity in the early 1980s as the surge of the dokumo phenomenon. Mieko was a stylish student in an elite private high school spotlighted in Magazine House's influential conceptual teen magazine Olive. She became popular with readers, and the publication hired her as an exclusive model.
Teen publications have heavily relied on dokumos. In the 1990s, the gyaru phenomenon revolutionized teen girl fashion with gyaru magazines exporting the style from Shibuya to high schools around Japan. The models in those influential magazines (egg, Popteen, Cawaii!) were all non-professional readers models, often plucked from the streets of Shibuya. From 1995 to 2002, the unisex Tokyo Street News magazine gained immense popularity featuring hip and attractive "real life" high schoolers.
But the phenomenon went much further than teen fashion. Regardless of the category -- OL, college students, luxury brand aficionados, fashionable housewives -- most fashion titles have their dokumos.
The appeal of the dokumo is that they're more relatable than professional models. Most magazines have gorgeous models as their "muse," but the dokumo is a closer reflection of the average reader. This relatability helps fashion titles' two main objectives: propel trends and stimulate sales.
Plenty of dokumos have parlayed their popularity with readers into profitable careers. Some have created their own highly successful fashion brands. Others entered the entertainment business and became TV personalities. More recently, the most logical path is to use magazine exposure to establish yourself as an influencer and get followers where it matters: Instagram.
Fashion buildings
Alongside traditional department stores, some of the most influential retail spaces in Japanese history are "fashion buildings." The Shibuya 109 store that revolutionized teen girls' fashion; the avant-garde Shibuya Parco; Harajuku LaForet. But if they are not department stores or shopping malls, what are they?
"Department stores" is a concept found around the world. Popular in Europe, the USA, and elsewhere, department stores where you can find a mix of domestic brands with luxury goods and cosmetics are a staple in Japan, usually built near or inside the biggest train stations.
On the other hand, shopping centers were a rarity due to strict regulations on the size of commercial facilities. However, by the turn of the 21st century, the law got amended. As a result, big malls started popping up in residential suburbs across the country.
Until then, busy districts in the city center were the go-to shopping destinations. And, with no malls, the alternative to the department store was the "fashion building." Fashion buildings are centrally located and have individual stores but are considerably smaller than traditional malls. It is common for most stores to target a specific audience (i.e.:teen, girls, young people, OLs, etc.) Overall, the experience is different and more curated than a traditional shopping center.
The most iconic fashion buildings (Shibuya 109, Shibuya Parco, LaForet) are still standing, and this type of commercial facility is a fixture in every central shopping area across Japan. Some of the most successful retail spaces of the last decade are the fashion building attached to Tokyo's (and the world's) busiest station, Shinjuku Station such as Lumine, or the (relatively) newly-built NeWoMan.
In the last few years, these somewhat modest buildings have lost a bit of space to flashier urban commercial complexes such as Ginza Six, Omotesando Hills, and the renovated (and expanded) Shibuya Parco. However, they are still a vital part of Japanese fashion history. And, as the booming Shinjuku Lumine makes clear, still part of the present.
Office lady (OL)
The expectations for middle-class men and women in post-war Japan have been somewhat straightforward. After graduating high school, you'll move to university. If you're a man, you'll eventually become a salaryman, a faceless white-collar worker dressed in the traditional dark business suit. You will marry, have kids and work your way up in the company, earning enough money to provide for your family.
If you're a woman, you'll become an office lady. Commonly referred to as an OL, it's usually lower in the hierarchical scale than its male counterpart, the "salarymen." OLs usually perform clerical or secretarial work. Traditionally it's the job women hold before getting married.
The term office lady was coined by women's weekly Josei Jishin in 1963. Before that, they were referred to as "business girls" or "BGs." But the term was too similar to "B-girls," which is how English speakers would refer to nightlife workers known as "bar girls." So Josei Jishin proposed some replacement names. Readers decided, by vote, on "OL." And since then, the term has entered the Japanese lexicon.
Females are the driving force behind Japan's consumerism. And unmarried OLs, with disposable income are at the center of that. So countless consumer crazes were fueled by them, starting with the notorious popularity of luxury Louis Vuitton bags in Japan from the 1970s forward. The best-selling and most influential fashion titles in the 90s and early 2000s also targeted them.
In the present, Japan is a very different country than it was in the past. Salaries are lower, job security is much scarcer, marriage rates are declining, and the economy is nowhere near as prosperous. Luxury brand goods are nowhere near as accessible as in the "bubble period" of the economic miracle (1986-1991).
But when it comes to trends and consumer crazes, OLs' impact has been historically immense. And to this day, they remain among the most influential consumer groups.

After a long day of truly cursed thoughts, I’ve come to the determination that the Cerberus Assembly can act as a sort of Exandrian analog of our world’s Silicon Valley, and I hate it. I hate hate hate it.
The more I think about it, the more it just sort of melds into my mind as fact. I can’t escape it. This is where I live now.
You’ve got this collection of self-proclaimed super geniuses, unbounded by modern social mores and determined to invent a new sort of ethics, with an intent on shaping history and sagely guiding the world into a better future. This is despite the fact that most of the ideas they have inevitably end up making the world worse, and the only thing “new” that they really bring into the world is a bunch of actually very old ideas coated in fresh circuitry/magic.
But let’s dig a little deeper and start getting specific.
They both have these images of fiercely independent, creative bodies desperate to remain free from government control, and sometimes even as a check on that very government. The heads of the Cerberus Assembly outright say their intent is to act as a check on the Crown, and are known to have many secrets the Crown is, to their knowledge, totally unaware of.
Tech companies, particularly in America, have this outward facing very libertarian outlook on things, saying they don’t wish to interfere in the very important process of democracy and free speech, while simultaneously feeling it is their responsibility to fact check those in power and hold them to account, with their “serious vetting” of political ads and the like on their platforms. They also lobby heavily against any and all regulation of their various products and services, preferring to let the “invisible hand” of the market provide the service of keeping them in check, much as the Cerberus Assembly prefers to handle its own problems internally.
But when you really dig into the details this is all bullshit. The Cerberus Assembly, for all intents and purposes, IS the Empire. They run the secret police, for goodness sake. The two are so interconnected, and the Assembly as an institution is so dependent on the infrastructure and manpower, and of course money (because the fancy clothes, giant towers, and expensive sets of material components don’t pay for themselves) of the Empire to accomplish its goals, it can’t serve as a real check on Imperial forces possibly “overstepping”, and it also has no material interest in doing so; the more power and control the Empire has, the more power and control the Assembly has; the less freedom the citizens have due to authoritarian “safety” measures implemented by the Crown, the safer the Assembly itself becomes to pursue it’s morally dubious work and experimentation.
The same goes with Silicon Valley and the various tech companies that fall under its ethos. They will expound continually on the necessary freedom from government control they must have to truly change the world in the ways they think are best, but the primary source of money for most of these companies are governments. They either primarily contract with governments for most of their actual profits or to use its already established infrastructure, as is the case with Amazon, or depend heavily on publicly funded research for their innovations, which is everyone from Apple to Google to Microsoft and dozens and dozens of smaller companies besides. They then even get to patent these publicly funded innovations and hold a monopolized stranglehold on their use. This is not even to mention the starter capital necessary to form many of these companies in the first place itself was provided by governments, with the rather, shall we say “morally questionable” Kingdom of Saudi Arabia being among the top contributors to such start ups.
Even when either of these groups claim to be self-made, it’s all bullshit. So many of our famous tech overlords that supposedly built themselves from nothing started at the upper reaches of society, with more than enough capital and connections to insure they were never at any real risk of failing in the first place. Most even went to the same elite institutions of learning that provide the vast majority of the political leadership of the United States, institutions they had access to due to their wealth and familial connections, not their brains. Elon Musk’s family owned an emerald mine in Zambia for God’s sake, one his family would have never owned without the British Empire being a thing.
The same can be said for the Assembly. The upper classes of the Dwendalian Empire are lousy with mages and magic users. If they don’t have a place to climb among the nobility, they work for the Assembly, and hope to climb there. It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the only poorer mage recruits we know anything real about all were sucked up into the service of the Scourgers, one of the few arms of the Assembly known to regularly interact with societies lower reaches and not so positively at that, and had their familial identities obliterated in the process. Both of these groups are of the upper reaches of society and serve the upper reaches of society, and we should never think anything less.
And this brings us to the ideological framework both of these groups think with. They are both full to the brim with people who are individualists to the extreme. They all believe they are singular actors in the great tapestry of history, who got where they are by hard work and dedication, and anyone who isn’t there just didn’t do enough. The folks living in the tent city outside Zadash? lazy layabouts who simply have not applied their mind to be something greater, or perhaps their veins are just full of bad blood. Poor former factory workers in Detroit whose jobs have been moved to places where labor laws are weaker and wages are lower? If they’d only taken their education more seriously, they could be where I am! Or maybe they just never tried to be an Uber driver or delivering for Grubhub, because that’s how you really pull yourself out of poverty.
Meanwhile, most of the groups consist of people who have never once known real adversity and certainly not the hardship of poverty nor the lack of social and political power that position entails. They are blinded to the reality of most people in the world outside their rather small one, and thus have no understanding of the material hardship that most people experience during their everyday life.
You see this most clearer in the manner in which they try to solve what they see as societies great problems, with no clear thought put into the consequences of these particular solutions. In our world, this is particularly obvious. Uber is painted as an innovative means of transportation on a budget, when in reality it’s just a fleet of untrained, underpaid, non-unionized taxi drivers using their own personal vehicles at their own expense. Elon Musk is seen as this super genius when his solution to LA traffic wasn’t a more robust public transportation system or slowly reconstructing the city to be more pedestrian friendly, but instead to build a massive network of single car elevators under the city to zip cars to key hot spots faster in a manner people less anxious than me would still call risky at best. I mean most of these people think the key to ending poverty is teaching people to code or giving them STEM education, even when in a capitalist economy the only thing a sudden flooding of new coders and STEM educated folks would insure is that the jobs that require those skills will see a sudden massive drop in pay and benefits as the pool of prospective employees becomes over-saturated and individual workers no longer have any bargaining power to protect their once rare jobs. You already see this in animation and video game design, and you’ll certainly see it elsewhere.
For the Assembly, despite being praised as the brightest arcane minds of Wildmount, seem to get most of their ideas either by stealing them from others or digging them up out of the ground. But this is just the nature of empire; it’s always easier for an empire to consume than it is to create. So as little as they think of the Dynasty, they are eager to steal every little bit of knowledge they’ve discovered about Dunamis, and without the faith and moral sense the Luxon-based religion imposes, they will never be forced to put the use of this rare and dangerous magic into perspective. Imagine what harm they can cause with gravity and time magic when they don’t have that religious pressure to consider the value of life and choice. But this makes sense when their main sources of inspiration are the wizards of the Age Of Arcana; you know, the wizards whose hubris nearly destroyed the entire world and spurred an apocalyptic war that sent society into a dark age in which the gods themselves abandoned them? A+ inspiration material if you ask me.
Even the culture of these two groups in regards to how they regulate themselves is so eerily similar. Think of Delilah Briarwood. Member in good standing of the Cerberus Assembly. Also, worshipper of Vecna and talented necromancer. Only expelled from the Assembly after involvement from the Cobalt Soul, even when you know every other member of the Assembly almost certainly had loads of information on this lady.
It just makes me think of all the weird, right-wingers and Nazis who occasionally get expelled from the heights of Silicon Valley whenever some journalist exposes them, and how quickly their colleagues are to condemn them even when so many of them either knew this person was this way well before they were exposed or actively agreed with them and still do. I mean, think of how protected Bill Gates is, because of how much his philanthropist image has served to insulate and protect the gross consolidation of wealth and power in the hands of so few, even when his fortune was built on stolen ideas, military funding and research, and a hardcore software monopoly for well over a decade or two. Also, his philanthropy has done nothing to help African people build their own institutions of power independent of European and American influence, and have help distract us from the damage really caused to the entire continent by earlier colonialism and later capitalist imperialism.
This is to say as bad as our world is, I now definitely don’t want to live in Wildemount. I don’t want to live a world where Mark Zukerberg can cast Disintegrate. Not ideal. I guess I’ll just have to work that much harder to fix this one and not depend on learning Dunamancy to just put us on a different path. Bummer.
