Davies & Co.
BRANDING & WEBSITE
Davies & Co. is a business performance coaching service that I have had the wonderful opportunity of working with for the past year to refine their logo and create a website where potential clients can learn more about their process, past clients, and the services offered. The site is uniquely set in black, with powerful black & white photography. We also utilized white, vector icons and a lot of little coded surprises throughout the site— I can’t tell you how proud I am of this final site! You can visit the site here!

one of the interesting things about these ‘democratizing’ apps/programs is that sometimes, the biggest consequence isn’t a loss of jobs. sometimes stuff just looks way worse, and no one really notices.
- web designers argued over drag & drop site builders like squarespace. as it turns out, big corps continued to hire them, but now there’s tons of small businesses with poorly laid-out, barely functional shopifys.
- graphic designers challenged picmonkey-esque programs’ claims that anyone could make professional designs, without needing experience. major agencies still contract graphic designers, but we lose the rich oil painting covers on cheap romance novels, in favor of bland 15-minute canva creations.
honestly, i’m an ‘art is art is art’ person who thinks a roomba spilling a cup of juice on a carpet should be considered art. my contention here is that these apps didn’t suddenly give everyone the skills needed to fulfill their artistic visions, they just trivialized the work that goes into so much of the art we see. it then became so obvious that the industry actors who could afford it would keep using the more expensive services, while the rest of us wade through endless mediocre output. it’s like a rich person hiring a well-trained italian barista, then telling you that you’ve been provided for because they gave you a 90s paper-cup drink vending machine. the coffee just isn’t the same.
#not to mention how workers across fields were given these tools and made to do the work of 2-3 employees#office managers having to take over social media#small business clerks building websites#tech won’t save us#socialism#visual artists#generative art#mine

Creative Careers 101: Building a Portfolio That Opens Doors
Creating a portfolio is an essential step for anyone looking to forge a successful career in creative fields such as graphic design, writing, photography, art, and many others. A well-crafted portfolio not only showcases your work and skills but also communicates your personal brand and professional journey. Here's a comprehensive guide on building a portfolio that opens doors to new opportunities.
Understand Your Goals and Audience
Before you start compiling your portfolio, it’s crucial to identify your career objectives and understand the audience you’re targeting. Are you looking for freelance projects, aiming for a full-time position in a specific industry, or seeking admission to an educational program? Each goal may require a slightly different approach to presenting your work. Knowing your audience—whether potential clients, employers, or admission officers—helps tailor your portfolio to their expectations and needs.
Select Your Best Work
Your portfolio should be a curated collection of your best work, not everything you’ve ever created. Choose projects that demonstrate your skills, creativity, and range of abilities. It's better to have a smaller number of high-quality, diverse pieces than to fill your portfolio with similar projects or work of lesser quality. Aim for a variety that showcases different styles, mediums, or genres you're proficient in, as this can illustrate your versatility and adaptability.
Tell the Story Behind Each Project
For each piece you include, provide context and a narrative. Explain the project's objectives, your role, the process you followed, the challenges you faced, and how you overcame them. This storytelling approach does more than just display your work; it offers insight into your problem-solving abilities, creativity, and work ethic. It can also highlight your growth as a professional by illustrating how you’ve tackled various challenges.
Focus on Presentation
The way you present your work can be as important as the work itself. Ensure your portfolio is well-organized and easy to navigate. Use high-quality images or clear, readable text, and consider the layout and design of your portfolio. It should reflect your personal brand and style, with a consistent theme, color scheme, and font choice. An aesthetically pleasing and professional presentation can significantly impact the viewer's perception of your work.
Go Digital
In today’s digital age, having an online portfolio is a must. It allows you to reach a wider audience and makes your work accessible to potential clients and employers worldwide. There are several platforms and website builders specifically designed for creating portfolios, such as Behance, Adobe Portfolio, and Squarespace. Make sure your online portfolio is mobile-friendly, as many people browse the internet on their phones.
Update Regularly
Your portfolio should be a living document that evolves with your career. Regularly update it with new projects, and don’t hesitate to remove older works that no longer represent your best or most relevant work. Keeping your portfolio current ensures that potential clients or employers are seeing your latest and greatest achievements.
Solicit Feedback
Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback on your portfolio from peers, mentors, or professionals in your field. Constructive criticism can offer new perspectives and insights on improving your presentation or which pieces to include. Additionally, engaging with your community can lead to valuable connections and opportunities.
Personalize Your Portfolio for Opportunities
Whenever possible, tailor your portfolio to the specific opportunity you’re pursuing. This might mean emphasizing certain projects or skills that are particularly relevant or rearranging your work to lead with the most pertinent examples. Personalizing your portfolio demonstrates your genuine interest in the opportunity and can make a stronger impression on the viewer.
In conclusion, a well-designed portfolio is a powerful tool for opening doors in creative careers. It not only showcases your work but also tells the story of your professional journey, abilities, and potential. By understanding your goals and audience, selecting your best work, focusing on presentation, and continuously updating your portfolio, you can create a compelling showcase that captures the attention of potential clients, employers, and opportunities.

Eight Explanations on Why Ecommerce Builder is important
Building a website should not be an overwhelming undertaking. Getting a website up and operating quickly is possible with the help of a reliable website builder.
As a first step, what are website builders?
If you don't have any coding experience, website builders can help you create a stunning website in only a few hours. Website builders like Squarespace, Weebly and Wix usually are distinct platforms, although they may also be included in specific hosting plans. Instead of large-scale content websites, they are utilized to build smaller websites.
It is common for these online website builders to enable you to choose a template and then drag and drop various parts until you are pleased with the design. Some come pre-installed with web hosting, while others need you to purchase web hosting on top of the software you already own.
Using a Website Builder Has Its Advantages
Certain types of website owners may benefit significantly from the usage of a website builder. An essential and functioning website may be created in the least amount of time feasible by using them.
As you can see, there are many reasons individuals use website builders when they're starting with their first website.
1. No technical skills required
An e-commerce builder is an easy-to-use tool for those with no prior knowledge of computer programming. Using drag-and-drop technology, you may organize your website until it looks the way you want it to look.

3. No need to learn to code
It is meant for folks with little to no technical expertise to use. It is possible to fill in text, upload photos, or update and rearrange any element by just clicking and dragging the mouse – all without writing or editing a single line of code and without having to utilize FTP and all the other technical things.
4.Easily accessible
Any computer in the world may make changes to your website at any moment. Because site builders are hosted online, your website files are not stored on your computer. All you need is a web browser and an Internet connection to log into your account, make a modification, and then save or publish your changes.
5. No design skills required
There's no need to have any design skills to use this. A basic understanding of visual design is required to create an engaging website. You may, of course, start with a professionally-designed template if you're not sure where to begin or lack confidence in your creative abilities.
Even better, you don't have to adhere to any particular template design since practically every website builder enables you to customize the template’s design following your personal preferences and style.
6.Apps and tools can be added
Free apps and tools may be added to your website with the help of any website builder. Website builders often include several pre-installed programs, but third-party developers may also add their custom extensions.
With Website.com's drag-and-and-drop editor, you can effortlessly add a slew of pre-installed applications for e-commerce website development. In little time at all, you'll have a functioning website. Creating a website is made more accessible and functional with the assistance of an expert eCommerce Website Development Company Ahmedabad.

Key Elements of Interactive Web Design:
User Interface (UI): The UI is the visual and Interactive Websites elements of the website that users interact with, such as buttons, menus, forms, and navigation. A well-designed UI makes it easy for users to understand and use the website's features.
User Experience (UX): UX focuses on creating a positive and seamless experience for users while they interact with the website. This involves considering user needs, preferences, and behaviors to design intuitive and efficient interactions.
Animation and Transitions: Adding subtle animations and transitions to elements can make the website feel more dynamic and responsive. However, it's essential not to overdo it, as excessive animation can lead to a cluttered and distracting experience.
Responsiveness: Interactive web design should adapt to different devices and screen sizes. This means the website should be mobile-friendly and work well on various devices, including smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers.
Feedback and Validation: Providing real-time feedback to users when they interact with elements like forms or buttons helps them understand their actions and prevents errors. Validation messages for form inputs are crucial to guide users and reduce frustration.

Multimedia Elements: Using images, videos, audio, and interactive elements like sliders and carousels can make the website more engaging and visually appealing.
Personalization: Tailoring the user experience based on individual preferences and behavior can make the website feel more relevant and user-centric.
Remember that interactive web design should not sacrifice usability and accessibility for the sake of novelty. The goal is to strike a balance between creativity and user-friendliness, ensuring that all visitors can easily interact with and enjoy the website.
Interactive web design is a powerful and essential approach to creating engaging and user-friendly websites. By incorporating interactive elements, such as animations, hover effects, interactive forms, and dynamic content, web designers can enhance the user experience and encourage visitors to stay longer on the site.
One of the key benefits of interactive web design is its ability to create a more memorable and enjoyable browsing experience. Users are more likely to connect with a website that responds to their actions and provides instant feedback. This increased engagement can lead to higher user retention, increased conversions, and improved brand perception.
Furthermore, interactive web design plays a crucial role in keeping up with the ever-evolving digital landscape. As technology advances and user expectations grow, static and traditional web designs may fall short in delivering the desired user experience. By embracing interactive design principles, websites can adapt to various devices and cater to different user preferences, ensuring they remain relevant and competitive in the online space.
Additionally, interactive web design fosters better communication and interaction between businesses and their customers. Through interactive elements like chatbots, feedback forms, and interactive product showcases, companies can gather valuable insights, understand their audience better, and provide personalized solutions to their users' needs.
However, while interactive web design can be highly beneficial, it should be approached with care. Overloading a website with unnecessary animations or complex interactions can lead to slow loading times and a cluttered user interface, which can be counterproductive and frustrating for users. Thus, striking the right balance between functionality, aesthetics, and user-friendliness is crucial.
Interactive web design is a vital component of modern web development that can significantly impact user engagement, brand perception, and business success. By creating dynamic, user-centric, and visually appealing experiences, web designers can elevate their websites and ensure they stay ahead in an increasingly competitive digital world.

Selecting a specific niche, like sustainable sourcing or tea menu design, can help you stand out.

Starting with affordable, smaller packages helps attract clients and gain experience.
Workshops and Tastings: Host virtual or in-person tea-tasting sessions to introduce people to tea flavors and build interest in your services.
Consultation Packages: Create packages with specific services, like tea sourcing consultations or branding guidance, to make it easy for clients to get started.
Free Resources: Consider offering free content, like a tea brewing guide, to engage potential clients and showcase your expertise.
5. Market Your Services with Low-Cost Channels
You can spread the word about your consultancy through budget-friendly methods.
Social Media Advertising: Use targeted ads on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to reach tea enthusiasts, cafes, and small tea brands.

SEO for Your Website: Optimize your site with relevant keywords like “tea consultant” and “tea tasting expert” to attract search traffic.
6. Price Your Services Competitively
When starting, keep pricing accessible to attract new clients and build experience.
Tiered Pricing Options: Offer different levels of service, like basic, standard, and premium packages, to cater to different budgets.
Charge Per Session: Offer single-session consultations for first-time clients who want a smaller commitment.
Bundle Services: Create service bundles, such as branding and product development, to add value for clients.
7. Network with Local Tea Businesses
Networking with small tea businesses, cafes, and wellness brands can help you find clients and collaborate on projects.

Virtual Tastings: Send clients small tea samples for a tasting session via Zoom or Google Meet.
Recorded Training Modules: Offer pre-recorded tea education modules on topics like flavor profiles or brewing techniques to make your services accessible.
9. Collect Testimonials and Continuously Improve

Request Reviews: Ask clients for testimonials to add to your website and social media.

Best option for those who want:
Upfront, on-brand personalization

Simply add your content, links, and images to the pages you’re ready to share, then click publish to make your website publicly accessible. Pages can be added, changed, deleted, or hidden at any moment.
When should you start from the template library?
You still get the greatest, most innovative website development experience when you customize a pre-made design.
Using the template collection as a starting point could be ideal if you:
Keep a certain purpose in mind
From portfolio websites to alternatives for restaurants, events, and beauty, the template library offers sections for a variety of use cases and sectors. Starting with a pre-made template design could be easier if your website falls neatly into one of those categories.
Prefer a different type of guidance
You can change and personalize the placeholder sections and pages included in a pre-built design, giving you a clear idea of which elements belong where.
View a template that reflects your style:
Don’t be afraid to start customizing if a template in its library contains the pages or features you require and matches the style of your company or brand.
How to start with Squarespace Blueprint AI
When is the best time to begin using the template library?
To begin using the guided design system, go to the AI website builder and follow these instructions.
Make an account with Squarespace. From your account dashboard, you may make changes to your website, add e-commerce and appointment features, and more.
Give your website a name. Your brand or business name is a nice place to start for most, but you can modify it later. Try its free business name generator if you need some ideas.
Choose a personality for your brand. Choose the personality type that most closely resembles the style of your brand, whether it be professional or eccentric.
Create your home page. Add sections for items, social network accounts, featured content, a contact form, and more, and decide how you want to present your brand.
Include more pages. Include sections that you are certain you will need, such as a comprehensive about page, contact page, online store, or a list of your services. As you work, you’ll be able to see how your pages will appear.
Select a color scheme. Choose from color schemes created by talented designers. If you run a mindfulness-based business, for instance, Design Intelligence will recommend colors that are neutral and align with the vibe you want people to get from your brand and website.
Choose your typefaces. Select typefaces that are serif, sans serif, or a combination of the two. Similar to your color scheme, you will be given carefully chosen combinations to try out in order to select one that complements your branding. For instance, a company that has a more lively image would benefit from using a bold, sans serif typeface.
Ask an AI to help. After you make your selections, Squarespace AI will create pre-filled site language and visuals that are customized to your brand’s personality. You may always adjust your brand personality or re-generate any pre-filled material.
Once everything is complete, publish. Using the Squarespace Website Builder, add unique photos, page names, and other content to give your bespoke website a finishing touch.
Keep in mind that you can always publish the homepage first, then wait to publish the remaining pages while you finish refining them. Once your website is up, you can return at any time to make adjustments.

W2: Self-Publishing Industry
To publish a book, writers have to pitch their ideas to publishing companies, who will then bring their stories to life. Unfortunately, companies don’t just accept any ideas. If the first company a writer pitched to responds with a negative, they have to find another company to share their idea with, and then another if the second falls out too until one comes out with an affirmative.
Recently, writers can publish their books through sites like Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and Apple Books. Though the culture of waiting anxiously for the publishing firms’ good news has dwindled, self-publishing is no easy matter. Publishing firms have specialists who handle book-making, printing, and advertising. Meanwhile, self-publishers have to handle all that and more by themselves.
In an ideal future, self-publishing writers don’t have to fuss over the intricacies of releasing a book. All they need to do is create an account, link their chosen bank, and start publishing. For people who frequent fanfiction websites, that kind of freedom and ease would be the best state of publishing for writers.
Currently, the publishing process is, theoretically, simple. However, there are hurdles writers have to face that make the process difficult.
Issue One: Book Cover
Everyone knows the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. The truth is that appearance makes or breaks a person’s first impression. If your book has a lacklustre cover, it doesn’t matter how good your writing is, readers are going to skim past it.
Covers are the first thing a viewer sees. If the cover is eye-catching, they’ll likely check out the book. However, to make a book cover, one must commission a designer or create one themselves.
If you don’t have the funds, you’ll naturally want to create a book cover yourself. Applications like Canva and Krita allow for such endeavour. However, what happens if you don’t have the creative bone or knowledge to make a convincing cover?
An application that provides free templates for writers to create their book covers from would be helpful. Like Carrd or Squarespace, where users are given templates to build their sites around. The problem with Canva is some elements are copyrighted, which can get writers in trouble when they start earning money. So, an application with free stock that won’t get writers into legal trouble and also gives templates for writers to make easy but good-looking covers would save a lot of time and worry.
Figure 1.1: Screenshot of a page on Carrd; when users want to create a new site, they will be brought here to choose a template or make their own
Figure 1.2: A better view of the available templates
Publishing sites require writers to have cover images for their books before they can be published. Instead of worrying over one’s budget or fussing over how to create a cover from scratch, an application like Carrd but for book covers would tremendously lessen the workload on self-publishing writers. At least these covers can also be used as placeholders until the writer takes off and earns enough money to commission a professional designer.
Issue Two: Full Manuscript
Traditionally, writers pitching their ideas to publishing companies must present their full manuscript before their book can be worked on. The case is still the same now despite our advancement in technology. To publish an e-book, you must have the whole story written out first.
There are publishing sites that allow for chapter-by-chapter releases. Instead of the whole story, readers will receive chapter updates when the writer publishes it. However, that is not the norm, and those sites expect writers to release every week.
On fanfiction sites, writers can update their stories with new chapters whenever they’ve written them. This allows the writer to finish the story at their own pace. Publishing sites can implement this lax method of chapter releases—with the bonus that, to access the new chapters, readers have to pay an amount. This way, writers would be earning money for their work without needing to finish a whole story first.
Figure 2.1: Screenshot of a fanfiction Archive of Our Own; circled in yellow is a button saying "Add Chapter"
When writers have to finish a whole manuscript before publishing, they could feel pressured to make the story perfect. This can drag out the time of publication, which can chip away at the writer’s motivation and will. Instead of allowing the flame of their passion to dwindle with time in their search for perfection, they could publish a few chapters first, then slowly make their way to the end. That way, they can revisit the story whenever they’re free and don’t feel demotivated by the slow progress of their writing.
Issue Three: Income Cashout
On Amazon KDP, cashouts are wired or directly deposited. After reaching the minimum threshold, royalties are transferred at the end of the month. However, the “end of the month” is a whole month after the supposed cashout.
For example: January’s income will only be transferred at the end of March.
Not only does the income take too long to process, but it has to reach a “minimum” threshold to be transferred. So, if you want your money immediately, you’ll face difficulties with speed and requirements.
Instead of a “monthly” cashout, it would be easier to store the income as an asset on the site and then be withdrawn by the writers. On Fiverr, sellers can keep the money they earn on the site and take it out when they want. It's the same on TikTok, where users can exchange points for currency and withdraw it.
Figure 3.1: Screenshot of the Earnings page on Fiverr; circled in red is the button "Withdraw Balance"
This way, writers don’t have to meet a “minimum threshold” for the money to be wired, and can also receive the money whenever they want instead of waiting a full month for it to be deposited.
Conclusion
I mulled long and hard on what industry to write about next. I wanted to talk about a career path I’m interested in. As an aspiring writer, I decided, “Let’s talk about publishing then.”
I started the essay with publishing, but it was broad with challenges I can't relate to. So, I researched self-publishing as that’s how I plan to release my stories. Unfortunately, the challenges can only be resolved by the individuals facing it. I wanted to discuss limitations that those affected cannot deal with.
So, I opted to talk from my perspective and wistful wishes instead. These are my own opinions and would likely be seen as childish musings. Even so, to me, they are “challenges”, and so, they are treated as such.
