i don’t understand any of this stuff, but i thought harry was the owner of his music? with erskine and all that. is it the distribution rights that were sold? sorry, i’m dumb when it comes to this
Tumblr media
These questions are in reference to this anon I got last night:
Tumblr media
As far as I understand (and please someone correct me if I’m wrong or left something out), GMR is a Performance Rights Organization (PRO) like ASCAP, SEASAC, or BMI.
What is a PRO?
The way people and businesses play, purchase, listen to, and consume music has changed drastically in recent times. Revenues related to purchases of physical media and downloads are fading. Now, the attention is turning more than ever towards other sources of royalty revenues, such as performance rights. PROs play a major role collecting these rights and they monitor the compliance of businesses playing music in public.
PROs are in charge of administering the rights of songwriters and publishers. These duties include the collection and distribution of royalties on their behalf. It would be practically impossible for these creators to pick up their royalties one by one. There are too many instances, from digital platforms to physical venues, in which where their rights are being used. This network of agencies work to make sure that people pay all the royalties. In order to do this, they have close contact with different music platforms and checking physical locations, to collect and distribute them on the creators behalf.
x
From what I understand, Azoff’s stated intention in forming this group was to make sure artists were paid their fare share of royalties, given that the rules hadn’t been updated to take into account the current ways people consume music.
From GMR’s website:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
x
Basically, any business that uses music (or portions of music) in a public way must pay to license that music from GMR (or any of the other three PROs).
Who needs to buy a license?
So, if you have a restaurant that plays music in the background, if you use music when people are out on hold when they call your business, if you have a store that plays music while people shop… you have to have a license so that the artists/songwriters are paid each time their work is used.
Tumblr media
More details here x
Are there any exceptions? Yes.
The only exception is for broadcast radio and tv in businesses under 2000 square feet (3750 square feet for restaurants). Note: this rule applies only to “over-the-air” broadcasts, not internet streams or any other source of music. You’ll also be playing any DJ banter, unfiltered lyrics, and commercials for your competitors. Plus, there may be additional fees based on your type of establishment. For example, if you own a restaurant or bar that features live music, if there is a fee for entering your establishment, or if there is a physical activity coordinated with the music (such as public skating or dancing).
x
What is UMPG?
UMPG is an enormous music publishing company that offers a variety of different services. These range from administration services to creative services and much more.
They offer their services to companies including Universal Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount, Disney Europe (and other territories), Viacom, Amazon, HBO, DreamWorks, DreamWorks Animation, Legendary Pictures, Mar Vista Entertainment, NBC and Sesame Workshop, among many others.
Universal Music Publishing Group’s Film & TV Department creates opportunities for and licenses their catalog of songs to film, television, advertising, computer games, and stage production. This is often referred to as ‘synchronization’.
x
UMPG focuses on traditional music publishing, licensing songs for use in film, TV, commercials, and more, and handling royalties for its songwriters. GMR focuses on managing public performance rights for a select group of high-profile artists. It offers more personalized and tailored services but is invitation-only, making it more selective and exclusive than UMPG.
Harry seems to have his music listed with both companies, as they handle different aspects of royalties.
TL;DR As far as I can tell (and I'm far from an expert), this all boils down to:
Erskine Records is primarily concerned with the release and distribution of Harry's music, partnering with Sony for wider reach. This covers the production, distribution, and promotion aspects of his music.
UMPG (Universal Music Publishing Group) manages his publishing rights. They handle songwriting royalties, licensing his music for use in films, TV, commercials, and other media, and collecting royalties when his songs are performed, played on the radio, or streamed online.
GMR (Global Music Rights) deals with performance rights. They ensure that when Styles' music is publicly performed (e.g., at concerts, in public spaces, etc., as explained above), the proper royalties are collected and distributed to him.
Additionally, we don't know how much of the GMR catalog has been sold. Nor do we know what the private equity firm plans to do with what it's bought. From the bit of research I've done, it seems that there is a move toward selling catalogs to private equity firms. For those firms, owning these rights is about more than passive incomeit's about actively enhancing the value of the music through aggressive licensing, smarter technology, and even repackaging or reselling portions of the catalog for a higher return.
More info on that here and here
That's the best I can offer for now.

flashback to FIFA 2023
today was the day that y/n and hamzah would finally watch the world cup together! y/n was hosting a watch party at her apartment, and she had invited mandy, martin, and, of course, her boyfriend hamzah. it was perfect because she knew there would be competition between the four of them, especially since the match was canada vs. brazil.
mandy and martin were rooting for canada, and y/n, naturally, was rooting even harder for brazil. she had made it her mission to make everyone feel sorry for canada and boast about how much better brazil’s team was.
buzz buzz
y/n's phone vibrated with new texts from hamzah:
oye you're gonna lose
canada for the winn
neymar? more like neymar ruin
y/n, is that how you say bad?
did i say something worse??
she giggled as she read hamzah's messages and sent him a 😤 emoji in return. she realized it was her cue to start decorating and getting ready for the watch party. sliding on her neymar brazil jersey and levi jean shorts, she clipped on some gold hoops and a gold jesus necklace.
"perfeito," she said to herself, smiling at her reflection.
before she could start ordering food and decorating her apartment, she noticed her cat, belinda, lounging on the floor.
"oh, belinda, eu tenho um presente especial para você, meu amor," y/n cooed, scooping her up and grabbing a small package her mom had sent her a few months ago. inside was a tiny cat sweater with "brazil" printed in dark green, surrounded by yellow accents.
she went to the kitchen, grabbed some catnip, and let belinda enjoy herself while y/n tried to slip the sweater on.
"eh, isso vai ter que funcionar. temos que fazer com que todos sintam que estão do lado errado,"
—> eh, this will have to work. we have to make everyone feel like they're on the wrong side,"
Tumblr media
final product 😮‍💨 ^^^
y/n grabbed the beers and chips from her pantry and placed them on the living room table, hanging some brazilian flags around the couch. she called a nearby restaurant and ordered some food since she didn’t have time to cook.
as she turned on the tv, a knock echoed through the apartment. belinda freaked out and started scratching the door.
"probably the delivery man," y/n mumbled, opening the door to find hamzah wearing a canada jersey, chain, black sweatpants, and, of course, a hat.
"wow, even for the world cup you manage to look homeless," y/n snickered, taking hamzah's hat off to let his curls breathe.
"okay, but at least i don't look like a fool," he said, pecking y/n’s forehead.
"oh, shut up," y/n said, shoving him inside.
"hey, they left something outside your door, by the way," a familiar voice chimed in.
"mandy!" y/n screamed, running to hug her friend.
"y/n!" mandy squealed as they giggled together until martin coughed.
"greetings, martin," y/n said, taking the food from his hands.
"greetings, y/n," martin nodded back.
meanwhile, hamzah had made himself comfortable on the couch, and belinda crawled up to him. "y/n, what did you do to your poor cat?" hamzah asked, wide-eyed.
"what?" y/n said, suddenly worried belinda might be hurt. she looked at her cat and then at hamzah’s expression, and she burst out laughing. "i thought belinda was hurt! you scared me," she said, trying to catch her breath.
"she is! she's being humiliated," hamzah teased, sticking his tongue out at her.
thirty minutes later, y/n had set up all the food, and they spent the time making fun of each other's teams. with only fifteen minutes left before the game, they turned on the tv, and hamzah decided to strike up a conversation.
"so, let's say canada wins," he began.
"which they won’t," y/n cut in.
"lies. if canada wins, i take you to a party/karaoke, and you pay."
"ha! okay, fine. if brazil wins, i take you to a brazilian party/karaoke, and you pay—with your slushy money."
"it's serious stuff!"
"mhm."
soon, the game was about to start. hamzah grabbed belinda and held on to her.
"filho de puta," y/n hissed under her breath as the players sang the anthems. neymar jr. was the first to grab the ball, getting dangerously close to the goal.
"amor! entre por favor!" y/n cried, standing up.
"why are you calling him husband?" hamzah asked.
"don't worry about it, burro," y/n smiled.
neymar shot for the goal, but a canadian player blocked it. "let's go!" hamzah yelled, jumping up, startling belinda, who meowed at him.
"that’s right, belinda. canada’s the best—they’re going to get us the win."
"what do you mean, 'us'? she’s a brazilian cat."
"not today, she’s canadian."
"no, she isn’t." as y/n and hamzah bickered, the game intensified by the minute.
"you two are way more competitive than we are," mandy laughed.
"yeah, feels like i’m watching two fox commentators argue," martin added.
through the tv, y/n could tell neymar was getting tired after about thirteen missed shots, all blocked by canada.
"your boo thang is getting tired. they might have to sub him out," hamzah snickered.
"you’re so stupid. you have no idea how this works," y/n said, flicking him.
"hey! wait, hey!" hamzah suddenly shouted, his voice rising as neymar scored.
"te amo neymar! você é tão sexy!" y/n screamed, grabbing belinda and kissing her all over.
belinda purred, licking her back as y/n taunted hamzah, who was now pouting.
"oh, don’t be a baby. there are still forty more minutes," mandy said.
hamzah grumbled, clearly upset. y/n ran into her room and pulled out something from under her bed. she returned to the living room and tossed it to hamzah. it was a framed photo of the two of them from when they first started dating. both were holding guaranás, hands intertwined, from when they first met in brazil, where they shared their first kiss—all because of one soda.
hamzah looked up at y/n, who had her arms crossed, and then stood up to hug her. "you really forget i’m canadian too," she said, squeezing his shoulder.
hamzah smiled, and the couple decided to end their fiery debate. they turned off the tv, much to the relief of mandy and martin, who were happy to see the tension between the couple dissipate. martin and mandy politely declined an invitation to continue watching the game at a bar, so hamzah and y/n bid them farewell and drove off to the bar.
after arriving at the bar, they were greeted with the lively atmosphere of soccer fans chanting and cheering. y/n and hamzah found a spot in the corner to watch the game on the big screen. as they sat down, y/n's competitive spirit returned. she looked over at hamzah, who was still wearing his canada jersey, and decided to tease him a little more.
"you know, i’m still not over that canadian block. i need something to wash down the bitterness," she joked.
hamzah chuckled, "oh really? what do you have in mind?"
y/n smirked and leaned in closer, "i need a drink—something with a twist."
without explaining further, she grabbed the waiters attention and said "i need two coronas and five limes,"
the waiter nodded in response and quickly brought them to her.
hamzah watched her curiously as she ordered.
"what are you going to do with the limes?" hamzah asked, raising an eyebrow.
"you'll find out," y/n smirked as the drinks arrived.
once the drinks were on the table, y/n picked them
up in her hands and used her free hand to lead hamzah to the car, she made hamzah hold the drinks and limes as she took control of the wheel and started a speedy commute back to her apartment.
once they arrived at y/n’s apartment, she led him to her bedroom and shoved him on the bed.
y/n started unbuttoning hamzah's shirt. as it came off, revealing his chiseled abs, y/n was in awe. she resumed her lustful actions, removing her shirt, revealing her black lace bra. she ripped her pants off and climbed on top of him, grabbing a lime and squeezing it over his abs, sucking up the juice as it trickled down.
a moan escaped hamzah's mouth as y/n sucked harder and faster. she was too distracted to notice hamzah trying to say something. he picked her up, changing their positions, and unclipped her bra. he squeezed the lime over her already hard nipples and started sucking like there was no tomorrow. y/n grabbed his hair, pushing him lower to her breasts. after letting him suck a little more, she grabbed his chin and started kissing him all over.
y/n lay on hamzah's chest, breathing heavily.
"para tudo bailao!" he sung with a raspy voice.
y/n slapped his chest playfully. "you always ruin the moment!"
"yeah, but it's just to get closer to you," he said, grinning.
"in brazil, we’d call you monte de merda," y/n said, snickering.
"what’s that?"
"don’t worry about it. if i were you, i’d worry about canada losing—"
y/n was cut off by hamzah kissing her.
“shush babe, don’t forget your paying.” hamzah mumbled into y/n’s hair.
“paying how? we’re home now.” y/n smiled looking up, making eye contact with hamzahs bambi eyes.
“com beijos.” hamzah grinned. proud of the small amount of words he picked up on by y/n.
hamzah then covered y/n’s face with kisses all over.
“ah hamzah stop, your acting like belinda.” y/n smirked.
“my kisses are clean!” hamzah scoffed dramatically.
“oh god not this sassyness now,” y/n sighed.
“listen, at least i’m not as dramatic as your ‘husband’ neymar.” hamzah shrugged giving y/n one more kiss on her nose.
y/n’s face turned a light pink, “touché,”
y/n cuddled up closer to hamzah, her head resting on his chest. she could feel the steady rhythm of his heartbeat, a comforting reminder of the love they shared. with her arm draped over him and his hand gently rubbing her back, y/n sighed contentedly.
"i guess we're both winners tonight," she whispered, feeling his warmth enveloping her.
hamzah smiled, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "yeah, but i think i won the jackpot," he teased softly.
y/n chuckled, closing her eyes as the exhaustion of the day finally caught up with her. "we’ll call it a tie," she murmured, nuzzling into him.
with hamzah’s arm wrapped securely around her, she felt safe and cherished, ready to drift off into a peaceful sleep, knowing that no matter what team won or lost, they had each other.
that’s what i call ‘bom espírito esportivo’ aka good sportsmanship ⚽️

I read this interesting post:
https://www.tumblr.com/rocket-69/691648665881886720/its-sixxers-fallout-fallen-knight-let-me?source=share
That discusses how while Victor is a lovable character he's a product designed to lure Courier Six into New Vegas. This post got my brain juices flowing so bad I made Tumblr glitch with how much I tried writing in the tags. So I had to make my own post.
Tumblr media
I find it EXTREMELY interesting how all the AIs Mr. House created while fun and lovable are also products.
Jane being a copy of Mr. House's favorite girl a starlet he dated before the Great War. She's designed to entertain him similarly to how the workers at Gomorrah "entertain" customers.
Jane: "Mr. House has a lot of needs, sugar. I take care of all of them, and a lady doesn't kiss and tell."
There's also an emotional aspect to the services she provides him.
If he wanted her just for sex he wouldn't have specifcally scanned her brain. He could've gotten anyone. While famous Jane wasn't even a star but a starlet. A young actress with aspirations to become a star.
While he might have liked Jane's personality which is why he picked her. Ultimately their relationship was a business transaction.
Raul: "She said they never, um... don't make me spell it out, boss. Anyway, she said all he wanted to do was scan her brain and make her dress up in different outfits."
Mr. House scanned her brain to create an artificial relationship (separate from the real Jane) designed to satisfy his needs post Great War. Mr. House had the technology to save the real Jane but chose not to.
A lot of people also seem misunderstand the reason why Mr. House doesn't have sex with Jane. It's because he physically COULDN'T.
Ignoring cut content. Mr. House was already attached to the machine keeping him alive. He's connected to an Electrode-studded command helmet on the day of the Great War.
It's how Mr. House protected New Vegas:
Tumblr media
Raul: "I remember there were some weird stories about him, especially near the end." NEAR THE END.
Mr. House takes Jane's personality to the EXTREME. Designing her to stoke and inflate his ego by being able to only say positive things about him. Jane is a product designed to provide Mr. House a service all while managing his snow globe collection. She doesn't even respond when the player says goodbye to her.
Then there's Mr. Vegas who was an AI created before the Great War. A charming DJ for Radio New Vegas to play music but also spread the news.
Mr. House also did to the same to the tribes by turning them into The Strip AKA a money making product.
He molds people into exactly what HE wants for his benefit.
The BIGGEST example of this was Benny! However that didn't work because Benny is human. Benny had his own ambitions and desires.
Mr House: "I have to think that he found out about the Platinum Chip and mistakenly convinced himself that he could use it to his own ends."
Mr. House even flat out admits it to the player.
Mr. House: "Benny has led the Chairmen ever since I recruited his tribe seven years ago. Until his recent misbehavior, I'd planned to make him my protege. Maybe if I'd begun grooming him sooner, none of this would've happened..."
Protege meaning a person who is guided and supported by an older and more experienced or influential person. He wanted to GUIDE Benny into a specific role. Which the player can even ask about.
Courier Six: "What use would you have for a protege?"
Mr. House: "To achieve my aims, I require a capable human agent to perform certain . . . tasks."
HE DOES THE SAME WITH COURIER SIX!!!
Testing them to see if they can get to New Vegas on their own.
This awesome post goes into more details about it:
https://www.tumblr.com/maddymoreau/741007168343588864/veronicaroyce-it-always-bothered-me-that-mr?source=share
Mr. House even mentions you being a more-than-suitable replacement for the role he wanted Benny in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ALSO during your first meeting with Mr. House this exchange can happen:
Courier: "Why the VIP treatment? I'm just a courier."
Mr. House: "Oh, don't be coy. You've been playing a high-stakes game ever since Victor dug you out of the ground. Don't be afraid to admit it."
DON'T BE AFRAID TO ADMIT IT. HE'S TEACHING YOU!!!! HE'S GUIDING YOU INTO THE ROLE HE WANTS!!!
Mr. House: "You see that you and I are of a different stripe, don't you? We don't have to dream that we're important. We are."
While Mr. House may act like he's above feelings and relationships. HE'S NOT!!!! It's why the player's karma can affect his ending SO MUCH!!!!
Another incredible post discussing it:
https://www.tumblr.com/maddymoreau/740922764666585088/veronicaroyce-something-i-think-a-lot-about-is?source=share
A lot of people think Mr. House is an idiot for picking Benny but people forget Benny's drive. Hell just rewatch the intro cutscene where he shoots Courier Six.
Mr. House being human is also WHY he picks Benny despite Swanks being far more loyal. Swanks is an unimaginative employee.
Tumblr media
MR. HOUSE LIKE'S BENNY'S PERSONALITY. HE NOT STUPID HE KNOWS WHAT BENNY PERSONALITY IS LIKE!!!
Mr. House: "I have a certain tolerance for greed. I expect my business partners to be self-interested - but smarty so."
However he misjudged Benny and even admits it.
Mr. House: "Obviously, I miscalculated his drive for supremacy."
In the Yes Man ending we learn.
Yes Man: "I found some code snippets in one of Mr. House's databanks that will let me, um, reprogram my personality! To be a little more assertive, basically!"
Meaning while small Mr. House has programming to allow characters like Victor and Jane free will. He WON'T use it though because he wants the specific services and relationships they provide him.
HE'S A WEIRDO CONTROL FREAK WHO ACTS LIKE HE'S ABOVE HUMAN EMOTIONS BUT HE'S NOT AND I LOVE IT!!!!
In the ending with high good karma it even says: "Mr. house afforded him/her every luxury at his disposal in the Lucky 38, out of gratitude - and a quiet sense of pride for his choice in lieutenants."
Of course because of his ego (look at the obituary that appears when he dies) but GRATITUDE. Spoiling Courier Six with all the luxuries he can provide doesn't sound like a basic employee and employer relationship he likes to act like what they have is.
Mr. House: "In any case... this is an employer - employee relationship. I've given you an assignment, and the directions are clear."
If you want to take the G.E.C.K script notes into consideration they even says:
Mr. House: ''You know, I've had thousands of employees in my time. Few met my expectations, fewer still surpassed them.'' {You know, I never had much time for a family - if I did, you'd be the daughter/son I wish I'd had. Benny was almost like a son to me, but well...}
Courier Six being loyal to Mr. House means so much more to him then he'd ever want to admit. EVEN AT THE END OF THE GAME WHEN THE PLAYER HAS FINISHED THEIR WORK AT THE SECOND BATTLE OF HOOVER DAM HE AUTOMATICALLY GETS EXCITED DISCUSSING THEIR NEXT PLANS!!!!!

The Role of a Wedding DJ in Making Your Reception Memorable
Tumblr media
The wedding reception is the highlight of any wedding day. It's the time for the newlyweds and their guests to let loose, dance, and celebrate the joyous occasion. And while the wedding venue, décor, and food are all important elements in creating a memorable wedding reception, the role of a wedding DJ is equally crucial.
A wedding DJ is responsible for setting the tone and atmosphere of the wedding reception. They keep the energy high, create a fun and entertaining environment, and ensure that the dance floor stays full throughout the night. A professional wedding DJ has the ability to read the crowd and adjust the music selection accordingly to keep everyone engaged and entertained.
The wedding DJ typically plays a variety of music genres to cater to all guests. This includes current hits, classic wedding songs, and even traditional music for cultural or religious ceremonies. They also help the bride and groom choose the perfect first dance song and other special dances such as the father-daughter and mother-son dances.
The wedding DJ is also responsible for making announcements throughout the reception. They keep the guests informed of important events such as cake cutting, bouquet tossing, and garter removal. They also work closely with the wedding planner and other vendors to ensure that everything runs smoothly and according to schedule.
But the role of a wedding DJ goes beyond just playing music and making announcements. They are also responsible for creating a personalized and unique experience for the bride and groom and their guests. A skilled wedding DJ will take the time to get to know the couple's music tastes, personalities, and wedding theme, and incorporate these elements into the music selection and overall vibe of the reception.
One way that a wedding DJ can make a reception memorable is by creating a customized playlist. This means working with the couple to select songs that are meaningful to them, or have a special place in their relationship. This personalized playlist not only creates a unique atmosphere for the reception, but it also helps to create lasting memories for the couple and their guests.
Another way that a wedding DJ can make a reception memorable is by incorporating fun and interactive elements into the music selection. This could include playing games or having dance-offs to get everyone involved and having fun. A skilled DJ can also mix songs seamlessly, creating a continuous flow of music that keeps the dance floor packed all night long.
In addition, a wedding DJ can help to create a memorable reception by providing high-quality equipment and sound. A professional DJ will have top-of-the-line speakers, lighting, and other equipment to create a stunning visual and audio experience for guests. They will also have backup equipment in case of any technical difficulties.
When hiring a wedding DJ, it's important to choose a professional who has experience working with weddings. They should have a portfolio of previous events they have worked on, and be able to provide references from past clients. It's also important to have clear communication with the DJ leading up to the wedding day, so that they have a clear understanding of your expectations and preferences.
In conclusion, the role of a wedding DJ is integral to creating a memorable wedding reception. They set the tone and atmosphere of the event, create a personalized experience for the couple and their guests, and ensure that everyone has a great time on the dance floor. By working with a professional wedding DJ, couples can rest assured that their reception will be a fun, unforgettable celebration of their love.

Hear Santa Barbara, I swear it's calling me
Tumblr media
pairing: carlton lassiter x oc
summary: a private case leads the three members of psych detective agency to a nightclub, where marley goes undercover as a dancer to find out more information. the head detective at sbpd enters the same club one night following a tip called into the station and is taken aback by what he sees.
wc: 3.6k
warnings: mentions of drugs and gun violence
a/n: bruh. this is the longest thing i've ever written and i smashed it out in a couple of days. this show has sunk it's claws into me big time. also please forgive the details of the case if it makes no sense, it was the thing i struggled with the most lol
Things had been slow going at the Psych detective agency lately. The residents of Santa Barbara seemingly on their best behaviour for the past two weeks, and while one would normally appreciate a low crime rate, fake psychics with unmedicated ADHD and nothing else to keep them occupied did not share the sentiment. The lack of crime meant a lack of cases, with Chief Vick responding to all his inquiries for work with a blanket ‘if we need you, we’ll call you. Goodbye Mr. Spencer.’
But things started looking up when a young woman came by the office seeking his services, explaining that she worked at a local nightclub as a dancer but was recently blacklisted after overhearing a tense conversation between the club manager and one of the bartenders. Not only that, but she had the feeling some of her fellow dancers were involved in something sketchy. She was sure it was something illegal, but she didn’t want to go to the police out of fear of facing repercussions and getting her friends in trouble.
During a busier week, Shawn would’ve dismissed the case outright as it initially appeared to be nothing more than an employment dispute, but she was insistent that there was more to it and it piqued his interest. The allure of the club and its dancers certainly helped sway him too, and so he called a staff meeting to discuss the plan.
‘If we’re going to find out more about what’s going on in this place, we need a man on the inside.’
Though she was suspicious of where this was going, Marley conceded to his point, ‘makes sense.’
‘And because we here at Psych detective agency believe in equal opportunity employment, I’ve decided that the best man for the job, as is in many such cases, is a woman,’ this attempt at ass-kissing was accompanied by a serene smile and clasped hands, an admittedly good impression of a CEO giving a press release.
And while this would’ve been received well by investors, Marley wasn’t buying it, ‘I don’t think so.’
‘Aww come on, Marls! It’ll be fun! And I’ve seen that stripper pole in your apartment, I know you’ll do great!’
‘My unquestionable talent isn’t the issue here, there’s a reason I only dance in the privacy of my own home. No way in hell I’m getting up on a stage in front of a club full of people!’
‘Don’t be like that, I’ve seen you let loose during nights out before!’
‘When I’m more than a few drinks deep sure! But I don’t think management would appreciate me showing up to work drunk, nor would it help me effectively gather information.’
‘I don’t know,’ Gus piped up from his desk, ‘you’re a lot more charismatic and chatty when you drink, so it could work in our favour.'
‘This is true, good point, Gus! Plus I'm sure the dancers indulge at least a little, employee discounts and all that.'
Still not convinced and feeling like she was being ganged up on, she went on the offensive, ‘why do I have to do this anyway? Why can’t you guys pretend to be a bartender or a DJ or something?’
Shawn seemed to mull this idea over for a second before his eyes lit up, ‘hey that’s not a bad idea, gives us something fun- I mean, productive to do while we check the place out.’
A fanciful expression slowly came over Gus’ face, followed by a smug smirk, ‘yeah. Yeah! That could work, I was known in high school for my killer playlists so I bet I could rock a DJ gig.’
‘Dude what? No,’ came Shawn's indignant reply, like the mere idea had insulted him, ‘people loved my playlists in high school, if anyone’s going to be the DJ it’s going to be me!’
‘You’re dreaming, Shawn! It’s not just high school either, my Spotify playlists get a ton of views and likes! Not to mention all the followers I have because they just can’t get enough of me!’
‘That’s only because I use your account so all my playlists are under your name, they’re all there for me not you!’
‘What do you mean you use my account? I’m the only one paying for it!’
Realising that this was going nowhere and they could be here all day if she didn’t intervene, Marley begrudgingly conceded to the plan.
‘Ugh! Fine! But if I’m doing this, I get a bigger commission because I’m doing a lot of legwork here!’
Pleased to hear this, not only because she agreed to his plan but also because her loud concession distracted Gus from his treachery, Shawn immediately turned his attention back to her.
‘Not to mention armwork, you know, because of the pole-‘
‘Shut up, Shawn.’
~}i{~
In order to prepare for going undercover, Marley met up with the client to get some advice and background information on the club and its staff. She wasn’t a real nightclub person so it took a bit of coaching to be able to act the part and maintain it for the duration of her shift, but the clients help was invaluable and with the added bonus of a fake resume, she quickly got the job.
The mid-morning peace of the Psych office the morning after her club debut was disturbed by the sound of the front door opening. The two men sitting inside raised their heads from their phones to see Marley enter the room nursing a cup of coffee with her eyes hidden behind her sunglasses.
‘Well, if it isn’t our own little Dita Von Tease! We were wondering when you’d roll in!’
Shawn’s boisterous greeting was met with a wince and a hiss that made Gus think of a vampire braving the light of day after a deep sleep, though he knew better than to voice that comparison. Marley could be downright scary when irritated.
‘Please lower your voice, I’m still waking up,’ Marley hissed, hoping for some grace.
‘Sorry,’ Shawn, having the same fear instilled in him, lowered his voice, ‘I’m just excited to hear how your first night went.’
She took a moment to situate herself on the couch by the window before responding.
'It went alright, the other girls were welcoming enough but I didn't get a chance to really talk to any of them,’ she paused to take a sip of her coffee, ‘but I did overhear one of the girls, Amber, having a pretty intense phone call. I asked another girl if she knew anything about it out of ‘concern’ and she said that Amber had a knack for getting herself in to trouble, always managing to find the wrong crowd, but that this was the worse she’d seen her.’
Gus, feeling it was safe to speak up now she had comfortably situated herself, asked the next question, ‘What was the phone call about?’
‘From what I could gather it sounded like she had some bad debts but that she had a plan to pay them back.’
Shawn and Gus shared a knowing nod and a pensive look, ‘they always do, but it rarely works out well.’
‘Kasey, one of the bottle girls, also let it slip that the relationship between Amber and Cole, one of the bartenders, is less than strictly professional.'
‘Oooh, scandalous~’ chimed in Shawn with a wiggle of his eyebrows.
‘But it’s still sounding like a case of a toxic work environment and personal dramas, which isn’t great but it’s not a crime,’ came Gus’ assessment.
‘Hmm, I don’t know,’ part of her agreed with Gus, but she just had a funny feeling about it all, ‘I mean that’s probably the case, but I think I’m gonna stick around for a bit longer, something doesn’t feel right. Maybe having you guys there as an extra set of eyes would help too.’
‘Hey, Marley, it’s okay,’ she turned to Shawn, drawn in by his serious tone, ‘if you’re really liking this job there’s no shame in admitting it. I’m sure you could cut back on your hours at the hospital, or split your night shifts between there and the club if you really wanted to.’
Tired from the late night and lacking the energy to berate him, Marley simply grabbed one of the throw pillows off the couch and spiked it at his head.
~}i{~
‘God I hate places like this.’
‘Are there any places you do like? And remember to keep a low profile, the chief isn’t sure if there’s anything to this tip suggesting suspicious activity but we’re better off just hanging back and seeing what we can find.'
‘I don’t need you telling me how to do my job, O’Hara.’
‘I’m not telling you how to do your job I’m just- Listen. Why don’t we just go over to the bar and see what we can get off the bartender?’
‘Fine by me.’
Juliet led the way to the bar, with Lassiter following close behind her trying to avoid the sea of dancers around them.
‘You’d think a place like this would be a fire hazard with the amount of people-‘ Lassiter’s tirade was cut short when Juliet came to a sudden stop in front of him, causing him to crash into her.
His demand to know what the hold-up was died in his throat at Juliet's bewildered words.
‘Is that Marley?’
‘Huh? Where?’
Lassiter quickly looked around, trying to spot the woman who had recently taken up a sizeable piece of real estate in his brain, though it would take an immense amount of torture to get him to admit it.
‘Over there, on the raised platform!’ she shouted over her shoulder, raising her voice both to be heard over the music and in disbelief.
Lassiter followed her direction and his mouth went dry.
There, on the raised platform just as his partner had said, was Marley. Though it took a second for his brain to process it was really her as she had just dipped into an inverted position on the chrome pole in the centre of the platform.
As she spun around and returned to an upright position, he was able to appreciate the sparkly little number she had on, the black fringe mesmerising and the glossy platform heels making her legs appear to go on forever, maybe even making them an equal height for once. Not that he minds her short stature, if he gave it more than a moments thought he might even realise that he found it cute. And though it would be nice to be a bit closer to her lips (just the thought of leaning down to reach is enough to make his back ache), the smile that graces them as she looks up at him from beneath her eyelashes makes the phantom pain truly non-existent. Plus, he’d be lying if he said he didn’t have thoughts of sweeping her up off her feet, a small thing like her would probably fit in his pocket, his to protect, to cherish and keep to himself-
‘Carlton!’
He was pulled from his train of thought by his first name, which is used sparingly enough to succeed in getting his attention when Juliet's repeated calls of ‘Lassiter’ failed.
He blinked a few times in quick succession to clear his mind and pursed his lips to try and regain some composure before responding, unsure if his mouth had been hanging open like some simpleton.
‘Yes?’
He was so focused on appearing composed that he didn’t notice the knowing smile on his partners lips.
‘I was just saying that knowing our track record, if one of the three musketeers is here then the other two can’t be far behind. I’m sure it’s no coincidence we’re both at a place of interest, and I doubt Marley would work at a place like this otherwise,’ her words were tinged with amusement, both at Lassiter’s reaction to seeing their friend/colleague dancing on the small stage, and at the feeling that once they ran into her accomplices the night would become a lot more interesting.
Her words made perfect sense to Lassiter, but he couldn’t help but think she belonged up there. Maybe in another life, if nursing didn't work out. Or is this how she paid off her student debt? He knew she worked while she attended university but he would've remembered if she ever mentioned that this was what she did. This plus the fact that if he’d never seen her here, the thought never would have crossed his mind because it seemed so out of character for the usually reserved woman.
Feeling he was beginning to get lost in his thoughts again, he shook his head and turned his back to the stage (as much as it pained him) to gather them.
‘You’re right, the tweedles have to be here somewhere sticking their noses where they don’t belong.'
Keeping an eye out for the troublesome duo (and as much as one on Marley as he could afford to without failing back into his previous train of thought), the detectives continued on their way to the bar. Though their search for the psychic and his assistant didn’t take long when they finally flagged down the bartender and were met with Gus’ friendly face.
‘Evening, what can I get y’all?’
His smile was so disarming and he played the part of a stranger so well that it took them both a second to react.
‘Gus?’
‘Guster?!’
The joint exclamations of his name seemed to snap Gus out of character and he immediately started fidgeting with a glass, knowing the jig was up, ‘uhh, h-hey guys! Fancy seeing you here, small world huh?’
Feeling a headache coming on the closer he got to Spencer, Lassiter rubbed his eyes and ground out ‘yeah, tiny.’
Torn between exasperation and amusement, not expecting to run into one of the guys so quickly, Juliet took the lead, ‘what are you doing here, Gus?’
‘Well, I figured with the rising cost of living it wouldn’t hurt to get a second job- third job, really- hard to believe the state of the economy nowadays, huh? Anyway, you two have fun and I’ll see you at the station the next time we get called in,’ trying his best not to act suspicious or give up the real reason he was here, Gus turned away intending to serve a club-goer on the other side of the bar where the duties of his job would keep him safe from the detectives’ questions.
‘Hold it!’
If only he could be so lucky.
The emotional rollercoaster this night was turning out to be relieved Lassiter of the last thread of his patience, ‘you expect us to believe that? That you and Marley just happen to both suddenly be working at a nightclub with reports of suspicious activity? Fat chance! Now where the hell is Spencer, I know he’s here somewhere!’
Gus tried one last Hail Mary, the ever-reliable act of playing dumb.
‘Wait, Marley’s here too?’
The glare he received from Lassiter was enough to change his tune.
‘Right, sorry. Last I saw Shawn he was leaving the DJ booth, in the middle of his set I might add, which if I got to be the DJ like I wanted to I would never do,’ the last part was laced with bitterness and the smug assurance that he would’ve remained professional where Shawn did not, but Juliet chose to ignore it, focusing on the matter at hand.
‘Which way did he go?’
‘Off to the left, through the employee only door, he might’ve been following someone but I’m not sure.’
‘Right, thanks Gus.’
Leaving the pseudo-bartender to his devices, Lassiter led the way to the door off to the side of the large room marked ‘employees only’, determined to figure out just what the hell was going on here.
~}i{~
The club was evacuated following some gunshots coming from the backrooms, with police cars arriving quickly outside. Having been a few days since the trio were first given the case, tensions within the club had finally risen enough to come to a head.
Not long after the two detectives made their way into the employee only section, they came across Shawn in the middle of a confrontation involving Amber, Cole, the manager, and a local drug supplier.
In his usual dramatic fashion, Shawn explained the situation to the detectives, telling them how Amber had fallen into some bad debts and went to her manager, a close friend of hers, for help. Having romantic feelings for the girl, the manager was quick to do whatever she asked, and with his connections from his time at the club, he worked out a deal to move some product through the place in order to ease her debts.
Cole, the bartender and Amber’s boyfriend, started catching on to the fact that something was up between the two, and feeling scorned, he called in a tip to the police station, hoping the cops would take care of the situation for him by punishing the both of them. The couples bad luck continued though, with the supplier becoming unhappy with the small amount of drugs being sold and coming down himself to see what the issue was. He, like the detectives, entered upon a tense situation, with the three employees having a shouting match.
The gunshots came when Cole lost his temper, blaming their manager for the trouble Amber was in, as well as the jealousy he felt, and attacked him. Not being in his right mind, the bullets missed their target and he was quickly subdued and all four of them taken into custody.
~}i{~
Having been corralled outside with the crowd, Marley missed the excitement and the big resolution of the case. She was standing on the sidewalk hugging her arms to her chest, trying to fight off the chill in the air while waiting to hear from the others, when she suddenly felt a piece of fabric fall over her shoulders. She clutched at the warm material to find a large suit jacket, a familiar scent filling her nose and its owner moving to stand beside her.
'Here. Don't want you to catch a cold,' he tried to play it cool, but there was an undeniable softness in the detective’s voice.
Though she shouldn’t be considering the situation, she was surprised by Lassiter’s sudden presence.
'Thanks, Lassie,' the small act of kindness as well as his close proximity warmed her better than the jacket ever could, 'my clothes are in the dressing room but I wasn't sure if I was good to go back inside yet.’
‘Well, we’ve apprehended the shooter and the three other people involved, but the rest of the staff will need to be questioned.’
‘Me included?’
‘The more information the better, but I can take your statement while you get your stuff.’
‘Thanks, Lassie,’ she thanked him again, knowing that the sooner she got her stuff the sooner she could leave and head home, ‘I appreciate it.’
He held out his arm for her to take, and seeing her raised eyebrow and silent question, explained the gesture, ‘the last thing we need is you tripping over in those heels and eating pavement on the way to the dressing room. I don’t really want to have to call for a medic on top of everything else,’ he gave the heeled boots in question a pointed look, appreciating her bare legs as his gaze travelled downwards.
He was right, by the way. The heels did bring them closer together in height. But what he didn’t anticipate with the change in height was the new details of her face it revealed to him. Her eyes weren’t just a deep brown, but contained different shades, like the bark of a strong tree that was hidden deep inside a forest, with sunlight shifting through the trees to highlight the different grooves and hidden shades. He also noticed for the first time the faint freckles smattered across her nose and cheeks.
Her airy laughter and warm grip on his forearm brought him back from another rogue train of thought, managing to catch it before it went completely off the rails.
‘God what is going on with me tonight?’
He cleared his throat and started to lead her back inside the club, hoping that his sanity would return once she was out of his coat, into her own clothes, and on her way home.
‘I don’t even know how you manage to dance in those things.’
His comment brought a blush to her cheeks, turning her gaze to the ground under the guise of watching where she was stepping, her words coming out with a shy laugh, ‘you saw that did you?’
‘Only a bit of it,’ he tried to hide how taken he was by the display by faking a tone of nonchalance, ‘my attention quickly turned to Guster behind the bar.’
‘Oh God, don’t even start on that,’ her embarrassment was quickly forgotten as she rolled her eyes at the mention of her friend and his assigned role, ‘who got to do what was a big fight between the two, I gave up trying to mediate as soon as it started getting physical. Honestly, it was like watching two children have a slap fight.’
The charged air between them cleared as Marley recounted the childish squabble between Gus and Shawn over who got to play the coveted role of DJ, her fondness for the two idiots evident in her voice.
A smile made it’s way onto the detectives face as he listened to her talk, and he spent the rest of the night basking in the faint scent she had left on his jacket.

When poet John Keats wrote in “Ode on a Grecian Urn” that “beauty is truth, truth beauty,” he probably didn’t have AI influencers in mind.
Perhaps he should have. Back in April, Fanvue, an AI-infused creator platform that falls somewhere between OnlyFans and Cameo in terms of services, launched what it’s calling the “world’s first beauty pageant for AI creators.” On Monday, the World AI Creator Awards announced the contest’s 10 semifinalists. Drawn from a pool of more than 1,500 applicants, they are vying for the chance to make a liar out of Keats—and a prize package valued at about $20,000.
Amongst those 10 finalists, you’ll find Seren Ay, a stunning Turkish redhead who is sometimes pictured doing jobs traditionally held by men in her country, like electrical lineman or firefighter. (She’s also a time traveler, posting “photos” with velociraptors and the first Turkish president, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.)
Then there’s Aiyana Rainbow, a Romanian biker babe/DJ whose creators have decided is queer—something they advertise through both her name and her shock of perfectly ruffled rainbow hair—and Kenza Layli, a hijab-wearing influencer from Morocco who already hawks everything from personal hygiene products to local tourism. (This makes sense considering that a recent study found that almost half of Gen Z respondents in the US and UK were “more likely” to be interested in a brand if they knew it had an AI spokesperson.)
While Fanvue’s finalists run the global gamut in terms of origins, they’re also all capital-B beautiful, each possessing a supernatural combination of a buff (but not too buff) body, a stunning face, and the kind of effervescent personality that only really exists in influencer culture. Their hobbies and pet causes (Fashion! Inclusion! Travel! Hormonal imbalances!) are blandly interesting enough to make them palatable to followers and brands alike. Their image captions—some of which are written by actual humans and some of which are written by AI—are generally full of platitudes about how cool life is.
While all that might seem surface-level at best, these totally fake beauties aren’t all that different from real-life pageant participants, especially in 2024. Hilary Levey Friedman, a sociologist who studies beauty pageants and whose mom was a former Miss America, says that she doesn’t think the idea of an AI beauty pageant is a big deal considering “the long-standing practice in pageants of enhancing what you have,” whether that means surgery, hair extensions, fake tans, petroleum jelly teeth, body contour, or “chicken cutlets.”
In social media posts and headshots in particular, Friedman says, pageant contestants often use airbrushing and camera tricks to make their images pop, something that’s never been seen as a negative in the industry. When push comes to shove, though, there’s still a physical human behind that account and on that stage, living and breathing under all those lights and filters.
What makes an AI pageant different, Friedman asserts, is that Fanvue’s contestants are products of their creators. “They’re drawing on all these stereotypes that we have about what a ‘beautiful woman’ is,” she says, “and people who tend to use AI might have a different idea of what an attractive woman might be. She might have pink hair, but she’ll still be within the realm of traditional beauty, with a thin body or not a lot of moles on her face.”
For the record, Fanvue’s contest, like human beauty pageants, will anoint a winner based on more than appearances. Unlike some of those contests, though, the World AI Creator Awards are looking for things like “social media clout” and how well their creators used prompts to create their contestants. Winners are set to be announced later this month.
Berat Gungor, one of Seren Ay’s creators, says that “in AI, you actually can’t create an ugly face,” though he’s careful to note that no human faces are ever truly ugly. While it’s easy enough for image-generating newbies to end up with blurred features and weird hands, Gungor says his experienced team was able to create an initial pool of 300 beautiful women in Stable Diffusion, ultimately picking Seren Ay’s face from the crowd because “she looked like a real person.”
Fanvue’s pool of thin, beautiful, mostly light-skinned finalists reflects what The Washington Post found when it tasked Dall-E, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion with creating beautiful women. Stating that the programs tended to “steer users toward a startlingly narrow vision of attractiveness,” the Post reported last week that in the thousands of images it generated, almost all were thin, light- to medium-skinned, and young. (Just 2 percent of the “beautiful woman” images showed visible signs of aging.)
In some ways, those images are reflective of the pool they pull from. “How people are represented in the media, in art, in the entertainment industry—the dynamics there kind of bleed into AI,” OpenAI’s head of trustworthy AI, Sandhini Agarwal, told the Post.
But if mass-market images of thin, beautiful women yield AI-generated images of thin, beautiful women, who then turn into thin, beautiful AI-generated influencers, creating pictures that just feed back into the collective media stream, isn’t the snake just going to end up eating its own tail? And what does that mean for those of us who aren’t traditionally beautiful, whose bust-waist-hip proportions can’t live up to Barbie-like online standards or who just can’t afford the upkeep on a head of perfectly coiffed hair?
More than anything, it means the rift between human influencer and AI influencer gets deeper. Aiyana Rainbow’s multicolor 'do, for example, exists to attract attention. (Also, generative AI seems to love giving queer people colorful hair.) Creating someone with mousy brown hair or a 50-year-old gardening mom, for instance, wouldn’t have provided the visual hook needed, no matter how unrealistic or stereotypical that hook might be.
Aiyana Rainbow isn’t 100 percent perfect—her face, her creators note, isn’t entirely symmetrical—but any quick-scrolling fan would be hard-pressed to notice any sort of flaw.
Brands, certainly, aren’t interested in rolling the financial dice on creators whose images aren’t as perfect as possible. And while in recent years there has seemed to be a general love of celebrities who are “authentic” online (see: the relative success of “give no shits” actors like Renee Rapp, Nicola Coughlin, and Dakota Johnson on press tours, for instance), that doesn’t mean that carefully curated influencer lives—real or AI-generated—aren’t being rewarded all the same.
Fanvue cofounder Will Monange says his service currently has “thousands of monthly earning AI creators” on its platform, a number that’s seemed to grow exponentially over the past year. AI influencers like Aitana Lopez, whose creators are judging Fanvue’s contest, are doing similarly well, with hundreds of thousands of followers interested in Lopez’s virtual likes, interests, and lingerie pics. (She even plays Fortnite online.)
Seren Ay’s creators say their online doll gets queries looking for relationship advice, which she’s more than happy to provide, and Kenza Layli, the Moroccan contest finalist, gets about a 5 percent engagement rate on her posts, a number most marketing professionals would froth at the mouth for.
It doesn’t hurt that they’re beautiful on top of all of this. Or it does, but in the same way it hurts that society values one specific standard of beauty, whether on a human being or on some AI creation. In a world where millions upon millions of people follow hot influencers that they know, consciously or not, they’ll never meet or form a meaningful connection with, an AI pageant like Fanvue’s is a symptom of a larger issue, not a harbinger of impending doom.
