I think a lot of discourse comes down to that we’ve forgotten how to talk and actively listen to one another.

I think we’re conditioned to be “fixers” and when we see someone sad or frustrated, we immediately want to “fix it” and make it better, because that's how we were raised.

"Fix the problem and the problem goes away. Resolved. Let's move on."

But sometimes... things aren’t easily fixable. Or... they are, but the person isn’t ready to fix it. Sometimes people just need a place to complain and yell about the problem and just need to be heard.

They WILL eventually fix it themselves, but just... not at that exact moment.

Or the problem does get fixed, but we still have residual feelings we need to process, however, everyone else is moved on but we're still very much "stuck" on the emotional aspect that was created by The Problem.

And so we become the target of others' frustrations, because, "It's fixed! It's fixed! Let's MOVE ON ALREADY!!" and... that just compounds the issue in my honest opinion.

My job is tough in this sense; I’m here to lesson and give advice but at the same time, it’s a delicate balance of knowing when to step back and give them the space they need. When I start sensing that the other person isn't ready to listen to advice, I step back and smile and nod.

It was a tumblr post some years ago that employed the use of asking,

“Do you want advice or help to resolve the problem or do you just need a shoulder to cry on and be heard?” and the results are amazing!

Them: I think I just need to talk and be heard…

Me: okay. *pours tea and offers a cookie* what’s going on, honey?

And also? Saying “I’m sorry” doesn't have to be a boring platitude or placeholder.

Sometimes it is just what someone needs to hear the most.

“Aw... Dude… that’s such a tough position to be in. I’m so sorry, that you’re going through This. Is there anything I can do to make it easier on you?”

This^ shows:

1) “I hear you and I understand.”

2) It also demonstrates a willingness that you do care and you do want to help.

3) But it also puts the responsibility back onto the other person to accept the help. Again: Do they want help? Are they ready for help?

At the end of the day, it all comes down to active listening skills and doing our best to understand.

John Price deserved to be divorced.

IM SORRY.

But young John Price who jumped the gun and proposed. Afterall it was well known how many men got married and had families while on deployment, if they could do it so could he. But he couldn't.

He was never home. Sitting next to his wife and his mind was still in middle of nowhere Russia.

And really there's only so much on person can take. His wife could forgive the forgotten gifts for anniversaries, birthdays, and Christmases. But she couldn’t even find comfort in his presence. She begged him to change, begged him to leave, begged him to choose her. And he did.

For awhile. Then it was back to the same. So she filed for divorce.

And think of the potential. Older, wiser, had everything and lost it John Price winning back the love of his life.

Who cares if she's already moved on with a husband and kids. If he could be a father figure for his men he could certainly step-up for his wife's kids. And her husband? Well, darlin, accidents happen all the time.

Shenker-Osorio says the left’s enemy isn’t the right, it’s cynicism. The problem isn’t that authoritarians want to erase the division between church and state, or take away our right to control our bodies. The problem is that this minority can get away with these unpopular proposals because the people who disagree with them think nothing can be done to stop them. For Shenker-Osorio, the tonic for this is to switch from the negative framing (“abolish ICE”) to positive ones: “respect all families.” Rather than saying “end the climate emergency,” she wants us to call for “ensuring clean, safe air to breathe and water to drink.” When the right says they want to cut taxes to improve the economy, we counter with, “we’ll raise wages and increase consumption, which is better for the economy.” Shenker-Osorio proposes a three-step method for changing minds. First, identify a shared value (“people who work for living ought to earn a living”). Move on to a problem (“our divisions distract us while rich people pick our pockets and hand the spoils to their corporate cronies”). And then, the solution: “rewrite the rules so that the wealthiest few pay what they owe and all of us have what we need for generations to come.”
